The rural Tshivhase Secondary School has again produced the top Grade 12 pupil in the province. In 2013 Ntsundeni Ndou put the school on the map as the province’s best. Now a pupil from Mukumbani village, Fulufhelani Mashapha (18), is the top learner in the province. During the official announcement of the 2015 Grade 12 results at The Ranch Hotel near Polokwane on Wednesday, the MEC for Education, Mr Ishmael Kgetjepe announced that out of the 101 575 learners who wrote ma- tric in Limpopo, only 66 946 have passed. The Limpopo pass rate is 65.9%, the national pass rate is 70.7% and Western Cape is again the best performing province with a pass rate of 84.7%. Thengwe Secondary is the overall best performing school in the province, followed by Mbilwi and Tshivhase Secondary, also from Vhembe. Vhembe is also the top district in the province. Fulufhelani Mashapha, the province’s top pupil received three trophies for her achievements. She obtained seven distinctions and passed Mathematics and Natural Science with 100%. She advised other pupils to find successful people as role mod- els. “Having role models in life usually helps a person to be able to draw a picture of where he or she wants to be in future,” she added. Mashapha is going to study Actuarial Sciences at the University of Cape Town. She said that success only comes after hard work. She, however, encouraged other pupils who had not made it the past year to work very hard and not give up. “Your knock-down is not your knock-out,” she added. The second placed Haman- dishe Mathivha of Mbilwi High said that time man- agement, disci- pline and hard work were the most important things that had made him achieve good results. He said that his success was due to the grace of God. The support he got from both the teachers and his parents was also imperative for his success, he added. MEC Kgetjepe advised the pupils to study hard, as it is up to an individual to make it or fail in life. He said the scholars should know what they want to achieve in life and should also take decisions that they would not regret later in life. “Pupils and teachers had to sweat it out in order to reap the rewards at the end of the year,” he added. Mr Mpho Alfred Mulele was unemployed, but it did not pre-vent him to make a meaningful life for himself and those close to him.

Daily the 31-year-old un-married man from Itsani would venture to a local village dam and fish. He would use some for himself and sell the rest to the community.

On New Year’s day he went to the dam as usual with a friend. It is alleged that he went into the waters and launched his self-made boat. During the second attempt to do this he apparently ran into some problems and the boat sank. Mulele disappeared under the water and he drowned.

News about the drowning hit the village and neighbouring villages in an instant via social media. Within a very short space of time the dam was swarming with curious onlookers. The dam is believed to have swallowed more than ten people in recent

times through drownings. It is also alleged that some of the vic-tims were killed somewhere else and dumped in the deep waters.

The latest drowning has been widely condemned by members of the community who blame government for not doing enough to deny people access to the dam. Apostle Ramudzuli Albert Lehangwa, who was at the dam to comfort the family, said the dam served no purpose in the commu-nity and that it should be fenced off. “So many lives are said to have been lost in this dam and we are worried that government is still mining soil from the dam, without even considering the safety of the community. Many children risk their lives swim-ming in these dangerous waters and the worst is still to come if nothing is done here,” he said.

Local civic leader, Mr Job Ramawa said that they have de-liberated about safety at the dam during meetings at the Tshisahulu

Royal Council. “A prospective developer will soon take over the area for use as a resort and we will expedite this, so that the area could be secured to avert such nasty incidents,” he said.

Mutele’s sister, Ms Ornica Singo said she last spoke to her brother on New Year’s eve in church. “He was in good spirits and I was very shocked to re-ceive the bad news this morning. He was very close to us as our brother and served as a father and mother to us. He left a big void in our hearts and we are really in pain,” she said.

Thohoyandou police spokes-person Major Mashudu Malelo confirmed the incident. “We have opened an inquest docket and we are appealing to residents not to venture into deep waters, either for fishing or swimming, as there are dangers of drowning and being attacked by water ani-mals like crocodiles and hippos,” he said.

Well-known fisherman drowns at Itsani

Property set on fire in ongoing feud between leaders

Divers and other rescuers gathered at the Itsani Dam.

The chieftainship feud between tra-ditional leaders in the Vuwani area recently took an ugly turn when al-leged supporters of a senior traditional leader went on the rampage, burning three houses, three cars and a caravan belonging to Chief Nevu, Chief Calson Nemaridili Tshitavha and Chief Nevu’s sister, Joyce Matamela, who resides at Vyeboom.

The incident that took place in broad daylight on Tuesday just before Christ-mas, has sent shockwaves through the local community.

The feud has been ongoing with the two traditional leaders alleging that the other was occupying the area illegally.

In the first incident, a big house belonging to Chief Nelson Ra-mathithi or Nevu, two vehicles and a hut were burnt to ashes, when a mob of more than 50

people, allegedly supporters of a senior traditional leader in the area, attacked the royal palace at Vu. Chief Nevu was not at home at the time of the attack.

A girl at the house, who preferred an-onymity, said she and other family mem-bers were at home when the mob came and broke the gate in the presence of police.

“They were shouting that they were going to destroy everything. Fearing for our lives as police were not doing anything to stop them, we fled to nearby bushes and watched from a distance as our belongings went up in smoke. We were not able to save anything and all what we are left with are the clothes we are wearing.”

Chief Nemaridili Tshitavha, whose home was also burnt to the ground, said that incidents preceding the attack were reported to the local police and that they had been warned about the impend-ing attack, but nothing was done to stop the attack.

