Three well-known company names involved in high-end trans-portation in the Philadelphia, PA, area continue to operate underthe same roof — each focusing on a specific segment while

upholding identical standards pertaining toquality equipment, reliable employees andsolid customer service. The three companies, which are separate

corporations, are motorcoach charter providerDavid Thomas Trailways, school bus operatorDavid Thomas Transportation, and DavidTours & Travel, which specializes in tour-related work. “Our niche is to offer a consistently high

level of customer service and professionalism. This is true whether operating a school bus ora motorcoach,” David Benedict, founder andpresident of all three companies, said. “Wealso take pride in having an excellent safetyrecord, which helps sell our products as well.“We have been very successful with what I

like to describe as ‘slow, organic growth.’ Wehave also expanded with new vehicles, basedon increased demand, over the past 15 years.

It’s our goal to maintain our product quality and niche within the mar-ketplace, as well as grow new segments.”Servicing customers to meet their various needs is paramount.

Benedict explained that a large customer base for David ThomasTrailways is made up of what he refers to as “institutional clients.”This includes schools, colleges and corporations.

“These clients use bus transportation all ofthe time. Therefore, it’s important to clients, especially their transportation managers, towork with a bus company that is going to per-form to their expectations and needs,”Benedict said. “The key is consistency. Inother words, we must provide a high level ofservice 100 percent of the time. This includesstrong professionalism within our staff, andconsistently offering the best drivers andequipment.”Customer service is ingrained in the com-

pany’s policies, procedures, training and hir-ing process, according to Benedict. “We are very selective in our hiring. We

often select only 1 out of every 15 people whoapply for a position,” he said. “When it comesto hiring drivers, for example, they must havea clean driving record, pass a safety back-ground check and undergo a reference check.”

Every driver must also take a 45-minute assessment test. Majorobjectives with this test include finding those candidates who are pro-ficient in areas of customer service and safety. “The (assessment test) helps us determine what kind of decisions a

potential driver would make un der certain circumstances, and to whatlevel they will succeed. Successful candidates must score in the upperhalf of a bell curve when taking the assessment,” Benedict said. “Weonly hire the best. Part of the interviewing process is really a screening

process. There are usually two or three people involved with eachinterview, and probably five or so people in our company will haveexposure to a driving candidate before that person is actually hired. This allows us to receive different opinions from our own peopleabout each candidate.”Another important factor in providing superior customer service

sounds simple, but is something not taken for granted at either of thethree companies headed by Benedict — appearance. For example, company drivers must not only have a good person-

ality, they should also “look the part” by having a neat appearance, according to Benedict. They also must be articulate. “We work hard to pick the cream of the crop during the hiring

process. We can teach new drivers a lot of different areas of the job, such as destination knowledge, but we can’t teach personality,”

Benedict said. Once hired, new drivers for both David Thomas Trailways and

David Thomas Transportation undergo extensive training from var-ious departments within the two companies. This includes instruc-tion about different types of bus and/or coach equipment that theywill be driving.

David Benedict and his key personnel, many of whom are shown on the opening page, have helped grow different

transportation options for the Philadelphia region and beyond.

There is also another prerequisite forthose who want to drive at DavidThomas Trailways or David ThomasTransportation — they must have sometype of similar driving experience. “We only hire drivers with prior expe-

rience, when it comes to operating abus/motorcoach or school bus,” Ben -edict said. “We constantly provide incentives and track our drivers. This includes checking their driving through GPS, safety practicesand driver requests from passengers. These requests are one of thetools we use to see how customers feel about each driver. We senda survey to every customer who goes on one of our tours or uses ourcharter transportation. Customers rate our company, including thedriver, as it pertains to safety, promptness, professionalism, appear-ance and driving skills.”

