It’s time for a little bragging.And I don’t mind telling you

that it’s for one of our advertis-ers. Without them all, we couldnot offer this magazine to youfree of charge.

So, thank you – to all who haveadvertised and continue to do so –for your support! It’s been our priv-ilege this past year to introduceyour talents and services to readers.

But, it was MIB Remodeling(www.mibremodeling.com) thatsent in Before and After photosof a bathroom they did for aclient. Since it is our annualkitchen and bath planning issue, Iwanted to applaud their effortson a job well done.

“They have told us we made it beautiful,” says Mike Scott, owner of MIB.

The clients evidently met with MIB during the Cypress Home Show.Mike asked them questions but also listened to their needs and wants. His listening skills won him the job. He then worked with the client todesign a workable and affordable plan.

The clients said MIB worked within their budget to give them amplestorage and a new shower, which replaced an old tub.

A quick review of past client comments reveal that MIB certainly hasa fan base. Written praise runs the gamut . . . that MIB is not only “agreat company to work with,” but that they are “there from the begin-ning of a project until its completion.” Others appreciated daily or regu-lar progress reports.

Instead of showcasing entire homes this issue, we are running a fea-ture of three types of kitchens, and a reveal of three different bath-rooms. Kitchen and bath guru Peggy McGowen also shares tips to con-sider and use. Peggy, I might add, joins us as a regular columnist nextyear . . . so excited about that!

Happy holidays to you all,Susan

SAY ING GOODBYE AND THANK YOU TO A FAVORITE COLUMNISTTHE BEST OF JOETTA

Joetta Moulden's mantra when it comes to home interiorsis redesign, reuse, recycle, redo and reinvent.

“You would be surprised at what another set of eyes can do. Wecan transform a room – with little or no cost,” says Moulden.

After 15 years of writing a column, Before & After, for HoustonHouse & Home, Moulden is stepping down to focus more on herbusiness and clients. But for 30 years she has helped Houstonianschange their surroundings by suggesting simple alterations and mod-ifications.

The native Houstonian says that as a teenager she would go tofriends’ homes and rearrange the furniture in their rooms. Becauseher father was an architect and she lived in several “lovely” homes inthe city, she was introduced early to form and fashion.

After attending the University of Houston and working as a busi-ness writer and editor for the Chamber of Commerce and later anin-house publication for Houston Lighting & Power, she realizedher real passion was her creative side of transforming spaces. Shebegan writing for a variety of local and national shelter magazinesand then in 2000, she launched her business “Shelter Style.” Shealso began the column for this magazine of showing readers howsimple changes in a room make enormous differences in the lookand use of a space.

“I can walk into a room and see it finished,” she says, addingthat an inexpensive investment like a can of paint sometimes canchange a room and the personality of a home.

She says she often walks into a room – for example a livingroom – and suggests moving the couch, repositioning chairs, rear-ranging art and repainting the walls. In a few hours, at almost nocost, the owners feel like they are in a new space.

“A lot depends on the person and how open they are tochange,” she says. “It is a fine line that I have to walk.”

She prefers to work in the client’s home and in the space thatis to be redone.

“I don’t do well in blank spaces. I do better in furnished spacesbecause I can see what needs to be done easier in the furnishedroom,” she explains. “I can recommend adjustments that shouldbe made and help them to transform the space.”

“Because I believe strongly in reusing what is already there,I sometimes save my clients more than I cost them (for myservices).”

Her specialty areas are kitchens and bathrooms (“They turn meon!”), but she has assisted clients in redoing living rooms, diningrooms, kids rooms, master bedrooms, studies as well as outdoorspaces. She also works with Realtors in staging homes for resale.

Back in February, 2001, Joetta contributed the story titled “From Clinical to Cozy.” In the article, Joetta wrote, “This bathroom had been ‘modernized’ by a previous owner— the room was stripped of its wood moldings, fixtures and built-in storage, but mainly was stripped of its charm. Now this bathroom invites lingering.”

