• Monday Aug 29 storm hits• Tuesday Aug 30 levees break, 80% of New Orleans covered in

water, some parts 20 ft deep!• 50,000 to 100,000 still trapped in New Orleans on rooftops/

shelters• Lots of looting, over 200 police officers quit

• Mandatory Evacuation– Highways packed– Many had no vehicle– Not enough busses

• 45,000 people in Superdome and Convention Center; 52,000 people in Red Cross shelters across the Gulf – No electricity/toilets, few cots– Only had food/water supply for 15,000 people for 3 days! – Some were in the shelter for a week (Sept 4th last people evacuated)– Reports of rape, gang violence, drug dealing, one suicide from the

stands– Roof peeling off Superdome, filling with water
