21-Year-old stabbed to death

New wave ofXenophobia?Shortly before midnight on Saturday, the family of a 21-year-old man from Malaiskop received a phone call that every family hopes never to receive. The call was to inform them that their loved one had been stabbed to death.

Thendo Elton Mongango was stabbed to death in the vicinity of a local bar lounge. His death may have been the result of a pub argument, but it sparked renewed acts of xenophobia in the area.

The provincial spokesperson for the police, Col Ronel Otto, confi rmed that the police have opened a murder case, following the incident. She said the fi ght started after the accused, Muthelo Hardlife (19), allegedly asked for a cigarette from the de-ceased at the bar lounge.

They fought for some time before Hardlife allegedly went to fetch a knife at the place where he lived.

“He allegedly chased [Thendo] around and stabbed him to death,” Col Otto said. “After that, he tried to run away, but some Zimbabweans hunted him down and handed him to the police.”

The fact that the Zimbabwean residents reported-ly handed the suspect to the police didn’t stop the Mailaskop residents from banishing all immigrants, legal and illegal, from the village. Some community members apparently even went as far as chasing the Zimbabwean residents through the bushes and telling them never to set foot in the village again.

During Limpopo Mirror’s visit to the deceased’s family on Monday, the bereaved mother wept bitterly. She could hardly speak. She wailed and uttered that she wished she could be granted only

a minute or two with her son.The deceased’s sister, Ms Lilian Mongango, said

that she had never imagined that she could lose a brother at such a tender age and through such an act of brutality.

“We are seriously hurting as a family,” Lilian said. “My mother is even unable to swallow food because of the pain caused to us.”

A villager, who declined to be named for fear of victimisation, said that chasing all Zimbabweans away was not a good solution. She said some of the immigrants were hard workers who were by no means involved in any criminal activities.

The ugly face of mob violence reared its head again in Tshikota during the past weekend. On Sunday, a mob of angry residents attacked a 20-year-old Zimbabwean man and beat him to death.

The police’s provincial spokesperson, Col Ronel Otto, said on Wednesday that the police were still investigating the circumstances around the incident that led to the man’s death. “We can confi rm that the deceased, Mr Knowledge Zukwa, a Zimbabwean national, was found dead on Sunday,” said Otto.

She indicated that the police had received information that Zukwa had stolen some goods from people residing at Tshikota. The victims of these alleged burglaries and theft went to Zukwa’s house and found their stolen goods inside his shack.

That was when they allegedly got angry and started beating him.

According to eyewitnesses, who refused to be named, Zukwa dashed out of his shack and ran down the street. Residents cornered him, how-ever, before he could reach the nearby bushes. “They picked up whatever they could lay their hands on and hit him until he died,” said one eyewitness. “He was totally naked. I have never seen a human being die such a horrible death in my whole life.”

The leader of the Zimbabwean community in Limpopo, Mr Gift Eglone, said that inasmuch as the Zimbabwean community in South Africa did not support crime, they also did not support murder and street justice.

It has been almost a week since a trial-awaiting prisoner, Tsh-ilidzi Masindi, stole a police uniform at the holding cells at the Thohoyandou Magistrate's Courts and slipped to freedom unnoticed.

Even though a massive man-hunt ensued after his escape, here has been no trace of him and he has not been recaptured. According to Thohoyandou po-lice spokesperson Maj Mashudu Malelo, the escape happened last Tuesday at the close of business. It is believed that the 36-year-old Masindi, from Maraxwe, who is facing charges of murder, was in court for allegedly raping another inmate while he was in prison, awaiting trial for the murder case to be heard in the Thohoyandou High Court.

“He might have hidden himself in a passage at the holding cells and gotten hold of the police uniform from the cabinets where the court orderlies store their uniforms. At this stage, we do not know exactly what happened, but investigations are at an advanced stage to determine how he man-aged to leave the court premises undetected. We cannot rule out the possiblity of an inside job, but

this would form part of our inves-tigations. If any of our members is found to have aided the suspect in escaping, he will face the full might of the law,” Malelo said.

He confirmed that an internal d i sc ip l ina ry process had al-ready been in-stituted around the incident and appealed to the community to help them bring back the suspect to face the music.

" W e h a v e dispatched our tracing teams all over and we hope that, with the support of the community, it will just be a matter of time before we get him back to the cells where he belongs," said Malelo.

He appealed to members of the community not to confront

the suspect as he is deemed very dangerous.

Those with information can forward it to the investigating officer, W/O Ntshavheni Ratshie-dana, at 082 401 9736.

Shocked residents Ms Ozzie Sibafa, Mr Elias Matangwaza and Ms Taki Lambani look at the spot where Knowledge Zukwa was killed by the mob.

(From page 1)“We solely believe in the na-

tional justice system and believe that every offender must face the wrath of the law if proven guilty,” he said. “We say the police and the courts are there to do their work.”

Eglone stressed that if they had tried to protect the guy from the wrath of the mob, it would have seemed as if the Zimba-bwean community supported the criminal activities going on in Tshikota. “That action alone would have resulted in an even bigger war,” he indicated. “Then it would have been a war of one nationality against another – something which we do not want to see happening here.”

According to Eglone, the com-munity was very angry and did not want to show any mercy to the alleged offender. Even the police themselves could not do much as the community did not want to see the police at the scene.

“There were only two officers, who couldn't use any force to stop the masses as they would have put their own lives in danger,” Eglone said. “They said that more vans and police force members were attending to a similar inci-dent at Mailaskop.”

A relative of the deceased, Mr Elias Matangwaza, echoed Eglone's sentiments. He said that watching his relative lying naked and dead in the open was too much for him. “It may take me years to recover from the trauma,” he said.

Cllr Brian du Plooy (Ward 21) condemned the act of mob justice and said that the residents must always give the police a chance to do their work. “This situation is unacceptable,” he said. “We

have scheduled a community meeting for next Wednesday, where we will talk about this pressing issue.” Meanwhile, it has just emerged that Zukwa was an acquitted suspect in the case which also involved 'gang leader' Given Mpofu. He previously went by the alias of Courage Shoko. Mpofu and his friends (including Zukwa or Shoko) had apparently upset the Tshikota residents late last year because of his alleged criminal activities.

The body of Chicco Shirinda is covered at the scene where he died.

The business fraternity, most-ly street hawkers in Thohoy-andou, are mourning the passing away of one their longest-serving hawkers in

town, France Shirinda (43).The mysterious death of the

well-known Shirinda caused shockwaves among friends and relatives. He worked as a street

hawker fo r years in the Thohoyandou CBD but fell and died at his stall last T h u r s d a y afternoon at about closing time. Popu-larly known a s C h i c c o , he hails from Maniini but was of Mo-zambican or-igin.

He was de-scribed as a good, cheerful person who was always

cracking jokes with customers, and that helped him to amass a big clientele around the Thohoy-andou area.

“We were just about to close for the day at around 16:00 when Chicco collapsed and gasped for air. We rushed to assist him while, at the same time, calling the ambulance people,” said a woman who has a stall next to him.

