You can put the finishing kick on your Marathontraining 'cause here they come. The choice is yours:The Dutchess Classic is on September 19th; or youcould fall into the Marine Corps in mid-October; orthe really-big-show in New York City on November14th; or, if you're so inclined, run 'em all! Rumor hasit, it's been done before.

The 4th of July Mahopac Classic was a banger; a littleon the humid side but about 350 of you loved the KirkLake course change. Thanks to all the great volunteers(see separate article), Jan Peek was NOT and PierceBrennan disagreed! Wheaton's was...well a blast, andso aptly named (see article). We even made a profit -ain't we got fun. The reverse Kirk Lake course - TheMahopac lOK, was by all comments and race results, the easier direction. Great job by race director, TomChurch and, fortunately everyone who showed up to runthat day was EXTRA LARGE .

One of the bestest times (for a proud president) was theClub Team Championships in Central Park. The bestof the best (that's why it was the bestest!) were on handand ran away with the gold, silver, and bronze in theMen's Masters (field of 16 teams); the Open (15 teams)the Women's (12 teams) respectively. The post raceparty was in the TRRC tradition~TO THE MAX! Youcan be assured, or is it insured, that the Biathlon waswet and wild, or is that wild then wet? Either way, agreat job by Larry and the Lenahans and, of course, landand sea volunteers.

As we go to press, a regular contingent is shore boundwith their "Jersey Shore Girls" for the Asbury ParklOK Sun-Sand-Splash, and engineers are operating ont h e h i l l a t t h e S o m e r s l O K . N o t e i n y o u rDaytimer/Running Log, the St. John's Lake Mahopac5 Mile run, Saturday, September 11; Junior DiabetesFoundation, Saturday, September 18 (the same 5Kcourse as the Human Race at PEPSI/SUNY Purchase -see application enclosed); and, on a sad note, theYorktown (Edna Fauser Brown) lOK scheduled forSeptember 26th, and the Great Hospital (HudsonValley, formerly Peekskill) for October 10th will beamong the not-this-year, for an assortment of validreasons. However, the Philipstovm lOK on October2nd, and the Columbus Day Children's Races are allready, set, go! Have a great X-country season. Ah,F a l l !

See ya' out there, Fredy Low

From: Westchester Track ClubR E : M A S T E R S C H A L L E N G E ( 7 / 1 3 / 9 3 )

Enclosed are the results of the 1993 Masters Challenge. Congratulations to the open andwomen's team from the Taconic Road Runners Club, and the 50+ squad of the WestchesterTrack Club.

We at the Westchester Track Club want to thank you for an enjoyable evening of competition and camaraderie. The late start, which was necessitated by conflicting events at SUNY, turnedout to be a boon, given the weather, and allowed most of us to tum in time we can eventually livewith. Our only regret about the post-event festivities is that not everyone was able to attend. Forthose interested in statistics, our combined forces downed 27 pitchers of beer, and stripped cleaneach of the food platters in an average time of 56 seconds.

Special thanks to those persons whose various contributions allowed us to host this year'sevent, especially Andy Kimmerling of the Westchester Road Runner.

Finally, we were particularly pleased that Central Park Track Club joined us this year, andpromise that next time, you'll be notified of the race far enough in advance to field a full contingent.

The Masters ChallengeBy Anthony Galfano

As you can see, the Masters Challenge was a success for our cluband the other clubs who made it. (Note all the smiling faces!) As theyears have gone by and we continue the challenge, it's nice to see the samefaces and develop friendships with the other club members. It's also

interesting to see the new age group winners come and show us that we're not getting older.. .but better! This year, I watched the race develop from behind, and saw Nick Caswell, Brian Kivlan and Bob

Hermesch up with a newcomer. As it turned out, the winner from WTC is the new 40 year old on the blockBut that will not make it easy for him with all the talent in the masters division!

It was a close race this year, and I was pleased just to be able to run with such a special group. Iwasn't too pleased that at the last 200 meters I was being passed by 3 men and that I could not get myself tomove any faster. I was only hoping that my position would not be the determining factor for scoring. As ittumed out, we still have plenty of talent on Taconic, and it goes pretty deep.

The four women from Taconic who competed deserve mention: Erika Abraham, Lee Saroken,JoAnn Bertram and Katy Quinn. With the two teams that ran, we did well! Now what we need is someoneto organize our 50's and 60's divisions!!!

1993 Track Ser iesBy Anthony Galfano

This year's track series was led by Doug Miller, whose very powerful running saw himsurpass all other runners by over 500 points! Doug shows his ability from the sprints on up; but hisstrongest races were in the mile and 5,000 meters, as the scoring indicates. His 5,000 meter racewas a P.R.

Roy Arneson, who has been directing this series for about 10 years, was recovering fromsome ailments, but completed the series with 3020 points.

In the Masters Category, Mike Daley made it two years in a row as the leader, with 3150points. Bob Hermesch and the rest of the masters followed.

