Shilpa’s next spa in Goawww.starbuzz.ca

Actor Shilpa Shetty is busy expanding her business, and she says she has no time for any other work as of now. However, she admits she can’t stay away from the big and small screens for too long. As we speak, the actor-producer is gearing up to open two branches of her spa, one each in Goa and Guwahati.“Goa is a known tourist hub. It would be fantastic if we manage to open our spa chain’s outlet there before the festive holiday season (Christmas) starts. It’s always good to have loads of visitors over when you are setting up shop,” she says, adding, “And Guwahati is also becoming a popular tourist destination. The locals also deserve a good spa with super facilities. And I don’t know of too many popular chains that have gone to that side of our country. So my business partner and I thought it was a wise decision.” Shilpa’s first spa, in collaboration with Kiran Bawa, opened in Mumbai, back in 2009. Despite negative reports about the chain, the business flourished and the ladies have opened a number of spas across the country. After her ambitious nightspot, Royalty, was denied permission to open in Bandra, the actor, along with husband

and businessman Raj Kundra, opened a real estate website last month to help middle-class citizens find and purchase their dream homes at prices they can afford. “I’ve furnished my own houses in India and abroad and done their interiors. I know how much effort and thinking goes behind it. So we’ve ensured that the website also looks into that aspect, again at affordable rates,” says Shilpa,

who also plans to involve her sister, actor Shamita Shetty, in her business.“She doesn’t wish to return to the movies for sure. I supported her decision, and today, she’s pursuing a course in interior designing in London. Once she’s back and tells me what her plans are, we’ll decide how to work things out. Maybe, she could start with one of my spas. You never know!”

Former Sri Lankan beauty queen-turned-actor Jacqueline Fernandes was athletic as a teenager but realised the importance of a good body when she went for the Miss Universe contest. She says, “Fitness is not just about looking good but maintaining optimal levels of energy. Its important that youeat the right food in the right quantity.”Jacquline FernandesIn her quest for an ideal body, Jacqueline upped her protein intake and workouts (an extra class or extra 45 minutes of ab exercises or cardio) and focused on healthy, equal and well-balanced meals. “Cheese and dry fruits are my indulgences since I’m not a chocolate or dessert person,” she smiles.Jacqueline doesn’t agree with the popular notion that trainers need to be hard taskmasters. She believes they should be on the same page as you and be supportive. “They need to take you along and keep you on track,” she asserts.Although the actor loves working out, gym exercises are not for her. She prefers outdoor workouts in fresh air. “Yoga keeps me positive and

I also dance to keep fit,” she says, adding that it’s important to wear workout gear that’s comfortable, of good quality

and suitable to the climate. “Shoes are important too as the wrong footwear can cause injuries.”

Government of Canada Takes Action to Protect Canadian

Families

The Honourable Jim Flaherty, Minister of Finance, today welcomed the International Monetary Fund’s (IMF) annual review ofCanada and their support for the Government’s plan to return to balanced budgets in the medium term.“Thanks to our sound and stable economy and measures taken in the Next Phase of Canada’s Economic Action Plan, the IMF is maintaining its positive outlook for Canada,” said Minister Flaherty. “Given that global economic growth has weakened, the IMF continues to support our flexible and

pragmatic approach to returning to balanced budgets in the medium term.”The 2011 Article IV Mission to Canada statement endorses the measures taken by the Government to promote the long-term stability of Canada’s housing market, including changes in the rules for government-backed insured mortgages. The statement also confirms that Canada’s financial sector is solid, noting the Government’s “high prudential standards and rigorous supervision.” The statement recognizes

Canada’s substantial progress in advancing international and domestic financial sector reforms, and notes that Canada’s banks are “well capitalized for the transition to Basel III requirements.” The IMF also welcomes the Government’s intention to launch a Canadian securities regulator. “The regulation of security markets at the national level would strengthen oversight and enrich an already strong institutional financial stability framework,” it concluded. The IMF reviews the economic developments

and policies of each member country, usually on an annual basis. The IMF’s report is released at the discretion of the country being reviewed. The Government supports this release in recognition of the importance of the IMF’s surveillance activities, and as an expression of Canada’s commitment to ensuring that these activities are transparent. The IMF’s full statement on Canada, which will be followed by a full report later this year, can be found on the IMF website at www.imf.org.

