Iowa 4-H Foundation Awards 2013 Iowa 4-H College Scholarships

Ames, Iowa – The Iowa 4-H Foundation recently awarded 77 college scholarships valued at $61,500. Fifty-nine of those scholarships were presented last Sunday, June 9, at the Extension 4-H Youth Building on the campus of Iowa State University. A total of 19 DuPont Pioneer Community College 4-H Scholarships valued at $9,500 and 40 4-H Scholarships from many generous donors valued at an astounding $34,000 were awarded. The 59 scholarship recipients were 4-H’ers from across the state, with 35 counties represented. These Iowa 4-H individuals will be attending an accredited university, college, or community college in the state of Iowa in the fall of 2013. Below are this year’s 59 4-H Scholarships in alphabetic order by county in which the recipient participated in 4-H. Information about each donor can be found at the bottom of this release. The remaining 18 4-H scholarships were awarded by Hills Bank and Trust Company who gave a $1,000 leadership grant to Iowa students who completed a 4-H leadership program during their senior year of high school. These scholars were recognized by a presentation sponsored by Hills Bank and Trust earlier this year. Colvin Family 4-H Scholarship, $1,000

Benjamin Baudler – Adair County Parents – Clifton and Sondra Baudler Benjamin Baudler is a senior studying dietetics at Iowa State University. In the Adair

County 4-H program Baudler learned much about team work as the president of his club and the county’s 4-H Youth Council. In his seven years as a 4-H member, he was a camp counselor, a community scholarship run organizer and a volunteer at local long-term care facilities. He has taken numerous Food and Nutrition, Visual Arts and Communication projects to the Iowa State Fair. Those experiences transferred over to his leadership roles in Iowa State’s Student Dietetic Association and Iowa State’s Relay for Life. “4-H gave me the confidence I needed to achieve my life goals,” Baudler said. “My first Food and Nutrition project sparked my interest, and today I am carrying that passion as I enter my final year of coursework.” Baudler has been a nutrition adviser to his brother’s summer camp, a guest volunteer at the Henery A. Wallace Foundation’s Real Soil, Real Food, Real People event and an AmeriCorps member. After graduating from Iowa State, Baudler would like to become a dietician in rural Iowa and take on nutrition related issues such as diabetes, obesity and eating disorders. (195)

Great Western Bank 4-H Scholarship, $1,000Bradley Baudler – Adair County Parents – Clifton & Sandra Baudler

Bradley Baudler will be a first-generation college student when he attends Iowa State University in the fall with an agricultural education major. The decision wasn’t too difficult due to his terrific experience through the Iowa 4-H Youth Conference. Baudler took his lessons from the conference back with him to his home county of Adair where he is the current president of the county’s 4-H Youth Council. Under his direction the group has increased its service work around the community. During his nine years of 4-H he also became the event chair for a charity run where all proceeds went to a scholarship in name of 4-H club member who was killed by a drunk driver. Baudler loved taking on all the challenges that came with these formal leadership positions, but one of his favorite challenges came from an informal title of being a mentor to new 4-H’ers. “4-H has helped me become a better leader and communicator. It helped me realize I have a passion for teaching and coaching in my future,” he said. Baudler has been award with a 4-H State Communication Award and a 4-H State Leadership Award. (190)

Tobin 4-H Scholarship, $1,000Madison Shuey – Adams County Parents – Scott & Karin Shuey

“If it wasn’t for 4-H I never would’ve started showing cattle,” Madison Shuey said. “This entire 4-H experience has provided an important foundation for my future.” She is a graduating senior at Corning High School in Corning, Iowa who plans to study animal science at Iowa State University. During her time in 4-H Shuey has excelled at the county and state level in Breeding Beef, Market Beef, Dog, Horse and Pony, and Photography. Some of her awards include State Reserve Intermediate Pleasure Horse, State Reserve Intermediate Horsemanship, Champion Halter Horse and Adam’s Overall Dog Showman Champion. During her time with 4-H, she has held the position of president, vice-president and treasurer of her 4-H club. Under her leadership they delivered “Meals on Wheels” and sang Christmas carols at the Corning Nursing Center as their service projects. After graduation from Iowa State, Shuey sees herself returning

to the Midwest to work in the livestock industry as a pharmaceutical sales person, a breed association junior advisor or even working for a pureblood breeder as a herd manager. (175)

Career 4-H Scholarship, $500Kaitlyn Romitti – Boone County Parents – John and Kathy Romitti

A proud member of the Madrid Merry Makers 4-H Club for nine years, Kaitlyn Romitti was also on the Boone 4-H County Council member for three years. She was the Clover Kids site coordinator for the Madrid sessions last spring and assisted as a teen helper for four years. Last summer, Romitti was an intern at the Iowa 4-H Camp as the Culinary Workshop Coordinator where she taught kids at the camp about food safety, culinary skills and cooking techniques. “The values instilled in me by the 4-H program continue to grow and build my character.” Romitti is a junior at Iowa State University studying dietetics, and family and consumer sciences education. After graduation she plans to complete a dietetic internship, take the board exam to become a registered dietician and possibly pursue her master’s degree. Currently she holds the offices of the College of Human Sciences Council Representative for Culinary Science Club and is the secretary for Collegiate 4-H. Romitti is the current Cook This! Event Coordinator Intern for the Iowa 4-H Office. (174)

Orscheln 4-H Scholarships, $1,000Carissa Brown – Boone County Parents – David & Annette Brown

Carissa Brown lived out her mantra of “4-H is like a piece of play dough. You can mold it into anything you want it to be.” Not only did she go to the Iowa 4-H Youth Conference and was part of Boone’s 4-H Youth Council, but she was also selected to the State 4-H Council, National 4-H Congress, and the Citizenship-Washington Focus Trip. Brown took advantage of everything “green,” including the opportunity to host a Japanese student in 2008 through the 4-H Exchange program. “4-H has so many opportunities to offer and I have gained so many experiences and made the best of friends,” she said. What Brown considers as her most valuable experiences are her weeks as a camper and counselor at the Iowa 4-H Camping Center. As an active member in Food and Nutrition, Child Development and Citizenship it was easy for Brown to decide to pursue a diet and exercise major. 4-H has brought her so many times to Iowa State University’s campus it hasn’t hard for her to make her to choose a college either. After graduating from Boone Senior High School, Brown is ready to find her adventure at Iowa State University. (197)

Duroe 4-H Scholarship, $500Derick Perkins – Buchanan County Parents – David & Marsha PerkinsDerick Perkins 4-H club, The Madison Mixers, was extremely involved within our community. They would do many service projects throughout the year including park clean-up, Christmas caroling, volunteering at the community steak fry and putting together a Halloween party. Perkins choose to go above the club level his freshman year and joined the youth county council. He said the experience of joining the council allowed him to step outside his comfort zone, improve his public speaking skills and meet many new people across Buchanan County. Since joining 4-H in fourth grade Perkins has shown Meat Goats, Poultry and Rabbits and exhibited Photography, Food and Nutrition, Self-Determined and Woodworking. “Being

involved with 4-H has helped me gain crucial leadership skills which have in turn helped me become a well rounded individual with strong roots in agriculture.” Now a graduate of Starmont High School, Perkins will attend Iowa State University in the fall to study agriculture and life sciences education. Duroe/AGR 4-H Scholarship, $500Austin Ehlers – Buena Vista County Parents – Brent & Carol EhlersAustin Ehlers likes to take advantage of every opportunity he possible can. A participant of the National 4-H Conference, National 4-H Congress and the Citizenship-Washington Focus Trip are just a few of Ehlers favorite 4-H opportunity’s he took advantage of. He was also a heavy participant of the 4-H Exchange program; hosting a 4-H’er from Kansas, then a 4-H’er from Japan and then a visitor to Kansas another year. “4-H has influence me as a person by presenting me with challenges and allowed me to explore different areas in agriculture to help give me direction in my career goals for my animal science major.” A junior at Iowa State University and a member of the Alpha Gamma Rho (AGR) Fraternity Ehlers has taken his 4-H lessons with him to college. He has joined the student organizations of Freshmen Council, Intercollegiate Jr. Meats Judging Team, AGR Spring Steer Show and the VEISHEA Operations Committee where he used his leadership, citizenship, and communications skills. He was last year’s AGR Grill-Master where his 4-H Foods & Nutrition Pride of Iowa presentations and meat thermometer research came in handy. While in 4-H he went on to be awarded State Project Awards in Beef, Citizenship, Communication and Leadership. (203)