She said while they were trying to resuscitate him, the ambulance people arrived and administered first aid. “After a short while, they stopped what they were doing, and I could sense that something was wrong. I later learnt that he was dead."

After a while, relatives of the dead man came and the mood became more sombre when they cried uncontrollably. A woman, believed to be his wife, nearly fainted at the scene.

“Death took him away so suddenly...”

Cllr Nkele Milanzi (right) congratulates Mayor Mihloti Ramoyada shortly after her fruitful public visit to the communities of Ward 5.

Hundreds of excited commu-nity members from Ward 5 of Musina Municipality recently converged at Renaissance High School's grounds to listen to Mayor Mihloti Ramoyada as she continued her drive to strengthen the relation-ship with the communities she serves.

“As public office bearers and public servants, we are firmly committed to the code of conduct of public service and therefore promise to serve our people with loyalty, respect, dignity and integrity. We shall put people first in carrying out our duties and will respond to their needs through consultation and partic-ipation in order to fos-ter integration between the public service and citizens, to continue to strive to overcome the challenges of develop-ment,” she added.

She said the munici-pality would ensure that it strengthened its part-nership with the public by making use of the platform for consulta-tion and participation to inform and influence the government’s decisions to cater for the needs of

people. “We aim to enhance the quality and accessibility of gov-ernment services by improving efficiency and accountability to the recipients of public goods and services.”

Ramoyada said the munic-ipality would always render services as guided by the prin-ciples of Batho Pele. “These include regularly consulting with customers, setting service standards, increasing access to services, ensuring higher levels of courtesy, providing more

and better information about services, increasing openness and transparency about services, remedying failures and mistakes and giving the best possible value for money.” Most of the issues raised by community members were in relation to unemploy-ment, housing, roads and crime. Apart from the challenges, other community members also praised the municipality for the good work in implementing different projects for the improvement of the lives of the people.

of my house (pointing at the 'scotch-roofing'). It's boys from outside South Africa who did this kind of job and I paid them for their services,” she said. “I feel that only an individual must be punished for his crime and not all people.”

Vhamusanda Vho-Joseph Nthabalala said he learned about

the incident on Sunday morning. “I got the news that community members were angry and chasing all Zimbabweans through the bushes, after a young man was killed the previous night by a man from Zimbabwe,” Nthaba-lala said. “I realised that unless I acted quickly by addressing my people, more murders might occur in the village. I advised the angry community to refrain

from using violence and not to take the law into their own hands, while they were busy chasing the Zimbabweans out of the village.”

Hardlife appeared in court on Monday, where his case was postponed to Thursday.

The community is holding a memorial service today, at 15:00. Thendo will be laid to rest at Mailaskop on Saturday. The funeral service will start at 06:00.

Health Department suspends nurse for alleged negligenceThe provincial spokesperson of the Department of Health, Mr Macks Lesufi , fi nally confi rmed that two nurses who were involved in the negli-gence case at the Khakhu clinic were suspended, following a disciplinary hearing.

The 19-month-old Mulalo Prince Mulaudzi died after three nurses at the clinic allegedly refused to help in October last year. The parents of the victim, Mr Mashudu and Mrs Mumsy Mulaudzi, submitted a complaint to the Department of Health because they believed that their child had died because the nurses had refused to help.

The then health spokesperson, Ms Adele van der Linde, issued a statement, promising that the department would launch a full investigation into the matter to establish what had led to the incident. She further said that if the department found negli-gence to be a factor, they would not hesitate to act.

One nurse was suspended for a month and served

with a fi nal written warning. “The other nurse was [also] served with a fi nal written warning,” Lesufi said. “There is defi nitely progress in the case so far.”

Lesufi added that the nurse who had been put on one month suspension was not satisfi ed with the department’s decision. She appealed against the disci-plinary action that was taken against her. “The case will only be fully concluded once the appeal of one of the nurses is heard and finalised,” said Lesufi .

However, Mr Mu-laudzi still feels dis-

satisfi ed in the manner in which the department is treating the case.

“They are not communicating anything in clear terms, and we

are just left without any infor-mation about proceedings,” he fumed. “We are speaking about the life of our child here. Suspending the nurses

is not enough.”So far, nothing has been said

Police need help to locate rape suspect

An award-winning actress and television hostess, who featured in different local soapies, gave inspirational talks to disabled pupils and told them not to look down on themselves but to stick to their future dreams.

Florence Masebe, a popular face on national television, attended the recent Tshilidzini Special School’s Casual Day prize-giving ceremony. During the event, schools which sold the most Casual Day material, including caps, stickers and shirts, went away with prizes. The winning schools received trophies, medals and certificates.

The coordinator of the func-tion, Mr Khorommbi Ligammba, said the event was held to thank

all stakeholders who had sup-ported them during Casual Day. “Through their support, we came up tops nationally for having sold the most material, and if it were not for them, we would not have succeeded so well. The money we accumulated will go a long way in making life easier for our disabled pupils. We are always in need here. Some have eyesight problems, some cannot even walk, and with the money we can at least buy some of the necessities,” he said.

Florence Masebe said she hailed from Tshakhuma and knew how to fetch wood from the veld and how to carry wa-ter on her head from the river. “Against all the odds I managed to overcome my handicaps and

ensured that my dream of suc-ceeding in life became a reality,” she said.

She told them that they should be positive and set themselves targets in life if they were to succeed. “Nothing is impossible; you can do it. I am an example that it is possible in life,” she added.

The top primary school was Fondwe, who raised R50 295, while Tshivhase took the hon-ours in the secondary school category, after raising R100 648. St Augustine took the honours in the combined schools cate-gory. Khumbe Apostolic Faith Mission Church raised R36 208, while Vhufuli was the winner in the category for senior primary schools.

The recent farewell function of the principal of Patrick Ramaano Secondary School, Vho-Mavhungu Khandela (64), was a joyous celebration of the successes which the school had achieved under his leadership.

During the event, several speakers and well-wishers em-phasised the outgoing principal’s dedication and good leadership skills, which saw the school grooming pupils to become pil-lars of their communities.

“Vho-Khandela was also in-strumental in guiding and en-couraging learners to develop other talents which are beyond academic excellence,” said Lucky Tshilimandila, a former pupil.

Vho-Khandela be-came principal of the school in 1987, when the school had an en-rolment of 620 learners. In that year, the school had only 15 classes, 25 teachers and 123 Grade12 pupils. The school grew and devel-oped dramatically un-der his leadership, with scholars who excelled academically, socially and culturally.

The school’s Grade

12s were in the top 30 for the first time in 2012. Last year, they performed well and obtained a 95% pass rate. They were fifth in the province and were announced as the top school in Vhembe District. “A Grade 12 pupil in the 2013 class, Miss Khuthadzo Tshiovhe, made history for the school by becoming the first pupil to obtain distinctions in all her subjects,” Tshilimandila said.

Vho-Khandela thanked all the colleagues, former pupils and members of the community for believing in his leadership. “I also urge other teachers to work harder and unite themselves at the school in one purpose of

grooming learners into responsi-ble individuals who respect one another and love their nation,” he said.