Vuwani police spokesperson W/ O Elijah Malatjie, who visited the scenes of the attacks, said they have arrested seven people in connection with the incidents.

“They appeared in court on the 31st of December 2015 and their case was postponed to 7 January for a formal bail application. The suspects were remanded in custody,” he said.

A house belonging to Chief Nevu’s relative at Vyeboom was also attacked.

In the final edition of Limpopo Mirror of 2015, we reported on the stories that attracted the most interest throughout the year. The news report on the tragic death of local gospel star, Mpho Victor “Rigalo” Gangashe (photo) in May last year was our s e c o n d r a n k e d story. The report on our website was visited by nearly 195 000 readers. I n t h e r e p o r t we erroneous ly mentioned that he was 49 years old. I t came to our attention that the singer was only 29 years old when he was killed in a vehicle accident near Bandelierkop.

Five killed in horrific taxi accidentFormer Limpopo transport MEC and veteran political activist, Dr Tshenuwani Farisani has urged commuters to exercise their right to life by saying no to unruly driving behaviour.

Farisani commented after a partic-ularly horrific accident that had killed five passengers and injured scores of others, had happened at Khalavha out-side Thohoyandou. A taxi transporting people from a church service at Vuwani lost control and rolled several times down a steep slope.

The accident occurred in the early hours of New Year's Day. Four passen-gers died at the scene, while the fifth died in hospital. The taxi is alleged to have been transporting 28 passengers instead of the permitted 16. Speaking at

the scene of the accident, Farisani said that passengers have a right to life and should exercise that right to the fullest all the time.

"Looking at the number of passen-gers the taxi was allegedly carrying, it is unacceptable that passengers allowed the driver to continue with the trip even though it was overloaded, and gam-bling with their lives in the process. This must end and traffic officials and other law enforcement departments must arrest those who breach road rules," he said. W/O Edward Tharaga of the police at Siloam has confirmed that the police are investigating a cul-pable homicide case.

Meanwhile different stakeholders met at the Vhulaudzi community hall to chart the way forward in preparing for

the burial of the victims who are mostly from the surrounding villages. A Task Team was also formed to coordinate the funerals.

Task Team spokesman and the councillor for Thulamela Ward 27, Cllr Livhuwani Maduse, said that the deceased are Tshavhungwa Mauna and Mashudu Sibadela from Dopeni, Thangavhuelelo Rendani and Avhap-fani Nemaangani from Murunwa, and Abraham Muvhumbe of Maelula. "Ev-erything is going according to plan and we are working hard with the affected families and we are hopeful that we will give the deceased dignified funerals."

He indicated that the deceased would be buried at their villages on Saturday morning (tomorrow).

Residents keep on com-plaining about not want-

ing to belong “here or there” - and this is what the Vhembe District has gone through and is still going through. But who is to blame for this mess?

I put the blame for the mess on the Demarcation Board and the leaders who approved this sick demarcation. Those who are saying they want another municipality and those against it are right, albeit for their own (good) reasons.

Let’s look at the old order and why I say it was wrongly transformed.

In the Vhembe area there are about 800 000 Venda speaking residents, centred in the district. In the direction of the former Gazankulu, there are about 400 000 Shangaan/Tsonga speaking residents. Add to this the former white areas and it becomes clear that in Vhembe there is a majority and minority groups.

Probably the biggest mistake is that Venda speaking residents seem to have a perception that “we are in the driver’s seat and we rule them.” From a Tsonga/Shangaan perception it is “

we have been absorbed and (are being) ruled.” So now we have Venda speaking majority whose previous set-up was not tampered with, while the 2,1 million Tsonga/Shangaans have been split up into Vhem-be, Mopani and even into the Mpumalanga province.

To me the Venda speaking residents were given an unfair advantage over the Tsonga/Shangaan without it being their fault. Part of its former boundaries were supposed to have been allocated to Capricon (Tshitale and Nthabalala) and Blouberg (Sinthumule-Kutama and Musina). This would have made sense that all former homelands had been disman-tled.

To be honest this has since pitted the two groups at odds and no wonder on the issue of renaming the town Louis Trich-ardt, the Tsonga/Shangaans sided with whites against the name change, because the two believe they are being margin-alised. You also can’t blame them, since they believe the name favours Vendas.

Historically as Blacks, whether being Tsonga/Shan-

gaan or Venda, we were subjected to the same oppres-sion by the Whites, so once we Blacks start to turn against one another it simply translate to frustrations. We must be ashamed of that and have seri-ous introspection. Why should democracy divide us instead of uniting us? Are we now living the life of Animal Farm? All animals are equal, but some are more equal than others?

Could it be that money is an evil that can turn friends into sworn enemies.

The solution is to start all over again with the demarcation process. It must demonstrate inclusiveness to all groups.

Be sensitive about the renam-ing of places and institutions. There is also no reason to make Thohoyandou the economic centre of the region over the more viable Louis Trichardt.

Let me remind you that where there are no chaos does not mean people are satisfied with where they belong. Give integration and transformation a chance, but correct the mistakes of the past. - Solani Mashim-bye, Waterval

Traditional dance celebrations at MapungubweA large number of traditional dance groups, representa-tives of traditional leaders from Vhembe, Capricorn and Sekhukhune, and fans from all walks of life attended the Matsila traditional dance celebrations at Mapungubwe a fortnight ago.