ABOVE: A reader favorite proj-ect by Joetta from the May,2006 issue of House & Home.Titled “Clean Sweep,” it fea-tured Houston Public Relationsmaven Paula Murphy’srevamped kitchen in her1920s era bungalow. In thearticle, Joetta wrote, “knowingPaula’s available funds, I knewthat her desire for black gran-ite counters would not onlybust the budget, but alsocould overbuild the house.Instead, I suggested she buyinexpensive butcherblock coun-tertops from IKEA and refinishand stain them deepmahogany — which saved her$1,800 right off the bat. Sinceshe was planning to spendthat money anyway, I recom-mended she take the savingsand build in the refrigeratorand extend the countertop, creating a niche for themicrowave in the process, which would increase futureresale value. I also suggestedusing inexpensive, scoredbeaded board panels, ratherthan real tongue-and-grooveboards.“

ABOVE & RIGHT: January 2003’s “It’s AllBlack & White” featured a dated ‘60s bath-room remodel. Joetta wrote, “They were hope-ful that their outdated, l960s bath could befreshened without breaking the bank.

The homeowners disliked everything aboutthe room. The yellow tile on the floor and thepinky-beige tile in the shower were verydated—even when they moved into the housein l984.

The cabinetry was ugly, the drawers didn’tslide easily, the dressing table opposite thedoorway was never used, and the culturedmarble sink had cracked. About the only thingthey wanted to preserve was the large storagecloset between the tub and the dressing table.

house& home | December 2015 | www.houstonhouseandhome.net24

“I believe if it’s paid for, let’s try to make it work,” she says.“The effective strategy is to rethink what is ready paid for andalready there.”

She offers a few parting tips forreaders of her column:• If you have a collection of items, group themtogether in one place rather than scatteringthem throughout the room or the house.

• Let more natural light into the room – it makesit brighter and more cheery.

• If you have variety of crystal items, they willbe lost against a white wall. Instead, group themtogether on a table top where you can see themrather than on a bookcase.

• Recover a sofa to give it a new look, but only ifthe furniture is to be saved for sentimental value.Otherwise, it usually is more economical to buya couch in the new desired colors.

• Paint the back of a bookcase a different colorfrom the wall. It will make a huge difference inthe room.

Joetta’s June, 2008 article titled, “Adios, Eighties” illustrated how new paint, countertops, appliances and backsplash can transform a kitchen without breaking the bank.

In House & Home’s July, 2007 issue, the article titled, “Modest Makeover,” featuredan outdated master bath turned sleek with added space, light and accessibility.

Details make the difference in a kitchen or a bath, andthe backsplash is one design element that can rock orwreck a room.

Choosing a backsplash for a kitchen or shower treat-ment can be overwhelming because the sheer number ofmaterials, colors, and styles available is almost limitless.

For kitchens, ceramic and glass tiles continue to top thenational market, with natural stone as a third favorite, according to the 2015 survey by the National Kitchenand Bath Association.

Mirror, metal or metal-look tiles are also gaining popu-larity for contemporary homes. Painted wallboard andlaminate are less requested.

“The main trend for kitchens is a clean, crisp look, veryminimalist, with lots of neutrals,” says Wendy Stine withCrossville Tile & Stone, a major manufacturer and dis-

tributor of backsplash materials, with showrooms in theHouston area.

“Some customers add visual interest by placing tiles in apattern, like herringbone, or using subway tiles with abeveled edge for texture, or framing with a pencil liner, but generally, we are seeing clean lines and very fewaccents,” she adds.

Greater Houston is an interesting market, suppliers say, because it combines a sizeable demand for cutting edgecontemporary styles, especially in the inner loop, and anequally strong call for more traditional designs in the sur-rounding residential neighborhoods.

For example, a more time-honored look that goes withcherry cabinets and paneled doors is travertine and tum-bled marble, which Stine says is still a draw for backsplash-es in more traditional homes.

There may be a lot of choices but the kitchen and bathindustry does not make changes as quickly as fashion orfurniture.