Representing the former pu-pils, Mr Humbulani Musandiwa said that Vho-Khandela’s leader-ship skills remained unmatched. “We believe that Vho-Khandela will continue serving the school as an adviser whenever he is requested to do so,” Musandiwa said.

Vho-Khandela is leaving the school which has now grown to 31 classes, 2 198 pupils and 69 teachers. He is retiring after after spending 27 years at the helm of the school.

A man, believed to be about 35 years of age, is wanted by the Mphephu SAPS in connection with a recent rape incident in Ha-Mphaila Nzhelele.

The man has short hair, is black in complexion, fluent in Tshivenda, of medium height and slen-derly built and uses a knife to threaten his victims.

According to the police statement, the unknown man allegedly raped a 22-year-old woman on 21 July. He allegedly approached his victim while she was walking and asked her name. He later allegedly told her that he was a very dangerous man and he terrorised people and that he could severely stab her.

It is alleged that he then took the woman’s bag and pushed her into the bush, after which he informed her that he wanted to rape her. He then searched the woman’s hand bag and looked for money and a cell phone. The man the allegedly told her that he needed an expensive phone and a lot of money.

He then raped her and vanished into thin air; he is still at large. The incident was later reported at the Mphephu police station.

He was last seen wearing a cream-coloured long-

sleeve T-shirt with blue and brown stripes and a cream-white hat (spottie).

The police are appealing to any member of the public who might come across the suspect to call W/O Mynhardt from the Child Protection Unit on 079 5238 266 or contact the nearest police station.

Hundreds of rhinos could soon be relocated from the Kruger National Park (KNP) to new homes.

On Tuesday, the Minister of Environmental Affairs (DoE), Edna Molewa, announced her de-partment’s integrated strategy plan in attempting to deal with the escalating number of poached rhinos. The plan to have rhinos relocated to “safer strongholds outside of the park” was one of many solutions proposed by the DoE. “Relocations from the KNP and the creation of rhino strongholds could allow the total rhino population of South Africa to continue to grow,” she said.

Rhino killings have spiked from 13 in 2007 to 1 004 last year, and are still continuing to increase,

despite the deployment of soldiers in the vast nature reserve.

In implementing the relocation of park rhi-nos, it is expected that about 500 rhinos will be moved. Of these, 260 will allegedly be sold to private buyers, while the rest will be taken to a safe location.

According to the DoE, a survey conduct-

ed in 2013 showed the rhino population in the KNP to be about 8 400 black rhinos and 9 600 white rhinos. “Poaching, natural deaths and the trans-location of rhino from the KNP presently match rhino births. This means that the rhino population in the KNP has stabilised,” said Minister Molewa.

Despite this, the Minister said that her depart-ment was compelled to implement a pro-active anti-poaching initiative. Other interventions in-clude continued efforts to increase rhino numbers through, for example, translocation to low-risk areas, range and population expansion.

New interventions include steps to disrupt crime syndicates by means of better cooperation between the different security departments and organisa-tions, as well as continuous joint operations with key neighbouring countries such as Botswana and Mozambique.

Molewa also added that her department was au-thorised by the national cabinet, during July 2013, to explore the feasibility of possibly trading in rhino horn as part of a long-term solution.

“There is no final decision on this matter … an inter-ministerial committee and panel of experts have been established to consider all possibilities,” said Molewa.

In the meantime, 400 rhinos have been poached in the KNP since the beginning of the year up until 31 July.

Ongoing theft worries SGB

“Mozambicans are hard workers and not ritual murderers”

The school governing body (SGB) of Tshifhena Secondary in Tshi-kombani is worried that the on-go-ing theft in the area might intensify. This after the school was recently broken into and a computer was stolen from one of the teachers’ offices.

A guard patrols the school through-out the night, but he was not aware that there was a culprit inside the school premises. The chairperson of financial affairs of the SGB, Mr Patrick Kutame, said the incident

was not the first one to occur at the school premises. Earlier this year, groceries were stolen at the school. The Siloam police have opened housebreaking and theft cases and are investigating. “Yes, a computer was stolen. The culprit broke the door to gain entrance. We are investigating the case and no one has been arrested yet,” said Siloam police spokesperson W/O Edward Tharaga.

The principal, Mr Nndweleni Maphala, said there were also taking the matter to the tribal council.

Mozambicans living in South Africa were given a tongue lashing when their ambassador in South Africa recenty visited them at Xiphura-phureni, where a man was recently found ritually murdered.

Ambassador Fernando Fazenda visited the area a fortnight ago, after an outcry about crimes, which includ-ed the recent ritual murder, where a 20-year-old man was chopped to death and body parts removed. The parts were allegedly to be sold for R100 000.

The dead man, Ndhuma Claude Miyambo, was lured from Nkowan-kowa with the promise of a job in the Malamulele area. While being taken to the prospective “employer”, he was attacked from behind and chopped with an axe. His death ignited an outcry from the community, fearing that the ugly crime of ritual murders

Ambassador Fernando Fazenda urged his people to refrain from engaging in ritual murders, saying it was a foreign practice.

was back again in the Vhembe area

After his death, com-munity members strug-gled to take the body home for burial. He has since been buried at his home village in Mozam-bique with the help of relatives.

The ambassador and his entourage, which included Mozambican consul Ms Ester Tondo, was warmly welcomed by the residents. Fazen-da said they were in the area because of the bad publicity the community was receiving after the ritual murders of one of them, allegedly by fellow countrymen.

“Ritual murder is not

our culture and when we hear of it from among our people, it makes us very sad and disappointed. Our people are known for working very hard, and we receive accolades wherever we go because of the dedication our people put into any type of work,” he said. He urged his people not to copy for-eign habits that brought the dignity of Mozambicans into disrepute. He also urged them to work hand in hand with the police in order to fight criminality among them.

One of the local community lead-ers, Mr Eric Masungwini, told the visitors that the perpetrators of the crime were not local people but from outside. “We have been staying here for the past 20 years and nothing of this sort has ever happened. We are not involved in this thing; it was done by people from outside this area,” he said.

P&L Training Centre empowering communityThere was happiness in the air when 59 stu-dents were presented with national certificates after completing different courses at P&L Hardware Training Centre.

The event was held at Mountain Inn Hotel on Friday. The students travelled from all corners of the province for the ceremony.

According to Mr Theunis Strydom, the chief operating officer of the P&L Hardware centre, at least 111 students successfully completed their courses. Twenty-six students received national certificates in wholesale and retail operations lev-el 2. Eighteen were awarded national certificates in wholesale and retail operations level 3, while 15 students graduated with FET certificates in generic management level 4.

Strydom congratulated and motivated the grad-uates to continue working harder. He illustrated his point by telling the story of Australia-born Nick Vujicic, who was born without arms and legs, but eventually managed to grasp the mean-ing of hope through perseverance.

“Let Nick be an inspiration and testament for all of us – as one man’s triumph over adversity,” he encouraged. “My message to all of you is to acquire new skills and knowledge; that’s a very simple and proven formula for success.”