Lloyd, Inc. Veterinary Science 4-H Scholarship, $1,000Kayla Ohrt – Butler County Parents – Kaye & Rita OhrtKayla Ohrt is a ten year member of 4-H and a future Iowa State University College of Veterinary Medicine student. Graduating this summer with a master’s in biotechnology from the University of Northern Iowa, her success in Cedar Falls, Iowa, with the Up With Families Organization, Special Olympics, UNI Tri-Beta Club and UNI Pre-Vet Club were all extensions from her time in 4-H. “4-H is where I learned the important skills of working in groups, organizing tasks, setting and laying the pathway to achieve goals,” Ohrt said. “My 4-H experience has been infinitely valuable to me in college.” During her many years in 4-H she won Butler County’s Danforth Award, 4-H Achievement Award, and the Outstanding 4-H’er Award. Ohrt said she will never forget the time when she was eight years old and was asked to present her presentation at the county awards banquet. She remembers there being a least 300 people there and being really nervous. After that night and after nine plus years in 4-H she has come a long way. “Being in 4-H, has given me the tools for exploring many different areas and I have yet to forget the knowledge I gained from those experiences.” (199)

Virginia Lee Harding-Roth 4-H Scholarship, $500Brett Nicholson – Calhoun County Parents – Timothy & Kris NicholsonThroughout his nine year membership and one year membership to the State 4-H Council Brett Nicholson made sure to take advantage of choosing his own path through 4-H. “4-H gave me a wide variety of experiences that helped me become the confident person I am today,” he said. Some of his favorite memories in the program include the fall kick-off every year to encourage

youth to become involved in 4-H, helping out at the county fair through his county’s youth council and being a mentor to younger members to help them become more confident in their abilities. 4-H influenced Nicholson to choose Iowa State University as his first choice when he started looking at different colleges back in 2012. His constant interaction with the college, State 4-H Conference and trips he took when he was an intermediate 4-H’er, also influenced his choice of major. In the fall, Nicholson plans on studying biology with a minor in education and hopes to help youth in 4-H during and after he graduates in four years. (172)

LA-CO Circle of Champions 4-H Scholarship, $1,000Brent Sexton – Calhoun County Parents – Keith & Barb SextonBrent Saxton bleeds 4-H green. “I owe a great deal to the 4-H program and would not be the same person without it,” Saxton said. He was on the Calhoun County 4-H Council, the Northwest Area 4-H Council, the State 4-H Council where we was seated on the finance committee. During his nine year in the program, Sexton received a State Project Award in Leadership, Sheep and Horticulture. He was a Premier Exhibitor at the Iowa State Fair in Sheep and Horticulture. He is an Iowa 4-H Foundation 4-H’ers for 4-H Donor, a 4-400 Donor, and a Brick Donor at the Iowa 4-H Center. Saxton is a senior at Iowa State University studying animal science with plans to apply to veterinary school in the future. He has been on the Dean’s list all six semesters. During his three years of college he has been a member of the Alpha Gamma Rho Fraternity, a member of the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences Ambassadors team, Homecoming Central, Dance Marathon and Freshmen Council. Saxton has traveled to Australia, Costa Rica, Poland, Germany, and even spent a summer in Denmark working with veterinarians through Iowa State’s College of Agriculture and Life Sciences’ Study Abroad Program. Roberts Family 4-H Scholarship, $1,000Haley Schmidt – Cass County Parents – Neil & Tracy SchmidtHaley Schmidt has participated in Cass County’s Share-the-Fun contest from 2006 to 2012. She was selected to advance to the Iowa State Fair 4-H Share-the-Fun each year. In 2008 she received the Best Overall Music Performance Award from the Griswold Tuesday Music Club for her Share-the-Fun act with her sister. During Schmidt’s many years in 4-H of she has given many presentations at her club meetings regarding the Music, Citizenship, Sheep, Visual Arts, and Woodworking; the project areas she excelled at. Through her involvement in Cass County’s 4-H Youth Council she was led to the 4-H Youth Action Committee where Schmidt realized the importance of promoting 4-H, providing youth hands-on learning and reaching out to others. Through the Bear Grove Blazer 4-H Club she delivered Christmas cookies plates to elderly residents, donated nonperishable food items to the local food pantry, cleaned ditches along Highway 71 and decorate the Atlantic Heritage house for National 4-H week. “When I first became a 4-H member I didn’t know that all these opportunities of a lifetime 4-H offered would ultimately determine my future,” Schmidt said. She will be studying music performance at Iowa State University in the fall. (194)

Ralph & Angus Dostal Memorial 4-H Scholarship, $1,000Curtis Ullerich – Cass County Parents – Chris & Gwen Ullerich“4-H has always been a motivating force in my life,” said Curtis Ullerich. “It has given me outlets for my varied interests and opportunities for growth in service and leadership.” A senior at Iowa State University studying computer engineering, Ullerich is a four-year Collegiate 4-H member, mentor of the State Tech Team, Iowa State’s Collegiate 4-H President and the collegiate representative to the State 4-H Council. During his time in the program he was selected for 4-H Congress, which is where he original took his first steps out of his comfort zone. While at Iowa State he has sat as the president of the computer science honor society, Eta Kappa Nu, chaired the Iowa State’s Department of Computer Science Student Advisory Council and traveled aboard to Scotland and Ireland. Ullerich has continued his dedication to 4-H outside of Iowa State as well. He has organized, created and led over 20 workshops on topics ranging from computer programming to interviewing with all ages of kids in three states, Iowa, Kansas and Washington, and has judged Communications, Photography and Discovery project areas. Theisen’s Home•Farm•Auto 4-H Scholarships, $1,000Logan Lafrenz – Cedar County Parents– Jeff & Dawn Lafrenz

When Logan Lafrenz’s 4-H club president and close friend Emily Bohsack died in a car accident in December 2010 he decided to help create and sit as the chairman of the Emily Bohnsack Memorial Committee. Under his direction, local business and other 4-H clubs in the area joined together to create four benches at the concession stand of the Cedar County Fair. During Lafrenz’s time with the 4-H program, he raised and bought his own livestock. Succeeding at the county and state level in Beef he was awarded numerous awards for his showmanship, but Lafrenz’s said he would never forget receiving second in his class at the Iowa State Fair. The particular judge boasted not only his animal but his honesty and presence in the ring. “4-H has allowed me to meet and work with many different types of people which gave me the opportunity to make lifelong friendships,” he said. Lafrenz plans on giving back to 4-H in the future by becoming a 4-H leader. He will be attending Iowa State University in the fall to study agriculture education. (180)

Stakey 4-H Scholarship $1,000Madalyn Kerns – Clayton County Parents – Jim & Jody Kerns

