Table of ContentsHall of Fame shatters glass ceiling with eighth inductee

Our 2013 edition of 101 One Hundred & Business Hall of Fame breaks new ground as we induct Sara Miller McCune as the eighth member of our Business Hall of Fame.

We’re delighted that the owner and chair of Sage Publications will be the first woman in the hall of fame.

As a business owner, entrepre-neur and philanthropist, Miller McCune personally exemplifies the community-oriented culture of business in our region. For those of you who are new to our publica-tion, Pacific Coast Business Times created the 101 One Hundred in 2002 as a way of recognizing the top public and privately-owned companies along our Highway 101 corridor.

In 2010, in honor of the Business Times’ 10th anniversary, we launched the Business Hall of Fame for the Ventura, Santa Barbara and San Luis Obispo county region. We have established a tradition of inducting one per-son into the hall of fame each year.

In addition to being the first woman in the hall of fame, Miller McCune is a major donor to Cottage Hospital in Santa Barbara and to arts organizations, notably the Grana-da Theatre. You can read Senior Editor Ste-phen Nellis’ profile of her on pages 14-15B.

Last year, we were privileged to induct Hank Lacayo, our first Latino member. He joined Peter Jordano, Jeff Henley, Carrol Pruett, Michael Towbes and the late Mar-tin V. Smith. We’re sad to report that one of our original members, Jack Gilbert, passed

away last year. He was a true believer in the power of capital markets and free enterprise as well as a major donor to California Lu-theran University.

The 101 One Hundred is the region’s only comprehensive look at major public and

private companies. It represents an enormous research effort and is an invaluable tool for investors, sup-pliers, financial services firms and professionals seeking employment. Included are:

• Public Companies: We ranked the top 30 public companies in the Tri-Counties based on market capi-talization. We also provide addi-tional performance metrics for in-

vestors. • Private Companies: We rank the top

50 private companies based on 2012 revenue figures. We continue to discover new com-panies every year and this year we derived some information from Privco, a New York-based data firm that contributed to research on a few firms.

• Companies to Watch: This list includes 20 firms that have substantial growth pros-pects because they have raised significant venture capital or have proprietary products that have national or global potential.

From the 100 companies on our list, our editorial team selects a number of compa-nies from each category for recognition as companies of the year. Among public com-panies this year, we’re taking an in-depth look at CalAmp, Ryland Group agribusiness

giant Dole Food Co. Our private companies include Hi-Temp Insulation, Global Power Supply and Santa Barbara Hotel Group. Our companies to watch include Shopatron and The Trade Desk.

The 101 One Hundred represents a huge staff effort. Special Reports Editor/Research Director Dara Barney worked tirelessly on the section. Managing Editor Marlize van Romburgh assisted with number crunching and design.

Staff writers Stephen Nellis and Dana Olsen contributed stories. Nellis researched our Companies to Watch list. Advertising Graphic Artist Elizabeth Nadel designed the wonderful cover. The cover photo was taken by Jeff Clark.

101 One Hundred would not be possible without the support of our sponsors. This

year we have our first-ever Diamond Spon-sor, Tolman & Wiker Insurance Services (formerly known as TWIW). Our gold spon-sors are Bartlett Pringle & Wolf, Brownstein Hyatt Farber & Schreck, Cal Lutheran Uni-versity and Union Bank. Our silver sponsors are Cal State University Channel Islands, BLAZE and TOLD Corporation.

I hope you will join us on Tuesday, May 14 at the Four Seasons Resort The Biltmore Santa Barbara as we recognize these won-derful companies and celebrate the corpo-rate and community leadership of Miller McCune. Contact Jennifer Hemmy at (805) 560-6950 ext. 228 for tickets and more in-formation.