The region’s executive manager of the W&RSETA, Ms Ntombi Dludla, acknowledged the fact that juggling work and studies at one and the same time could have been very demanding for the graduates. “Being successful while jug-gling a career and family life as well is no mean feat!” she said. Dludla told the students that, by completing the programme successfully, they had proven to their employer that they were dedicated and committed. “You have proven that you are prepared to honour opportunities provided to you and that you respect investments made in your future,” she said. “Now I urge you to continue displaying your loyalty in your work places. And also make every customer you deal with feel special; only that will make you a valued team player!” Ms Mmatsewela Phosa (24), who obtained a national certificate in wholesale and retail operations level 2, said she was very happy about her achievement. “I am better equipped than before, and this will also make me continue

to work hard and in good spirit with my colleagues. I now have more skills.”

Ms Vhutshilo Muk-wevho (29) received a meritorious mention during the event. She was among the top three students of the 20 000 students who registered at W&RSE-TA accredited cen-tres. “It’s through hard work and dedication that I had managed to achieve that,” she said. “I was awarded R5 000 and an iPad, as the best woman student.”

Photographed are (from left to right) Mr Theunis Strydom, Ms Mmatsawela Phosa (student), Ms Ntombi Dludla and Ms Chrisna Nortjé.

A cake was cut as a part of celerating the P&L Hardware Training Centre’s 10th birthday. Pictured are (from left to right) Ms Ntombi Dludla, Ms Chrisna Nortjé, Ms Alice de Gama and Mr Charles Skeen.

“Mayor must pull up her socks”

Certificates in basic education for Thohoyandou offenders

The DA in Mutale has warned the new mayor, Cllr Sarah Rammbu-da, that she must provide better services to the communities than her predecessor or she will also get the boot.

“We want better service delivered to our communities and nothing else. Mutale is a rural-based municipality and, unless deep rural communities

are delivered with better services, we will not win the war against poverty, unemployment and underdevelop-ment,” said the DA chairperson in Mutale, Mr Joseph Mariba.

He was speaking in the Mutale council chambers, shortly after Cllr Rammbuda was elected in the place of Cllr Josephine Mukwevho as mayor.

Several offenders at the Thohoyandou Correctional Centre (Matatshe) re-ceived skills development training while they are still serving their sentences.

About two weeks ago (5/8) 48 offend-ers received certificates for hairdressing, basic business skills, adult basic education or further education and training during a ceremony at the cdentre.

“We understand some offenders in our prison were illiterate, while some are without basic skills. We want to empower them with skills and basic education, so that they can create jobs themselves or be marketable as soon as they are released,” said the area commissioner in Thohoyan-dou, Dir Richard Malebane.

According to him, the training formed part of the rehabilitation process to rein-tegrate with the communities where they

come from. “We want to break the cycle of crime among the offenders.”

The manager of Life After Prison, Mr Ndikandafhi Makhuvha, said that his organisation was excited and that it would be easier to assist ex-offenders

as they would be able to do things them-selves. Ralikhuvhana (26) is serving 20 years in prison for murder and said with the skills in hairdressing and basic busi-ness skills, she hoped she could put food on the table for her family.

who had received some basic skills training. “We promise to donate welding, car washing and knitting machines to some of ex-offenders, so that they may start a new life after serving their sentences in prison,” said Makhuvha.

One of the offenders who re-ceived a certificate in hairdress-ing, Ms Cecilia Ralikhuvhana, said the training and certificates they accumulated would help to change their life for the better

The area commissioner of Thohoyandou Correctional Centre, Dir Richard Malebane (left), handed over basic and education skills certificates to some of the offenders last Tuesday.

Four experienced police officials retireFour police officials who re-tired recently at the Siloam Police Station were described as warriors who worked tire-lessly to combat crime and sustain safety in the commu-nity.

Last Thursday, members of

the SAPS gathered at Mphephu resort to bid a fond farewell to the four officials. Maj Masala Masindi retired after 36 years, Capt Mbulaheni Rasiuba after 37 years, W/O Alpheus Muofhe after 34 years and Capt Thoma-ni Sithagu after 39 years.

The station commissioner of Siloam, Lt Col Justice Makonde Madala, said the four men were committed officials who were always willing to instil their skills into upcoming young policemen. “Their experience was valuable to the station and

it’s gone now,” said Madala.

He urged the four officials to continue working, especially for the community, through init iat ing strategies that will minimise crime and ensure that safety was prevail ing. “They must not change their lifestyle. These people must continue work-ing and exercising and they will survive more years. They are our custodians and we will consult them every now and then,” he added.

W/O Edward Tha-raga, who addressed the event on behalf of the South African Police Union, said most police officials learnt from them. “We understand it is time for them to rest. They have worked for a long period, and now they should sustain their lives and live long,” he added.

Photographed during the farewell ceremony are, from left to right, Maj Masala Masindi, Capt Mbulaheni Rasiuba and Capt Thomani Sithagu.

W/O Alpheus Muofhe (left) worked at least 34 years at the SAPS. With him is Mrs Ndanganeni Muofhe (right).

The Aids Foundation of South Africa (AFSA), through its Limpopo provincial office, recently met up with five community-based organisations from the Capricorn district for baseline survey training. AFSA provided grant support and training and is monitoring the organisations to implement the study. The survey will commence later this month and the data collection will end in September. The purpose of the baseline research survey is to gain a broader level of understanding of awareness on sexual reproductive health within these communities, including aspects such as circumcision, HIV prevention, cancer, gender and sexual identity, gender-based violence and family planning. It is anticipated that the findings of this research will shape the future interventions in these communities and it is likely new programmes will be developed. In the centre of the photograph is the project manager, Mr Patric Mathiba.

The chairperson of the employment relations forum of the higher education institutions, Mr Paul Sekobelo, has called on labour relations practitioners in higher education to make an impact in the development of labour policies and practices. He was speaking during a recent meeting of the inter-tertiary labour relations forum at Univen. Representatives from the 23 universities across the country attended the meeting. In our photo are some of the representatives of the various universities. (Photo: Silas Nduvheni)

Limpopo’s own queen of manyalo music and one of the youngest musicians to have entered the local music industry, Ndivhudzannyi Dec-orate Ralivhona, recently turned 18.

The girl, better known as Makhadzi in music circles, also recently launched her fourth album, Muhwalo U ya Nndemela.

Nicknamed Queen of manyalo because of her marriage and wedding songs, Makhadzi is one of the big success stories to have come out of this province. As part of celebrating her achievements and her 18th birthday, a big bash was recently held in her honour.

Some of the country’s top performers attended the event at the Vhulelu Restaurant and Lounge at Tshisahulu. The celebration attracted artists such as Racha Kill, Mizo Phyll, Sir McKleker, Mashudu Nematoka, Nicodermic, The Replay Dance Crew, Blackface Dance Crew, Killah G, Lil

Gee and DJ Rotla, as well as a horde of local social fl yers. Makhadzi, who will soon tour Zimbabwe and Mozambique, was recently signed by Rita Dee Entertainment. Rita Dee’s director and founder, Denga, said the bash was also to welcome her to their stable and to celebrate the successes of her previous albums, which sold like hot cakes. “This is also to celebrate the sponsorship we got from Madzonga Holdings, that will enable us to launch her new DVD in November,” she said.