There are bus/motorcoach drivers at David Thomas Trailwayswho started as school bus drivers for David Thomas Trans portation. However, it’s not a given that every school bus driver can, or wants, todrive a charter or tour bus/motorcoach.“There are specific skills that must be met to be a bus/motor-

coach driver. This includes the ability to find new destinations. Ifyou are driving a school bus route, you are doing the same routeevery day. It can be very different when driving a tour or charter

bus,” Benedict said. “Not all school bus driv-ers can be promoted, but we review all ofthem. For the drivers who have those skills, they can either move to the motorcoach side, full or part time. We have several highlyskilled employees who were promoted to full-time motorcoach drivers after driving schoolbuses. We are glad to offer that opportunity.”There can be many day-to-day decisions

that have to be made when drivers are on theroad. At David Thomas Trailways, however, when drivers do come across issues theycan’t solve, they know protocol calls forthem to contact company headquarters forhelp. “There will always be an official here who

can make an important decision if a driverneeds guidance on what to do in a given situ-ation,” Benedict said. There are approximately 80 people who

work at the three companies headed byBenedict. Along with drivers, other peopleemployed include mechanics, members of thenight crew who clean vehicles, dispatchers, various types of managers and administra-tors, sales people, a safety director, tour plan-ners, a graphic artist and an IT expert. All three companies are headquartered at

the same location in Philadelphia, in a recent-ly converted facility that includes 10,000square feet of office and 10,000 square feet ofmaintenance space.“We also developed 3 acres directly behind

our facility last year to build a 100-bus park-ing lot. In total, we use 6.5 acres. Thisincludes four maintenance bays. Our facilityhas been converted into a full-service motor-coach operation. All of our equipment main-tenance, servicing and cleaning is done in-house,” Benedict said. “We have alsoreplaced all of the lighting with LED. Thisincludes the shop areas, parking lot and allaround the building, resulting in 80 percentenergy savings. The facility is also fenced inand includes 50 security cameras.“We have a beautiful facility and great

location near I-95, the Pennsylvania Turnpikeand the Route 1 corridor. Our facility is with-in five minutes of all the major highways, while also being close to the suburbs, just five

blocks from the city limits.”Benedict said there is a lot of demand for bus transportation in the

Philadelphia area itself. “It’s a big city with many schools, universities, a large convention

center and a major airport. The demand for transportation serviceshere is strong,” he said.

Gaming Industry Spurs Growth

Methodical growth, by way of referrals, mar-keting and maintaining happy customers, has led the three companies headed by

Benedict to continued expansion over the years. It allstarted in 1980, when Benedict began David Tours &Travel in an effort to organize trips to the nearbyAtlantic City, NJ, casino market. A few years earlier,New Jersey voters passed a referendum thatapproved casino gambling for Atlantic City, thusspringing a growth market for travel in the area.“Our company started as a one-man show. The

Atlantic City casinos opened in 1978, and they werethe only gaming business in the area,” Benedict said.“We began providing group tours. A few years later,we became an ARC (Airlines ReportingCorporation)-appointed travel agency and continuedto grow while entering the leisure travel business.”Throughout the 1980s, David Tours & Travel

developed many tours that were sold to other touroperators, travel agents and bus companies. Forexample, the company introduced several seafoodtour packages to nearby Baltimore, MD, whichbecame extremely popular.

In 1997, Benedict purchased his first bus and started his motor-coach operation (now known at David Thomas Trailways). This busi-ness grew to 10 buses by 2000, the same year the facility inPhiladelphia was purchased that now houses all three companies. “The bus company began as a way to better serve our tour business,

but along the way its own identity was established. I never expected

our bus operation to grow to where it is now,” Benedict said.“Originally, we just wanted to support the tour operation, but after ayear or two the motorcoach side took on a whole personality of itsown. We began attracting high-profile customers who were looking

for consistent quality. This included institutional clients and contractwork. These were customers who used buses all of the time anddemanded quality. “This became our niche and we never have lost a customer on qual-

ity. Our price might be slightly higher than some of our competitors, but we offer a value-added service that customers appreciate.”Since 1997, David Thomas Trailways has gained growth by keeping

customers happy and taking advantage of referrals.“We now have a large base of contracts in place consisting of insti-

tutional clients that use us exclusively,” he said. “In 2001, we expand-ed again, this time into the school bus business (as David ThomasTransportation). Today, we operate over 30 coach-type vehicles andabout 30 school buses.”On the school bus side, officials at David Thomas Transportation

service mostly private schools located in the suburban areas aroundPhiladelphia. The company’s transportation offering includes dailyschool routes as well as after-school activities, such as with sportsteams.