“This great program has provided me with new opportunities and experiences that have shaped my decision to enter into the Iowa State University College of Humans Sciences,” said Madalyn Kerns. She spent a week the last three summers in Ames on Iowa State’s campus for the State 4-H Conference and absolutely fell in love with the university and couldn’t imagine myself being anywhere else. At the conference she attended numerous workshops on food and health, which really got her interested in the field of dietetics, her intended major. Her mother, Jody Kerns, always made her take a communication project to the fair, which Kerns dreaded when she was younger. “I was shy and didn’t want to be giving a speech in front of other people,” she said, “but as I got older I looked forward to the project and have taken my working exhibit to the state fair multiple times.” She is a member of the Clayton County 4-H Council where she is the chairperson of the omelet brunch committee. Extension she has been teaching a fitness class to adults over 60 that live in the community while also becoming a certified trainer. (197)

DuPont Pioneer Community College 4-H Scholarship, $500Hannah Ruchotzke – Clinton County Parents – Paul & Susie RuchotzkeThanks to 4-H, Hannah Ruchotzke had many unique experiences ranging from cattle to gardening. She won numerous ribbons and awards for her cattle during her nine years of 4-H, and she made her own award-wining herd of eight cattle through the bucket bottle program. Ruchotzke participated in numerous Home Improvement, Photography and Citizenship project areas, but her most unique project was taking her pet hermit crabs. In high school Rochotzke’s favorite volunteer experience was wrapping and giving Christmas gifts to needy children in the Delmar, Iowa community. For the past three years, Rochotzke’s and her brother took on the challenge of reviving, developing and maintaining a flower bed in the Delmar City Park. If they had not stepped in and gone above and beyond, the city would have plowed the flowering bed under. “4-H has motivated me to work hard on things that interest me, especially those that involve nature and animals,” said Ruchotzke. She said she learns best when the curriculum is hands-on and therefore cannot wait to attend Kirkwood Community College in the fall to receive her veterinary assistant degree. (182)

Theisen’s Home•Farm•Auto 4-H Scholarships, $1,000Sarah Kinrade – Clinton County Parents– Steven & Julia Kinrade

Sarah Kinrade’s older siblings were all in 4-H and she could not wait for the day that she could be a part of the organization. The Delmar Hot Shots 4-H Club President, Kinrade and her members strived for success through community service by putting on the Delwood Halloween Party, the Delmar Festival of Lights and the Delmar Easter Egg Hunt. She has done her fair share of Food and Nutrition and Home Improvement projects, even walked down the runway for Clothing and Fashion a number of times. However, Kindrade’s love to show cattle drew her toward the Beef project area. She became the Angus Steer Reserve Grand Champion at the Iowa State Fair in 2009 and the Angus Steer Champion at her county fair for four consecutive years. “4-H has directed me toward my major of animal science and to Iowa State University,” she said. “I cannot wait to put my lessons I have learned through 4-H to use in college and in the many years to come.” (168)

Tubbs 4-H Scholarship, $1,000Shelby Bormann – Clinton County Parents – Daniel & Sheila Bormann

If it wasn’t for 4-H record books, Shelby Bormann would not have the skills of managing different aspects of a business. As a future business administration management major at the University of Northern Iowa, 4-H directed her down the career path she would like to pursue. In 4-H Bormann says she learned time management, leadership skills and responsibility, especially in the last two years as the president of her 4-H club. During her nine years in the 4-H program she has participated in Clothing, Breeding Beef, Market Beef and Horticulture project areas, however her passion was found in the many Clothing projects she was involved in. Bormann has so many 4-H experiences in the clothing selection, $15 challenge and fashion revenue competitions then she can count. “When I attend the State Clothing event in Des Moines I got

to meet many new people and learn all about the fashion industry,” said Bormann. It helped me be more confident in myself and allowed me to express my love for sewing.” (169)

DuPont Pioneer Community College 4-H Scholarship, $500Mackenzie Felt – Dallas County Parents – Davie & Jennifer FeltBy showing livestock through 4-H, Mackenzie Felt has developed a strong work ethic and sense of responsibility that has helped her to become successful. Felt was heavily involved in Beef, Swine, Food and Nutrition, Photography and Communication project areas, but her success always during her nine years in 4-H leaned toward her champion animals. As the 2011 Dallas County Fair Queen, Felt enjoyed seeing as many events, including 4-H events, by handing out ribbons, trophies and socializing with people who want to make the best better. Also in 2011 she attended the Citizenship-Washington Focus Trip, which is an adventure she said she will never forget. “4-H has showed me there are opportunities in agriculture and to be confident in my abilities,” Felt said. “If I put my mind to it I can make a difference in the community, state, and nation.” After graduating from Adel DeSoto MinBurn High School, Felt will attend Indian Hills Community College to seek an Associate of Arts in Agriculture. While at college, she will play for the Indian Hills Volleyball Team. (176)

Lloyd, Inc. Veterinary Science 4-H Scholarship, $1,000Callie Garoutte – Dallas County Parents – Dennis & DeeAnn McCauley

Callie Garoutte could’ve given up on her dream of going to veterinary school when she was put on a waiting list when she graduated from Iowa State in 2009. However, after four years of working she decided it was time to apply again at Iowa State’s College of Veterinary Medicine. Garoutte wanted to show her daughter that you can overcome any obstacle and now after being accepted to the veterinary school, she can show her daughter what looks like when dreams become a reality. As an eight-year 4-H’er of Dallas County, her number one project was always her horses; wining numerous barrel racing awards every year at the county and state level. Because of 4-H Garoutte continued to cultivate her passion for her four-legged beasts. “Without 4-H I doubt I’d ever explore becoming a veterinarian,” she said. Her daughter has now just started with the Clover Kids program and Garoutte is very excited to see what her daughter does with the program. She hopes her daughter is given the same opportunities and experiences that she was given when she was raised by a loving 4-H community. (186)

DuPont Pioneer Community College 4-H Scholarship, $500Luke Cota – Dubuque County Parents – Robert & Tracy Cota

From the beginning of Luke Cota’s 4-H experience he always wanted to be in the front leading the meetings like the “older kids.” Once Cota became one of the “older kids” he ran to be an officer and the first office he held was historian. During this tenure in this position he completed the first historian book for his club. He then climbed up the ladder and became the secretary and now has been president for the last two years. With a club of sixty plus kids Cota wanted to learn every one’s name and know who they were. By the time he finally had learned everyone’s name the year had ended and he would start over again the next year. “The last two years as president have been fun and I really have learned a lot about being a true leader,” Cota said. “It has showed me a lot of responsibilities and I've noticed people look up to me and I am

honored.” In 4-H, he realized he really liked to work with his hands to create projects, especially in Woodworking and Home Improvement projects. This has influenced Cota’s college plans of majoring in welding at Northeast Iowa Community College in Peosta, Iowa. (204)

DuPont Pioneer Community College 4-H Scholarship, $500Matthew Waller – Dubuque County Parents – Daniel & Sandy Waller

Matthew Waller participated in the Beef project area every year. He admits he wasn’t very successful during his first years in the show ring or in the rate-of-gain sections of the shows. However, Waller was determined to change this and found advice around his community and in 4-H. In the last few years he has seen all of his hard work pay off with grand champion ribbons and first through fifth place in rate-of-gain category. “Without 4-H, I may not have chosen to study beef science and make a career out of it,” Waller said. In the fall he will attend Northeast Iowa Community College to not only major in beef science but also agriculture business. While in 4-H he also exhibited projects in Mechanics, Welding, Science and Engineering, and Home Improvement. He said he tried to get involved in everything to broaden his horizons but the science and engineering was his favorite category since it involved restoring farm tractors. During his nine years in 4-H Waller refurbished four tractors to and two of them have gone on to Iowa State Fair where they received blue ribbons. (187)

DuPont Pioneer Community College 4-H Scholarship, $500Grant Greenzweig – Floyd County Parents – Galen & Charlotee Creenzweig