Makhadzi, who hails from Ha-Mashamba, said that she was humbled. “I have never celebrated a birthday and the celebrations are a new chapter in my life and a sign that I am growing up. I can see good things coming my way after I signed with Rita Dee.”

For bookings and other information, Makhadzi can be contacted through her management compa-ny, Rita Dee Entertainment, at Tel 015 962 6189.

Khathu’s music is lively yet meaningfulThe first thing that captures the listeners’ attention on Khathu Nemapate’s new reggae album, Ni Sale Ni Tshi Tamba, is his distinct voice and original lyrics.

Even though he confesses to have taken his inspiration from the sounds of legendary reggae artist Colbert Mukwevho, his music remains distinctive as he doesn’t mimic his role model.

“I grew up listening to different kinds of music and many singers, but I am mainly inspired by Vho-Mukwevho,” he confesses.

This album is full of refreshing melodious echoes which are an integral part of the reggae genre. Nemapate is an artist whose singing gift ef-fortlessly endears him even to the hearts of people who have just heard his sounds for the fi rst time. His voice is surprisingly lively, considering the hard issues which he raises in his songs.

He urges all people to retrain from acts of crime such as killing, theft and prostitution. “People must learn to choose a good way of life,” he said. “After all, we all need to live in a safe and peaceful country.”

Ni Sale Ni Tshi Tam-ba, besides its core message where he advises fans to con-tinue listening to the artist’s music, even when he is no longer alive in this world, is

an album worth buying and listening to.“When we are in love we encounter a lot of

challenges every day,” he said. “So I am trying to address all these challenges and reminding my fans that we need to fi nd ways to deal with them.”

The title of this album also reminds listeners that people do not live forever in this world. “I see nothing wrong in reminding ourselves that there’s death for each of us at some time,” Nemapate says. “The knowledge that death is part of humanity also helps each one of us to prepare our way.”

In Dinangeleni, the artist belts out the lyrics, “Tshedza khetshi, swiswi kheli – dinangeleni (Here is the light, here is the dark – choose which way of life you want)”. Nemapate is deeply con-

cerned about matters of love. He tackles this subject matter aptly

and intimately in songs such as Lwanga Lufuno, Tshibulebule, Ndo Tshina Ngoma and U Na Mini Ene. In his songs he confesses that he has deep love which springs up

from the core of his heart and fl ows into the life of one who accepts this love.

“I have seen that many people tend to confuse material

attachments with love,” he says. His previous albums are Vhuyani Hayani (2009), Ndo Tshinya Mini (2010) and Kha Nne Ndi Lufu-no (2012).

Farewell to a dedicated educator “We are very sorry” - Indian communityIn biblical times, she would have joined the league of charitable women such as Dorcas, who knew what it was to have a warm heart, which became the source of her unselfish and charitable acts.

Teacher Francina Lukoto (65) of Sibasa Block Q has served her community with dignity and distinction for the whole of her working life. She has served the Department of Education for 44 years. She worked at different schools, but her last school was Dengenya Secondary, where she taught for more than 30 years.

When she retired, her com-munity gave her a warm send-

off. The event, which was also used to inspire serving educa-tors, was held in her honour at the school premises last Friday.

Principal Tshililo Alidzulwi said Lukoto’s retirement was a big loss to the school but was worth celebrating as she was of value to the school and the whole community. “She worked selflessly and was really dedicated to her work in such a way that she went an extra mile in trying to improve the condi-tions of the less fortunate. She adopted pupils who were from disadvantaged backgrounds and took them as her own children into her home. Many she helped are now independent and good

citizens,” he said.Sibasa circuit manager Mr

Lambani Tshivhase urged the teachers to follow in her foot-steps. “She was an exemplary educator who left a footprint which is worth following. May the breed of educators learn from her and our education thus improve,” he said.

In response, Lukoto said she was greatly humbled to realise how the community respected her work. “I love my work a lot, but I feel that after working for many years, one has to go back home and rest. I will not stop helping pupils as this is my passion, which started many years ago.”

The Thohoyandou Indian com-munity has distanced itself from the statement made by one of their community mem-bers during the recent visit to Thohoyandou by the Minister of Communications, Ms Faith Muthambi.

According to the spokesperson for the Indian community in Thohoyandou, Mr Shueb Ahmed, one of the concerned residents of Thohoyandou, who is also a well-known businessman in the area, told the minister that the Thohoyandou Indian community was receiving poor treatment from Thulamela traffic officials.

According to Ahmed, the man

who accused the traffic officials had some personal differences with the officials and not the In-dian community, as he had said. “Instead of using the word ‘I’, the man said ‘we’ as if he were representing the Thohoyandou Indian community,” said Ahmed.

Ahmed also mentioned that from that day their relationship with the Thulamela traffic offi-cials had turned sour.

“On behalf of the Thohoyan-dou Indian community, I wish to indicate that the man was not rep-resenting the Indian community, but himself,” he said. Ahmed further said that the Indian com-munity had nothing to do with

the differences between the man and the traffic officials. “I wish to apologise unconditionally for the harm which his utterances might have caused,” he concluded.

Ms Francina Lukoto (centre, with gifts) photogaphed with Mr Tshililo Alidzulwi, principal of Dengenya Secondary (thirrd from right), Sibasa circuit manager Mr Lambani Tshivhase (second from right) and other guests during the farewell function.

The bulk water project at Ha-Matsa in Nzhelele is finally providing water to the residents. Until very recently, the community members were complaining that the much-awaited bulk water project was just a white elephant. Even though the project is not entirely finished, residents are excited that they can now get water from the streets taps. Most residents have stopped collecting water from the river. The local ward councillor, Cllr Mbulaheni Magada, said the council was endeavouring at all levels to ensure that the communities have access to clean water. In the picture, a resident is collecting water from one of the street taps in the village.

Mr Shueb Ahmed.

Church News

“Forget about titles and serve God’s people”Pastor Rofhiwa Madzinge, the eldest son of the founder of the Christian Worship Centre, Apostle William Madzinge, was consecrated as bishop of the church a fortnight ago.

During the event, he said that it was time young pastors forgot about their titles and served God’s people.

At the age of 29, Madzinge, or Pastor RC as he is affection-ately called, is believed to be the youngest pastor to be con-secrated international bishop in the country.

His ordination and inaugura-tion to bishophood was attend-ed by bishops of Africa, local bishops, pastors, dignitaries and many members of the church. The ceremony was held at the CWC auditorium and was of-

ficiated by Archbishop Peter Ndlovu from Zambia. During the ceremony, Madzinge’s wife, Talifhani was also ordained as reverend in the church.

Ndlovu said it was because of the outstanding work that the young pastor was doing that the bishops in Africa decided to elevate him to bishop. He urged the young bishop to live a life of truth and to keep his personal character blameless.