“We continue to grow in this area by offering the same high level ofservice as our motorcoach operation,” Benedict said. “Our school busdrivers are all in uniform, just like those on the motorcoach side, andfollow the same protocol. Our school clients look to do business with

a professional transportation compa-ny. It’s our job to be such a company.” The most recent change for

Benedict concerns his motorcoachbusiness becoming affiliated, in 2013,with the Trailways TransportationSystem. Although the main service region

for David Thomas Trailways is 60miles around Philadelphia, Benedict said his vehicles can, and do,travel anywhere in the United States and Canada, especially up anddown the Eastern Seaboard.

That Distinctive Look — Even At Night!

It’s been said that a bus/motorcoach is a traveling billboard. If thisis the case, the vehicles operated by David Thomas Trailways cer-tainly are designed to attract attention due to their reflective multi-

color decals that even show up at night. Most of the company’s vehi-cles are white and feature decals with a red, yellow and green design. “We have had these decals since our first bus, although the artwork

has been tweaked over the years,” Benedict said. “The decals areexpensive, but they do help distinguish our company. “You see plain buses traveling down the road all of the time. They

don’t attract very much attention. That is not the case with our compa-ny. We get many comments from people who tell us, ‘We notice your

buses and they look great.’”Keeping the fleet at David Thomas Trailways looking good in other

ways is also essential to Benedict and his employees.“We don’t operate buses with dents, scratches, etc. If we find a

scratch, for example, it’s fixed. This is all part of our image,” he said.“We need our buses to look good at all times. It’s an important part ofwhat we do when it comes to providinga great customer experience 100 percentof the time. “Quality control is very important,

which is all part of how our buses look.It helps that we have a heated wash bay,so whether it’s summer or winter, ourbuses get cleaned inside and out afterevery trip. We never get complaintseither about restroom odors in a vehicle, or that the air conditioning isnot working. Equipment maintenance and cleanliness are all key partsto providing a quality product. Also, 75 percent of our fleet is ‘green.’We use the latest technology to clean exhaust emissions.”Overall, the fleet at David Thomas Trailways features a variety of

vehicles such as 47- and 54-passenger motorcoaches as well as 10smaller Temsa vehicles. This includes six 35-foot and four 30-footTemsas. Benedict spoke of the company’s need for quality mid-size coach-

es, which led David Thomas Trailways to Temsa.“We bought one Temsa and liked it, so we bought several more to

replace other (mid-size) buses. We now have 10 Temsa vehicles andhave found the company to be very good partners. We appreciate theirsupport. The relationship between our company, Temsa and CH BusSales, Inc., the exclusive distributor of Temsa motorcoaches in the

United States, has been solid,” Benedict said. The Temsa vehicles at David Thomas Trailways are used for a vari-

ety of clients, such as senior citizen groups, colleges and corporations. “Not everybody needs a full-size motorcoach. Using a smaller

coach, such as our Temsa vehicles, provides an economical way forclients to get where they are going, without having to pay for a 45-foot

vehicle,” Benedict said. “We can offer the same quality and amenitiesat a reduced cost for the client. That is a plus. One of our Temsa vehi-cles serves as an executive coach and includes a satellite TV. “There is a wide range of customers and customer needs, which is

why our fleet is so varied. We offer the right size vehicles for everygroup of people who travel with us.”Among the many amenities found in a David Thomas Trailways’

bus/motorcoach are DVRs, WiFi and 110-volt outlets, as well as avariety of safety equipment such as heat sensors and tire pressuremonitors.A GPS system is also installed on each bus, and the company is cur-

rently testing cameras for its vehicles that are Internet-based. “We can pull (live video) on a computer coming from these cam-

eras. It shows a variety of angles such as from the front windshield, inside the vehicle and along its sides. It can show, for example, anoth-

er vehicle drifting into the bus lane or something happening in front ofthe bus,” Benedict said. “These cameras will record everything that goeson. We are beta-testing the new camera system now, and our plan is toequip the whole fleet with this technology.

“Security is very important. Currently, if there is a problem on one ofour buses, the driver can push a panic button to notify headquarters of asituation. We also have the capability to shut a bus down from our head-quarters in case of an emergency or hostage situation.”