Chief Livuwani Matsila of Matsila Development Trust said that their main aim was to bring all the winners of the different events of the recent Phalaphala FM and Matsila Development Trust traditional dance compe-tition together for a grand finale. The event catered for Vhavenda, Tsonga and Babedi traditional dancing.

The event was opened with the Dinaka of Bapedi, Xigumbu of Batsonfa, tshikona and tshi-gombela and malende dances.

Matsila added that there was a need to teach young children about the value of culture and the importance of restoring it. “Culture and tradition are foundations on which the pros-perity of each nation is built. It is important to continue with initiatives of this nature for the sake of our children. A nation that does not respect its culture is doomed and does not have any direction.”

He further encouraged com-munity members to be proud of their cultural practices.

Chief Kgabo Moloto of Mo-letjie said that they found the day very important in that it reminded the youth of where they came from.

“We are mixed culturally, and we do not want the children to forget their roots and shy away from their culture.

Some of them do not even know their rich cultural foods and some think that cultural dances are barbaric.”

The programme manager of Phalaphala FM, Ms Sharon Ravele said that she is extreme-ly proud of her culture, adding that their station is assisting in restoring the culture and dignity of the Vhavenda people.

NEWS: FHATUWANI LIDZEBE, TSHIITAMUNE VHUTSHILO, NEMAFHOHONI LIVHUWANI AND RAVHUHALI SANDRA Beloved politician and professional nurse, the

late Mashudu Constance Nethavhani.

Madimbo village almost came to a standstill when politicians, worshippers, traditional lead-ers, health workers and local villagers came in large numbers to pay tribute to Ms Mashudu Constance Nethavhani (48), who was buried on Sunday.

A professional nurse, who was loved by almost everyone in the village, Nethavhani was also a former councillor for Ward 1 of the Musina Mu-nicipality. A staunch member of the Zion Christian Church (ZCC), Nethavhani died last week after falling ill.

The current ward councillor, Mr Fistos Mafela acknowledged that Nethavhani laid a good founda-tion for him when he took over four years ago. All the speakers recognized the good work that Neth-avhani did for the community both as a politician and a health worker at Madimbo clinic.

Musina Mayor, Cllr Mihloti Muhlope said Neth-avhani will always be remembered for being the driver of changes within the communities she lived. “She was a good servant of the people and losing

her is a terrible blow for all of us. All we have to do is to give full support to the family to make sure that their loved one is given a dignified send-off. We are really very saddened by her untimely depar-ture. The family has already suffered enough pain and we should always be there to comfort them.”

She added that instead of constantly shedding tears, “we must also go down the memory lane and remember the good things that Nethavhani did for this community while she was still alive. Musina Municipality and Madimbo clinic are what they are now because of contributions by people like her. She will always be remembered for putting people first.”

Speakers at the emotional funeral included representatives from the Nethavhani family, ANC, friends, neighbours, Department of Health, Democratic Nursing Organization of South Africa (DENOSA), ZCC, Madimbo Royal House and the South African National Civic Organization (SANCO).

The burning issue of the illegal mining of sand came under the spotlight during the inau-guration of junior traditional leader, Litshedzani Samuel Ravhura at Lungane last week.

Lungane is a sub-village of Makonde under the senior tra-ditional leadership of Thovhele Vho-Tshilidzi Edward Ravhura.

Samuel succeeds his father, Raphalalani Ravhura who passed away in 2009. Since then, the sub-village was ruled by a family council and after consultation with the relevant family mem-bers, it was unanimously agreed that Samuel was ready to take over. Samuel’s ndumi is Lufuno Ravhura and his khadzi is Azwimpheleli Nethengwe.

T h o v h e l e Vho-Ravhura said that people took advantage of the period when Lun-gane did not have an appointed traditional leader and they started mining sand illegally.

“The proceeds of the sand sales never ben-efitted the poorest of the poor in this village. As I am installing you now, I instruct you to make sure that the il-legal mining of sand is stopped with immediate effect here in Lungane,” he said.

He urged the new ju-nior traditional leader

to respect his subjects and stay away from corrupt activities. “A good leader serves his sub-jects with distinction and never involves himself in corrupt ac-tivities. Treat all your subjects equally and serve them without discrimination. This will make your ancestors happy and your subjects will also respect you in return. Try to resolve all the petty issues with your council and only come to me to give reports and to elevate complex issues that you cannot resolve.”

When accepting his new role, Samuel agreed that he will fol-low in the footsteps of his late

father. “I will rule my subjects with fairness and I will always consult my council and the fam-ily whenever I take decisions. I will work hard to bring more development to this village,” he said.

K h o t s i m u n e n e L e s l e y Tshivhase said he will inform Thovhele Kennedy Tshivhase that the inauguration went on smoothly.

“By inviting us, it demon-strates that the Ravhura family respects the Tshivhases as their seniors. We hope other tradition-al leaders will learn from this practice of respect.”

