TACONIC RUNNING LIFE JULY 1993 T • R • R • C * A WOMAN'S PLACE IS IN THE RACE by Linda Geppert Once a year, women get the run of FDR Park, on the occasion of the TRRC's Mother's Day Race for Women. This year, the event celebrated its seventh anniversary, and over 100 women turned out to tour the hilly 5K course. There were plenty of guys on hand, too, to help officiate the race -- it WAS Mother's Day, after all. Unaccustomed to the heat on this bright and warm spring day, the runners struggled a bii.The winner, Sandra Natal, finished the race in 18:48, a speedy 6:03 pace. She ran very hard and was pretty thirsty when she crossed the finish line. This is the second TRRC Mother's Day race for Natal, who finished second to Lori Jorgensen in 1990. Second place this year went to Gina Gorman who completed the event in 19:02. A long-time club member and participant in TRRC events, Gina says that the Mother's Day race is one of her favorites. A mother of two, she is just getting serious about her running again. Kathleen Ford rounded out the top three, all of whom finished in under 20 minutes. There were some fine performances in the age groups as well. In the 30-39 division, Margie Katt took first place, finishing just ahead of Elizabeth D'Ottavio, winner of the 20-29 year-old division Not surprisingly, Helen Gordon, terror of the 40-49 group, finished ninth overall in 21:55. Gorman was one who found the finish a bit confusing. Our events used to finish on the road, but new park policy has dictated that we place the finsh line off the road. Gina was happy that Carmelo Roldan was around to let her know where the finish line was. As she raced toward the finish, she heard Carmelo Roldan calling "On the grass, Gina, on the grass". Just in case Roldan isn't around one time, Gina suggests that we let people know at the start of the race, where the finish line is. In the Mother-Daughter division things were., hot. The first place went to the first place overall winner, Sandra Natal and her daughter Esther Inoa, in a combined time of 43:25. Following in second place were Elizabeth and Kathleen D'Ottavio; Susan and Kellie Poet were third. Some people apparently take the Mother-Daughter competition very seriously. A couple of the volunteers overheard one of the participants berating her daughter for her performance in the race. Although a famous athlete once said "winning isn't everything, it's the only thing", there is at least one editor and co-race director who thinks that scolding a young child for not running fast enough is carrying things a bit too far. The awards and raffle were presided over by Harry Neeson with his characteristic flare and humor. In fact, it's hard to imagine a Mother's Day race without Harry at the mike. And thanks to all the volunteers and those who donated raffle prizes. Results are listed on page 28. Gina Gorman, second-place finisher, shows her typical fine running form crossing the finish line.

Summer-time and the running is... anything but easy.Everyone seems to be pushing the PR edge, and Lui'sTuesday Night Speedway is running-room-only. Taconicrace attendance is up considerably and you can alwaysfind 10 or more green-and-white-singlets at other arearaces, usually in the winners circle. But hey, isn't thisthe reason we trained all winter long.

Scott Abercrombie (April's Member of the Month)did his usual enthusiastic directing of the HermescbRealty Mile Fly, where, rumor has it, a few PRs wereregistered. The Mother's Day Race was full ofsunshine, flowers, and smiling Moms and Daughters, another beautiful job by race directors Linda Geppertand Melanie Benvenue. A job-well-done to first timedirectors Nick Caswell and Doug Miller for the NorthCounty News lOK. The Human Race on May 22ndwas a huge success because of the efforts of my co-director Kate Quinn and all the TRRCers who workedand ran. We all had our best Taconic face on that day,and I thank you for it! Congrats to Phoenix House fortheir team awards at both the North County News lOKand against the Lincoln Hall team on their 5 mile loop.Director Jim McDermott was outstanding; all hisplanning and hard work came together, although I'vehad no luck yet trying to cash the T-shirt!

July/August race offerings start off with a bang onSunday the 4th with a 2 miler and lOK run aroundKirk Lake - the Mahopac Classic - followed by theinfamous Jan Peek lOK, which is all down hill (exceptfor the first 4-1/2 miles); a week or so to catch yourbreath at the Wheaton Blast (open to all club members),then a second look at the Mahopac loop on the 24th ofJuly (the opposite direction from the 7/4 lOK); compareyour times (there will be a special award for anyonedoing both races in the same time.) The Club TeamChampionship in Central Park takes place on Sunday,July 25th - all hands on deck (5 men for the open; 3men for the masters; 3 women to score and 589 cheeringTRRCers - be there - the post race party will be gnarly, dude! August starts off with the Run/Swimathon, 8/1,at Long Pond, then maybe an away race like AsburyPark 8/14. Take the family away the following weekendbecause you're due back in town on 8/29 for theSomers lOK, which may have a course change to takeout "the hill." And mixed in there, starting Tuesdaynight, July 6th, is the Summer Track Series (see theschedule, I'm outa' breath!)

On the personal side of the road, Patty and I want tosincerely thank you for our "surprise" 25th anniversarycelebration - it was truly overwhelming. Yourfriendship is the essence of TRRC - Thanks.

2See ya' out there, Fredy Low

' TRRC Awards ScholarshipThe annual TRRC Scholarship was presented to Debbie Ruiz at senior awards

night at Mahopac High School in May. The award is for $500. The winner wasselected by the faculty of Mahopac High School.