Prime Minister Stephen Harper today announced support for the second phase of the Canadian International Food Security Research Fund (CIFSRF), which will help alleviate hunger in developing countries.“Canada is committed to helping build more productive and sustainable agriculture systems to address global hunger,” said Prime Minister Harper. “The second phase of this highly successful initiative will support research aimed at providing people in developing countries with a more secure supply of food with a greater nutritional value.”The CIFSRF, a joint initiative between the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA) and the International Development and Research Centre (IDRC), is a five-year program that funds a wide variety of projects to solve issues related to the access of sufficient, safe and nutritious foods in the developing world. It is designed to respond to immediate food needs while

increasing access to quality, nutritious food over the long term. This strategy builds on a commitment by Prime Minister Harper at the 2009 G-8 Summit in L’Aquila, Italy, to more than double its investment in sustainable agricultural development with an additional $600 million in funding over three years.Canada was the first G-8 nation to have fully delivered on its L’Aquila commitments, which it fully dispersed as of April 2011. Phase two of this initiative will be funded by CIDA and IDRC and will begin in 2012-13.

The Government of Canada today announced funding for the Canadian Network for Observational Drug Effect Studies (CNODES). This national research network will ensure that prescription drugs, verified by a vigorous process at HealthCanada, are safe and effective for Canadian families.“Our Government is committed to ensuring that prescription drugs are safe for Canadians,” said the Honourable Denis Lebel, Minister of Transport, who made the announcement on behalf of the Honourable Leona Aglukkaq, Minister of Health. “This network is another way we’re making sure Canadians and their health care providers have the information they need to make informed decisions.”In creating the network, the Government of Canada is taking a leadership role to ensure all levels of government are working together to protect citizens. CNODES will bring together more than 60 researchers from centres across Canada to conduct independent research to confirm that drugs being prescribed to the public are effective and safe.

“Thanks to this Canada-wide all-star team, CNODES will be able to rapidly uncover otherwise undetectable risks and benefits of medications and thus help to safeguard the health of millions of Canadians who use them,” explained Dr. Suissa, who will lead the network out of the Montreal Jewish General Hospital. Dr. Suissa is also Professor of Epidemiology and Biostatistics and Professor of Medicine at McGill University.Researchers in the network will use healthcare databases maintained by provincial and territorial governments toevaluate the risks and benefits of drugs on the market in Canada. By studying data from across the country on adverse drug reactions, prescribing patterns and other factors, researchers will provide a national picture of the effect of drugs on the health of Canadians. The information generated will be distributed to physicians, patients and health care decision makers. CNODES is being funded through the Government’s Drug Safety and Effectiveness Network.

Actor Akshay Kumar, who was he first celeb judge on Masterchef India when it started last year, hasn’t had the time to watch the current season. The show is being anchored and judged by three chefs instead of two chefs and movie star unlike the last season. The action star wishes the show luck with TRPs, and admits he could return to the format next season.“This year, I couldn’t take it up because it was coming too close to Khatron Ke Khiladi Torchaar and was also clashing with movie assignments. So, it was wise to not take up a show rather than to take it up and leave it in a lurch. And Masterchef India is my baby. I couldn’t have done injustice to the show,” says Akshay, who at the beginning of his career and before becoming an actor, worked at a local fast food joint in Thailand while training in martial arts. He adds, “Next season, if it completely works out with my other assignments, I’m game for it.” The actor anchored and judged the first season of Masterchef India that opened with a dismal 2.6 points but towards the finale, crossed the 4-point mark. “I wasn’t stressed about the TRPs. So, I don’t want chef

Vikas Khanna to feel the stress either,” says Akshay, adding that he’d not like a professional chef to be compared to him. “His job revolves around food. And in my case, it was a passion that turned into a job opportunity. If I had it my way, I would ask him to just go in to that kitchen and have fun with the contestants. Numbers will follow.”Few know that the action star

uses cooking as a stress-buster. Today, apart from making sandwiches and parathas, he also claims to know the trick to get the Green Thai Curry right. “The first time I made it in Bangkok, I didn’t want to taste it. I took it to my head chef and he just told me try harder next time,” Akshay recalls. “Today if he were to taste the curry I make, I’m sure he would be proud of me.”

