Message from Membership
2014 was another great year for membership growth, as we have added 51 new members to date, and earned $207,000 in initiation fees. Initiation fees from all new members go directly into our
capital fund which helps to keep our Clubhouse & grounds in tip top shape.
Recently I was doing some Woodlands membership data mining and I thought I would share a little with you. Did you know that our average age of member is 53? Our youngest member is 26 and
our oldest member is 91. There are 595 spouses who belong to The Woodlands and 1,049 children under the age of 26.
In this month’s newsletter, I’ve included some of the fun photos of our September Safari Night. More fun and festive photos are located on the club’s website in the Safari photo album.
We are in the process of planning the Club’s 2015 Social Calendar. If you have any suggestions for
events, please send them to me at [email protected].
Please join me in welcoming our newest Woodlands Club Members, Stephanie & Carll Wilkinson.
Looking forward to seeing you around the Club,
Mary Anne
From the General Manager Our Clubhouse is just a shade over 26 years old, and like all 26 year old buildings there is always
something to be replaced, repaired or updated. That is especially true of a facility that gets used as
much as ours. Management, in collaboration with the Clubhouse Committee and the Board (under the
direction of President Mark Fasold), has sharpened its focus on those areas of the Club that were
looking particularly tired or in need of repair. This is a never-ending process, and each of you may
immediately think of examples you would like to see addressed. Don’t think for a moment that we
don’t see the same things, but understand that there will always be more wants and needs than
available funds. Some examples of recent, ongoing and soon to be addressed projects include, in no
particular order: replacement of all of the seat coverings in the adult side of the member dining room,
replacement of the member dining table tops, overhaul of the front steps to the main entrance of the
Clubhouse, replacement of carpeting in the Fitness facility, repair and replacement of wood on the
stairs leading up to the patio from outside the golf shop, installation of pavers on the side of the snack
shack facing the golf course, and the replacement of our crumbling water main. Additional planned
projects include an update to the main lobby and a multi-phase upgrade of our ballroom beginning in
2015.
While the end of the golf season is, unfortunately, right around the corner, there is still plenty to do at The Woodlands Club during
the long winter season. For you non-tennis playing members, I have a question. Have you ever given any thought to trying it, or
resurrecting your game if you used to play but no longer do? We have easily one of the best indoor tennis facilities in all of New
England. I can think of several members I have spoken to in recent years who have embraced or re-embraced tennis and have had a
blast. Along those lines, we all know what a great workout swimming is. Beth and Sheilla have a lengthy track record of taking
members who can barely swim down and back and turning them into accomplished swimmers who achieve goals that leave me
envious. In fact, on that front, I should take my own advice and give it a try! Oh, and another winter pursuit that is perfectly
acceptable is to simply gather with friends and family in the dining room and lounge for great food, beverages and music.
This month will bring the end of this work in 2014 on the irrigation replacement project. The Tanto crew members are here on
work visas, and they are required to leave by Thanksgiving. As I write this, we are in the midst of our worst weather week in a long
time, but if it turns and we get another decent stretch they will come close to completing the golf course this year. Regardless,
there won’t be a lot to finish up in 2015. As I have said repeatedly, we couldn’t be any happier with how this project has gone. It has
truly exceeded our expectations, and by a wide margin. Until next month, we will see you around the Club.

