(1 graduate credit) Course Prerequisites: Completion of MUCC 498 NJW or MUCC 598 NJW Registration Deadline: Monday, July 8, 2013 at 5:00 p.m. EST Cost: $219 Assignments Due: Monday, July 22, 2013, at 5:00 p.m. EST Course Description: A comprehensive jazz workshop designed for all levels of musicians from the student, educator to the professional. Participants will explore jazz pedagogy, arranging, orchestration, jazz history and performance techniques, Introduction to music software such as Finale and Pro Tools. World renowned artists, members of The US Army Blues Jazz Ensemble and other Washington D.C. – based ensembles will perform. Course Objectives: Students will prepare a formal paper, with citations and bibliography, related to one aspect of best practices in jazz education. Examples could include: •The teaching of swing •Including improvisation studies in the big band rehearsal setting •The use of patterns and exercises in the teaching of jazz improvisation •Dealing with the rhythm section The topic must be approved by the instructor of record. Course Requirements:

Undergraduate credit: Students registering for undergraduate credit will prepare a clear and concise document with minimum length of 10 (ten) pages. See technical details below.

Graduate credit: Students registering for graduate credit will prepare a clear and concise document with minimum length of 15 (fifteen) pages. See technical details below.

Technical Considerations

Preparing assignments: • All work must be submitted Word format using Times New Roman, 12 pt font. • Consistency in style is expected in documentation, references, citations or annotation of sources. The American Psychological Association (APA) Manual of Style (6th Edition) is the preferred format. • Header for each assignment should include students name, date, and subject title. Incompletes are not awarded without documentation of serious extenuating circumstances.
