4-Jan-10 Hadrian's Wall Country / Cumbria Romantic couples are being encouraged to follow in the footsteps of literary giant, Sir Walter Scott, and propose to their loved-one at the ‘Popping-Stone’ in Hadrian’s Wall Country this Valentine’s Day.

The ‘Popping-Stone’ is a group of three naturally rounded sandstone boulders located in the Irthing Gorge, near Gilsland in Cumbria, where Sir Walter Scott is said to have ‘popped’ the question of marriage to his future wife, Margaret Carpenter, in 1797.

The ‘Popping-Stone’ lies within the extensive grounds of the Gilsland Spa Hotel on the bank of the River Irthing between Cumbria and Northumberland, and is only a stone’s throw from Hadrian’s Wall itself. The secluded site can be visited as part of a romantic riverside walk through the woods.

The 18th century Scottish novelist and poet’s most famous titles include Ivanhoe, Rob Roy, The Lady of The Lake, Waverley, The Heart of Midlothian and The Bride of Lammermoor. In some ways, Scott was the first English-language author to have a truly international career in his lifetime, with many contemporary readers all over Europe, Australia, and North America.

With miles of breathtaking countryside to explore, and a choice of luxury hotels or cosy cottages with log fires to curl up by, couples are certain to find room for romance in Hadrian’s Wall Country this Valentine’s Day.

Planning a romantic Valentine’s break in Hadrian’s Wall Country couldn’t be easier, thanks to the official Hadrian’s Wall Country website - www.hadrians-wall.org – which is full of great value ideas on what to see and do.

4-Jan-10 The Taj Mahal, spread over 42 acres on the banks of river Yamuna in Agra, India.

The Taj Mahal is an architectural masterpiece commissioned by Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan as a mausoleum for his favourite wife Empress Mumtaz Mahal, who died in 1631. Shah Jahan’s love for his wife was so great that he ordered the building of the most beautiful mausoleum on Earth for her. Known particularly for its symmetry, the Taj Mahal sits on a raised platform surrounded by four minarets. Inside the building are delicate mosaic works and marble walls decorated with intricate patterns of inlaid precious stones and caligraphy. Some say that the white marble of the Taj seems to glow in the light of the full moon, while on a foggy morning, visitors experience the Taj as if suspended when viewed from across the Yamuna river.

4-Jan-10 Lover, Wiltshire (pronounced like Dover), UK. It's near Salisbury

Nothing massive makes it romantic just the name of the village.

Sadly the local post office is now closed as it was once a great place to send Valentine's Day cards from as it would be stamped with Lover.

All the same it's a nice place for a romantic break.

One of the closest hotels is the Three Lions Inn at Stuckton, where facilities include a sauna and spa pool. www.thethreelionsrestaurant.co.uk

4-Jan-10 CORSICACouples seeking character properties in a historical and romantic setting should consider Calvi Citadel in North West Corsica.Calvi fulfils the image of the perfect ‘picture postcard’ Mediterranean: a colourful array of buildings and a pine fringed crescent of silver sand beach stretching as far as the eye can see. All of this is crowned by cobbled streets climbing up to the town’s main attraction, its Genoese Citadel.

CORSICAReferred to as ‘Kalliste’, meaning ‘most beautiful’ by the Greeks, Corsica has always possessed an exclusive reputation, long having been the choice of the world’s rich and famous: Prince Rainer of Monaco brought his bride, Princess Grace, to Calvi for their honeymoon, as did Richard Burton when he married Elizabeth Taylor. The diversity of Corsica adds to its romantic appeal: stunning beaches and breathtaking mountainous scenery contrast perfectly with old-fashioned rural hamlets, the seaside, or more bustling, modern towns.

4-Jan-10 Oxford, England How can Oxford not be romantic, its elegant spires still 'dreaming', its rivers still lapping ancient college and garden walls. Here many a young thing met his/her beloved and danced the night away at a midsummer ball. Or punted them stylishly down river (once they'd learned how not to tangle them up in the hawthorn bushes or get the pole stuck in the mud). They would pack the punt with goodies from the deli, take string to dangle to bottle of champers from the stern, and wear short sleeves 9to avoid drips) and a stout hat agin the midges. OIpportunities for kissing still abound - mistletoe clusters in trees on chrich church meadow, on Addison's walk and in the Botanic Garden (said to have been founded by a murdere but we won't talk about that...)

6-Jan-10 The tropical island of Príncipe is a virtually undiscovered paradise in the Atlantic Ocean, close to Gabon. It’s a place where dense rainforests teem with exotic birds, where whales sport playfully off unspoiled, deserted beaches, where crystal-clear waterfalls cascade into the azure blue ocean, and where the people are, above all, friendly and happy to meet you. In short, Príncipe is a sensational place to relax, dive, fish or turn adventurous.