This year, since there was an interest on the part of the high schoolers, we did score them.Jim Fulton completed the series on the final night, scoring 3060 points and surpassing his SomersHigh Coach (Roy). The teacher should be pleased when the student surpasses him, but I'm not sosure how pleased!! Also, Roger Efraimsen continues to improve as shown by his second placefin ish .

Each year, a thank you goes to all those who put on the track series for both the children andadults. We at Taconic have been taking advantage of this program for the past several years. Theplan for next year is to have all the dates set up early enough so that you can arrange your schedulesto fit. We will try to get the information and dates out in a newsletter with more lead time.

4th OF JULY MAHOPAC CLASSICBy Fredy Low

The temporary unknown course change around Kirk Lake, rumors of hills, unfriendlyneighbors, heat and humidity didn't deter 350 or so of the sons and daughters of our country'sfounders on the 4th of July.

Mike Slinskey of the Mid-Hudson Road Runners Club hit the tape all alone at 32:29,followed by former Mahopacian Kevin Hiliery at 34:31, who now resides in Providence, R.I.;and another MHRRCer, their Prez. Matt Williams at 34: even. The women's race had TRRC'sown Alessandra Lynch at 39:10 for first place honors; then came Mahopac's MariaSchonbacher at 42:55; and, you guessed it, MHRRC's Theresa Cannon at 43:36. That's threeout of the top six for Mid-Hudson ~ Great job - See you all on 9/19.

Complete race results follow, but a few notable age group winners and running battlesmust be mentioned. Denise Lutrick won the women's 19-29 in 48:39, and Linda Slinskey (ofwinner Michael fame) edged out our own Conni Grace by one tick to take the women's 30-39in 44:24. My partner Helen Gordon absolutely ran away with 1st in the women's 40-49 withnearly a ten minute lead at 44:25. It wasn't too HHH for 14 year old Brad Hack (son of KenHack, Race Director of the Dutchess Classic), who took the men's under 15 in 44:31. And,TRRC's Chuck Creel (without his dog) took the men's 30-39 by 19 ticks at 35:35. Theone/two punch of TRRC's M/Masters team of Caswell and Hermesch took the M40-49 in 35:07and 35:39 respectively. And, no names would be worth mentioning without the inspiration tous all. Bob Regan, who at over up (72) ran under 50 (49:50) on what was a once-only, tough,hiUy, hot, humid course. Bring back the Lake Mahopac 8 miler in 1994! Thanks to all thevolunteers - your T-shirts are in the mail.

Location and details are still "to be determined," however, the date is, once again, by populardemand, the Friday night immediately after the New York City Marathon. This year, thatmeans November 19. So, mark your calendar, polish your dancing shoes and get those partyclothes out of the closet. It promises to be a night of great fun! Don't miss it. (More detailswill be available at the October club meeting at Teatown, or call Katy Quinn at 628-0648).

Lake Mahopac 10KSome people said it was harder than the Mahopac Classic. I didn't see it that way. I thought it was

faster, but by how much? There were 332 feet on the starting line on a cool July morning wondering the samething.

Race morning went smoothly. Almost too smoothly. Considering my "wait 'til the last minute" style, Iwas amazed. All of these people were arriving at Mahopac High School before the dew had even disappeared. Were they all here to run? I was hoping so. A good turnout is one of the best cures for "Race Directoritis." It'seven tougher if you are trying to keep yourself inn peak shape.

I wasn't lucky enough to have all of these people show up to compete. I was fortunate enough to havethem volunteer, though. I needed the help as much as I needed the runners.

It was almost starting time and all the volunteers had their assignments. All I needed to do was makesure the competitors found the new starting line. I picked up the bullhom and gave the ten minute warning. Nowwhat? I took another trip by the registration table to see how things were going. Slowing down. Time to givethe five minute warning and move myself and the crowd of competitors to the starting line.

All looked good. The starting line was marked. No head starts here. The timers were ready. The leadvehicle was set, and most important, the police were ready. A few simple instructions to the anxious lookingfeces and then I could give the final commands. The runners took their first step right on schedule.

My final task was to wait. Wait for the first runner. Wait for the middle of the packers. Wait for thefinal few walkers. I had no idea how long, though. I wasn't even sure who the favorite might be. Thirty-threeminutes later, the leaders came onto Mahopac's red oval. There was no one else in sight. Mathew Fully becamea repeat winner on two completely different courses. Sixty-eight seconds behind him was Tom Marx, and on histail was Tom Magee.

On the women's side, Aliysandra Lynch destroyed the field (plus most of the men's field.) In second, favoring an injury, was Kathleen Ford, and in third was the always steady Helen Gordon.

Congratulations to them and to all the age group winners. Thank you to all the volunteers, including myfellow Hash House Harriers who took care of the computer scoring, the T-shirts (one size fits all) and the thirdwater stop (even if no one wanted a beer). Thank you to the MFVFD who supplied emergency medical services, that, fortunately we didn't need to use. Added thanks to Saucony and Exceed for the promotional give-aways.And special thanks to Fred Loehfelm, who puts up with me for the twenty days between his race and this one.

I received many compliments on the day, but I never did find out what anyone thought about the course!