Disability vs. Critical Illness InsuranceQ - As registered health underwriter, you specialize in Disability & Critical Illness Insurance. Can you tell us how important is it to have Disability Insurance, or is it the same as having Critical Illness Insurance?Sunil – Disability Insurance and Critical Illness Insurance are two completely different types of income protection plans and have very little in common. For Critical Illness plans, cancer and heart related diseases are the main cause of claims as they represent more than 80% of Critical Illness claims. On the other hand, Disability Insurance claims due to cancer and heart related diseases like heart attack and stroke comprise LESS than 15% of the claims. Let’s focus on Disability Insurance right now. Readers may not be aware that if one is below age 35, their chances of being disabled for more than 3 months is GREATER than 50%! This means that every one person out of two will suffer some form of disability due to an accident or an illness. With such a high probability of being disabled and thus having no income for months or years,

it is absolutely ESSENTIAL to invest in an income replacement plan. Under Disability Insurance, one will receive up to 75% of their monthly income until they recover, so that their

family can still maintain the same standard of living they are used to and the insured can focus on complete recovery without any f inancial worries.Q – As the monthly benefit in disability insurance is a percentage of one’s income, the insurance companies must be requiring proof of income. What about self employed people who claim a lot of expenses, but have

a very low taxable income - can they get disability coverage?Sunil – There is a plan available under which most people can get a monthly benefit of up to $2000 per month without any proof of income. With the chances of getting a disability being 50%, getting disability insurance is like buying a lottery ticket where every second person wins the lottery! The best part is that your premium is refundable if no claims are made. By just investing a nominal amount in a disability policy every month you could end up receiving more than a million dollars if the insured remains disabled for an extended period of time.Act now before it is too late!Sunil Bhushan specializes in Disability & Critical Illness Insurance along with Mortgage & Life Insurance, Long Term Care, Visitors & Travel Insurance as well as Health & Dental plans. You can contact Sunil Bhushan at 416-998-5656, 416-998-5656 and you can visit his website at www.sunilbhushan.com.

Saif Ali Khan who’s also known as Chhote Nawab has been crowned the tenth Nawab of Pataudi. However, since the title was abolished years

back, Saif makes it clear the ceremony is only to keep the sentiments of the villagers. The ceremony saw people of nearby villages thronging the Pataudi palace. The ceremony was attended by Saif’s mother Sharmila Tagore and sisters Soha Ali Khan and Sabah Ali Khan. The Chief Minister of

Haryana, Bhupinder Singh Hooda also graced the event.Son of former cricketer Mansur Ali Khan, Saif inherited the title after his father’s demise in September this year.

Heads of 52 villages organized a symbolic coronation ceremony, in which, a headgear (turban) was placed on Saif`s head as a mark of respect.

SRK’s RA.One earns Rs 170 crore at Box Office!

November 04, 2011 (TORONTO)8 NEWSwww.starbuzz.ca

Shah Rukh Khan’s technolgical masterpiece RA.One, one of the most expensive films made in India, has recovered its costs by earning Rs 170 crore worldwide in the opening weekend. The superstar is congratulating his business partners on the superhero’s box office success.Eros International Media Ltd (Eros International) released the collection report stating that the film has got a record breaking opening - the highly anticipated Diwali collected of Rs 137.25 crore (net collection Rs 96 crore) in India and Rs 32.75 crore overseas.Apart from this, Shah Rukh Khan had reportedly sold the satellite rights for Rs 37 crore, the music rights for Rs 8 crore and ancillary rights for Rs 10 crore even before the film had hit the screens.“As always, my heart doesn’t crunch numbers and heroes don’t count zeros...but it’s nice to know how RA.One is flying,” he further tweeted.“Ga Ga ooh la la...Ra Ra Ra.One. Thrilled with response. Congratulations to my business partners.”Made at a budget of Rs 150 crore, the film, described as best in terms of technology, opened across more than 4,000 plus screens worldwide - 3,100 plus screens in India and 904 prints internationally, including 3D and has become the biggest Hindi grosser in southern market too.