Grant Greenzweig would say that one of the most important and beneficial 4-H experience has been with his livestock. A member of the 4-H program for the last nine years, Greenzweig has shown in the Beef, Sheep and Swine project areas while also participating in Shooting Sports and Communications. During his time as a Floyd County Marksmen he was the treasurer for three nonconsecutive years and learned about the importance of funds for the club and how to balance a checkbook. As a young shooter and hunter, Greenzweig learned an extraordinary amount about safety and shooting skills through his 4-H club activities, safety demonstrations and hunter’s education. During the program he learned how to safely operate and shoot different rifles, pistols, shotguns and bows. “4-H has taught me strong leadership skills that will be beneficial as I pursue my career in agriculture,” Greenzweig said. In the fall he will attend North Iowa Area Community College and intends to major in agriculture studies and minor in agronomy. (166)

DuPont Pioneer Community College 4-H Scholarship, $500Nathan Mead – Floyd County Parents – William & Elaine Mead

One of the first projects areas Nathan Mead started in was poultry, but he soon started to expand his horizons and started raising llamas to show at the fair. Mead considers raising livestock to be one of the best experiences in 4-H because of the responsibility it has taught him. He is one of the founding members of the Floyd County Marksmen 4-H Club and Llove Those Llamas 4-H Club. Mead has been a member of the Floyd County Council for the past five years and has helped coordinate activities for the younger 4-H members, such as a bowling night. “4-H has greatly aided me in building my communication skills through interaction with leaders and other members,” he said. The council also did a significant amount of fundraising

for 4-H. Mead said he will forever remember selling popcorn at the 4th of July fireworks display last year when he had the chance to wear the 4-H clover costume. DuPont Pioneer Community College 4-H Scholarship, $500Nicholas Mead – Floyd County Parents – William & Elaine Mead

Nicolas Mead’s favorite 4-H memories were at Iowa 4-H Youth Conference/Animal Science Roundup. For him, meeting 4-H’ers from across the state and learning from the Iowa State Research Farms is one of the best opportunities Iowa 4-H offers to its members. Through his years in the 4-H program, Mead has created two 4-H clubs in which one focused on everything llamas, Llove Those Llamas, the other focused on shooting sports, The Floyd County Marksmen. Poultry, Woodworking, Photography, Vegetable and Llamas were his top five project areas, but Mead’s favorite county fair experiences were with the Floyd County 4-H Council. He enjoyed conducting the awards program and selling popcorn during the Fourth of July celebrations. “4-H has helped teach me the value of hard work and service,” Mead said. “It has improved my leadership skills and has prepared me for any possible future leadership I may have.” In the fall he will study wind energy and turbine technology at Iowa Lakes Community College in Estherville, Iowa. DuPont Pioneer Community College 4-H Scholarship, $500Emily Seidl – Guthrie County Parents – Dale & Suzann Seidl

Two years ago a member of Emily Seidl’s 4-H club found out her mother had Lukemia. She knew as president of the club they had to do something for the family. So she joined forces her local FFA chapter and together they raised over $10,000 dollars for the family. “This was the one event that means the most to me,” Seidl said. “The fact that two organizations, filled with people grades fourth through twelfth, could do so much for a family in need is something I will never forget.” Throughout Seidl’s nine years in 4-H she spent much of her time in the Photography, Food and Nutrition, Home Improvement, Visual Arts, and Poultry project areas. Much of her 4-H success in the program came from her Communication projects; receiving numerous awards at the Iowa State Fair for her extemporaneous speaking presentations. “The skills that I have learned through 4-H, such as communication, teamwork, creativity and responsibility, make me feel more prepared to go to college.” Seidl will attend Des Moines Area Community College in Ankeny in the fall. She plans to major in agriculture business, and to complete that degree at a four-year institution in the future. (197)

Goering Communication 4-H Scholarship, $1,000Jan Ryherd – Hamilton County Parents – Daniel & Donna Ryherd

Getting to know such a great group of high school 4-H’ers, and planning while also leading the State 4-H Conference will always be one of Jan Ryherd’s favorite 4-H memories. As a member of the State 4-H Council Ryherd was able to apart of the finance committee, promotions committee, and as a co-chair of the council. During her nine years in 4-H she was selected to represent Iowa at the National 4-H Congress. Ryherd also found new interest by

taking Rabbit, Food and Nutrition, Communications, Leadership and Citizenship projects to the Hamilton County Fair. Her adventure through 4-H led to her to find the communications field to be the area she could pursue a career in. In the fall, Ryherd will attend Iowa State University to major in journalism and mass communications with a broadcasting emphasis. “My experience in 4-H has created my identity,” she said. “It has made me a leader, a better communicator and I am thankful for all the great opportunities and trips I have been offered.” (170)

Peyton Family 4-H Scholarship, $1,000Bethany Olson – Hamilton County Parents – Rod & Terri Olson

4-H was only the beginning for Iowa State University senior Bethany Olson. Receiving countless awards for her projects, record keeping and community service, Olson has used her experience as a Hamilton 4-H’er has a spring-board for her success in college. Her 4-H expertise in the project areas of Market Swine, Market Beef, Communications, Food and Nutrition, and Clothing is something she said she cannot imagine without. A member of Iowa State’s Division I Track and Field team, a co-founder of Iowa State University Student Federation for Agriculture, an Alpha Zeta Agriculture Honor Fraternity member, Iowa State College of Agriculture and Life Sciences Student Ambassador, and an Iowa Agricultural Youth Institute Counselor is just the tip of her involvement at Iowa State. “I grow more and more thankful for the lessons I learned about hard-work, determination, and persistence through 4-H, because it taught me the importance of setting objects, being focused, being self-driven, and being motivated in everything I do,” Olsen said. Upon graduation from Iowa State University with two degrees, agricultural business and international agriculture, she hopes work for with DuPont Pioneer as one of their marketing team members with career potential of working internationally. Cheryl and David Pence Family Communication 4-H Scholarship, $500Levi Cook – Hardin County Parents – Paul & Charlotte Cook

Levi Cook has been involved in the Communications project area for six years. He has done educational presentations by himself and with his younger sister and by doing this he learned how to work together with somebody else on a project and deliver a finished product. Cook was one of very few senior 4-H members in his county fair that participates in the Communications project area, so he gave as much advice to younger members in the area as he could. “Being involved in the Communications project area for many years has taught me the valuable skill of public speaking,” Cook said. “I was able to develop leadership skills on various committees and work with other 4-H members in my club and county.” During his nine years in the 4-H program, he showed Swine and Dog, while also participating in Beef Feeder Pen and Consumer Management. One of his favorite experiences in 4-H was the Citizenship-Washington Focus Trip where he said he had a blast meeting 4-H‘ers from North and South Dakota, Nebraska, Tennessee, Kentucky and Iowa. Cook will be attending Iowa State University in the fall studying agriculture business. (190)

Peterson Family 4-H Scholarship, $500Robert Prucha – Harrison County Parents – Robert & Anne Prucha

Robert Prucha had a sense of adventure since he was a little kid. Prucha’s work ethic and motivation encouraged his teachers to push him farther by enrolling him in the most challenging classes they could give him. 4-H allowed him to explore his interest beyond the classroom. “4-H has given me firsthand experience and a broad range of skills in many areas not covered within a school’s curriculum,” Prucha said as his interest drew him toward engineering. Through 4-H, he led three workshops to sixth graders with the most recent teaching the youth how to create pressure rockets. He mentored his county’s FIRST LEGO League 4-H Robotics Club and was an official referee at the Council Bluffs regional FIRST LEGO League Event. Prucha is a state award winner in Aerospace. His passion to community service in 4-H led him to create a nonprofit organization called Lest We Forget to honor veterans by installing flagpoles in their yards. Prucha researched and completed the paperwork needed to establish a nonprofit organization that could accept donations and his organization have now installed several flagpoles with many more to come this summer. Prucha intends to major in mechanical engineering at Iowa State University in the fall. (202)