“For the homeowner, a kitchen is a long-term investmentand for the manufacturer, it’s a long process to design anddevelop new products, so change is not rapid,” she says.

Trends on the newer side include linear glass mosaics insolid colors and subway tiles in whites, warm grays, biscuitand black.

“We have a new glass tile with seashells in it, and arounded tile that looks like bamboo.”

According to Pruett, travertine continues to be a stand-by for customers who want a more traditional, timelesslook.

Stine says other favorites for backsplashes, in line withthe national trend, include the Ashbury MarketCollection, Sonoma Decorative Ceramics and Antolia BlissGlass,” she says.

Showers follow a similar trend but on a larger scale. Ceramic and porcelain tile rule for showers and floor-

ing, with natural stone coming in second. Leading colorsare white, off-white, gray and other neutrals.

Bathrooms are becoming more contemporary and show-ers are far more popular than tubs, especially large walk inshowers, according to the 2015 Kitchen and BathIndustry survey.

Ilse Benard, an interior designer in Galveston has tworecommendations on choosing a backsplash.

“Go with what you love. Right now I’m loving concretetiles from Morocco, but it’s not for everyone,” says interi-or designer Ilse Benard.

“Second, whether you’re working with a designer ordoing it yourself, take your time. Try looking at lots ofpictures, and compare style, color, cost and maintenance,”she adds.

EXPERTSREVEALPREFERREDLOCALSTYLES By Susan Fox

According to Peggy

McGowen, owner of Kitchen

& Bath Concepts, the “less

is more” approach seems to

have taken hold of the

Houston market. Today’s

trends point to a larger focus

on contemporary styling —

even in traditional homes.

“We’re seeing less elabo-

rate detailing with kitchen

cabinet styles, and simple

but smart appliance

designs,” she says.

Yet, a liking for monolithic

countertop profiles — along

with top choices going for

wood surfaces characterized

with unexpected textures —

give simpler design

approaches a big boost.

“It is still about creating

one special focal point —

whatever that might be — to

give the kitchen that much

desired “wow” factor,” she

says. For countertops, many

are choosing such woods as

mesquite, cherry and repur-

posed planks.

CONTEMPORARY MIXES

WITH TRADITIONAL

When Covington Builders

invited interior designer

Bradford Collier to do

another home project with

them, the directive was clear:

push the envelope a little.

The home is located in the

very traditional neighbor-

hood of West University.

However, the builders want-

ed to infuse the interiors with

a trending industrial modern

style. Yet, it had to also con-

vey a traditional sensibility in

terms of design and look.

Did they get the mix right?

Some cooks might say it is

the “proof of the pudding.”

Or in this case, Collier’s

kitchen; his recipe for indus-

trial-traditional turned out a

spot-on design that won

West University’s “Best of

Show” and “Best Kitchen”

during a 2013 home tour.

Collier’s interpretation

flows easily. The stair-stepped

furniture style cabinetry is

steeped in traditional style

yet adorned with industrial

hardware, while the plastered

vent hood feels sleek and

more modern in design. The white calcutta marble on the

back countertops offers nice and rather unexpected juxtaposi-

tion to the zinc-topped 10 x 4-foot-long island.

The color gray seems to know no architectural boundaries.

It is seen in all architectural styles: traditional, modern and

industrial abodes. Collier chose the perfect shade for the cabi-

nets, which he designed with dimensional effects in mind. The

backsplash — comprised of diamond-shaped glass and marble

tiles conveys a cleaned-up traditional-contemporary vibe.

“It’s a happy dance,” he says in regard to mixing materials

and styles.

Collier found four contemporary stools at Mecox that sit at

the island. Upholstered in a

grass cloth and topped with

linen seat cushions, they can

roll out or remain in place on

a very traditional reclaimed

wood floor.

Connected to the kitchen

is a long butler’s panty that

feeds into the dining room.

In that space are crisp modu-

lar shelves flanking a prep or

wet bar sink. Additionally,

the space accommodates a

wine cooler, microwave and

ice maker.

