Dear Potential Participants,

Malaysian Palm Oil Council (MPOC) is pleased to announce

that the Palm Oil Nutrition Week 2013 will be held from 18

to 22 May 2013. This programme will include a Health and

Nutrition Road Show, PINC 2013 – an international conference

dedicated to palm nutra-cosmeceuticals, an evening forum

for medical practitioners and a nutrition conference on dietary

palm oil. The details of the events planned are as follows:

• Health and Nutrition Roadshow, 18-19 May 2013 at

1 Utama Shopping Centre, Petaling Jaya, Selangor,

Malaysia

• The 3rd Palm International Nutra-Cosmeceutical

Conference (PINC 2013), 20-21 May 2013 at One World

Hotel, Petaling Jaya, Malaysia

• EveningForumforMedicalPractitioners,21May2013

at One World Hotel, Petaling Jaya, Malaysia

• International Conference: Dietary Palm Oil in Human

Nutrition (NUTRICON 2013), 21-22 May 2013 at One

World Hotel, Petaling Jaya, Malaysia

The Nutrition Week aspires to highlight the positive role of

bioactives from palm oil including the tocotrienols, carotenoids

and phenolics that is now found in many food and personal

care products. An update on the latest scientific evidence

on the health advantages of dietary palm oil is also planned.

The target audience will not only be limited to researchers

and industry stakeholders, as was in the previous PINC

conferences, but will be expanded to a larger set of audience

including Malaysian urban households and consumers

(through the Health and Nutrition Roadshow).

These series of events planned within the Nutrition Week

will enable you to interact with key players in the fields

of nutraceuticals, cosmeceuticals and health including

manufacturers, retailers, researchers, exporters and

importers.

As such, I would strongly encourage you to actively

participate at the Palm Oil Nutrition Week. We believe that

these opportunities will also assist you to better understand

palm oil nutrition and enhance your professional skills. Again,

we take pleasure in inviting you to participate at our Palm Oil

Nutrition Week 2013 and we look forward to your support and

attendance.

Thank you.

Sincerely,

Incorporating

3rd Palm International Nutra-Cosmeceutical Conference (PINC) 2013 & International Conference: Dietary Palm Oil In Human Nutrition (NUTRICON 2013)

Introduction

After more than three decades of a concerted research program spanning 165 research projects to better understand palm oil and its components for their effect of human health, there remains significant misinformation about palm oil in human health. Misinformation has often resulted in mistrust and confusion despite a battery of credible scientific evidence that systematically exposes the outcomes from these research projects conducted at some of the most renowned biomedical centers around the world. PINC 2013 and Nutricon 2013 are therefore key scientific platforms aimed at deliberating these issues and providing the most updated and correct science based nutritional outputs to attendees. These events will host some of the best minds in human nutrition and you could hardly afford to miss these conferences. Themes are described below:

3rd Palm International Nutra-Cosmeceutical Conference(PINC)2013:20 & 21 May, 2013

Palm Tocotrienols - Science Streamed Towards Disease Prevention

Tocotrienols are natural isomers of the Vitamin E family and palm oil is currently a major source for the global nutraceutical industry. Interest in the tocotrienols has gained significant momentum during the past decade arising from scientific observations for their potential health benefits that are different from the tocopherols. Palm oil is the most important natural source of these tocotrienols and state of the art technologies for the extraction and encapsulation of palm tocotrienols is already evident in the market place. A strong research based approach has helped to elucidate the biological potency of these palm tocotrienols. These include their observed benefits against cardiovascular disease, stroke and cancer prevention, apart from their higher antioxidant potency compared to tocopherols. This module aims to capture the essence of such recent scientific findings with emphasis especially in stroke prevention and management. Several key researchers who are leaders in these fields have been lined up to deliberate the latest science and marketing potentials of palm tocotrienols. A module, not to be missed and packed with the latest outcomes that should be highly stimulating.

Palm Carotenoids - New Challenges & Opportunities

Carotenoids are abundant in crude palm oil and form the basis of a grouping of significant palm bioactives that have been made available to the food and cosmeceutical industries. Carotenoids are fat soluble compound/pigments which are naturally occurring in plants. They are characteristically reddish in color and possess high antioxidant potential. Carotenoids are well-known for their pro-vitamin A activity, beneficial effect for skin health and are involved in various biological mechanisms in humans. Red palm oil, specially processed to retain its carotene and tocotrienol content has sparked the imagination of many nutritionists and culinary experts. Under this carotenoid module, the role of red palm oil in overcoming

vitamin A deficiency in malnourished populations is revisited along with its increased demand as a natural food colorant. The latest science buzz for palm carotenes through cancer model studies, skin health, antioxidant benefits, cell-cell signaling and enhancement of immune functions are among the topics covered.

Palm Phenolics - The New Palm Nutraceutical Dynamo?

The palm fruit, long used as the source of palm oil and palm kernel oil has revealed a hidden goldmine previously washed away in its processing waste stream. Malaysian scientists have successfully characterized the palm fruit phenolics and with an innovative process technology in place the race to commercial this potent biologically active stream has been initiated. Backed by a battery of international patents and research findings from a consortium of international laboratories including those from MPOB, MIT (USA), CSIRO Australia and Brandeis University, USA the module will elucidate the biological activities of palm phenolics and their potential role in disease prevention and wellness. Data for these come from a battery of cell culture and animal studies along with the first ever human clinical trial using these palm phenolics. A module packed with leading science personalities and which should not be missed.

Update on Dietary Fats and Saturated Fatty Acids in CHD Risk Management

Dietary fats especially saturated fatty acids, long associated with coronary heart disease risk are being re-examined by nutritionists and biomedical specialists. Recent major publications have debunked the long held hypothesis that saturates are contributory risk factors for CHD. This has resulted in a string of debates and triggered a need to revisit dietary recommendations. How palm oil is featured in these new strategies will be the focus of presentations at Nutricon 2013. In addition the questions regarding food labeling viz a viz palm oil product formulations and consumer awareness would also be discussed in depth.

Palm oil and nutritional effects in humans

There is a wealth of information that traces the impact of palm oil on health outcomes including plasma lipids, lipoproteins, immune functions, diabetes and cancer. The latest scientific findings in these areas especially in humans will be highlighted by respected researchers. In addition, challenges faced by the global edible oil industry in meeting trans free formulation demands through new fat modification technologies and their nutritional outcomes are also scheduled.

Evening Forum: Tuesday, 21 May 2013

Specially tailored for medical practitioners the evening forum featuring prominent international health and nutrition speakers will be a lively debate on fats, nutraceuticals and lifestyle management including palm oil consumption aimed at wellness and longevity in the population.