Mary Ann Stumbo 4-H Scholarship, $500Jason Schuster – Jackson County Parents– Don & Barb Schuster

A senior at Iowa State University, Jason Schuster, believes he wouldn’t be the man he is today without 4-H. A nine year Jackson County 4-H’er, Schuster was involved in Beef, Rabbit, Woodworking, Photography and Dairy Steer. These 4-H experiences have helped him make positive choices in college to make the most of his Iowa State experience. “4-H’s strong development of my leadership and planning skills while fostering my interest in science and technology pushed me to major in agricultural engineering at Iowa State University,” he said. Since his freshmen year, Schuster was a member of the Iowa State chapter of the American Society of Agricultural and Biological Engineers and has been involved with VEISHEA where he has served on the Operations Committee and is currently the Co-Chair of 2013 VEISHEA Village. Within the Iowa State Agricultural Engineering Department he is a tutor for math and chemistry classes, an agricultural engineering peer mentor and a teaching assistant for the engineering introduction class. Schuster is currently an intern at John Deere Waterloo Works as a manufacturing engineer. (175)

DuPont Pioneer Community College 4-H Scholarship, $500Jodie DeVries – Jasper County Parents – John & Lee DeVries

Jodie Devries will always remember the citizenship she learned in 4-H. As a 4-H’er for nine years DeVries purchased gifts for the Women’s Shelter in Prairie City, participated in the County Festival of Trees fundraiser and donated coloring supplies and teddy bears to Skiff Hospital. She participated in canned food drives, she helped assemble nutrition packages for Meals for the Heartland and she also helped plant trees at the new Monroe Recreational Park. As a member of the Jasper County Showmen 4-H Club her club participated in the Adopt a Highway project and donated to Iowa 4-H Foundation’s 4-H’ers for 4-H campaign. “Being a member of 4-H has taught me to be a leader in whatever comes my way,” Devries said. “Through my years in 4-H it was helped me decide on my future career.” During her nine year tenure she participated in Poultry, Beef, Food and Nutrition, Visual Arts and Communication

project areas. DeVries will attend Des Moines Area Community College in Ankeny this fall to study agricultural business and then plans to transfer to Iowa State University. (179)

Mahr Family Ag and Life Sciences 4-H Scholarship, $3,500 - RenewableBreanna Branderhorst – Jasper County Parents – Bryan & Debra Branderhorst

Breanna Branderhorst, a swine enthusiast, took the skills she learned in 4-H to a whole new level during her first year of college. She planned a 2013 Agvocacy Day training focused on social media that is currently open to Iowa State University students and high school FFA members. The training was April 21, right before State FFA Convention, and students heard from professor Dr. Jodi Sterle of Animal Science at Iowa State, Jana McGuire from CMA We Build Trust, and Heather Lilienthal of the Iowa Soybean Association, and Trent Loos a professional Ag advocator who all talked about the uses of various social media sites and the importance of advocating. Currently, Branderhorst is working to have this training available to 4-H students at the State 4-H Youth Conference. She is excited to be able to coordinate this event and looks forward to its success in the program she was a part of for nine years. “My 4-H experience helped me to develop leadership skills, taught me responsibility and how to be independent,” she said. “Without 4-H, I wouldn’t be who I am today.” Branderhorst is a sophomore at Iowa State University studying agricultural and life sciences education. DuPont Pioneer Community College 4-H Scholarship, $500Paul Pisarik – Johnson County Parents – Mark Luann Pisarik

Friends at school teasingly refer to Paul Pisarik as Mr. 4-H’er because of all his involvement in so many 4-H activities. He originally joined 4-H to be just like his older brother, but soon he realized that the program was built for him to create his own adventure. “4-H has helped me to grow into the confident and talented person I am today. The friends and skills I have gained will be an asset to me throughout my life,” said Pisarik. His leadership skills have evolved from his experiences and responsibilities through his club, then soon his county council and most recently the State Council. Public speaking was one of Pisarik’s least favorite things to do, but through club presentations, interviews and group activities at all three levels he has become more comfortable in these situations. His love for agriculture has grown through 4-H activities and now shows his animals in about 10 shows each year. “I don’t believe I would have started showing cattle had I not joined 4-H,” Pisarik said. He will be attending Kirkwood Community College in the fall to study beef production. (186)

DuPont Pioneer Community College 4-H Scholarship, $500Anna Tichy – Linn County Parents – Richard & Pam Tichy

“4-H is all about spreading knowledge and it has opened me up to new areas of interest,” said six year 4-H’er Anna Tichy. A State Award recipient in Beef, Tichy was also involved in Food and Nutrition, Poultry, Beef, Gardening, and Self-Determined project areas. Her first 4-H experience was giving a mushroom presentation and it was the first time she had ever presented in front of a large crowd of 40 people before. Tichy says giving the speech made her a more confident public speaker and helped to develop a more outgoing personality. One of her favorite experiences was being a 4-H camp counselor at camp Hitaga. Tichy watched after six girls for three days, made sure they ate breakfast, went to their scheduled events, were safe

at all times and enjoyed their camp experience. “I think I had just as much fun as the kids did,” she said. Tichy has participated in many community service projects from bell ringing for the Salvation Army, 4-H officer training night and to inform younger kids on what 4-H is during the Ag in the Park event. In the fall, Tichy will attend Kirkwood Community College to take the very first steps of fulfilling her dream of becoming a large animal veterinarian. (209)

DuPont Pioneer Community College 4-H Scholarship, $500Meghan Gray – Mills County Parents – Robert & Colleen Gray

When Meghan Gray heard that there were no active Clover Kids groups in Mills County she decided to take matters in her own hands. She got together different 4-H’ers across the county who wanted to help form a group of Clover Kids and contacted her County Youth Coordinator about setting up an eight week program. With her coordinators helped Gray was able to contact parents and create her first lesson plans. She led the group once a week through games and activities once a week, and by the time the eight weeks were up there were twenty-four youth enrolled in the program. Gray believed the group accomplished its goals and the kids had the opportunity to learn new skills through the 4-H program. She is an eight year 4-H’er and is a current State 4-H Council member. “Plain and simple – 4-H has made me who I am today.” Gray said. “Through the interactions I have had with older 4-H’ers and caring adults, I have learned to have compassion, strong work ethic and high values for myself.” (176)

Lloyd W. & Myrtle Obrecht 4-H Scholarship, $500Casandra Ford – Mills County Parents – Mark & Sherry Ford

“4-H has provided me with many experiences and opportunities that I would otherwise not have been offered growing up,” said Iowa State senior Casandra Ford. During her nine years in the 4-H program she was selected to State 4-H Council and National 4-H Congress, represented Iowa at the National Western Roundup and participated in the Citizenship-Washington Focus Trip. She participated in the Horse Visual Arts, Rabbit, Safety and Food and Nutrition project areas. While at Iowa State she has reapplied her state and national 4-H experiences to organizations such as Block and Bridle and College Against Cancer. Ford has continued to give back to the Ames community, something she learned about in 4-H, during her many semesters at Iowa State. She has been volunteering at a therapeutic riding facility as a side-walker and would now like to open a stable of her own someday. “4-H provided me experiences that gave me the desire to pursue a degree in animal science,” Ford said, “and now I’ve added a specialization in companion animal and equine management.” (174)

Stratton 4-H Scholarship, $500Nicolas Frazee – Mills County Parents– Arnold & Tracey Frazee