“I did push the envelope,

but I also satisfied traditional

expectations,” he says.

MINIMALISM WITH

A TWIST

Architect Dillon Kyle accept-

ed the job of renovating a

whole house in River Oaks.

The exterior footprint of

the house did not change,

but the kitchen was re-

worked.

“The space was original to

the 1980s house, but it was

chopped up and rather

dark,” says Kyle. A cabinet

wall housing the former

refrigerator and freezer were

removed, along with a penin-

sula island. The pantry under

the stairs was re-imagined

and the adjacent butler’s

pantry reconfigured.

“The owner wanted to

a clean, bright and fresh area

in the house,” says Kyle. “All

upper cabinetry in the

kitchen was eliminated, and

a few floating shelves were

instead installed to convey an

airy sense and to enlarge the

room visually.”

In keeping with the mini-

malistic aesthetic, a pantry

found underneath the stairs

behind large gleaming stain-

less steel doors lends space

for appliances often typically

kept on countertops, and for

such over-sized items as cut-

ting boards, platters and

trays — not to mention food

items. Open the doors and a

pop of turquoise color radi-

ates the mostly white

kitchen.

“Finding the right crafts-

men to produce the stainless

steel doors was a challenge,”

says Kyle. “Each leaf is about

300 pounds, and the

required hinges are a special-

ty item. The craftsman con-

structed one part of the door

first to test and make small

adjustments. Then, he

built the second one to

install.”

Adjacent to the kitchen is

a butler’s panty — more tra-

ditional by way of looks and

service. It provides storage

and display space for formal

china and silver, in addition

to providing a serving and

staging place for entertain-

ing.

Reclaimed wood for the floating shelves warms up this white kitchen by Sneller Custom Homes &Remodeling. Photo by Kolanowski Studio.

Entering the picture at

about this time was interior

designer Cindy Aplanalp,

owner of Chairma Design

Group. She offered up the per-

fect solution that entailed

incorporating soft discreet

color on the countertops and a

simpler design plan. She stuck

with a more traditional floor to

ground the airy look.

Aplanalp chose a stunning

porcelain waterfall countertop

revealing muted gold move-

ment for the island. The back

countertops are of the same

material.

Reclaimed wood, used both

on the floor and for floating

shelving just to the right of a

second oven,warm up this hot

spot — a perfect space for

entertaining since it easily flows

into other areas of the home.

Matt Sneller says one of the

challenges they faced was

installing the shelving. They

ended up cutting a groove in

the wood shelves to attach to

secure broad “hooks” that

were then hidden by an expan-

sive backsplash of creamy sub-

way tiles, arranged in a herring-

bone pattern.

Upper and lower cabinets, in

keeping with a more traditional

look, are located across from

the range and the open shelves,

which allow the space to relax

and breathe.

“It’s a good look — and a

great mix of classic, traditional,

modern and easy styles,” says

Jenny Sneller.

Bathrooms. These spaces are

as personal as they get. So,

it makes good sense to take

a moment to think them

HGTV — the place many

still tune into for visual

“how-to” information —

suggests style and function

drive any such project. The

TV gurus say the master

With that said . . . two

Houston-area bathrooms —

along with one in the Texas

in this month’s issue. Each

Interior Designer Lori

Toups-Fenton, owner of Sweet

Lake Interior Design, shows off

one that is a glamorous person-

alization suited for a resident

living near Rice University.

Sneller Custom Homes &

Remodeling in The Woodlands

shares their story of a custom

home built back in the 1990s;

one where the master bath seri-

ously needed some updating.

And, interior designer Nicole

Winmill of NR Interiors talks

about a new space she designed

for a home located in

Cordillera Ranch, a hill country

development in Boerne, TX.

REMODELED GLAM

“It was a big space that didn’t

make sense. When you walked

into the room, you essentially

walked right into the shower,”

says Fenton. The challenge

for her team was working

around the scalene triangle-

shaped windows. But they

worked their magic, as seen

in the photos.

“The footprint didn’t

change, but we did some

removing and rearranging,”

she says.