Advanced camera technology also helps bus companies avoid falseclaims. Benedict said that after an accident, the bus is often the first to beblamed. “However, we find that more than 90 percent of the time, the bus driv-

er is not at fault. New camera technology can show exactly what happenedduring an incident. It’s also a very important tool for the insurance indus-try. Today’s technology can capture everything that happens around thebus as well as inside.”

‘We Don’t Cut Corners’

Not willing to rest on the past accomplishments of David ThomasTrailways, Benedict and his staff continue to look for ways toattract new customers, while maintaining a high level of trans-

portation performance. Marketing is conducted by way of social media, direct mail, TV and radio advertising, billboards and sales calls. The threecompanies that Benedict heads also benefit from customer referrals. “Of course, having attractive buses traveling up and down the highway

as moving billboards is also very important,” Benedictsaid. “A lot of business today comes from our Website, due to search engines, and we are always reaching out toinstitutional clientele. This includes new contracts withschools, colleges and corporations. It’s an ongoingprocess. It’s a big deal at our company every time weland a new client. Our presence and name recognitionare helping us land more bids, which aren’t always wonon price alone. Many of the institutional bids are very

safety and quality directed. “Our company’s reputation and safety record have helped us, along with

having a new fleet. Once we have a customer, he/she doesn’t leave, thanksto our consistency and the type of product we put on the market. This iswhy it’s so important for us to remain consistent, so there is never a rea-son for a customer to seek some other company.”Although the future looks bright for his three companies, Benedict said

there are challenges that must be addressed in order to continue growing. He noted that new bus regulations continue to make the cost of doing busi-ness higher, and that Pennsylvania just raised its fuel tax. “It’s hard to pass these additional costs on to customers. The chal-

lenge is keeping the vehicles moving without discounting our prices andgiving away our fleet,” Benedict said. “Therefore, we must maintain ourpricing structure. “Another challenge is the overall economy. In general, it seems there is

less money out there right now for a lot of people to take leisure trips, suchas to amusement parks and to participate in shopping tours. We have seena decline over the past couple of years for this type of travel.”

“You can’t be on an island in this business. You always need people and people need you. I quiteoften get calls where somebody’s bus is out of serviceor they need a bus cleaned, etc. We are glad to help.”

0714Busline.FINAL_Layout 1 7/7/14 12:19 PM Page 18

According to Benedict, today’s increased level ofgovernment regulations and bus inspections aremaking it more difficult for bus/coach companies tostart in the industry. However, he does feel thatthose existing companies, following all of the rulesand regulations and maintaining solid safetyrecords, seem to be doing well. “It all comes down to focusing on your goals, as

a company, and to not compromise. We (at DavidThomas Trailways) need to keep the highest level ofcustomer service, quality and safety standards inplace. As long as we do that, we will continuallyattract additional institutional clientele,” Benedictsaid. “A lot of companies focus on working on pricealone, but we focus on providing quality and serv-ice. We might not get the customer the first time webid for a job, but a lot of times when customershave a bad experience, they will give us a try. We have a very good trackrecord when it comes to keeping customers. We don’t cut corners.”Looking back at what has been accomplished in the past 34 years

gives Benedict great pleasure as he helps his three companies plan forthe future. He has found the transportation industry to be very fulfill-ing as well as challenging. “You have to love this industry to be successful. Being a bus oper-

ator is a 24/7 job and involves high risk. Every time you put a vehi-cle on the road there is a risk. You really have to love what you aredoing. It’s not a 9 to 5 job,” Benedict said. “I’m still very ‘hands-on’as president, giving advice and making decisions. I’m also active inthe industry, such as being on the board for the Greater New JerseyMotorcoach Association and the Pennsylvania Bus Association. It’simportant for me to be involved in the two states where our three

companies are very active. “Also, I participate in several peer groups involving different opera-

tors. One group meets every six weeks, while the other gets together ona quarterly basis. We discuss best practices.”Benedict said there are great benefits that come from networking with

other bus operators. “You can’t be on an island in this business. You always need people

and people need you. I quite often get calls where somebody’s bus is outof service or they need a bus cleaned, etc. We are glad to help,” he said.“Being active in the industry and with these peer groups not only helpsour three companies remain successful, but our customers as well.”

