Handoff Types Hard handoff

MS terminates its communication with the original BTS before setting up communication with the new BTS. In such handoff, break-before-make technique is used.

Soft handoff

During handoff MS establish connections with both original and target BTSs. In this way MS maintains communication with two or three sectors of different cells simultaneously.

Softer handoff

It is also similar to the Soft handoff, the only difference is it takes place between different sectors of the same BTS within the same frequency. In addition, the softer handoff adopts coherent combination for signals of different branches to achieve higher signal gain than the selective combination used in ordinary soft handoff.

NOTE: Softer handoff is not possible between two different frequency carriers