Together with the island of São Tomé, Príncipe forms one of the smallest independent nations in the world, located some 220 kilometres off the western equatorial coast of Africa. Príncipe’s extraordinary landscape, an irregular scattering of soaring volcanic peaks, is 70% covered by primary forest where up to 20% of trees, orchids and birds are said to be endemic. It has still been barely touched by the island’s 5,000 inhabitants or the outside world.

On the northern shore of Príncipe lies the exclusive Bom Bom Island Resort, offering luxurious accommodation in staggeringly beautiful natural surroundings. A truly extraordinary destination for the passionate traveller, this island is only 7 hours from Europe.

What makes Principe / Bom Bom especially romantic:- The setting as described above- The deserted beaches: the island of Príncipe has barely been discovered by the world, with the splendid result that you are often alone on palm-fringed beaches- The delicious food and friendly staff: the cook serves Indian and local delicacies, not to forget the fresh seafood platters! - The activities: snorkeling, diving, walking/hiking, kayakking, quad-biking, cultural / city tours, birding

What others have to say about Príncipe / Bom Bom Island Resort:

Bradt Travel Guide: "This 4-star resort is truly a slice of paradise. A very photogenic wooden walkway connects Bom Bom Island (holding the restaurant, bar & marina) with the bungalows/pool area on the mainland. Accommodation is in spacious individual chalets (recently refurbished) directly on the beach or built into the rock."

Rob Floor from the Netherlands, travelled to Príncipe in November 2009: "When we heard that we had to return one day earlier than planned because of a change in the plane schedule, we were really disappointed. That shows how much we enjoyed staying in this small tropical paradise (it truly is paradise!). Amidst the lush green rainforest and with its deserted beaches, Príncipe makes you feel like Robinson Crusoe. We were often the only couple on the beaches of Bom Bo

A brief history of São Tomé & Principe:

The islands were first discovered by Portuguese navigators between 1469 and 1472. The first successful settlement of São Tomé was established in 1493 by Alvaro Caminha, who received the land as a grant from the Portuguese crown. Principe was settled in 15

Sugar cultivation declined over the next 100 years, and by the mid-1600s, São Tomé was little more than a port of call for bunkering ships. In the early 1800s, two new cash crops, coffee and cocoa, were introduced. The rich volcanic soils proved well suit

By the late 1950s, when other emerging nations across the African Continent were demanding independence, a small group of São Toméans had formed the Movement for the Liberation of São Tomé and Principe (MLSTP), which eventually established its base in nea

A Fairy Trail stay From Ranch Rider (Bridger, Montana, US)

If you’re a fan of the “Horse Whisperer” and you’re looking to be whisked away by your very own cowboy, then head to the Lonesome Spur Working Ranch in Montana. Author Nicholas Evans completed his research for the best selling novel at the very same homestead, owner Lonnie Schwend acting as his guide.

Situated in a truly romantic location, the ranch is set in the shadows of the Pryor and Beartooth Mountains, the Yellowstone River running through the property.

Lonnie Schwend, comments: “Nicholas Evans wanted to come here and touch the grass, feel the wind and smell the flowers…he wanted to see Western life as it really is and that’s what our guests, many of whom are still inspired by the book, are looking for too.”

Not simply romantic fiction, Lonnie’s wife Elaine Schwend was also moved by Evans' novel, the pair finally marrying on horseback.

Remote and intimate, the ranch takes only ten guests, all of the western themed rooms featuring private decks. Couples can participate in horsemanship classes, take a dip in the hot tub or round off the day’s ranch chores with a soothing aromatherapy massage in a real Native American tepee.

This getting-away-from-it-all remote family owned and managed eco-retreat operates on land whose ancestors have called the region home of Adam and Eve.

A colonial homestead as central lodge, the décor is simple and elegant; polished concrete floors with bush colour schemes and stylish decorative touches. With floor-to-ceiling tented flaps in the front and back, guests are immersed in the smells, sights and sounds of the African bush. Each tented unit has its own private verandah with minibar, and bathroom consisting of a ball-and claw bath, his-and her basin, toilet and detached outdoor bush shower. Upmarket feel and high quality and very romantic at Valentines or any other time of the year.

Rickety Bridge is an absolutely beautiful setting. It is an exclusive, boutique wine estate dating back to 1797. Part of the romance is crossing a small bridge over a river and entering the property, seeing the vineyards, mountains and historic buildings spread out before you. As you drive towards the bridge, it is not possible to see what is on the other side because of a dense tree line along the river. Rickety Bridge is a lesser known wine estate and is only 50 hectares big, making it small and private. Guests stay in a restored 3 bedroom manor house dating back to 1830. Guests can order a picnic and enjoy it on a blanket under the trees on the manor house lawn taking in the splendid vineyard and mountain views.