The mothers of babies born on Christmas and New Year’s Day received gifts during an awareness session, when the mayor of the Thulamela Municipality, Cllr Grace Mahosi, visited local hospitals. Accompanied by executive members of the council, Cllr Mahosi handed out gifts to the mothers at Donald Frazer and Tshilidzi hospitals. Mahosi pleaded with the mothers to take care of their babies. “We wish them a healthy, long life and we are confident that all the babies will become future leaders who will be able to contribute to the development of our country,” she said. One of the mothers, Ms Tlangelani Hlungwane said she appreciates the gifts and that it feels good to give birth on a special day like Christmas. On New Year’s Day, the MEC of Health, Ms Phophi Ramathuba also visited several hospitals in the Vhembe District. A 17-year-old boy is still battling to get to grips with his life, twelve years after his mother had left him with his father and disappeared. At this stage he is unable to get an ID card, because he needs the help of his mother to apply for a birth certificate.

Ntlantla Maqoga said that he needs to reconnect with his mother. “I am growing into a man and my life will not be good without a birth certificate, which will also be needed when I get to apply for an ID card,” he said. “My life is complicated and there’s only one person who holds the key to unlock the complication – that person is my mother.”

Ntlantla is currently in Grade 9 and he stays with his paternal grand-mother, Vho-Mmadazho Manavhela, in Madom-bidzha village.

Ntlantla briefly saw his mother when he was about five years old during a visit to Thembisa in Gauteng.

A c c o r d i n g t o Vho-Mmadazho, Nt-lantla’s father, Ed-ward Manavhela, had met his love Nozuko Meisie Maqoga Ma-bongo when he was living around Thembisa and Alexandra, during the late 1990’s. “My son brought Ntlantla here around 2003 and I have been looking after him ever since then,” she said. “I tried several times to apply for his birth certifi-cate, but the officials at Home Affairs said that they could not assist since he is using his mother’s surname. His mother is needed before

he could get offered a birth certifi-cate. And how am I to help this little child of God? His mother must avail herself.”

However, it is believed that No-zuko is no longer around Thembisa or Alexandra; but that she is at her home somewhere in Mthatha, in the Eastern Cape.

Ntlantla said: “I would like to connect with my mother. It is not good growing up without a mother either. Sometimes I need to feel like mama’s child and that is not happen-ing. Mama, please, wherever you are, know that I need you and I love you.”

Those with relevant information which could help Ntlantla connect with his mother can contact his uncle, Mr Philly Manavhela on 072 553 3442.

17-year old in a desperatesearch for his mother

“Parents play important part in future of their children”

Ntlantla Maqoga would like to reconnect with his mother.

The guests together with some of the community members pose for a photo after the event.

“The future of our young people lies in the hands of the youths themselves,” said the managing director of the Shisasi Foundation and founder of the Hlanganani community radio station, Mr Basil Mabasa.

He addressed hundreds of residents during the Pfunani Foundation for Growth community engagement day which was held at Dakari village at the Pfunekani Primary School last Wednesday.

Mabasa encouraged the youth to use education as their foundation in whatever they plan to be-come in life.

“Even if you become a prospering sportsman, you need a certain level of education so that you

can be able to manage your financ-es,” he said. A representative from the Inspired Leadership Network Organisation, Mr TI Manganyi, told the people about the various ways in which they could access funding from different institutions.

When addressing the people who braved the scorching sun, the found-er of the Pfunani Foundation for Growth, Ms Tinyiko Mathebula, appealed to the parents to fulfil their role as mentors of their own children saying most children become drug and alcohol addicts because of their parents’ conduct. She stated that although it is legally prohibited for

children below the age of 18 to buy alcohol, some parents do not see anything wrong in sharing drugs and alcohol with their own children at taverns and liquor stores.

She reiterated the fact that parents play an important role in determining the future of their children saying children live according to what they see at their parents.

During the event, a representative from the African National Congress Women’s League, Ms TR Hlomela, also appealed to the people to group themselves and form co-operatives so that they could become employers instead of employees.

Phalaphala FM’s youngest news bulletin editor, Ms Murendeni Muhali (31) excels in her job.

Muhali’s radio career started at Univen Radio while studying at the University of Venda. A Bachelor of Economics graduate, Muhali joined the SABC seven years ago.

She said her initial dream was to study drama. “When my dream could not be realised due to cir-cumstances, I had to consider the option of studying towards my current degree. My love for radio was unshakeable,” she said.

She received a certifi cate in Business Communication and a certifi cate in Management Principles for fi rst-line managers, both with the University of South Africa. She is currently regis-tered for a couple of economics modules for non-degree purposes “in order to have more understanding of the political, social and econom-ic land-

scape.”She added that she was not yet

satisfi ed with her recent success, as she plans to achieve more in life. “I’m still young and there is still more to offer to my commu-nity.”

As a bulletin editor, Muhali is responsible for sourcing, pro-viding and editing quality news bulletins that are suitable for radio audiences, refl ecting stories that are relevant both locally and internationally. She is also aware of the different audiences of the station’s news bulletins. She said her listeners are very important to her and she appreciates their continuous support.

“Being on a platform where you interact with listeners is a huge responsibility. As editor, I always make sure that I get the latest updates for listeners around

the world,” she said. “I research a lot, as I believe that the

team needs to excel when we go on air. We

Debut album for Ras Tondi & Muvapo

By Kaizer Nengovhela

By Tshifhiwa Mukwevho

Reggae music lovers had the opportunity during the festive season to enjoy live perfor-mances of The Next Generation artists when they were in action at Mutale Town Hall.

