Try Deli erative Pra ti e

Teach interactively instead of lecturing! Try quizzing

students on their knowledge of a subject before

teaching them about it, allowing them to reason

out answers in small groups. Then go over their

knowledge or misconceptions in a class discussion.

-A study at the University of British Columbia using

this technique found that students did twice as well

as their counterparts in a traditional classroom, and

atte da e i reased 20%

Or, Try a Flipped Classroom

-If technologically feasible, have students watch the lesson at home, the night before. Then,

the a o e i to lass a d do ho e ork ti e ith the instructor, which allows for one-on-

one tutoring.

-Students can decide how quickly they want to watch the lecture, how many they watch at

o e, a d the o ’t iss i for atio if the are si k or i jured. -One-on-one instruction is most effective to help ea h stude t’s parti ular eeds, a d o the teacher has time to address them.

Encourage Communication

This is important! In order to reach students, you have to be

able to communicate with them, and also have them

communicate with each other.

-Listen to student responses and concerns.

-Ask open-ended questions, and the follow-up questions.

-Allow plenty of time after a question for students to think

through the problem.

-Create situatio s that halle ge stude t’s pre o ei ed notions and allow them to discuss their ideas.

Use Cooperative Learning

Students work in teams to create a final product.

-Students taught using cooperative learning tend to

exhibit higher scores, better understanding of

material, better social skills, and better creative,

analytical, and critical thinking skills.

-Group projects can be tricky –start small and build

from there. Make sure every student has a role and is

held accountable.

Ditch the Bubble Tests

Unless mandated, use alternative forms of student

assessment, like free response or cumulative projects.

-“tude ts ill feel less like just a u er , a d ore involved in their learning.

Make It Applicable to Real Life

Use hands-on, real-world projects to teach essential

principles. Have students to build a water wheel to learn

about engineering or plant a garden to learn about biology.

These projects can easily encompass more than one subject!

-Project-base learning improves retention and social skills, and

reduces absenteeism and disciplinary problems.

Change Your Teaching Style for Different Learning Styles

Find out what learning style bests suits each of your

students (verbal, logical, visual, bodily, musical, etc), then

try a lesson taught for that manner of learning.

-For example, a song and dance to learn English

prepositions, which engages musical, bodily, and verbal

learners.

NO MATTER WHAT YOU TRY, REMEMBER THAT

YOUR GOAL IS TO HELP STUDENTS SUCCEED!
