The 116th Panzer Division was another victim of the Falaise Pocket, being essentially destroyed in
that battle. The division was rebuilt and fought in the battle for Aachen after which it was pulled out of
the line and rebuilt for the Ardennes offensive. The 116th had early success against the 28th Infantry
but was caught in a traffic jam caused by several blown bridges and finally stalled at Hotton. In mid-
January, the 116th covered the withdrawal of the forward German survivors, just escaping the cutting off
of the bulge by the 2nd and 11th U.S Armored Divisions. Like most of the Panzer divisions involved in
the Ardennes Offensive, the 116th was never built up to full strength again after this battle.
