The 1993 TRRC Season is off and running (but of course)and soon we can put the Gore-Tex and gloves in the attic, grab a towel and water bottle, and head for the track. If allyour New Years' running resolutions have not already beendeferred to '94, and you're still working toward a PR year, then soon is the time.

Scott Abercrombie representing the 40-49 masters (seeNick Caswell's article), and Steve Calidonna with the mensopen, have been enthusiastically organizing their respectiveTRRC running teams. If you want to join these not-Just-for-speedsters give him a call. We would also love to see a give-her-a-call team (Alyssa, Susan, Margie?) or a 50's plus (Jack,Rich, Mellow-man?) Teams are to stimulate TRRCcamaraderie at selected away races. If we win (as a team)great! But the purpose is to get more members involved.

Aer Lingus is back! Free tickets for two to Ireland. Ifthis is the first you are hearing about the "tickets" or you'renot signed up yet, stop reading! Turn to the revised St.Patrick's Day race application, fill it out - mail it in - it's araffle folks, for ALL race participants (2m or lOK) with alottO'bettero chance of winning, but you still haveto be-in-it, to-win-it, but "Hey-you-never-know." BeT h e r e !

The Pump House Gang is averaging 25 runners ofevery ability but there may be room for just one more. You! If you get out of bed and get there on Saturdaymorning by 7:30 AM, we promise, The-Gang will do therest. By the time you fully wake up you'll be kickin' upyour heels into the second water stop.

Thanks for making the transition to Teatown soeasy. I think we're going to enjoy this place. Andspec/thanks to Robi (culinary delights) and Jimmy(fabulous fire) and all you meetin'-goin'-members (forbeing there). Hey, you want in - come on out - secondWednesday of every month (pin up the official TRRCcalendar and circle the date).

Please read the article on Grand Prix scoringqualiffcations, and welcome to our new advertiser andmy new friend Juan Keys (see "Magic ").

See ya' out there, Fredy Low

TRRC schedule has over 25 races. Thesuccess of these races relies heavily on thevolunteer efforts of its members. Thesevolunteer activities provide an opportunity tomeet a number of other club members andlearn something about the inner workings ofthe club, or just to enjoy the feeling thatcomes from giving something back to thesport that has been very good to most of us.If you would like to help at any of ourupcoming events, please write to VincentJuliano, Volunteer Coordinator, TRRC POBox 99, Baldwin Place, NY 10505 or call at245-3472. My Search for a Stress Buster or What's a Social Worker to Do when StressHits? by Martha Alvarez-Cullen, C.5.W.

As an urban school social worker for over 10 years, and a mother of twoyoung children I have been searching for avenues to help me get through mywork day and my family ordeals. I discovered that running was the ultimates t r e s s b u s t e r f o r m e .it al) began two years ago when I was watching the New York City Marathonon television. There my spirit was standing next to Greta Weitz andapproximatelly 2S Thousand runners, i felt their excitement, fear, hopesfor a best time, thinking about the 10th mile, 15th mile, etc. Two weekslater I entered a sports shop and purchased my first running shoes.I al5jO went to the library and researched on running techniques, how to starta r^iTilng program, diet, exercise, stretching. I also consulted with mydoctor about my physical condition and received his OK.All trie background work was done now to make the time necessary forrunning. As a school social worker I am due at work at 8.00 a.m. therefore Ineeded to find time early in the morning to actually follow up. 1 got up at5:15 am. and took that first step. It was the stars, the silence of the earlymorning, the sound of my running shoes, my breath, my thoughts and theroad It was such a peaceful feeling that I recognized It as my stress buster. My first mile was difficult although not Impossible. I walked, jogged, walked again and so on. Several months later In my brave social work spiritI entered the Mother's Day 5K Race. What a terrific lift. Go! MOM Go! I heard. Then my first 10K The ADVIL Mini-Marathon In Central Park. Runningalongside runners like Judy 5t. Hillare, Liz McCoulghlin. My finish time was1:25:04. I guess with nothing to compare It with I did great! and fealt great!whicb was rny original motivation for running. The time on my last 10K was57:18, some difference and a trememdous sense of accomplishment.Partlcuiating In races became an integral part of my running program. On abrave August morning i also participated In my first Biathlon sponsored bythe Tacomc Road Runners Club, (of which 1 am now a proud member). Itconsisted of a 3 mile race and 1/2 mile swim. Very proudly (specially since1 am not a swimmer)! finished last with a time of 58:35.The goal for a runner is to run the prestigious New York City Marathon, thisr*as become the goal for me. However as a cautious and realistic runner Iw;3nt to try half marathons first. I plan to run the Women's 1/2 marathon.13.1 miles In October '93 and If possible the granddaddy in November "94,one year short of my 40th Birthday.Running has done wonders In my life, I will keep on hitting the pavementuntil 1 m 84. After all 1 am not running to win, but to feel GOOD.

1992 Taconic Masters Cross Country

by Bob Hermesch

1992 proved to be a very fine year for our masters contingent. Our second place overall showing at theInternational X-C event in Boston back in March was a harbinger of yet further successes in store while takingon some lessons in humility along the way.

Excitement and emotion continued over the road racing season this spring and summer with an eyetowards the fall x-c competitions. From Boston's Franklin Park to New York's Van Cortlandt Park Taconic waswell represented.

We had the opportunity to compete twice in Boston. Our second trip this past November for the USATAG Nat'l. Masters 8K Champ, served as a humbling experience. After a fantastic 2nd place behind GreaterLowell RR in late March we had to settle for 8th this time around! This result was not due to a general poorteam performance (we all raced as best we could) but rather from many impressive times fi-om some very strongteams from New England and elsewhere.

At Van Cortlandt our team won top honors at the MAC 5K, MAC lOK and the RRCA Age Group X-CChamp. Our season ended with a 2nd pi finish (behind Hartford TC) at the Nat'l Masters 15K Champ. This finalevent comprising three tortuous circuits through the meadows and over the hilly and rocky dirt trails of thishistoric course at Van Cort was contested by over 10 squads.

The 1992 season has laid the blueprint for this year's races and all the battles that are yet to be won. allour masters competitors will be needed. Our depth and not any individual has been the key to Taconic'ssuccesses. Team size is not limited in many of these races. We urge all of you to participate.

The President of The United StatesT h e W h i t e H o u s e1600 Pennsylvania AvenueWashington, DC 20500

Dear Mr. President (Dear Bill):

You and I have a number of things in common; we were both recently elected to ourrespective offices, we both live and work in the White House, only mine has blue shutters, andwe both choose running as a daily diet to keep in shape.

Taconic Road Runners Club is a twenty-year old, 600 member club in the beautifulHudson Valley, Westchester County, New York. Our schedule has approximately 25 road racesof every distance, from a one miler to the 50K Sybil Ludington ultra marathon.

TRRC races are scenic, often challenging, but always well worth the time. We have anestablished reputation in the running community for well-managed events, with our own specialbrand of camaraderie.

We appreciate what your running does for "our" sport and in recognition of this, Ihereby make you an honorary member of Taconic Road Runners Club. Enclosed is your IDcard and official TRRC t-shirt and beer mug. This membership entitles you to free entry in allTaconic-sponsored races, to which you now have an open invitation.

Let me know when you're going to be in the New York area, or maybe we could justget together for a loop when I'm in Washington.

Sincerely,

Fred Loehfelm,P r e s i d e n t T R R C