“Be a servant and not a master, lead by example, rejoice in your colleagues’ successes, do not be a jealous minister of the people, refuse to measure your effective-ness by the numbers. Take your disappointments to God, and not to your congregation or your family,” he added.

Madzinge’s role as bishop did

not come as a coincidence. He was mentored by international preacher Pastor Irene Ramashia. He said he received the calling to work for God when he was still “in the crèche”.

He now heads the 8 000 strong CWC mother church, a position left vacant when his father left to lead the CWC International Fellowship.

Of his new role, Madzinge said it had not changed him. “I will do as I have been charged by the apostolic authority of the body of Christ as the Lord enables me.” He added that, despite the posi-tion, he was still the same pastor who served his flock.

Started in 1997, the CWC church boasts 72 branches with thousands of members through-out the world.

Traditional healers condemn ritual killingsTraditional health practi-tioners from Limpopo, under the auspices of the SADC Unified Ancestors Tradition-al Practitioners Association, came out strongly against the use of human tissue as medicine.

During a meeting on Friday, held at the clinic of the interna-tionally renowned traditional healer, Dr Sylvester Hlati in Malamulele, traditional healers from all districts of the province, clad in their traditional garb, burnt incense while calling the ancestors to intervene and stop the ritual murder scourge.

The meeting comes at the backdrop of a resurgence of ritual murders in Vhembe, with one reported in Malamulele area

where a man was found selling body parts and one in Tshitavha where a woman, Mercy Ndou, was ritually murdered. The same time the ceremony was held, Samson Majoko, the alleged Malamulele body parts seller, was applying for bail in the local magistrate’s court.

Hlati said it was out of con-cern that they met to seek help from the ancestors. “We are very saddened. The scourge of ritual murders seems to be on the rise again. We condemned this some years ago when Vhembe was still home to ritual murderers and it stopped. There is a sudden upsurge in the number of mur-ders related to muti killings.”

He strongly emphasised that human tissue has never been

prescribed for medicinal use “and those who are prescribing them are misleading people and are leading to the deaths of in-nocent people,” he said.

“Instead of going to court oppose bail at Majoko’s case, we are here calling our forefathers to have mercy on us. We are also here to ask the ancestors to deal with criminals without mercy and to expose them whenever they commit crime,” he said.

Traditional healer Dr MD Shirinda, who is also a Xitsonga music legend, said they were hopeful the scourge would end. “Today we have spoken with one voice, and we believe the ancestors listened to us and the senseless killing of our people will stop,” he said.

United against the scourge of ritual murders and crimes are traditional healers, the police and the government.

Calling on the ancestors during the ceremony are traditional healers MD Shirinda (second from right) and Dr Sylvester Hlati (third from right).

While other teams fought hard to book places in the last-16 stage of the Comrade Mdaka Soccer Challenge over the past weekend, the situation was totally different for Tshivhan-gani Stone Breakers.

Stone Breakers secured a place in the next stage of the competition without kicking the ball. Their opponents, Mukonde-ni Shooting Stars, were nowhere to be seen at the scheduled starting time of their match at the Bokisi village grounds.

This prompted the referee, Ms Seani Muliwa, to blow the final whistle, declaring the match a walk-over for Stone Breakers. In terms of the rules of the tourna-ment, teams must be on the pitch 10 minutes before kick-off, with no time of grace.

Shooting Stars only arrived at the grounds about 40 minutes after the scheduled starting time,

only to be told by the organizers that they had already been boot-ed out of the competition.

The results of the other match-es are Valdezia Juventus 1, Thembisa LasVegas 0; VK Mulima 2, Mpheni Young Stars 0; Muwawen Lucky Stars 2, S lenger AC Milan 0; Mat-lhar i FC 2 , Wata Peace M a k e r s 0 ; Elim Black-pool 2, Ntha-balala Amak-hosi 0; Water-val All Stars 4, Makulani Green Dreams 3 ; G u m a n i Young Stars 6 , M a s h a u Thondoni FC 4 (penalty shoot-out).

Tomorrow’s matches are: Mpheni Real Power vs Mailas-kop Active Killers, Madadzhe Eversmiling Stars vs Bungeni Young Diplomats and Bokisi FC vs Jomo Young Stars. The matches will be played at the Mashamba grounds.

Dzungani FC were crowned the champions of the Women’s Day Soccer tournament at the Makuya Solly Luvhengo grounds on Sunday. They beat Tshambuka FC 1-0 in the high-ly contested final.

The hosts, Makuya Try Again, finished in third place. They

The Kurhuleni Happy Fighters grounds will be a hive of activi-ty tomorrow. That is where the Kurhuleni Happy Fighters Soc-cer Challenge will be staged.

According to one of the or-ganizers of the tournament, Mr Power Lebese, four teams will battle it out for the championship. Teams that will try their luck in the one day event are: Mission Young Rovers, Hozani Citizen Stars, Phadziri FC and the hosts, Kurhuleni Happy Fighters.

The first semifinal match will be between Mission Young Rovers and Phadziri FC and is scheduled to start at 10:00. The match is expected to be a final before the actual final, as sparks fly when Mission Young Rovers and Phadziri meet in league encounters. Kurhuleni Happy Fighters will lock horns against Hozani Citizen Stars at 12:00.

Hozani are a closed book

Mr Veli Ntileni, coordinator of the tournament, stated that it was important that future stars' talent

be identified at grassroots level. He applauded the sponsors for helping to identify the talent of the region's youth and added that the youth of this region should be proud of their talent.

The winners will go home with a new kit, gold medals and a floating trophy. The runners-up will receive new sports kits and silver medals, while the third-placed team will receive bronze medals.

Madombidzha Poverty FC were crowned the champions of the SuperSpar Soccer tour-nament when they beat Mura-leni United 4-3 at Tshiozwi on Sunday.

The match ended in a goal-less draw and the winner was determined through a penalty shoot-out.

It was a well-balanced game, but Poverty created more scor-

ing opportunities. When United started to demonstrate their rough skills, Referee Mr Mendu-la Sadiki calmed the situation by reprimanding Rhulani Maringa with a card. Maringa had brutally tackled Dakalo Nwanamidwa from behind.

The keeper of Poverty, Tshi-managdzo Masala, made his presence felt in the 30th minute. United were awarded a free

kick just outside the box. Balo Mathavha unleashed from the set piece, but Masala impressed even the opponents when he braved the hot shot and executed a brilliant save.

The captain of United, John Marindi, was lucky to get away with a yellow card.

He handled the ball inten-tionally, but the referee only flashed a yellow card when ev-

eryone thought Marindi would be taking an early shower.

In the 80th minute, Rendani Muthambi of Poverty shot wide from close range after receiving a neat pass from Godwin Mahu-wa. As if that was not enough to stir up the fans, Muthambi caused another upset three min-utes later. He released aimlessly from outside the box, much to the disappointment of the team’s supporters.

Thabo Matuba of Poverty beats John Marindi.

Mr Steven Livhali hands over the winners’ trophy to the captain of Poverty, Tshimangadzo Masala, with Mr Rudzani Lisoga assisting in presenting the trophy.