They also had to re-locate

plumbing in order to accom-

modate new placement for the

toilet, shower and bathtub.

“There’s so much going on

in this bathroom that we opted

for a cleaner look when select-

ing the tub and standing

faucet,” she adds. Almost half

of the room’s walls sparkle with

A stream-lined free-standing tub and a curb-less shower give a sleeker look to this bathroom.

glitzy or glass tiles. Even the chevron-patterned floor gleams

with high glass porcelain and striated line gray tiles.

“We had to cut down 12x24-inch floor tiles to get the

strips needed for the chevron pattern. It was a labor-intensive

job,” says Fenton.

She chose an over-scale Damask wallpaper by Carl

Robinson to add to the wall space, which both softens and

delights. A tongue and groove splash guard was placed under-

neath the top half of the papered wall.

Fenton gives this tip about installing wallpaper in the bath-

room: Natural fibers don’t last. And it all depends on the glue

used for the paper varieties. A clay-based glue or adhesive

works best in high-humidity areas. A visit to a specialty store

— and even Sherwin Williams — needs to happen in order to

find it.

Fenton points out the cabinetry design; it was inspired by

the sphere-shaped pendant.

“The client likes circular shapes, so I had my carpenter make

wooden overlays to place on the doors of the mirrored accesso-

ry and linen towers at the vanity.”

She adds that the mirrored doors also convey a sense of

depth to the corner area of the bathroom. As for the color

selected for the cabinet and vanity towers, Fenton mixed five

different stains together to get the desire hue, which is close to

being a blue-gray wash.

The budget for a bathroom remodel similar to this one runs

between $50,000 and $75,000. In order to avoid unwanted

expenses, Fenton suggests selecting all materials before the

demo begins to avoid surprises and delays.

MASTER WITH INDIVIDUAL CLOSETS

The gold-framed shower alone screamed the time had come for

a makeover. Matt and Jenny Sneller, owners of Sneller Custom

Homes & Remodeling, say the custom home, located in the

Champions area, was nicely built in the 1990s, but needed

updating. Unlike others, the bathroom had a nice, easy-to-

work-with floor plan.

The owners did choose to gut the space in order to cus-

tomize it to fit their needs and tastes.

The big desire — the pièce de résistance— for her was to

have the boutique closet of her dreams.

The result includes a mirrored closet door that folds out in

such a way to become a three-way dressing mirror. Plentiful

shoe racks showcase her heels and flats as if they were works of

art. Of course, the desire for her was to be able to quickly

inventory her needs with a quick visual sweep.

This is “her” side of the bathroom -- with access to a closet that resembles a shop boutique.

Friezes and decorative crown, furniture-style chests and

armoires, along with metallic gray paint by Benjamin Moore,

finish out the dressing room. It is so spacious and elegant

that it does not even warrant the mere classification of being

just a closet.

His closet was built out in walnut to convey a more mascu-

line feel. While a bit smaller, it does offer ample storage room

for clothes and accessories.

“Due to his hectic travel schedule, a specially designed cabi-

net — just outside the door of the main closet — was made to

house his suitcase and hamper, making getting home and

packing back up a much easier process,” says Matt Sneller.

The bathroom itself sits in the middle of the space, with

the individualized closets situated on either side. It features a

new 72x42-inch air-jetted whirl-pool tub, two separate vani-

ties situated across from one another, and a large frameless

glass shower decked out in shimmering mother of pearl

mosaic tiles.

Mirrored-door towers, which house all electrical items as

well as linens, flank each vanity sink. “They eliminate the

need for separate medicine cabinets and a tangle of wires,”

says Sneller.

“His”side of the bathroom leads into a smaller, more masculine closet, made of walnut.

The vanity on the left offers hidden, customized luggage storage.

“One of the owners is an

artist. She did the gold gilding

on the decorative pieces in the

bathroom,” says Sneller.

The countertops are mar-

ble and the floors, which have

radiant heat, are white marble

tem is technology driven.

Everything is pre-set,

budget range for this project:

$100,000.

