Folk Focus by Bob BerginBob Burbank: Made of Special Ingredients

The following recipe, if followedclosely, will yield a very determinedlong distance runner who hasn't yetcompleted 2 years of running but istraining for his 6th (that 's right,6th ) major marathon;Take 1, 39-year-old tennis playerwho wants to stay in shape for hisfavorite sport which he's been playing about 3 mornings per week at6 : 3 0 a . m .

    Add a suddenly crazy desire tocelebrate your 40th birthday by running in the Boston Marathon.Mix with a strong will and the determination to meet a rather toughgoal for a beginning runner and what(or whom) have you got?Bo b Bu rb a n k . n o w 4 0 , f a th e r o fthree teenagers from Yorktown ist h e a n s w e r .

He liveswith his wife Kathryn who has alsobeen dabbling in running (the sportis contagious, we know) as well ashis 16-year-old gymnast daughterand two younger teenage children.Four weeks before his 39th birthday he decided to celebrate his 40thb y r u n n i n g t h e B o s t o n M a r a t h o n .Within four weeks he was up to 50miles per week but he paid for the

overly hungry pace with an injuryand a trip to the doctor. During hisrecovery, Bob found out that to runin Boston one must qualify for theevent. Suprised. but still determined,he changed his sights, and focused,i n s t e a d , o n N e w Y o r k . Other particularly enjoyable events have beenthe Albany 18.7 mile race and theTiticus Reservoir 7 miler. (Hey Bob,what about L incoln Hal l?) New YorkCity, however, is, without a doubt,Bob's ult imate racing experience.Bob 's goa ls i n runn ing inc ludebreaking the 3 hour barrier in any ofthe long ones and, secondari ly,breaking 6 minutes per mile for alOK. Bob hopes to be under 3 hoursin Boston and has recently beentraining at faster paces during his 8t o 1 0 m i l e w o r k o u t s .

In terms of his TRRC membership.Bob is happy to be in the Clubbecause of the Club's philosophywhich he cons iders non-e l i t i s t . TheClub, he feels, tries to help all runners no matter what the ability orspeed level of its participants. No, not a sub 2:10 marathon - a Jingle JogMany arrived with flashlights andwith bel ls on their laces as i f theirjingling steps were just a part of theordinary. Others seemed to enjoythe daring nature of venturing forth.Others arrived with Christmas Spiritto jog and sing, but had no intentions of adding bells to what was designed by Nike or Adidas. However, as their psychologicallyunencumbered neighbors were making last minute preparations, thehesitant began attaching bells asthey insecurly glanced about fromthe corner of their eyes. For stillothers the challenge lay only in thethoughts of coordinating breathingwith running, singing, and readingthe bouncing words.

It did not take long to master thefiner techniques of jingle jogging. Wequick ly el iminated "J ingle Bel ls"

from our repertoire. It evoked such'moving' spiri t that (as original lyfeared by some) the pace causedthe breathing to prevail over thesinging (?). Remembering Frank...Wanting to Moid Him

When I was an Olympian, as myevent-the marathon-approached, Iprayed only to do my best, feelingtha t to hope fo r v ic to ry when therewere 42 kilometers of rough road tocover somehow presumptuous . I realize now that I was freed by this, that driving to the limit, with a fullappreciation of the odds against winning. allowed me entry into a splendid region, filled with wonderful performers at peace even as we ran. When Frank Shorter won our race inMunich, he did not throw his handsskyward at first, but clasped them tohis head, saying to himself, "My

    Page 7

God. what have I done?" . . .Frank and I sat in oUr room thenext morning. It had been an effortof will to jog three miles around thesoccer fields ... We were caught inthe melancholy that follows a well-run race deepened now by the griefso f t h e G a m e s . N e i t h e r o f u s s a i dmuch, but the feeling persisted thatsomething ought to be said . . ."You know." I said, "all this time I

thought the Olympic champion wassomebody incredibly special."Frank gave me a consoling look asthough he would have liked to prot e c t m e f r o m t h i s fi n a l d i s i l l u s i o nment. "And then you found out," hesaid, "that it was only me."Clearly since then Shorter has become more than just somebody whoruns marathons. As with Bikila, thereis some special lightness and fluidityabout the way he runs. This slendermarathoner's build, set against theenormity of his achievement, hashelped make him the king of marath-oning in America. The boom in mar-athoning s ince Munich happened

partly because of what he was andd i d .