“RA.One released to packed houses across the country on Diwali day and has already created history by taking over the mantle of the biggest domestic earner so far. The film continues to be on its record breaking spree with several new achievements since its release. It has touched the highest individual collection in circuits such as Mumbai, Delhi, Punjab and Rajasthan,” Nandu Ahuja, senior vice president, distribution, Eros International Media Ltd said in a statement.“We see repeat viewings of the movie with the 3-D version being equally sought after. With the Eid holiday also coming up next week and no other major film release, we are anticipating the film to continue doing huge numbers,” he added.Speaking on the film’s overseas performance, Pranab Kapadia, president, distribution, Eros International, said: “The film is enjoying a superb run across

all major regions including UK, North America, Europe, Australia and the Middle East. Overseas, the film has broken SRK’s own previous first weekend record established by My Name Is Khan and occupies the position of biggest Indian first weekend grosser overseas as well.”Eros plans to take the film to non-traditional markets - RA.One is scheduled for theatrical release in the first quarter of 2012 across several territories including South Korea, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Russia , Lebanon, Jordan, Syria and Palestine, Brazil, Spain, Italy and Greece .Directed by Anubhav Sinha, RA.One saw King Khan as G.One along with Arjun Rampal as RA.One and Kareena Kapoor.Though the critics didn’t give it a thumbs up, the film’s visual effects and state of the art production techniques have set a new standard in the Indian film industry.

Comedy, political thriller and drama -- Ranbir Kapoor’s body of work boasts of variety and that too in just four years of filmdom. The grandson of the legendary Raj Kapoor says he wants to grow with every character and be “the biggest star”. In the last four years, the chocolate boy has grown up as an actor. He entered the industry with Saawariya and did light-hearted dramas like Bachna Ae Haseena and Wake Up Sid and it was his mature performance in Rajneeti that changed everyone’s perception of him.Now with Rockstar and Barfee, he feels he is on the right path.“I hope I can grow with every character I do. I want to be the biggest star. I want to be the best actor and I feel I am on the right path. I have been fortunate that I have worked with such talented directors,” Ranbir, 29, said in an interview.Undeterred by negative talk, he says, “I am happy with my growth and the way my career is shaping up. People have tried to pull me down with negative reviews and never-ending rumours. But that doesn’t affect me at all now.His debut vehicle Saawariya (2007) was a damp squib at the box office, but Ranbir rose above the film’s fate and won the Filmfare award for the best male debut. In his short career he has pushed the envelope by doing different roles like a lover

boy in Ajab Prem Ki Gajab Kahani, a casanova in Bachna Ae Haseeno and a calculative scion of a political family in Raajneeti. When asked about his role in Rockstar, he said: “I play a Jat boy from Delhi, who lives in Pitampura. He studies in the Hindu college and plays the guitar. It is not about music, it is a love story where music is incidental...people tell him that to get the best out of you, you should go through a heartbreak. So, deliberately he falls in love...”His grandfather was the youngest director at his time, and Ranbir too harbours the dream of wielding the megaphone. “I want to direct but the problem is I don’t think

I can pen my thoughts and vision on paper beautifully. I want to make something like Shree 420 or Jagte Raho. I want to make films that would be relatable, that would spread joy and love. Yes, I would also want to star in my own films without a doubt.”So what next?“I would want to do an out-and-out negative film. I want to play with characters, I want to explore myself. People ask me if I want to do an action film because action films are in vogue. I would definitely do one in some time, but not when it is being followed as a trend. I will do it when I feel it is the best time for me to get into such a role.”