HILL COUNTRY

CONTEMPORARY

The design goal was to cre-

ate a handsome, luxurious

master bathroom for relaxing

and enjoying hill country

views from the large window

located at the freestanding

soaking tub.

“I refer to the design aes-

thetic of this overall home

as Hill Country modern,”

says Nicole Winmill of

NR Interiors.

The planked-patterned floor

is limestone, as is most of the

wall. The wall tile framing the

window at the soaking tub is a

strong focal point.

The tub was a last minute

change out, according to

Winmill. “Originally a solid

limestone freestanding tub

was selected for this bath-

room, but due to the tremen-

dous weight of a solid stone

tub, it would have required

the tub to be lifted by a craneHer closet in blue metallic is a work of art in of itself. Her objective was to have a boutique closet.

Page 68: 1215 houhousehome vir

house& home | December 2015 | www.houstonhouseandhome.net68

and set in place on the slab with the rest of the home to be

framed around it. Therefore, we selected a lighter weight,

solid-surface tub that didn’t require extreme measures for

installation.”

The floating walnut vanity with floating shelves above to

one side, as well as the lower storage shelf, offers a contempo-

rary clean-lined look. The frameless wall-to-wall mirror, set

into the tiled wall with sconces mounted on top of the mirror,

again emphasis the dominate horizontal lines of this tranquil

escape.

This bath, part of a custom home built and designed specifi-

cally the homeowner, is located in Cordillera Ranch — an

exclusive, master-planned community in Boerne, TX — over-

looking the Jack Nicholas golf course.

The Hill Country bathroom combines materials for a clean, organic contemporary style. Photos, this page, by Kolanowski Studios.

Tips/Trends from Kitchen & Bath Guru PeggyMcGowen, owner of Kitchen & Bath Concepts(www.kitchen-concepts.com)

• Consider extended household: aging parents and friends. Can they utilize the guest bath comfortably? Curb-lessshowers, lower vanities, and roomy spaces are often moreaccommodating.

• Consult a specialist. Remodeling is too expensive not toget it right the first time.

• There is a strong move toward more contemporarystyling — even traditional homes feature more sleek, sim-ple design elements. For example: less cabinet style detailand monolithic countertop profiles.

Shower tiles from La Nova.

Native Trails sink adds rustic touch to the contemporary country home.

Are you from Houston? What part of the city do youcall home?I am originally from Dallas, but came here in 2001. I live in theRiver Oaks area – in a condo that I love. And I have an amazingstudio in the heart of West U. Both are ideal, as everything is 5minutes away. I have been here for 15 years and have been fortu-nate to grow as a designer and small business owner. I love Dallasand miss it every day because my family is there. But, I loveHouston too. I have met so many wonderful people here. Both feellike home to me now.

How and when did you get started in the business? What partsof the Houston area/region/country do you serve?I have done design work in other cities around the country. Butprimarily my business in focused on Houston, Austin and Dallas. My first job was in commercial design, working for a national shop-ping mall builder until around 2000. Afterwards, I moved toHouston and took a position as the design coordinator for a multi-family firm. Eventually, I moved into residential interior design andbegan doing home models – selecting all the finishes with buyers. Iworked with builders in Dallas, Houston and Chicago until 2008.Like a lot of people in the home building industry though, I lostmy job that year. So, I decided to start my own interior design firm, which celebrated its seventh anniversary in October. It was the best

thing that could have happened to me. Every year has been biggerand better than the last.

What was the last completed project you did? What was thescope, the challenges, the successes? I just wrapped up a 16-month long renovation of a Heights house. The house is more than 100 years old and I was the general con-tractor as well as working with the owner on the design. Old hous-es are always challenging because you never know what is comingnext. But, it was amazing, too. The house was an uninhabitablewreck when they hired me. Today it is one of the prettiest on theblock! And they let me into their lives and trusted me with that. Itwas an honor and that is success.

What type of projects are you drawn to?What am I not drawn to? I love everything. But, I guess my toptwo areas would be kitchen & bath renovations and any facet thatinvolves wallpaper and fabric.