The first 4-H experience that comes to Nicolas Frazee mind is when he helped create a cattle class in Mills County that helped out 4-H’ers who do not have the facilities to take on a cattle project. In the program 4-H’ers are given a calf that is raised on another farm and the members are shown how to brush, feed, lead and show them. This project Frazee helped to create promoted the county’s beef show and helped many 4-H’ers become involved with showing cattle who would not have been able to otherwise. During his nine years in 4-H Frazee also took on Beef, Sheep, Woodworking, Home Improvement and Food and Nutrition, and

Communication project areas to enhance his natural talents but also find new interest. “4-H has led me to be a more confident person as well as opened my eyes to the many different career areas in the agricultural world.” Frazee said. “I also would not have been able to meet as many new people at places like state conference and my Citizenship-Washington Focus Trip if it wasn’t for 4-H.” In the fall, Frazee will study agricultural business at Iowa State University. Lloyd & Kathryn Bettis 4-H Scholarship, $1,000Brandi Lawless – Monroe County Parents – John and JoBeth Lawless

This year at the Monroe County 4-H Annual Awards Ceremony Brandi Lawless was able to give a short speech recognizing her mom, JoBeth Lawless, as a great 4H leader for over five years. Lawless said that if they had asked her back in fourth grade she would’ve said no, but through 4-H Lawless has opened up and has found comfort at the microphone. 4-H has taught her to be proud of her small community of 150 and to help those who need it. Her 4-H club, the Melrose Majors, created treat baskets for a Melrose family whose family member had lost their legs in the Iraq War, talked to residents at the Monroe Care Center each year, participated in the Melrose Town Clean-Up Day and even raised money for a family in Melrose who lost their house to a fire. “4-H has taught me to be a leader, to work hard because it pays off, to respect others and to give back to those in my community,” she said. Lawless will be attending Iowa State University in the fall to major in animal science. (184)

DuPont Pioneer Community College 4-H Scholarship, $500Colton Shull – Monroe County Parents – Mike & Cindy Shull

Colton Shull has grown up on a farm and would spend every day outside in the field baling hay or hanging out with the cows and calves. Shull calls it his one true passion and his experiences with 4-H have only reinforced how important the agriculture industry is. “I have heard several people say ‘if you love what you do at work it isn't a job’ and 4-H has taught me that I can stay with a project to its competition,” he said. “It just takes prioritizing, organization and dedication.” Shull has been showing cattle since he was seven years old and has been very fortunate to receive many honors for his cattle. One of his most memorable animals was a heifer he won Supreme Champion Overall Breeding Female with at the County Fair, and that same heifer brought him to be the Grand Champion Foundation Simmental Heifer and 4th Overall Breeding Heifer at the Iowa State Fair 4-H Breeding Heifer Show. Shull plans to continue to be a supporter in 4-H because of what he learned in and out of the show ring. He plans to attend Indian Hills Community College in Centerville to major in sustainable agriculture and entrepreneurship. (201)

DuPont Pioneer Community College 4-H Scholarship, $500Tanner Allensworth – Montgomery County Parents – Scot & Gayle Allensworth

Tanner Allensworth chose to stay active in 4-H because he has grown each year as a person. “Being part of a 4-H club, which focuses on agriculture and the community has given me leadership skills for my career, my life and more,” said Allensworth. He learned how to keep records and as he has grown, he has been able to serve as a leader in Montgomery County by serving as a junior superintendent for every breed of livestock show at the county fair. He himself showed poultry, sheep, dogs, goats and beef; with many of his poultry and goats going

to the Iowa State Fair. During Allensworth’s senior year, he started a mentoring program for his first year club members. His mentee was a girl who happened to have a disability. They partnered up during activities and together they learned many different skills such as how to use parliamentary procedure and how to give an effective educational presentation. As president of his club, Allensworth lead his peers once a month to volunteer at an assisted living facility to give back to the community. In the fall he will attend Iowa Central Community College to study agricultural technology. (197)

Orscheln 4-H Scholarships, $1,000Jacob Henderson – Muscatine County Parents – Randall & Sandra Henderson

A member of the Waspie Legends 4-H club for only four years, Jacob Henderson has taken full of advantage of 4-H and participated in numerous community services and leadership activities. He has taken donations to the homeless shelter in Muscatine, loaded boxes for Kids Against Hunger and even painted bleachers at Muscatine fairgrounds. During 4-H Henderson excelled in Photography. He won the people choice award out of 4,000 entries in 2011 from Camera Corps where he participated against 4-H’ers from across Arkansas, Kansas, and Iowa. Some of his photos have been show at the St. Marks Gallery in West Des Moines. However, photography is not the only area Henderson has learned so much from. As a future animal science major at Iowa State University, he needed as much experience with animals to make becoming a veterinary was the career he wanted. “Through 4-H I have been able to attend workshops and programs that have helped me learn more about the animals I want to care for when I receive my doctorate in veterinary medicine.” With his gained experience in 4-H Henderson went on to volunteer in Kansas at the Lebanon Veterinary Clinic and West Branch Animal Clinic in West Branch. Paul 4-H Scholarship, $500Derek Johnson – Muscatine County Parents – Douglas & Roxanne Johnson

From the age of about one, Derek Johnson has been involved in 4-H. Johnson’s older siblings were in 4-H and he was in clover kids long before he reached the age to join 4-H himself. He grew up watching presentations and looking at exhibits that he couldn’t wait for the day he could participate. Johnson’s very first notable 4-H experience was the time he gave his first presentation for his club. He was so nervous and scared out of my wits he even forgot how to pronounce some of the words. Today, nine years later, Johnson has no problems with public speaking or speaking in front of others. Throughout the program he also found new hobbies such as woodworking, art and photography by completing projects in the project area. Johnson found how his excellence in math and science courses could turn into a career because of 4-H. “A science and technology 4-H club was started in my county and I became hooked,” said Johnson. “Now, I look forward to a career as an engineer.” Though still unsure of what subfield he would like to pursue in engineering, Johnson cannot wait to move to Ames in the fall to attend Iowa State University. “Being involved in 4-H has allowed me to gain confidence in myself, learn how to keep records and helped me gain leadership experience I couldn’t get anywhere else,” said Joel Kibbie. A graduate of Emmetsburg High School, Kibbie was a nine year 4-H’er who was determined to succeed in the Beef, Horticulture, Photography, and Science Engineering and Technology project areas. Kibbie is the president of his 4-H club and the vice-president of Palo Alto’s 4-H Youth County Council. One of his favorite 4-H experiences was attending the Iowa 4-H Youth Conference in Ames. “4-H has affected my future plans because it has showed me the advantages and opportunities that agriculture has to offer me,” he said. In the fall, Kibbie will be attending Iowa Lakes Community College where he will obtain his associate’s degree in Agriculture Business. In two years, he would like to attend Iowa State University to gain his bachelor’s in agriculture studies. (155)

Rebecca Ahlers loves 4-H. She loves it so much she cannot find one word to describe the impact 4-H has had on her life. Ahlers made the most of each opportunity offered to me in 4-H and was able to grow into the young woman she is today. From being club historian, treasurer and president, to organizing club projects and joining County Council, she was able to become involved and learn so many life skills that helped her find her way along the road to college. Now a senior studying agronomy and journalism at Iowa State University, Ahlers has been a VEISHEA Parade Committee Co-Chair, an agronomy department peer mentor and the chancellor of a honor society in Iowa State’s College of Agriculture and Life Sciences, Alpha Zeta. Ahlers credits 4-H for much of her success at college. “When it came time for me to decide what to do with my life, I knew from my experiences in 4-H to follow my passions and do something that I could put my head, heart, hands, and health into and make a difference in not just my community or my country but my world.” (192)