Salman Butt, Mohammad Asif convicted for spot-fixing, face jail term

Stars line up for piece of Sachin’s racing league pie

November 04, 2011 (TORONTO) 13SPORTS www.starbuzz.ca

As one of cricket’s ugliest scandals threatened to bring more players under the fixing cloud, former Pakistan captain Salman Butt and pace bowler Mohammad Asif became the first cricketers ever to be convicted for fixing a part of a match.A 12-man jury at London’s

Southwark Crown Court found the duo guilty of conspiracy to cheat and conspiring to accept corrupt payments during a Pakistan-England Test match at Lord’s last year. The verdict came on a day when Butt’s wife Gul gave birth to a son in Lahore. Meanwhile, reports said the ICC’s anti-corruption

unit was launching a fresh investigation into Pakistan’s tour of England last year. It is suspected that spot-fixing took place in other matches of the tour and that more players could come under scrutiny. The prosecution argued that Butt and Asif conspired with Majeed and Pakistani fast

bowler Mohammad Aamer to send down three pre-planned no-balls during the Test. Butt and Asif pleaded that while Majeed had asked them to get involved in fixing, they had refused to do so. They also maintained they were unaware of any alleged understanding to bowl pre-determined no-balls.

Bollywood star Shah Rukh Khan, Telugu hero Akkineni Nagarjuna and Dabur family scion Mohit Burman are among the celebrities and business honchos who will own a racing team in a motor sports league backed by Sachin Tendulkar, said sources directly briefed on the matter. The Indian Racing League - called the i1 Super Series - which was launched in August this year, is looking to ride on the huge success of the Formula One Indian Grand Prix. The races will feature F1 and upcoming Indian drivers and will be held in Delhi, Abu Dhabi, Kuala Lumpur, Doha and Bahrain.Shah Rukh, along with business partners Juhi Chawla and Jai Mehta, will own the

Mumbai franchise, while Dabur’s Mohit Burman is on the verge of buying the Delhi franchise. Malaysian business tycoon and Air Asia boss Tony Fernandes along with UK-based hedge fund manager S G

Srinivas is set for the Chennai team.Telugu superstar Nagarjuna and entrepreneur N Prasad, who sold Matrix Laboratories to Mylan, has sealed the franchise deal for Hyderabad. Former Indian cricket captain Sourav Ganguly is discussing the possibility of leading a consortium to bag the Kolkata team. Cricketer Yuvraj Singh along with a local business partner is behind the Chandigarh franchise. The ownership details of the Bangalore and Pune franchises have not been finalized. An investor and a member of a leading Bollywood family, besides a large consumer durables group, are in

contention for the Pune team.Machdar has finalized the racing calendar for 2011-2012 and signed a broadcast deal with Ten Sports.Unlike the IPL, Machdar did not opt for a public auction

process and selected franchises by invitation. The potential franchise owners will have a minimum commitment on marketing within the franchise agreement while Machdar will take care of most marketing initiatives.Machdar is also on the verge of gaining the required approvals from world governing body of the sport-Federation International de l’Automobile ( FIA), and the Federation of the Motorsport Council of India (FMCI).

MOVIE TALK

Last Week’s AnswerLara Dutta

Now, a game on Don 2It slowly seems to have become a trend with writers waking up to claim their credit for a film’s story, weeks or barely days ahead of its release. Last week, writer and TV producer Yash Patnaik and writer Mushtaq Sheikh got into a row of sorts over RA.One’s story. Supposedly a case of copyright infringement, the matter hasn’t been sorted as yet. And now, there’s another story making rounds. This time, the target is Imtiaz Ali’s Rockstar that’s gearing up for an 11-11-11 release. Writer Muzzam Beg has accused the Jab We Met director that he has not only deprived him of a visibly prominent credit for the film’s original story but is also promoting the film as his own creation. “I had written Rockstar’s story out of my personal experiences. I narrated it to Imtiaz, when he was with Mukta Arts in 2005, shortly after his first directorial venture, Socha Na Tha released.A year later, I heard he was turning my story into a film for UTV with John Abraham as the lead,” recalls Beg.The film didn’t take off then for various reasons and the writer and director lost contact thereafter. Beg, a student from Jamia Milia Islamia, had intended to direct the film himself, since he has taken formal education in filmmaking. He started developing a fresh script