The band, which comprise of Judah, Jah Sol-diers, Lufuno Munzhelele, Arinao Nemutandani, Mulalo Mulaudzi, Mashudu Pandelani, Thanzi, and Emmanuel Rammbuda, gave electrifying performances and left all fans delighted. The per-formances marked the band’s national tour which started at Mutale on 26 December 2015, and will continue through this year in other provinces.

The spokesperson for The Next Generation Band, Lufuno Munzhelele, said that they were excited by the massive turn-up of fans who appre-ciated their music in Mutale. “We can confi dently say that reggae music is here to stay,” he said. “People had shown great interest in live music performances and we had promised them to come back again some time this year.”

The Next Generation Band was formed around 2011 by men who shared common interests – they would get together on Saturdays and Sundays for a meal, while they played music instruments for fun. Soon they realised that they could play songs by major reggae artists and also compose new songs. “That’s when an idea to start a formal band creeped in our minds,” Munzhelele said.

Munzhelele said that the band will be recording a full-length album some time this year, “but we are not sure about the release date. We will also see how things unfold as time goes on,” he said. “In the meantime, let’s enjoy live performances as we tour some provinces. We will keep all people updated.”

For more information, Munzhelele can be reached on 073 266 9655.

In our photo are (from left to right) Chancey Nengwenani, Tony Mukosi, Arinao Nemutandani, Mashudu Pandelani and Lufuno Munzhelele. Junior Sikheli is in front.

Aron Rasivhetshele, better known as 30 Mrepa in the local Venda Rap (VenRap) mu-sic circles, recently stole the show during the Ndamu Guest House Annual Music Festival in Makonde.

Although he does not have a distinctive posture, 30 Mrepa left everyone crying for more when he descended the stage. His acrobatic dances, excep-tional vocal fl ow and engagement with fans gave him a clear advantage over other artists whom he shared the stage with.

Rasivhetshele, who stays at Makonde village, said that he had made a name for himself in other places “and this was the time to impress people from home. Most of the people here just know me as a local young boy, but it was the perfect opportunity to realize my potential in front of the people from my home. I’m happy because I also have managed to impress those who took me for granted.”

He mentioned after the performance that he is receiving bookings on a daily basis. “When God open doors, no one can close them. Due to that electric performance, I have gigs lining up and I will make sure that I put in the extra effort to impress more. I’m also happy that my music is receiving massive airplay both on Phalaphala FM and regional community radio stations.”

An electrical engineer by profession, Rasivhet-shele says apart from his supporters, he also owes his success to Papa Thile, Ramzee Bamba, Adolf and V-Boy. “Those are my musical teachers who made me what I am today.”

Rihone “Muvapo” Nevhutalu of Mukula (15) describes his short career in music as a “long and winding road.” He is in Grade 9 at the Mukula Integrated School.

He and Rotondwa “Ras Tondi” Rahwaha recently released a hip-hop album. They call themselves Ras Tondi and the Muvapo FNB Crew and the name of the album is Ndila dzo Vulea.

Nevhutalu grew up listening to musicians like Mizo and Racha Kill, and he describes them as his inspiration. “Mizo is my role model and he encouraged me a lot.”

Despite having plenty of songs readily availa-ble, he had to raise funds for the project himself. He is gaining popularity because of his unique style, which consists of heavy bass sounds, some chopping sounds and occasional brass instru-ments. He sings about personal experiences “and what I see happening in my vicinity,” he said.

Three of the nine songs on the album, that is already popular among the youth, are Ndila Dzovulea, Mma na Daddy, and the title track Ndila dzovulea. The album is available at local music outlets. “I will continue singing this type of music as it is proving very popular, he said. He added that his father, Maitele Nevhutalu, an esteemed Tshivenda author, also encourages him to follow his musical dream.

Wesifa and Sendedza in Muravha final

MMK Administrators’ League to resume

Gogo Mabege celebrates 105th birthday

The Rabali Home Defenders grounds in the Nzhelele Valley will be the centre of attraction tomorrow (Saturday). This is where the much-awaited final for the Muravha Building and Civil Soccer Challenge will be staged.

The teams that will meet in the final are the defending champions Wesifa Masters and Sendedza Masters.

Sendedza’s way to the final went via Mandiwana Masters whom they beat 5-3 in their semi-final match at the Rabali Home Defenders ground last Saturday. The winner was deter-mined through penalty shoot-out

as the score was 2-2 at the end of the regulation time. Wesifa beat Khakhu Masters 3-1 at the same venue the following day to secure a place in the final.

According to the Masters’ League general secretary, Mr Gerson Muravha, tomorrow’s programme will commence with a match between the Nzhelele veterans and their Thohoyandou counterparts, which is scheduled to kick off at 13:00. It will be fol-lowed by the losers’ final match between Mandiwana Masters and Khakhu Masters.

The final is expected to kick off at 17:00 and the prize-giving ceremony will be held at the

ground shortly after the final whistle.

The champions will go home with R1 000, a floating trophy, soccer kit, two soccer balls, a pair of goalkeeper’s gloves and gold medals.

The runners-up will receive R600, a soccer kit, soccer ball and silver medals. The third placed side will take home R400 and a soccer ball while a cash prize of R300 and a soccer ball are awaiting the team that will finish in the fourth spot. The remaining teams will be given consolation prizes of R200 each.

Seventeen teams took part in the annual tournament.

After the festive season break, the teams affiliated to the Safa Vhembe MMK Administra-tors’ League will resume their fixtures at different venues this weekend.