At the March 1993 club meeting, the scholarship fund was discussed by themembership and suggestions were made regarding the funding of the scholarship, determination of recipient, eligible schools, and the number of awards that might be

made available.Funds for the scholarship have come from the general treasury in the past. This year, participants who

walked in The Human Race were encouraged to designate the TRRC Scholarship Fund as the beneficiaiy of theirpledges. Additionally, it has been suggested that a 50/50 drawing be done at meetings, with the proceeds to go tothe scholarship fund. Other efforts to augment the fund will also be considered.

Determination of the recipient has, in the past, been left to the discretion of the faculty of Mahopac HighSchool. Henceforth, candidates will be asked to submit a written response (of250 words or less) to "WhatRunning Means To Me", along with a letter of recommendation from a teacher. Entries will be submitted to theTRRC P.O. Box and reviewed by a committee of TRRC members who will select the winner(s). Pat Loehfelm,Owen McCrudden and Katy Quinn have agreed to serve on the 1993-94 committee. Other interested membersshould contact one of them if they would like to participate in the selection process.

In the past, only students of Mahopac High School have been eligible for the award. Beginning with the1994 award, students from any area schools will be eligible. To be sure we don't miss any school you would liketo have considered, please submit the name of the school to Pat, Owen or Katy.

TRRC has previously offered one $500 award annually. The membership voted to set, as a goal, toaward atleast 2-3 scholarships in the amount of $500 each in 1994. The number and amount of scholarships willbe determined each year, based on the amount of funds available. The scholarship committee invites yourfunding suggestions!!!

TRRC = Vital Part of Human RaceBy Fred Loehfelm & Katy Quinn

Balloons, banners, donuts, Pepsi, pizza, chicken and Fritos and a Super Simon Sez were all partof the Human Race Saturday, May 22. But, TRRCwas a vital part of the success of the race of almost400 runners. Thousands participated at the PepsiCoWorld Headquarters in Purchase, NY, in the first"Human Race" of Westchester County. The event wasunderwritten by nine major corporate sponsors andcoordinated by The Volunteer Center. It included a 5Krace {coordinated by TRRC!) which fielded nearly 400finishers, a 5K walk, and a festive picnic.

PepsiCo was a tremendous host. As impressedas TRRC was with PepsiCo's course and overallsupport of the event, Frank LoCastro, PepsiCo FitnessManager, was equally impressed with the performanceof the TRRC volunteers and has invited TRRC to be apart of proposed events at PepsiCo in the future.

The volunteers really showed their professionalism. Committee heads took total control of theirareas of responsibility and organized veteran androokie assistants into effective, efficient performers.Thank you to all who helped demonstrate what anasset TRRC is to The Human Race!Registration: Richie Adamski, Nancy Young, PatLoehfelm,Split Times: Tom Church, Steve Calidonna,Finish Line & Computer: Greg Diamond, SteveQuinn, Mark Cooperman, Pete Meisler, JohannaNash, Norma Seluktekin, Mark EinhornCourse Lavout & Overall Help: Ed McLaughlinWater Stops: Jim McDermottTraffic Control: Larry LenahanAwards: Harry Neeson

The support we got was legion. I was honestly touched bythe help that came forward two weeks before the race. I want tosay thank you to: JoAnna and Rich, Nancy and Greg, Pat and Fred,Denise and Donny, Norma, Dan, Gary, Rich, Jim, John, Scott,Roger, Ed, Carol and Karen, And last, but not least, many thanksto North County News for their sponsorship. They made it allp o s s i b l e .

The resul ts speak for themselves. Al though no new recordswere set, more runners completed the course this year than in^previous years. And, as there were no real ringers entered, itt r u e l y w a s a p e o p l e s ' r a c e .

Special thanks to those non-members,particularly Joan Moeller of Katonah and the groupfrom Phoenix House who volunteered their servicesat the water stations. Without your efforts, functions such as this would not be possible.

Vew Masters' Record Set at Mile Fly

Ai Swenson from the Hartford Track Clubset a new Masters' Course Record of 4:29 in theannual Mile Fly down Washington Street inPeekskill May 2nd. Swenson is the national recordholder among 45^9 year old men in the 3000meters, and he is nationally ranked in the mile andthe 5K.

Brian Kivlan from Westchester Road Runners followed Swenson with a 4:37 finish. iCivlanwas a sub-4 minute miler in college!

Taconic's Nick Caswell and BobHermesch came in 3rd and 4th, followed by MikeWilson from the Milrose Track Club. Wilson is afomier age group winner in the prestigious 5thAvenue Mile. Our Masters run against these guysand their clubs in the team competitions, and it wasterrific having them run with us at our race.

Houssine Siba from Westchester RoadRunners was the over-all winner and just missed thecourse record of 4:03 by one second. The biggestdisappointment, however, was the lack of womenparticipants. Only 9 ran. Taconic's own KathleenFord, however, ran a nice 5:29 to win.

By Scott Abercrombie

The real fiin is watching the children run the1/4 and 1/2 mile races. 8 year old Katie Hallinanwas the first female in her race with a 94 second 1/4mile. We may have to wait a few years before shecan boost the participation in the mile, but themasters team does get her father later this year!

The mile does not draw the huge throngs ofthe running community, but this year's Mile Fly wasvery exciting. Special thanks to Bob and JudyHermesch for providing virtually all of the ftinding, including the cost of the Tee shirts, awards, and allthe other incidental expenses. Your entry fee wentdirectly to the Taconic treasury!

By the way, I'm givingthought to having an open milerace on the track after this year'schildren's races on Columbus Day #•«at Depew Park in Peekskill. Thinkabout it; I'm going to ask you tobe there to help out with thechildren anyway!