when Imtiaz contacted him, and asked for the story. “At that point, I thought no one better than him to justify such a romantic script. I gave the story to him. I was called to sign a contract. And by then, the film was on floors,” rues Beg. “The contract read that the story’s credit would be shared by Imtiaz and me. When I questioned that, he ignored my queries. After a while I gave up.”Beg rejoiced when he saw the first promo of Rockstar, that toplines Ranbir Kapoor and newbie Nargis Fakhri. But he was shocked to discover that there was no mention of his name anywhere in the

credits. “It’s absent from the promotional material, the official website and even sites like IMDB. My name’s not been mentioned anywhere,” he points out. “I have been completely wiped out and denied credit where I deserved it.”Imtiaz quells the issue, saying, “Beg likes publicity. I knew he would do this. No point talking about it now. The film’s story has little to do with his story. Saying anything beyond this is pointless.” Beg has opted to be quiet for a while now. But cautions, “If they don’t give me credit, I’ll have to take the legal route.”

Even as RA.One creates box-office history worldwide, another Shah Rukh Khan starrer is gearing up to whip up similar euphoria on December 23. After a Diwali dhamaka(blast), SRK, along with producers Ritesh

Sidhwani and Farhan Akhtar, is eyeing a Christmas banquet, and the promotions forDon 2 are stepping up.A comic book and graphic novel that will be a prequel to the much-awaited sequel was announced last Sunday and now, Ritesh admits, that for the last seven-eight months they have been working on a game based on Don’s catchphrase ‘jisse pakadna mushkil hi nahin, namumkin bhi hai’ (to catch whom is not just difficult but impossible too).

“The game will be on an international level and available across all platforms worldwide, like the comic book that will be replicated en masses and sold at railway platforms,” promises Ritesh. “It will be adapted as a board game, for the Internet on social network sites like Facebook and for consoles, phones and PS3s.”So, when are gamers going to get lucky with Don2? “We are targeting a worldwide release in the new year, closer to the film’s opening,” smiles

Ritesh. And is Don 3 on the way too? “As of now, there’s no story. But the character has become so iconic that I know we can take the brand forward anytime we want”.Don 2 starts from whereDon: The Chase Begins left off, with Vardhaan in jail and Don taking off after a cryptic ‘Jungli Billi’ quip, exactly five years later. “That for me is the most interesting twist,” says Ritesh, admitting that Don 2 also has an open ending so that the story can go on.

LIFE STYLE & RECIPE

Costume or fashion jewelry is the ultimate answer to the woman who is obsessed with high fashion jewelry. Gone are the days when one would be heavily decked up in Gold and diamond jewelry in order to look rich and famous. These days the way to make the ultimate style statement is by wearing the most exclusive fashion or costume jewelry.Earlier, this jewelry was more looked as the substitute for women who couldn’t afford to wear different jewelry made from the precious metals like gold, silver and platinum. But then as time passed these precious metals took a vast plunge in terms of the price tags. It was really not possible for the common man or rather woman to pick up matching jewelry with every outfit made from these precious metals.However- as the saying goes necessity is the mother of invention. So there started a phase where a cheaper substitute for the expensive jewelry was being looked into. This experiment to

get cheaper and more affordable jewelry had started since the early nineteenth century or probably much before that. The need for it continues till this day and age. Thus as the demand for this cheaper but more beautiful jewelry grew, there came in an array of costume jewelry and the precious metals were replaced by other cheaper metals. With this began the journey of jewelry to be made from silver, brass, pewter, nickel, copper, oxidized iron and you name it.Every possible metal has been included in making costume jewelry, which is affordable,

beautifully crafted and has a vast choice of colors available for the customers to choose from. There came a sort of revolution in the jewelry market with thousands of jewelry designers coming out of premier institutes from the world over giving out new ideas every day. Thus today the choice is amazing in this segment. There are semi precious stones, glass, crystals, Swarovski, cubic Zircona, simulated diamonds artificial stones like garnets, rubies, and sapphires, all available in dazzling and amazingly crafted pieces of jewelry. So to speak, artificial jewelry or costume jewelry is a great invention that has helped mankind, especially the women to satiate the thirst and love for jewelry. To conclude, it would suffice to say that is one of the most innovative and lucrative areas to be in today and is considered to be the ultimate fashion statement in the area of jewelry in our times.