Cheryl and David Pence Family Visual Arts 4-H Scholarship, $500Michelle Temeyer – Polk County Parents – Vance & Jan Temeyer

As a young 4-H'er, Michelle Temeyer learned the Principles and Elements of Design and incorporated them in her projects. She learned how to put together designs and clothing based on these concepts, and why it's important and helpful. When Temeyer joined in fourth grade she completed paint-by-numbers, but her growth in 4-H had her designing and creating her own piece of 4-H jewelry for her visual arts project last year. “4-H has helped me develop more than my citizenship, leadership, and communication skills. This organization has given me countless opportunities to explore project areas and has given me numerous treasury opportunities.” Outside of 4-H she sat on the Ankeny Community Education Advisory Council, joined the service organizations of Key Club and Interact Club and volunteered at her local library. These experiences, along with her numerous 4-H experiences, have influenced Temeyer’s decision to pursue an accounting and finance majors at the University of Northern Iowa. (154)

DuPont Pioneer Community College 4-H Scholarship, $500Kara Cowlham – Sac County Parents – Jason & Joan Cowlham “4-H has taught me so much, and has done so much for me over the years,” said Odebolt-Arthur, Battle Creek-Ida Grove High School Kara Cowlham. “4-H has made me more confident, more poise, more outgoing and more responsible.” A nine year 4-H’er, Cowlham has found success in Clothing, Photography, Communications and Dog Obedience. She has given educational presentations related to what she has learned during the program such as “The Nutritional Value of Goat Meat,” “Dog Obedience,” and “Getting Involved.” As a Sac County 4-H Council member Cowlham has found the value of community service by working the omelet breakfast for her county’s endowment fund fundraiser, cleaning and improving the Sac County Fairgrounds, creating crafts for Santa Comes to Odebolt, and planning and advertising the Potato Bake Fundraiser for 4-H. In August she will study agricultural geospatial technology at Kirkwood Community College. (142)

Kiser 4-H Scholarship, $750Katlyn Kahler – Story County Parents – Wade & Pamela Kahler

When Katlyn Kahler first started 4-H, she joined the Story County Hippology Team where she was a team member for many years. Kahler quickly joined the Story County Quiz Bowl Team and her team not only qualified to participate in the 2013 Denver National Western Stock Show, Rodeo and Horse Show but placed seventh overall in the competition. At the same show her county’s horse judging team placed fourth overall. Halter, Showmanship, Walk-Trot, Western Pleasure and Horsemanship where Kahler’s choices of horse competitions, and in 2011 and 2012 she won Senior Horse Showmanship at the county fair. She advanced to Story County’s Supreme Showmanship Contest and won that contest in 2012. However, Horse projects where not the only areas of excellence for Kahler. She has received numerous state and local awards for her Swine and Communication projects over her nine year 4-H experience. “I have become a stronger leader, volunteer, communicator, and citizen because of the skills and experience I’ve had through 4-H,” she said. Kahler is a State 4-H Council member and will attend Iowa State University in the fall to study animal science and agriculture business. (188)

Colin Ryan’s favorite saying is “Nothing can hold you back, if you don’t hold back a thing.” As a senior in civil engineering at Iowa State University and because 4-H helped him develop a work ethic that includes strong organization skills, his rigorous courses aren’t as challenging as it could be. When he graduates, Ryan would like to improve the nation’s roads, specifically the bridges, and make them safer while also becoming more environmentally compatible. A member of Collegiate 4-H, he has also found Dance Marathon, Concrete Canoe Team, and the American Society of Civil Engineers as places that he can be involved to make the best better. While in 4-H, Ryan has been a National 4-H Congress representative, attended National 4-H Conference, received State Project Awards in Leadership and Poultry, and was a member of the State 4-H Technology Team. “I am grateful for the opportunities to develop my

Theisen’s Home•Farm•Auto Community College 4-H Scholarship, $500Emily Miller – Story County Parents – Todd & Eileen Miller

“4-H has given me the incentive to better myself through hard work and doing what I enjoy,” said Emily Miller. Year-round she worked to improve her skills and knowledge of horses. In the summers Miller would ride everyday while also working for multiple horse barns. Her dedication brought her 23 champion awards at the Story County Youth Fair and one at the Iowa State Fair. Miller practiced horse judging, quiz bowl and hippology as much as possible, which resulted in two trips to the Western National Roundup where her team represented the entire state of Iowa. Miller’s teams placed fourth and seventh in the nation, while she placed third in horse judging. “I am proud of all of these,” Miller said. “However, my greatest accomplishment has been receiving the Story County Horse Project Senior Sportsmanship Award.” Some of her favorite times in 4-H included interacting with the youth she had the time to establish a friendship and supportive role model relationship with. Miller said she loved watching the younger 4-H’ers learn new things they enjoyed, which is why she instructed horse riding lesson group every week. In the fall, she plans on attending Ellsworth Community College majoring in agricultural business and animal science. (203)

DuPont Pioneer Community College 4-H Scholarship, $500Bradley Lampe – Washington County Parents – Dennis & Ann Lampe

For Bradley Lampe, 4-H has been a family affair because of his mother’s family has been very involved in 4-H for many generations. All of Ann Lampe’s seven siblings were in 4-H and every single one of their children have been heavily involved in 4-H. Bradley Lampe’s entire family belongs to the Washington County 4-H program and one year, there were 11 cousins showing cattle at the same time! He has many memories loading up the trailers and caravanning to the Iowa State Fair and to the Ak-Sar-Ben 4-H Stock Show to show their cattle. One of Lampe’s proudest moments as a 4-H’er was when his family, the Elmer Schneider family, was named the Family of the Year for Washington County this past November. Another great 4-H moment for him was in 2012 at Ak-Sar-Ben when he was named the winner of a 4-H challenge calf. “As a person, 4-H has influenced me to be a better leader and a better role model for the youth across my county all while leading me to choose an agricultural field of study after high school.” Lampe will attend Kirkwood Community College to study agricultural business in August. Between classes at Highland High School Alec Ornduff would always find time to help his dad and grandpa on the family farm. He said it will be one of the hardest things to let go when he graduates and attends Kirkwood Community College in agriculture production this fall. Being born and raised on a small family operation has brought Alec Ornduff many challenges. It was 4-H where he rose above those challenges and reached for the stars. Not only from his successful champion sheep did he learn the true value of head, heart, hands, and health but also in his failures, which pushed Ornduff to try harder and kept him moving forward. His

favorite part of the 4-H organization was how he directed his own path of learning through his busy life. Ornduff will always remember building a retaining fence in downtown Ainsworth and helping a local shop with gifts during the busy Christmas season. “4-H isn’t about winning, but the experience, the fun, the friendships, and the way families bond together,” Ornduff said. “That’s what’s important.” (177)

Orscheln 4-H Scholarships, $1,000Joni Erwin – Washington County Parents – David & Tamara Erwin

“I have made numerous lasting friendships and memories in my many years of 4-H,” Joni Erwin said. “All while developing my passion for the agricultural industry.” Her expertise in 4-H included Market and Breeding Beef, Sheep, Food and Nutrition and Photography. Erwin was the Champion Intermediate Showman at the Iowa State Fair in 2010 and her team received third overall in the State Livestock Judging Contest. She was the secretary of her 4-H club from 2011 until 2013, while also being the secretary for the Washington County 4-H Youth Council. Throughout high school she was also involved in Business Professionals of America, Students Against Destructive Decisions and the National Honor Society. Erwin just graduated from Washington High School in Crawfordsville, Iowa and will attend Iowa State University in the fall with an agricultural business major. She hopes to one day become an agriculture sales woman. (145)

Orscheln 4-H Scholarships, $1,000Mitchell Hora – Washington County Parents – Brian & Theresa Hora

