STATE LEAGUE

GRAND FINAL PREVIEW

.

1989

The North Shore club have the chance to make history - with all three grade teams in the Grand Finals today.

Twenty years ago East Sydney won all three flags and that feat has never been repeated - perhaps until today?

What can you say about Campbelltown, the best team all season, and here where they should be playing for yet another pennant. Campbelltown are, of course, the reigning premiers. Solid, unrelenting teamwork was a prime reason for the Blues second Semi Final win over North Shore a fortnight ago. This win reversed the Blues only loss all season - at the hands of North Shore by 56 points.

Today at full strength Campbelltown will be keen to make it four flags on the trot, a handsome tribute to their Captain/Coach Russell Matheson who has announced his retirement after this game.

Brothers Steve and Geoff Noack, more brothers Steve and Rod Podbury, the elusive Brian Kershaw, the redoubtable Jamie Mclaughlin, sharpshooter Tim McMenamin plus Captain/Coach Russell Matheson will be the backbone of Campbelltowns drive for todays flag.

North Shore made two changes after their second semi loss - came out and won last weeks Preliminary Final to have another shot at old foes Campbelltown today. Shore Coach Tony Smith has used his defence line up as the launching pad for victory - proof of which is the Black and Reds eight wins out of their last nine games.

Former amateur player, Tony Loton, a couple of Tasmanians Anthony Smyth and Chris Neville plus the tough Gerard Dignan lead Shores defence springboard. Shore unveiled another top forward a fortnight ago when former young defender Julien Doyle held the full forward spot kicking four goals while Peter Robertson, Shores top forward, kicked eight.

RESERVE GRADE St George had a relatively easy 33 point win over North Shore in the Second Semi Final to take their

rightful place in todays Grand Final. On form they must be the favourites to claim the 1989 Reserves Pennant.

North Shore won their way to todays Grand Final after defeating East Sydney in last Sunday's Preliminary Final. As the reigning Reserve Grade Premiers Shore will have more than sufficient pride to make todays Final memorable.

UNDER19'S North Shore Under 19 Bear Cubs are playing in their fourth Grand Final in a row. Shore defeated

Baulkham Hills in the second Semi Final continuing their unbeaten run this season to win the right for their place in todays Grand Final. In the past 11 seasons Shore have made Under 19 Premierships a habit-winning no less than eight of them.

St George one of the two top Under 19 Clubs in the past 20 years were runners up last year - and are looking to go one better this year after defeating newcomers Baulkham Hills last week.

UMPIRES It's called Super Rules and has attracted a ; lot of well known names from Sydney Foot· .

Three cameras were used by the ball. umpires chief to video the Preliminary Final last week - one for play - one for umpires and one for special segments.

David Levens, State Director of Umpiring, organised the show through the KVB College - TV & Film Production Course Students. An innovative idea that deserves success - with the television as both entertainment and a teaching tool.

TV or not last Sunday we saw the best side (photographically) of the umpires.

Never done in NSW before according to Mr Levens - the ability to sit down and analyse all aspects of umpiring, central, goal and boundary, through the trhee cameras.

CRYSTAL BALL Fitzroy aficionado Tim Johnson has a crystal

ball. half time in the Reserve Grade Preliminary Final he predicted North Shore to win the match, and they did.

The crystal ball bit is that Shore were 5 goals down at that time and defending against, what had been, a 1 O goal breeze.

St George Coach Steve Taubert and exSwan and other clubs Craig Davis are playing, also Ian Allen (Easts), Rod Hooke1 i and Ron McFadgen (Newtown), Ian SharpE (Shore), Peter Ord (Shore and elsewhere) all play Super Rules.

Former Manly Warrlngah President Greg Durbrldge plays but ex North Shore player '. Stan McCloud will be missing this year as will Pennant Hills stalwart Gus McKernan. Also Pennant Hills player Maurie Gale will be playing.

There Is an Interstate Carnival for a week Ir Canbe.rra after the long weekend where these follows will show their skills still.

RUSSELL MATHESON INVENTOR OF THE PREMIERSHIP MACHINE

1989

Triple Premiership Coach Russell Matheson is just as keen to win the flag in 1989 as he was when he launched his coaching career with the Blues back in 1984. The 1989 State Selector and assistant to the State League Representative Side, 'Boxer' as he is known in the West, Is the master of preparing a side to peak for the big one.

