Course Offering for Attendees National Jazz Workshop
July 7-12, 2013 Winchester, Virginia
Shenandoah University will offer undergraduate and graduate credit in conjunction with the National Jazz Workshop. Up to three credits offered concurrently in three individual courses of one credit each may be earned at the undergraduate or graduate level. This credit may be used for certificate/licensure renewal or applied to degree programs. Students must register and pay for the National Jazz Workshop (www.nationaljazzworkshop.org) unless other arrangements have been agreed upon with the director of the workshop. Shenandoah University is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. In addition, Shenandoah Conservatory is accredited by the National Association of Schools of Music. Course 1
Course Title: Trends and Practices in Jazz Education I Course Number: MUCC 497 NJW (1 undergraduate credit) or MUCC 597 NJW
(1 graduate credit) Course Prerequisites: None Registration Deadline: Monday, July 8, 2013 at 5:00 p.m. EST Cost: $219 Assignments Due: Monday, July 15, 2013 at 5:00 p.m. EST Course Description: A comprehensive jazz workshop designed for all levels of musicians from the student, educator to the professional. Participants will explore jazz pedagogy, arranging, orchestration, jazz history and performance techniques, Introduction to music software such as Finale and Pro Tools. World renowned artists, members of The US Army Blues Jazz Ensemble and other Washington D.C. – based ensembles will perform. Course Objectives: Students will attend and evaluate sessions presented by leaders in the field of jazz performance and education. Graduate students will also describe how the sessions relate to the practice of teaching jazz performance. Course Requirements:
Undergraduate credit: • Students registering for undergraduate credit are required to attend a minimum of fifteen (15) clock hours of events such as sessions, clinics, rehearsals, lectures, professional meetings, or concerts. • Students submit a log showing the date, time, location, title, name of the presenter, panelists, or
2 performers for each event. • Students must obtain a signature from the presenter, presider, or performer at each session. Graduate credit: • Students registering for graduate credits are required to attend a minimum of fifteen (15) clock hours of events such as sessions, clinics, rehearsals, lectures, professional meetings, or concerts. • Students submit a log showing the date, time, location, title, name of the presenter, panelists, or performers for each event. • Students must obtain a signature from the presenter, presider, or performer at each session. • Students submit a reflective assessment paragraph about each session, clinic, rehearsal,
lecture, professional meeting, or concert regarding the application of the information presented/observed to the teaching of jazz. (Note: Students who are not currently teaching should reflect on their perceived
application of the information presented/observed to the teaching of jazz.)

Course Title: Best Practices Document Course Number: MUCC 499 NJW (1 undergraduate credit) or MUCC 599 NJW
(1 graduate credit) Course Prerequisites: Completion of MUCC 498 NJW or MUCC 598 NJW Registration Deadline: Monday, July 8, 2013 at 5:00 p.m. EST Cost: $219 Assignments Due: Monday, July 22, 2013, at 5:00 p.m. EST Course Description: A comprehensive jazz workshop designed for all levels of musicians from the student, educator to the professional. Participants will explore jazz pedagogy, arranging, orchestration, jazz history and performance techniques, Introduction to music software such as Finale and Pro Tools. World renowned artists, members of The US Army Blues Jazz Ensemble and other Washington D.C. – based ensembles will perform. Course Objectives: Students will prepare a formal paper, with citations and bibliography, related to one aspect of best practices in jazz education. Examples could include: •The teaching of swing •Including improvisation studies in the big band rehearsal setting •The use of patterns and exercises in the teaching of jazz improvisation •Dealing with the rhythm section The topic must be approved by the instructor of record. Course Requirements:
Undergraduate credit: Students registering for undergraduate credit will prepare a clear and concise document with minimum length of 10 (ten) pages. See technical details below.
Graduate credit: Students registering for graduate credit will prepare a clear and concise document with minimum length of 15 (fifteen) pages. See technical details below.
Technical Considerations
Preparing assignments: • All work must be submitted Word format using Times New Roman, 12 pt font. • Consistency in style is expected in documentation, references, citations or annotation of sources. The American Psychological Association (APA) Manual of Style (6th Edition) is the preferred format. • Header for each assignment should include students name, date, and subject title. 4 Assignment Deadlines: Deadlines are published with each course. Students are expected to submit work according to these deadlines. Assignments more than one week late will not be accepted. Incompletes are not awarded without documentation of serious extenuating circumstances. Academic Dishonesty Academic dishonesty in any form, including plagiarism and giving or receiving unauthorized assistance in academic work, is prohibited.