Mitchell Hora believes the most influential part 4-H had on him was his communications skills. Hora has given educational presentations each year and has participated in the challenging extemporaneous speaking project twice. During his nine years in 4-H he has taught other 4-H'ers about the Communications project area through numerous workshops and presentations. In his 4-H club, Hora put it on himself to give his club a voice on the world-wide-web. In 2008 he created a website for and became the first club website in Washington County. The site is designed to inform club members of upcoming events and to provide them with digital copies of the agendas to assist them in filling out their record books. “I am still in charge of updating and managing the site today. We communicate daily and I have used what 4-H has taught me to improve my skills,” said Hora. He has also improved his skills by taking many projects to the fair in Home Improvement, Citizenship, Leadership and Swine. Hora will attend Iowa State University in the fall to study agricultural systems technology. (181)

Orscheln 4-H Scholarships, $1,000Austin Twinam – Washington County Parents – Layne & Pauletee Twinam

Growing up on a heritage family farm that has been in the family for over 150 has created this deep appreciation and love for agriculture in Austin Twinam’s life. He takes pride in the agriculture and 4-H way of life. A Family Heritage State Project Award recipient, Twinam was also a strong participant in Swine, Conservation, Home Improvement and Self-Determined during his nine years in the 4-H program. Twinam has taken his own road in his 4-H experience by being a member of Washington County Council for the past three years. During his time on the council he has even had the experience of speaking on his local radio station to hundreds of people about what 4-H during National 4-H Week. That is something Twinam never thought he

would be able to do because of his shyness, but many 4-H experiences made it possible for him to grow. “I am thankful that I had the opportunity to be a member of 4-H and my county council,” Twinam said. “Both of them are a big part of the reason I feel I have the self-confidence I need to be a student in Iowa State’s College of Agriculture and Life Sciences next fall.” (201)

Phyllis J. Olson 4-H Scholarship, $500Kallen Anderson – Webster County Parents – Robert & Charlene Anderson

A senior studying both dietetics and family, consumer sciences Kallen Anderson looks back on how much 4-H has meant to her. “The friendships, skills and opportunities I have gained from 4-H will continue to help me and guide me through my last year as an undergraduate at Iowa State as well as graduate school,” Anderson said. During her nine years in the program she was a State 4-H Council member in 2007-2008, a selected National 4-H Congress participant and a State Award recipient in Clothing, Leadership, and Horticulture. During her three completed years of college she has found a passion for the Iowa State College of Human Sciences Student Council where Anderson has held the officer positions of vice-president and is currently in her second term as president. During her time on the council, she has volunteered her time at alumni events, bi-annual service projects with ACCESS and VEISHEA, as well as bi-annual pizza sales and other philanthropies benefiting the United Way of Story County. As a member of Alpha Gamma Delta Sorority, Anderson has served as alumnae relations coordinator, public relations coordinator, and social chair. She is currently looking for graduate schools in hopes of receiving her master’s after graduating from Iowa State University in May of 2014. (209)

DuPont Pioneer Community College 4-H Scholarship, $500Calvin Davis – West Pottawattamie County Parents – Jim & Heather Davis

Not many can say they found their future college roommate at the Iowa State 4-H Conference but Calvin Davis can. Since his freshmen year Davis has attended the conference every year, and it has always been one of the highlights of his year. It was by participating in Animal Science Roundup portion of the conference that Davis became an expert in different segments of the agriculture industry. Receiving Grand Champion in West Pottawattamie’s market steer and market broiler competitions are just the tip of Davis’ success. During high school, he spent much of his time between his homework for his classes at Underwood High School and working a part-time job. Some of his favorite jobs were doing hours for his uncle’s tree service business or his grandpa’s farm. “4-H has taught me to always work hard for what you want and to never give up,” Davis said. His passion for 4-H has him dedicated to make sure his younger brothers and other youth in his community become involved with 4-H so they don’t miss out on the many lessons he has learned in the last nine years. Great Western Bank 4-H Scholarship, $1,000Mariah Kay Schmitt – Winneshiek County Parents – Carl & Terry Schmitt

“I cannot imagine where I would be without such an amazing opportunity such as 4-H,” said eight year member Mariah Schmitt. All Schmitt ever wanted to do was take her pet calves

to the county fair, and when she was told she would need to join 4-H to show she said – sure, why not? However, 4-H turned out to be so much more than just showing animals for Schmitt. She was a member of Winneshiek’s County Diary Judging Competition team and they won the state competition last summer. Schmitt said the experience was a dream come true, but she will never forget the opportunity to compete in the National 4-H Dairy Judging Contest at the World Dairy Expo. Her team placed third in the breed of Ayrshire and eleventh as a team while individually, Schmitt placed 3rd in the breed of Brown Swiss. “I was so proud to be representing Iowa at a national 4-H event,” she said. Schmitt’s team has been invited to compete internationally representing the United States at the Royal Highland in Scotland in June 2013. In August she will attend Iowa State University to major in public service and administration in agriculture. (196)

“In 4-H I learned to express my point of view and to accept helpful criticism as a means of improving myself,” said Kalli Weber. “The 4-H program has helped me to become a leader and the person I am today.” 4-H has helped her show Horse and Swine while exhibiting many Food and Nutrition, Photography and Communications projects. Weber’s showmanship abilities allowed her to qualify for the Overall Senior Showmanship contest two years in a row and earned the title in 2012. In addition, she competed at the Iowa State Fair 4-H horse show in 2010 and 2011. Some of her top successes in 4-H exhibits include a photograph at the Iowa State Fair earning a blue ribbon and earned an opportunity to compete at the state fair in Extemporaneous Speaking. While participating in 4-H for nine years, Weber had the opportunity to attend the Citizenship Washington Focus Trip to Washington D.C. in 2010. Weber considered this trip a “once in a lifetime opportunity.” 4-H spurred her interest in pursuing a career that connects the field to health and diet and exercise. In the fall, she will chase after that career by majoring in diet and exercise at Iowa State University. (201)

Evan Fritz cannot get enough of 4-H. As a freshman at Iowa State University he has continued to find opportunities to stay involved with the Iowa 4-H program. He is the Iowa State Collegiate Representative for the State 4-H Council and was recently selected to be a collegiate facilitator at the 2013 National 4-H Conference. Before attending college, he participated in Worth’s County Youth Council, State 4-H Council, National 4-H Conference and was selected as a delegate for the National 4-H Congress. “4-H has been the one tool that has shaped me as a person in every way that you can think and all for the better,” Fritz said. He has taken much what he has learned and applied to different positions across campus at Iowa State. Hills Bank and Trust Company provides this scholarship that is open to ALL High School Juniors. Eligible applicants must be a resident in one of following counties: Benton, Cedar, Iowa, Johnson, Jones, Keokuk, Linn, Louisa, Muscatine, Washington. The recipients of the scholarship must attend a minimum of nine hours of Hills Bank sponsored leadership training during their senior year of high school and must have involvement in community service, student group activities, or work experience. They must be planning to attend any Iowa accredited college, university, or community college and must have a 2.8 or higher high school GPA.

Kiser 4-H Scholarship 4-H alumni and staff contributions in honor of Professor James Kiser’s retirement provided the funding for the Kiser Scholarship, which goes to an applicant who is an outstanding 4 - H horse project participant. They must attend ISU.

Mahr Family Agriculture and Life Sciences 4-H Scholarship

The family of Marvin, Sr. and Frederica Mahr provide the largest scholarship to a student who has five or more years of 4-H membership and has evidence of community service and leadership participation. The Final selection is based on an interview and the applicants must submit a separate activity plan for a leadership/community service activity to be implemented during 2013-2014. ($500 grant may be available for training and project costs.) The student must be attending ISU in the fall of 2013 or attending ISU.