He grandson, Mr M i c h e a l M a l a n g e told Limpopo Mirror that they had organ-ised the event to show their grandmother how much they love her. “It is good to pay tribute to a person while she is still alive,” he said.

G o g o M a l a n g e thanked the family for not sending her to the old-age home and for deciding to live with her. Although her eye-sight is deteriorating, her hearing is still good and according to her family, her mind is still razor-sharp.

She has 17 children, 25 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren. She remembers the old days when there were no schools, clinics, hos-pitals or roads. “We used to travel for long distances on foot, be-cause there were no

cars,” said Mabege. She said that the secret of her long life is eating healthy food and listening to the

elders. “I liked fruit and vegeta-bles throughout my life and I do not use alcohol,” she added.

Gogo Masindi Mabege is helped by two of her grandchildren to cut her birthday cake.

Magaraba too good for Pull TogetherJohannesburg Masters, or Magaraba, retained the Taki Challenge Cup by beating Rabali Pull Together 3-1 at the Rabali Stadium on Sat-urday.

Although they do not play competitive football regularly, Masters managed to outsmart the youthful Pull Together from the onset. The first 20 minutes of the game were characterized by dangerous tackles, but the experienced referee, Mr Mashu-du Sathuma, punished all the culprits. Rudzani Ralushai of Pull Together was the first play-er to go into the referee’s book. He tackled Khuliso Rashamuse from behind just outside the

box.Magaraba took the lead in the

18th minute. Mashudu Sikwayi connected Khuliso Rashamuse’s square pass to beat the keeper with a ground cutter. What could have been Pull Together’s equalizer was ruled offside. Magaraba were two goals ahead when the teams adjourned for half time.

The second goal was scored by Khuliso Rashamuse who forced his way through the defence of Pull Together and showed the keeper, Amon Pho-phi, the wrong way.

Sedzani Mukhodi of Pull Together was also warned with a card for a late tackle to Rudzani

Ramudzuli.Pull Together pulled one back

via Vhutshilo Netshivhazwaulu. He beat the offside trap and blasted in a rocket from close range.

Magaraba regained their original fighting spirit after re-placing Mashudu Sikwayi with Sathiel Phasha. A substitute, Takalani Majika, scored the third goal for Magaraba seven minutes before the final whistle.

Magaraba were presented with a cash prize of R10 000, two sets of soccer kit, a floating trophy and gold medals during a ceremony that was held at the stadium shortly after the final whistle. According to the rules

of the tournament, the champions must do-nate part of their cash prize to the Rabali Re-source Centre and one soccer kit to a club of their own choice.

Magaraba donated the kit to Mudunungu Try Again FC and R2 000 to the centre.

The runners-up, Rabali Pull Together, received R6 000, two sets of soccer kit and silver medals. They donated one of their soccer kits to Fundudzi United Brothers FC.

The t eams tha t were booted out in the semi-finals, Muraida Youth Development FC and Sokoutenda FC, were each given R2 500 and a soccer kit each. Muradia lost 0-1 to Magaraba in the semi-final earlier that day, while Sokoutenda FC were beaten 0-4 by Rabali Pull Together. The four teams which lost in the quarterfinal stage, Tshivhilidulu Hungry Lions, Tshien-deulu New Castle, Si-loam XI Bullets and Tshituni Hot Spurs each received R1 000 and a soccer kit.

Twenty-six teams took part in this year’s competition. Rabali Transport and Altech Company sponsored the tournament.

The captain of Magaraba, Ludzula Mukwevho (middle), receives his team’s trophy from the organisers, Messrs NA Malisha and Freddy Phathela (left).

Rudzani Ramudzuli of Magaraba receives his team’s R10 000 cash prize from the sponsor, Mr Takalani Prince Rabali.

President of Safa Vhembe, Mr George Kubayi.

Just like the previous three sea-sons, the Vhembe Region of the South African Football Associ-ation (Safa) has maintained a clean audit for the 2014/15 soccer season.

This was revealed during the as-sociation’s annual congress recently held at the Vhafamadi Hotel in Siba-sa. When addressing the meeting, the league’s president, Mr George Kubayi, stated that Vhembe Region “was the best in the country when it comes to financial management.” He also indicated that sponsors and donors do not associate themselves with the associations whose finan-cial administration is under suspi-cion. According to him one of the reasons for MMK Administrators to increase their sponsorship with his association was that they real-ized that Safa Vhembe has a sound financial management team. MMK increased the sponsorship from

R400 000 to R450 000 last season.Kubayi also revealed that the

region has a total of 143 affiliate members this season and that the teams which were affiliated to his association shared a total of R687 000 in prize money last season.

When presenting the executive committee’s report, the league’s general secretary, Mr Eric Muneri, stated that the association had a lot of things to be proud of. He said that his region has produced three referees to the national panel. The three whistle men who are doing duty at professional level are Messrs Olani Kwinda, Jelly Chabani and Shumani Tinyani.

The report also reveals that there was a decline in the number of misconduct cases by the clubs last season. A total of 19 clubs were found charged and ultimately found guilty of assaulting match officials last season.

It was evident from the start that Defenders were a more organised team as they outclassed Baroka in all departments. They opened their account in the ninth minute, when their all-rounder, Dakalo “Dairo” Nwanamidwa, was on target, following a neat pass from Aron Lisoga.

