Good afternoon. It’s October 31st 2017

Sketchbook:This week we will concentrate on faces. We’ll start out by looking at the shapes of faces and proportions. When you work on your mask you will need to think about the overall shape of the mask as you create the framework on which to add the features that you want.

Sketch and label the 6 basic shapes below and just position the features. We will work on developing the features later, so just put in marks to show where they go.

There are more basic shapes according to recent scientific studies, but for now, we will stick to these 6. Make sure you think about the titles as part of the art.

Many artists have used classification of shapes to help them determine the basic shapes for portraiture.

Many optometrists have used the following charts, which have also been used in the cosmetic industry:

How do you determine the shape of your own face?

For the 1st picture from ivillage:

Measure Up:Take these easy steps to accurately measure your facial features:

1. Grab a flexible tape measure, to take these easy measurements:2. Length: bisect your forehead at the hairline, down to the tip of your chin.

3. Width: measure from ear to ear (from just below the eyes).

4. Forehead: measure from one temple across the forehead to the opposite temple.

5. Cheeks: begin just below the outer corner of one eye, measuring across the cheekbones to the other side.

6. Jaw Line: start where your earlobe meets your jaw and measure to the other side.

Oval: your width to length ratio is 1:1.5.

Long/Oblong: your length is more than 1.5 times your width.

Round: your width to length ratio is 1:1, your forehead, cheek and jaw measurements are equal and your features are rounded.

Square: your measurements are the same as round, but your features are angular.

Heart: you are narrow at the jaw/chin with wide cheeks and forehead.

Diamond: you are widest at the cheekbones, but narrow at the forehead and jaw.

The instructions are similar here but may give you instructions that you can follow a little better:

The instructions from vanity case box:

Follow this easy guide:1) Measure across the top of your cheekbones.

Place the measurement tape starting from below the outer corner of your eyes taking it till the other outer corner of your eyes. Make sure the tape is resting on the bridge of your nose and not just standing straight on it. Note down the measurement.

2) Measure your jaw line. Measure your jaw line. Note the measurement and multiply it by two.

3) Measure your forehead. Put the measurement tape across your forehead at the widest region, usually at the

middle of the eyebrows. Note the measurement.4) Measure the length.

Put the measurement tape at the middle of your forehead and running it down till the tip of your chin. Note the measurement.

Now, use the following guideline for determining your face shape:

Oval Face - The length is equal to one and a half times width.Round Face - Your face is as wide as it is long, give or take a small amount.Oblong Face - Your face is longer than it is wide.Heart Shaped Face - Your face is narrow at jaw line, wide at cheekbones and/or forehead.Square Face - Your face is about as wide as it is long, give or take a small amount, but your jawline is sharper than that of a round face.Diamond Face - Your face is widest at the cheekbones, with narrow forehead and jaw line of approximately equal widths.

Making connections:Animators and cartoonists use various face shapes to create their characters

Security, Technology and Artificial Intelligence

Scientists such as Dr. Kendra Schmid, a facial recognition expert and scientist, is involved in classifying face shapes and in looking at things such as our perception of attractiveness based on factors such as facial symmetry. These researchers have added 5 other classifications to their previous list of 4, for a total of 9 basic shapes.  Dr. Schmid’s categories are: kite, heart, rectangle, oval, round, square, teardrop, heptagon and oblong

There are many careers that require analysis of the proportions of faces. Technology development in facial recognition is important for security. The same is true for those who are developing A.I. Artists and animators use this information in the development of their drawings for movies and video games.

There are a huge number of “how to draw faces” videos and tutorials on line and numerous books written to help people do this:

This site has collected a number of different instructions for drawing faces, unfortunately without web references for the drawings.