Gumani Stars in next round of MdakaGumani Young Stars man-aged to secure a place in the last-16 stage of the Comrade Mdaka Soccer Challenge. They beat Mashau Thondoni FC 6-4 at the Bokisi village grounds on Sunday.

Young Stars did not show any respect to Mashau, despite the fact that the latter are the league champions. They deserved to win as their midfielders distrib-uted defence-splitting passes from time to time. Young Stars did not lose hope, despite the fact that they squandered two obvious scoring chances within the first 15 minutes. Ntwanano Khosa reived a neat pass from Tendani Mashau and shot wide

with the keeper already beaten.Ntsako Vukeya had his

chance as well moments there-after. He hesitated for far too long within the box until he lost possession. Young Stars finally opened their account in the 19th minute. Maxwell Mduvhadzha headed home after a corner kick that was taken by Aluwani Managa.

Referee Freddy Baloyi flashed the first yellow card in the 24th minute. Simon Shivan-da of Mashau kicked Shadrack Mamphwe off-the-ball and the referee took no time before flashing yellow. The Mashau team retaliated in the 37th min-ute. Nicky Mukona gave the ball

the final touch after a scramble within the box. Both sides used all their substitution chances in the last half.

Gumani fought the last 18 minutes with their hands tied behind their backs. Their cen-tral defender, Vongani Khosa, was given his marching orders, following a second bookable offence against Lucky Munyai. Realizing their scoring chanc-es were slim, Young Stars abandoned their positions and played defensive football for the remaining part of the game.

The winner was determined through a penalty shoot-out as the score was still 1-1 when the referee blew the final whistle.

Aluwani Managa of Gumani kicks the ball, while Ndamulelo Mutandanyi of Mashau blocks

the way.

Pupils from the Holy Rosary Catholic School in Malamulele perform marimba, a traditional musical performance, which the Vhembe arts and culture committee is committed to restoring to most of the schools.

By Phathutshedzo Luvhengo

Cultural competitions for local schoolsPrimary and secondary schools in the Vhembe region competed in a cultural com-petition for two consecutive days last week. The event took place at the Makhado Show Grounds.

On Thursday, the region's best primary schools showed their skills, while the secondary school teams had their oppor-tunity on Friday. The winning schools came from all six clus-ters in the Vhembe district, namely from Thohoyandou,

Soutpansberg, Hlanganani, Mal-amulele, Mutale and Vuwani. The venue was colourful with pupils dressed in traditional attire and proudly showcasing their culture.

This year's competition was marked by tough competition between the schools. The organ-isers also increased their efforts to include some of the activities that were left out in previous years. One of the activities is the marimba musical performances. Pupils from the Holy Rosary

Catholic School from Malamule performed this musical activity and their teacher, Mr Emmanuel Mashavha, said there had been keen interest since this art was initially introduced at the school.

The competition, which start-ed at circuit level, reached its climax last week and it will con-tinue on 27 September at Mu-sina's show grounds. The com-petition is a way of celebrating art forms such as traditional and contemporary dances, visual arts and literature. Pupils performed

various popular cul-tural dances including tshifasi, tshigombela, tshikona and marimba.

Mr Stanley Rasikh-anya, the head of the Vhembe district organ-ising committee, said the competition was meant to educate pupils about the importance of their tradition and its contrast with the west-ern culture through entertaining activities. "We realised that the culture was gradually fading, but with this competition the pride is being restored and pupils compete proud-ly," he said. He added that they would review their programme an-nually to improve the competition. "During the years we have had tourists who have trav-el from as far as Europe just to watch when our pupils are performing these cultural activities and this year too they will join us in Musina during the fi nals," said Mr Rasikhanya. The committee’s chairper-son, Mr Mavhungu Freddy Mashamba, in-sisted the competition was restoring cultural values. He said tra-ditional and cultural activities helped pre-serve cultural values. "We restore most of the activities in our school to teach our children about their tradition and to help them un-leash their art talent," he said.

The mayor of Musina, Cllr Mihloti Ramoyada, invites all community members to the Women's Month celebrations tomorrow (Saturday) at the Lesley Manyathela Stadium. During the event, the Musina Municipality will honour all women who contributed towards the attainment of democracy in the country.

The Levubu police are looking for a 32-year-old man, following the death of Mr Fransie Ravhusese (33) from Ha-Mutsha Tshidzivhani on Saturday night.

According to the police report, Mr Ravhusese was attacked in the middle of the night while he was on his way home with two women. Mr Ravhusese was returning home after a visit to a local tavern.

The suspect was allegedly hiding in the bushes along the road but greeted the women. Mr Ravhus-ese apparently asked the suspect who he was and why was he hiding instead of approaching them. The suspect then allegedly confronted Mr Ravhus-ese and accused him of being disrespectful. He then allegedly started assaulting Mr Ravhusese, while the two women tried to stop him.

The wanted suspect disappeared from the scene and Mr Ravhusese was taken home. On his way home, he was still bleeding and vomiting as a result of the injuries sustained. He passed away shortly after midnight.

The Levubu police have opened a murder case after the incident. “We are still looking for the sus-pect,” said Capt Vele of the Levubu police station.

King Toni Mphephu Ramabulana (left) and Deputy Minister Bulelani Magwanishe (right) unveil the plaque of the Tshitavhadulu Community Hall near Tshakhuma. Also in our photograph is the executive mayor of the Vhembe District Municipality, Cllr Tshitereke Matibe.

New community hall for TshitavhaduluA state-owned company, South African Forestry Company Limited (Safcol) presented a R1,1 million multi-pur-pose community hall to Tshi-tavhadulu during a ceremony last Friday.

Tshitavhadulu is a small rural village in Tshakhuma, which borders the Levubu farms and is on the southern side of the Lutanandwa River.

Mr Bulelani Magwanishe, the Deputy Minister of Public Enterprise, said during the event that the hall will be used for community and developmental meetings, school events and for learning. “We strongly applaud the efforts made by some state-owned companies such as Safcol and Eskom in reducing the unem-ployment, inequality and poverty hindering rural communities.

While Safcol was responsible for the building of the hall, Eskom has connected the electricity free of charge,” said Magwanishe.

He was also excited that, through Safcol, young pupils were being trained to manufac-ture desks and furniture, while older people were trained in basic education, hoping they will change their lives and their communities for the better.

The chief executive offi cer of Safcol, Ms Nomkhita Mona, said her company was ready to work with the communities that want-ed to work for themselves. “We found out that the Tshitavhadulu communi t i e s had an idea of starting a com-munity hall that would help the communities in

holding developmental meetings, but they did not have enough money.

We understand that the late Chief Wilson Madzivhandila had set aside some of his land,” said Mona.

Mona said her company was doing businesses in Limpopo, Mpumalanga and Kwazulu-Na-tal and hoped to invest in the communities they were doing business with. She mentioned that 1 000 school desks will be manufactured this year and rural pupils from Limpopo, Mpuma-langa and Kwazulu-Natal are set to benefi t.