Baroka came close to scoring in the 24th minute, but Norman Managa held onto the ball for too long within the Defenders’ danger area, until he lost possession.

Baroka gained some momentum as time went on, and their equalising goal came in the 34th minute.

Mashudu Kutama made no mistake after receiving a pre-cooked pass from Ndwamato Netshaulu.

In the second half, Defenders in-troduced Melvin Mabatha for Dakalo Nwanamidwa and the

"Fire Boys" responded by replac-ing Jomo Muronga with Innocent Mamuthubi. Ndaedzo Mareda of Defenders scored the winning goal

in the 80th minute.Dakalo Nwaanamidwa was named

player of the tournament, while Mel-vin Mabatha and Ndaedzo Mareda of Defenders were the top goal scorers. Faith Ratombo of Muraleni United Brothers was the best goalkeeper and Mr Sadwell Phuravhathu, coach of Defenders, was announced as the coach of the tournament.

Warning to local avo farmers

“Work with police to create a safer environment”

Residents must respect their culture, says King Toni

Local avocado farmers should take head of a warning issued by the Subtropical Growers Association.

This week the association warned that immature avocados, which will not ripen properly, will be pulled from the fresh produce market. In effect this will mean that such avocados will not be allowed to be sold. This is in terms of the Agricultural Product Standards Act, the association said in press release on Monday.

According to the association imma-ture fruit was previously downgraded to ‘lowest grade’, but could still be sold up. However, since 2014, the sale of such fruit will be prohibited.

Every grower will be liable for their fruit and will have to ensure that it meets the required maturity standard before picking. The association advised growers to approach repu-table avocado packhouses, who are equipped to carry out the necessary maturity testing.

Inspectors from the Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries (DAFF) and Prokon will be deployed at all the national fresh produce mar-kets to check for immature avocados.

For further information on matu-rity testing , contact the Subtropical Growers Association at Tel 015 307 3676/7.

Jane wins half-marathonWell-known local long distance athlete, Jane Mudau, won the Lu-fule Road Safety half-marathon at Lufule a fortnight ago. The race was organised by the Lufule community road safety project and athletes competed in 21,1km, 10km and 5km races and a 5km fun walk.

M r V h u l a h a n i Nemadzhilili, organ-iser of the event, said that the main idea was to keep the people fit and teach them about health.

He said that this was the second year that the walk took place and he was happy with the atten-dance.

He said the elderly were a true example to the young people.

Chief Aluonesi Mphephu encouraged the women and elder-ly who participated in the races and said that by maintaining an active lifestyle they are a very good exam-ple to their children and grandchildren. “You must focus on positive things, rath-er than worry about things that you can-not change. Although many of the partici-pants were of an ad-vanced age, what they are doing shows that they are still young in spirit.”

He commended the organisers for keeping the communities fit.

“Let’s do away with the idea that elders are supposed to sit at home, doing nothing until sunset,” he added.

The race was sponsored by Vha-tanzi Transport, Thituwi Transport, Coca Cola Fortune, TTM Trading & Project and Ugwa Consulting Services.

Jane Muadu photographed shortly before crossing the finishing line.

The station commander of the Tshil-wavhusiku police, Lt Col Freddy Shirinda, urged all community mem-bers to work hand in glove with the police for a safer environment within the policing area.

He was recently addressing community members in a quest for the community to work with the police in the fight against

crime. The event was hosted by the police

station, in partnership with the Pastors’ Adopt-a-Station forum.

“As the police, we are prepared to con-tinue to work harder in fighting crime,” he said. “We are not going to have mercy with people who act against the law.”

He urged all parents to always keep a

watchful eye on minors. “You must know the whereabouts of

your children at all times, also because many crimes are committed by young-sters, and in many cases these youngsters also fall victim to heinous crimes,” he said.

He said that there were some problem-atic crimes such as cases

of young children and elderly people who get raped in the comfort of their homes by intruders and close relatives.

“It is never enough for the police to work alone without the sup-port from the commu-nities who comprise members of different churches,” he said.

The chairperson for the Pastors’ Adopt-a-Station forum, Pastor Herman Mulaudzi , called on all church leaders and pastors to join the forum, so that all members of the churches will have the courage to speak out against crime.Members from different churches came to offer prayers for the police officers.

Posing after the function are from left: Dr Mathole Motshega, Thulamela mayor Cllr Grace Mahosi, Thovhele Vho-Makuya, Thovhele Vho-Masia,Vhavenda King Toni Mphephu Ramabulana, Thovhole Vho-Gole Mphaphuli and Thovhe Vho-Rambuda.

Mphaphuli Day, which marks the birthday of Thovhele Vho-Gole Mp-haphuli, was celebrated in style a fortnight ago at Makuvha Stadium. The activities to celebrate the event included cultural dances, choirs and musical groups.

The guest speaker for the event was Vhavenda King, Toni Mphephu Ram-abulana who urged all to be united in the preservation of culture. He encouraged families to teach their young ones the history of the Venda people, where they came from and where they were heading, so that it could not be forgotten.

King Toni described it as sad that children and even some parents seem to be proud of the fact that their children cannot pronounce Venda words, but only speak English at home. “Let us invest in our children and by doing so, we will be

investing in the future of the country,” he said.