While the Maryland Tran sitAdmin istration (MTA), adivision of the Maryland

Department of Trans portation, isone of the largest multi-modal tran-sit systems in the United States, itis bus transit that anchors its oper-ations.“We are primarily a bus transit

operation,” said MTA Administ -rator and CEO Robert L. Smith.“We operate 68 fixed-routes, acc -ounting for 20 million revenuemiles per year. Depending on whatis being measured, such as budget, miles traveled, number of vehicles, etc., MTA is somewhere in the top15 largest transit properties in theUnited States.”Among MTA’s services are local

and commuter buses, light rail,Metro Subway, Maryland AreaRegional Commuter (MARC) trainservice and a paratransit system.“Our fleet includes 750 buses,

100 subway cars and 53 light rail cars,” Smithsaid. “Currently, we have 42 locomotives on

our commuter service with 105 passenger cars.We primarily provide public bus transit servic-es in the city of Baltimore and four surround-ing counties.“We are pleased that the average age of our

buses is just over six years. We have a replace-

ment plan that we believe is robust and ade-quate for what we need.”According to Smith, the state’s current gov-

ernor, Martin O’Malley, and the state legisla-ture have supported the use of alternativefueled transit vehicles.“While the state has not issued any man-

dates, they have taken a very aggressive stancewhen it comes to environmental goals,” Smith

said. “As a result, all of MTA’s buspurchases are now diesel-electrichybrids. Indeed, more than 50 per-cent of our fleet is currently com-prised of diesel-electric buses. Wenow have fewer than 150 ‘dirty’diesel buses and the remainder ofour fleet are either ‘clean’ diesel ordiesel-electric hybrids.”MTA is also a statewide agency.

It acts as the grantor of federalfunds for local operated transit sys-tems throughout the state ofMaryland.“We provide planning assistance,

some engineering assistance, specwriting and other services to thestate’s locally operated transit sys-tems,” Smith said. “Today, MTAlogs well over 110 million tripsannually, about 68 million of whichare on the bus.”MTA can trace it roots back to the

early 1800s, when it was originallyfounded as a rail line, according to

Smith.“We didn’t begin official bus lines until

1909. In 1915, the Baltimore Transit Companywas formed as a subsidiary under one of thelocal utilities, United Railway and ElectricCompany,” Smith said. “By 1971, we had tran-sitioned from The Baltimore Transit Companyto the Metropolitan Transit Authority. In 1973,the authority took over most suburban busoperations and rail commuter services.“In the 1980s, we got back into the rail busi-

ness in a big way. We opened our light rail linein 1982 and our Metro Subway System in1983, which runs from Baltimore north toReisterstown.”The authority changed its named to the

Public transportation continues to gain in importance as different U.S. population

segments opt for travel alternatives other than the automobile. Busline Magazine

recently spoke with an executive from the award-winning MTA to find out how this

system is meeting the ever-growing needs of its new bus ridership.

“Our No. 1 goal is safety first. We are 100 percent

invested in ensuring that safety and security are No. 1.

Right behind safety and security in importance is

customer service.” — MTA Administrator and CEO Robert L. Smith.

Maryland Transit Administration in 2001.“The vast majority of our riders are com-

muters traveling to and from work,” Smithsaid. “MTA runs commuter bus servicesstatewide. For the Baltimore region, we runcommuter buses into downtown Washington,D.C., and also downtown Baltimore.“Many of our routes operate 24/7. We have

a good number of folks who don’t own auto-mobiles in the area, and they rely on us exclu-sively for their travel needs.”Smith said MTA meets with two ridership

committees on a monthly basis to help addressthe riding public’s needs and to continuallyimprove the system.

“We have a Citizen’s Action Committeethat has been around for decades. Theyserve as advisors and advocates for bettertransit,” Smith said. “We have another com-mittee that provides feedback as it relates topeople with disabilities and accessible trans-portation, be it buses, trains or our para-transit service.”MTA calls its paratransit operation

Mobility/Paratransit, and it operates more than300 vehicles. According to the authority, thisADA (Americans with Disabilities Act) certi-fied door-to-door service is for people withdisabilities who are unable to ride or navigatefixed-route public transportation, includinglift-equipped buses.