Mr Daniel Lavhelelani from Tshituni-tsha-Fhasi in Nzhelele recently donated a wheelchair to an elderly woman. After he was approached to help Mrs Tshinakaho Mahlaule, who could not walk or stand on her own since November last year, Mr Lavhelelani approached several private companies, asking them for donations. After securing a sponsorship, he then donated the wheelchair to Mrs Tshinakaho. In the picture are, from left to right, Mrs Sarah Ralushai and Ms Anna Mahlaule (Mrs Tshinako’s daughters), Mrs Tshinakaho Mahlaule (seated), Mr Tshinakaho Patrick and Mr Daniel Lavhelelani.

Pupils excel in reading and writing contestAt least 17 schools in the Sout-pansberg West Circuit partic-ipated in the circuit’s curric-ulum-based reading, writing and maths competition held at Benny’s Care Sports Academy last Wednesday.

Ms Marthie Rossouw, the circuit’s curriculum advisor, said the competition was for the foundation phase (Grade R to Grade 3). “The children demon-strated confidence in a manner that left teachers from diffent schools moved,” she said. “The judges couldn’t hold back their words of encouragement for the children, as they witnessed and adjudicated the competition in great awe.”

The pupils were given prizes in the form of trophies, school

bags and other related articles as a form of encouraging them to work harder.

“We believe that a compe-tition of this nature only not benefits the learners, but the ed-ucators as well,” Rossouw said.

She mentioned that teachers spent a lot of time directing their energy towards teaching the children to read and write. She added that the competition further served as a platform to test the good work that the ed-ucators were doing in schools. “The good work of any teacher should be seen in her or his learners,” she said.

“You can’t say you are an ed-ucator when in fact your learners can neither read nor write.”

“I think the competition was

a success,” she added. “Learn-ers and teachers benefit a lot because they get exposed to other schools and can learn from each other. Learners are exposed to something bigger than just the classroom. They get the opportunity to develop their personality and become confident. This competition is part of the curriculum and it helps teachers to cover the curriculum content.”

The learners who managed to get excellent marks in the circuit leg of the competition will then compete with learners from oth-er circuits at district level. The dates are yet to be announced.

Some of the learners who participated in the curriculum-based competition are seen in this picture with educators from different schools.

Ms Marthie Rossouw (first on left) hands a trophy to a pupil, Vhutshilo Ramahanedza.

The Group 5 Venetia Underground Project was recently approached by the Limpopo Provincial Traffic Department to donate reflective vests to Eric Louw High School in Musina to be used at the pedestrian crossings. On 23 July, Group 5 handed six reflective vests to the school as part of their commitment to community safety. Group 5 also assisted the school in establishing their gardens in front of the main entrance. Pictured are members of Group 5 and the traffic department, along with learners from the school, during the handing-over ceremony. Photo supplied.

The Grade 12 learners from Louis Trichardt High School competed in a 12-hour mathematics marathon on Friday, 8 August. This was in preparation for the mock exams. The learners wish to thank Dr Anton Stroebel from the Zoutpansberg Private Hospital for his visit, pens and sweets, Limpopo Dairy for the juice and yoghurt, Roman’s Pizza for the delicious pizzas and all the parents who helped and made a contribution. Thank You!

With baby showers being the in thing in the community nowadays, friends of Phumudzo Sivhaga of Lwamondo gathered at the Dam Retreat Lodge in Maniini and gave her a befitting and special baby shower. Phumudzo is seated second from right.

Three minutes later, Gumani Ravele forced his way through the defence of Stars and unleashed a ground cutter. The ball hit the woodwork and bounced back into the field of

play.Stars opened

their account i n t he 14 th minute. Inno-cent Hlung-wani blasted i n a c l o s e -range rocket, fo l lowing a square pass by Emmanuel Kubayi. Green Dreams' Phin-dulo Ravele scored after a mix-up within the box, but All Stars took the lead again through Them-

bi Mabasa. The Stars’ fans did not have enough chance to cele-brate the goal as Green Dreams found the equalizer a little later via Edzisani Khomola. Dreams knocked on Stars’ door time and again, without success, as their strikers were unlucky. Their mid-fielder, Mulalo Nonyane, missed a fortune in the 35th minute, fol-lowing a neat pass from Collins Chauke. Stars were leading 3-2 when the referee blew the half-time whistle. Kulani Mashele sent the keeper the wrong way after receiving a pre-cooked pass from Mutshidzi Mabasa.

The second half saw both sides create some good moves from behind in their search for more goals. Green Dreams found the equalizer in the 67th minute. In-nocent Hlungwani headed home, following a corner kick that was taken by Kulani Mashele. Green Dreams relaxed after scoring the equalizer. They were severely punished for that as Stars took the lead again through Vusani Mudau in the dying minutes of the game.

Sambandou win Mulindavhathu ChallengeSambandou United Profes-sionals received R3 000, a floating trophy and a soccer kit during the prize-giving ceremony of the Mulindavha-thu Soccer Challenge held at Khubvi Tshiseluselu chief’s kraal last Saturday afternoon.

Musasenda Big Five went home with R1 200 and a soccer kit. They obtained the second position in the tournament, while the third-placed Damani Pow-erlines were presented with R1 000. Mutale Vikings (fourth), received R800.

A local traditional leader, Thovhele Vho-Mulindavhathu Randima, indicated that the fact that he was the sponsor of the tournament did not mean that he had a lot of money. “It is the love of my subjects that makes me give a portion of my family's in-come back to them,” he said. He appealed to the other traditional leaders to invest in local activ-ities, saying real leaders were passionate about the well-being of their subjects. He reiterated the fact that he will continue to sponsor the tournament in com-

OOBenny’s on top againThe players of Benny’s Care played their hearts out to beat Makikela High 4-3 on penalties in the provin-cial fi nal of the Sanlam Kay Motsepe School’s tournament at Seshego on Sunday.

The match was equally contested, but Benny’s created more opportunities. It was evident from the start of the match that Benny’s were the stronger team, with their midfi elders dishing promising passes to their front runners.

In the 10th minute, Rendani Mudau of Benny’s received a good pass from

Ernest Munyadziwa to score easily. Five minutes later, Marubini Manyane

of Benny’s broke loose,

but his attempt at goal went a little wide.Matume Malatjie of Makakile was

booked for dirty play. Although Makikela enjoyed enough

ball possession, their promising moves were stopped by the good defence of Benny’s.

The match turned out to be a bal-anced affair in the last stanza. That was infl uenced mainly by the fact that Makakile were cooling the ball down in the middle of the park, giving their opponents no chance to do as they pleased. Both side

used all their substitution chances earlier in the fi rst half.

Theo Malatjie of Makakile equalised with a volley in the 67th minute. He sent the Benny’s keeper, Gladwin Gulula, the wrong way. Benny’s were unlucky in the78th minute, when they were award-ed a free kick at the edge of the penalty box. Mutshidzi Nemaxwi was brought down on the brink of scoring.

The match ended in a 1-1 all draw and in the penalty shoot-out, Benny’s claimed victory.

Benny’s will represent Limpopo in the national championship in October.