He emphasised the importance of special cultural days and said a nation without respect for its culture is doomed and has no future. “Other nations have their special days to celebrate their cul-ture. We cannot be left behind and we will continue to be in the forefront of cultural revival,” he said.

King Toni described traditional leaders as the pillars of the communities. “It is important to give them the dignity they deserve. We can build a prosperous na-tion through faith and dedication, but it is also important to put our differences aside and work towards the same goal of nation building.”

In his address, Thovhele Vho-Gole Mphaphuli talked about how the roles of traditional leaders have changed. “Gone

are the days when traditional leaders made important decisions without con-sulting the masses. Traditional leadership is created by God and it is important to build a united nation before Him. The Bible is the only holy book that can guide us to live cleanly and it is our collective duty to make sure that our nation is living according to the will of God,” he said.

“The scourge of HIV/AIDS and alco-hol abuse is destroying the future of our youth and we have to guide them wisely so that they may become responsible future leaders. Alcohol and HIV/AIDS are wiping out our youth and it is only through prayers and the guidance from God that we can defeat the devil. We also need to develop strategies on how we can fight unemployment, hunger and crime, regardless of the denominations to which we belong,” said Mphaphuli.

After a break for three weeks, the affiliates for the National First Division will be in action again this weekend.

It remains to be seen whether Moroka Swallows will rise to the oc-casion and beat Black Leopards when they meet at the Dobsonville Stadium in Johannesburg tomorrow afternoon. While things are moving from bad to worse in the Swallows’ camp, Black Leopards are fast restoring their lost pride following the return of their former coach, Mr Kostadin Papic.

Swallows disappointed the fans be-fore going to the festive season break when they unexpectedly lost 0-1 to the NFD rookies, Mthatha Bucks. The defeat pushed the Birds deep into the relegation quagmire as they are now lying on the third last position on the log. On the other hand, Lidoda Duvha gave their supporters a Christmas gift in the form of league points, when they beat Thanda Royal Zulu 1-0 at the Thohoyandou Stadium.

The most important thing Black Leopards must do tomorrow is keep

a watchful eye on Swallows’ veteran striker, Siyabonga Nomvete. Leop-ards’ right back, Jonathan King, will be available for selection tomorrow. King was out of action for three months due to injury. Should he be given a chance, King can form a deadly combination with Dunga Munganga and Lebohang Mabotja at the far back.

Witbank Spurs will host Cape Town All Star in Emalahleni. Milano United will fly to Phuthaditshaba in the Free State where they will lock horns with African Warriors. Baroka and Amazulu will clash at the Old Peter Mokaba Stadium in Polokwane and Royal Eagles will take on FC Cape Town in Pietermaritzburg.

Sunday will see Thanda Royal Zulu take on Highlandspark at the Umhlathuze Sport Complex in Rich-ards Bay.

Mbombela United will pay a visit to Vasco da Gama in Cape Town, while Santos will host Mthatha Bucks at the Athlone Stadium in Cape Town next Tuesday, January 12.

Ngove Leeds United beat Gawula United 5-3 to lift the Zama Zama Soccer Challenge trophy at the Giyani Homu 14B grounds last Thursday.

United deserved to win, but their strikers seemed to have forgotten their scoring boots at home. Their dribbling wizard, Ngere Ngoveni, caused an upset in the 9th minute. He received a neat pass from Silence Mabunda and shot wide from the edge of the box with the keeper already beaten.

That was a wake-up call to Gawula United. They started to initiate promising moves from the middle of the park, thus forcing the opponents to play with their backs against the wall. Their efforts paid dividends in the 18th minute. Tsepo Khosa was on target with a header, following a square pass from Steven Ngoveni. Ronny Mavunda of Gawula United was booked for obstructing Aubrey Makwela in the 38th minute.

The second half saw United pressing hard in their search for the equalizer. They came close to scoring in the 54th minute.

Silence Mabunda’s volley missed the target by inches, much to the fans’ disappointment. That, however, did not kill the team’s fi ghting spirit as they fi nally found the equalizer in the 74th minute. They were awarded a free kick in the 25 metre area. Sipho Rikhotso blasted in a rocket from the set piece.

United were reduced to ten men two minutes later. Hlahla Kho-sa was given his marching orders following a second bookable offence. The winner was determined through a penalty shoot-out as the full time score was 1-1. United converted four of their fi ve chances, while Gawula missed three.

United were presented with a cash prize of R20 000, a fl oating trophy, a soccer kit and gold medals during a ceremony shortly after the fi nal. Gawula United received R10 000, a soccer kit and silver medals. The teams that lost in the semi-fi nals, BGNM and Giyani All Stars each received R5 000.

The keeper of Leeds United, Vincent Hlungwani, was the best keeper of the tournament, while Rover Hlungwani of Gawula received the top goal scorer’s award. The player of the tourna-ment award went to Rito Ngoma of Gawula United.

Leeds United win Zama Zama

The prizes for the ladies soccer and masters cat-egories were also dished out during the ceremony. The champions in the ladies category, Nwamitwa Sisters FC, received a cash prize of R3 000, a fl oating trophy, gold medals and a soccer kit. The runners-up, Mninginisi Brave Ladies, took home R2 000, silver medals and a soccer kit. The player of the tournament award was presented to Juliet Kgofelo of Sisters, Mndavazi Mathebula of Brave Ladies received the top goal scorer’s award and Tinyiko Mafanele of Sisters took home the best goalkeeper’s award.