“Like many other transit operations inthe country, Mobility/Paratransit is growingfaster than we can keep up,” Smith said.“We’ve been using local private taxi compa-nies to help us meet this demand.”According to the MTA, its Call-a-Ride

Service or C.A.R. Service is an on-demand,premium taxi/sedan service that providesincreased independence for people with dis-abilities. The service is available to MTA-cer-tified Mobility/Paratransit customers whomeet the eligibility requirements. MTA Call-a-Ride Service is not part of MTAMobility/Paratransit service, but rather is aseparate and distinct MTA service providedunder contract by participating area taxi andsedan companies. “MTA will pay up to $20 per taxi ride,”

Smith said. “The customer pays any amountover $20. This service has grown significantlythe past few years. It is something our passen-gers take advantage of as they see it as anoption or alternative to the fixed-route and/orMobility/Paratransit services.”Top MTA priorities are safety and customer

service. The authority recently received a safe-ty award presented by the American PublicTransportation Association (APTA), whichwas announced at the organization’s annualBus & Paratransit Conference in May inKansas City, MO.APTA presented MTA with a Gold Award

for Security in the bus systems with 20 millionor more passenger trips annually category. The

award honored MTA for forming its ServiceSafety Task Force to enhance on-board safetyfor its bus operators.“I am really proud of this award,” Smith

said. “We were looking to find ways to makeour employees safer while out on the street. Itis something that we take very seriously. Wenot only want our riding public to feel safe andsecure, but our employees, as well.

“Our No. 1 goal is safety first. We are 100percent invested in ensuring that safety andsecurity are No. 1. Right behind safety andsecurity in importance is customer service. Wehave a high average tenure among our employ-ees. MTA employs 3,300 people, of which

about 2,300 are actual service delivery person-nel. We are involved in the community. MTAsponsors several events in the Baltimoreregion. We really get our employees involvedand customer service is something that weemphasize.“Our governor has a very aggressive goal to

double ridership in the state of Maryland. Inorder to make that goal, we must focus on cus-tomer service. “We strive to be an agile agency that under-

stands where people live, where they work, where they shop, what medical facilities theyvisit, etc. We are trying to be agile enough with

our bus service that we can make real-timeadjustments to meet our customers’ needs.“A year ago our state legislature and our

governor did something we thought was very

brave by passing a dedicated gasoline tax toensure we have the ability to grow our serviceand to accomplish system preservation.”To help ensure MTA is meeting customers’

needs, the authority launched its Bus NetworkImprovement Project in August 2013.“The project was designed to be a year-long

process, which includes a series of meetingswith our customers, unions, employees andridership groups. We are basically doing a verycomprehensive view of our system. It has beenmore than a decade since we have taken an

overall look at our bus service,” Smith said.“The effort includes looking to find ways toincrease speed and to increase connectivity, whether it is between buses or between busesand rail service. We want to make sure that weare going where folks want to go. If there arenew job centers, do we provide an adequate

service to those job centers? This is a big dealto us right now. We expect over the next five tosix years we will implement various portionsof what comes out of the study.”One of the issues MTA will be looking into

as it reviews transit service is how to best servean increasing population of people who arereturning to the urban core to live and work.“Urbanization is definitely a trend in the

Baltimore and Washington, D.C., region,”Smith said. “In our area, there are condosgoing up in neighborhoods that were once not

growing. In fact, there are a lot more down-town units now, along with a variety of trans-portation options. We have the MillennialGeneration that is choosing to use public tran-sit, car sharing services such as Zipcar, plusbicycles and biker trails. Meeting the needs ofthese urbanites is all part of our short- andlong-range planning efforts.”Looking ahead, Smith said there many posi-

tives to be considered in the area of publictransit in the Maryland region. “We are on a solid foundation as it relates to

funding. We were recently added to the presi-dent’s (President Obama) budget for the fund-ing of two new rail lines in our area,” he said.“We are continuing with our Bus NetworkImprovement Project and we are collaboratingwith planning organizations in the city ofBaltimore and others in the region to ensurethat we grow smart. “The state of Maryland is very focused on

transit which is one of many ingredients thatmakes our region progressive, livable and sus-tainable. We are in an area of the countrywhere transit is not only necessary, but accept-ed and desired by the riding public.”Contact: Maryland Transit Administration, 6 St. Paul St., Baltimore, MD 21202-1614.

“We strive to be an agile agency that understands

where people live, where they work, where they shop,