Do you have a signature touch or look? I would say that the signature of my style is that it is always cleanand always has some color. I steer clear of fussy, cluttered or tooneutral. Also, a client pointed out to me a few years ago that I onlychoose solid-colored sofas. I had never noticed before, but she was

right. When I really thought about it, I realized I do that becausethey are timeless. That is the one place where I stay neutral. And,then, of course, add color to the room with drapery and pillows.

What are the top three design trends that you keep seeing?1. GOLD has been all over the design scene for several yearsnow. But it has just recently flooded the mainstream and is every-where these days. But this is not your parent’s “Ugh! Shiny BrassyGold” This a deep, muted gold that feels warm and rich. I do notexpect the trend to fade anytime soon.

2. WALLPAPER is everything! It can transform the most awkward, boring, uninspired space into a breath taking show stopper. And thewilder the pattern the better.

3. MID-CENTURY MODERN. I know the mid-century thinghas been going strong for quite a while. But, it seems like it rein-vents itself every season with a fresh take on the era.

What are your mainstays and what trend do you think willnever go out of style?Black. Black will always be the new black. It has a distinguished andtimeless elegance that anchors the room in every type of décor, from modern to country to traditional and back again. And White.White is a chameleon that can go anywhere and be anything.

What advice would you give someone thinking about workingwith a professional?I would say assess your project and know what you are gettingyourself into with it. So many people think they can go it alonewhen redoing their kitchen or bath only to find out they have noidea what they are doing. Or they come to me AFTER they havebought the new sofa that is completely the wrong size for their

space. Working with a designer will save you time, money and stressin the long run. Start by looking for someone that has photos intheir portfolio similar to your tastes. And then ask for an upfrontpaid consultation. This will often only run you a few hundred dol-lars. But, you get the chance to bounce ideas off a professionalbefore fully committing to a long term hire.

What is your own personal design style?I tend to gravitate toward a more modern aesthetic. As I men-tioned previously, I think it is the uncluttered aspect of it thatappeals to me. Definitely a warm modern though. Nothing toostark or cold. In general, I like clean lines and a good balancebetween positive and negative space. And color! I love color!

What national or world-renowned designers do you turn to forinspiration?Dorothy Draper. She paved the way for interior design. She wasalways pushing the boundaries and looking for inspiration in theworld around her. Her rooms were very over the top and grand. But, when I need inspiration, her photos of the past still seem tohave a connection to the present.

Whether it is a color she used or the way two patterns are mixed, there is always something. Her attention to detail was amazing. And, she is famous for saying “If it looks right, it is right.” I reallybelieve that too. If it looks good and functions well, then that is allthat matters.

What is the one thing you cannot do without? My Ipad Mini. I am on it constantly. I have an app on my Ipadcalled Zinio. It holds all of my magazine subscriptions in a cloud. Ilove it. I can and do look back through several years of each maga-zine on a daily basis.

Her personal style gravitates more toward a clean aesthetic. Giebels likes to work with fabric as well as wallpaper.

Icame to the HSPCA in February, weighin’ in at 55 lbs. Afterspendin’ eight months at my foster home, I lost about 20 pounds. Now, I still have some weight to shed, but I’m a funny, smart, outgoin’ feller who is mostly house-trained and I know how touse a doggy door. My other canine trucker friends get me excitedand I can get a little “barky” when we play and talk about thegood ol’ days on the road. I’m great with kids and they like me,too. I’m better on a harness than a regular ol’ collar, and I reallyenjoy goin’ out and explorin’ the trails. I know lots of commandslike “sit,” “stay” and “down,” and love to play fetch. I acquiredmy newly trimmer physique by eatin’ Hill’s Healthy Weight for-mula, and when Hill’s shared the HSPCA’s pictures of myprogress, it was their most viewed, shared and liked social mediapost ever. Boy howdy, who’d a guessed? Won’t ya come on backand tawlk tuh Rosco? Over...and out.