Russell is extremely pleased to have about 15 players in todays line up with Grand Final experience and of cours.e all of the Blues have competed in at least one finals match courtesy of their late '80's success.

The Coach expects it's on field leaders in Brian Kershaw, Jamie Mclaughlin, Rod Podbury, Geoff Reid, full forward Dale Bocabella and the Noack Brothers to all exert a positive Influence on the game. A significant effort should be forthcoming from adaptable Bill Darnell in his last game for the Club as he heads West in a few days to take up residence in Perth.

Although Russell respects all of the North Shore line up, he expects Tony Smith, Peter Robertson, Peter Quirk and David Querzoli all to be difficult opponents.

The Blues have had a light week in preparation for the big one, concentrating on skills and discussing their successful team plan and the need to adhere to it.

The Coach also recognised the magnificent support of the Campbelltown Council who will show their pride in the City's most successful team in 1990 with support for a new building and facilities at Football Park, and who in fact have given great encouragement for many years.

All in all the Blues are hungry for success, with a blending of experienced veterans who have been there before and know what is required, and young keen newcomers champing at the bit for Premiership glory.

TONY SMITH - THE LEADER OF THE BEARS PACK

Former Sydney Swans and young coaching debutante Tony Smith today leads his charges onto the hallowed turf of Erskineville Oval In his first year as Senior Coach. Tony's impact both as a player and as coach has been significant in a club that is relentless in its search for September glory.

Tony Is well supported by a mature and educated playing staff that Includes only five players not to play in a senior Grand Final and all of the five are products of the Club's junior Premiership assembly line.

The Bears Coach is loath to cite individuals within his team as having a major Influence, suggesting that with the possible exception of centurion forward Peter Robertson, the side consists of players who are triers, adaptable and mature in their approach.

Smith certainly respects the Campbelltown team, highlighting triple Phelan Medalist Rod Podbury as the vital cog In the Blues armory, suggesting that if Podbury fires so too does the entire outfit.

The Ruckman/Coach has included a movie and breakfast before the game to the normal North Shore routine, indicating that the side came out of its Preliminary Final encounter with St George Injury free and ready to go.

With the commencement of construction on the new changeroom and club house building at Gore Hill and the upgrading of the oval, the Bears face the 1990's with a great deal of excitement. Today's First Grade result, with the chance of triple honours, could be the launching pad for a bright and successful future for this proud club.

If anyone is to lead the Bears to such glory It must surely be Tony Smith and his charges today.

DAVO'S DEVELOP1\1ENT DIARY

The ultimate dream of every player and coach is to participate in a.finals series and ultimately go on to be premiers.

At the start of each season the aim and objective is to win enough matches to make the finals. The Home and Away Series is onl; the formalities, but still a battle. The Finals Series is a completely separate struggle. The big difference between the two being the relative importance of your teams ladder position.

The closer to the top the greater the advantage. The top sides only have to win 1 game of 2 to play off in the Grand Final, and as we all know the top two have an easier road to hoe than the bottom two.

With all the knocks and bruises resulting from the previous finals its a long haul unless you gain the advantage, as the top side, to a weeks rest.

For clubs anticipating a place in the finals, September is the time when a noticeable change of attitude takes place within players and staff at a club. As the weather· improves so does the morale at training and tempo on the track. Players arrive earlier as they sense the chance to play in the big one.

Experienced sides at this stage endeavour to learn from past experience and take remedial action to overcome deficiencies which may have let them down in the past.

Once the dye is cast with your team its up to the players and no one else.

After the match, obviously we have a winner and a loser, success needs no explanation, unfortunately, failure will not accept any alibi.

In the heat of the moment be gracious in defeat and humble in victory. Don't give . blame if you lose at the time. In the clean light of day look at what went wrong,

find the reason rather than making excuses so that you can take ste;is for next year.

One of those steps could be to attend the Level I Coaching Course at the Collaroy Youth and Community Centre on February 16, 17 and 18, 1990. Contact me on 332 3791.

N.B. I see no point in criticizing the players as I don't know one who wouldn't give it his best shot in a Grand Final.