4TH ANNUAL
FAMILY & INDIVIDUAL
WINTER SWIM CHALLENGE November 1-February 28
Cost: Free!
Register by phone (781-3104 ext.112) or via e-mail to [email protected]
Welcome to our 4th Annual Winter Swim Challenge! Once again we will be offering
the Family Challenge category and the 100 Mile distance as well as maintaining
our traditional 20 & 50 Mile challenge format. Starting November 1 and
continuing through February, we will be running a FUN 4 month self-recording
distance swim program for the average and slightly above average swimmer. We
have selected 20, 50, and 100 Mile swim distances that can be achieved in three to
four months depending on distance and level of commitment. You can even miss a
week or two and finish on time. If you have never done much swimming but know
how to swim, this will be a nice way to surprise yourself with how much you can
accomplish. The other benefit is that when mid-February comes, you’ll be all ready
for that warm winter vacation. The distance challenge is all about achieving
the distance so you can swim any stroke, use fins or even just kick or pull to
achieve your goal. It doesn’t matter if you finish first, last or somewhere in between.
All finishes are equally important! Along the way, fun little prizes will be awarded to
those who meet their monthly targets. The aquatics staff will support you, so give us
guidance about what you’d like… maybe some fun sets, maybe some technique
drills… maybe just be left alone. Registrants who complete the challenge will receive
prizes.
FAMILY 20, 50, or 100 MILE Swim Challenge
All family members compile their distances to contribute to the total.
Husbands and wives make a great team too!
Encourage other families to join your family in the swim challenge.
20 MILE Swim Challenge (35,200 yards total)
This is a Pro-Active Winter/Holiday swim challenge for the average person.
Swim 108 lengths of the pool each week (2700 yards/week) and rack up
6 miles/month.
Choose your schedule distance:
For example:
3 times/week = 36 lengths each visit
2 times = 54
1 = 108 OR you can swim more some weeks than others
50 MILE Swim Challenge (88,000 yards total)
For the more experienced swimmer
Swim 6,300 yards per week
100 MILE Swim Challenge (176,000 yards total)
For the more experienced swimmer
Swim 12,600 yards per week

suggestions, we would be happy gladly hear them.
The new rates will be:
30 Minutes: $30.00
45 Minutes: $39.00

Golf
From the Director of Golf
If you haven’t tried the golf simulator yet, it is really great! It is a radar based system that
calculates launch angle, distance, club and ball speed and spin rates while providing instant
feedback. It doubles as one of the most precise club fitting tools available today. This is definitely
not your father’s golf simulator!
When taking Golf lessons in the simulator, you will be able to see not just the specifics
mentioned above, but the path of your swing as well. It’s so much easier to improve with tangible
feedback.
It’s hard to believe you can play Pebble Beach without leaving Maine. The simulator is very easy to use and is incredibly
accurate. The practice range feature offers a ton of useful feedback and provides easy to read graphics. As an alternative,
the indoor practice net will remain available and is located along with the simulator in the bag storage room (off the
fitness entry alcove). You may enter through the door located in the fitness alcove during normal club hours. Just follow
the signs.
Both the low tech (free) net and the high tech (fee) simulator are available on a first come, first served basis. There are no
“tee times” for the net. Reserve the simulator by going to the golf page on the club’s website and follow the directions.
It’s easy.
Please remember, in order to make this program successful, we are relying on your adherence to the honor system. The
golf committee is tracking how the simulator is used. Please check off the box (play golf or range) when using the simulator.
You must bring your own golf clubs or make arrangements to borrow clubs from the golf staff in advance.
BE SAFE– LOOK BEFORE YOU SWING-MAKE SURE THE AREA IS CLEAR! Have fun!

A November Golf Tip? Brr…
Although no one knows what Mother Nature will bring for
November, it can be a great time to play. The trick to playing in
cool weather is...DO WHATEVER YOU HAVE TO DO TO
KEEP YOUR HANDS WARM!
Here are a few ideas to make chilly weather golf more fun:
• Don’t start a round cold because you’ll never get warm. Dress
warmly ahead of time. You can always shed a layer of clothing.
• Walking is warmer than taking a cart.
• Avoid injury, warm up. Walk briskly from the parking lot to
the golf shop. It gets the blood flowing. Don’t forget to stretch.
• The ball does not travel as far in cold weather. You will lose
about two yards for every ten degree decrease in temperature.
More if the ball is cold as well. Take one more club on a 50
degree day.
• With additional layers of clothing it is important to note that
your shoulder turn may be restricted. If I am at a distance
where I normally hit 7 iron, I may choke down and inch or two
on a 5 iron. My focus is on solid contact.
Thank you all for your support this season. I hope you enjoyed
the season as much as we did.

From the Director of Tennis
You can get a PhD in sport psychology these
days, but nothing is more fundamental to
mental toughness and your game than
watching the ball into the strings, and you
don’t need a degree to become an expert. Bad
eye contact falls under the mental part of the
game because anxiety and rushing the stroke are what takes a
player’s eyes off the ball. We can’t, as players, eliminate the anxiety,
but we can, most certainly, learn to keep our strokes together in
the face of it. Our pros and I have been discussing this issue lately
and we want to help you. Stop in, give us a call, shoot us an email,
or join a clinic and we can help you specifically with how to “watch
the ball”.
