Ah Sybil Once more TRRC did thelady horseperson (only in the '90s) proud; 29ultra 50Kers and 11 relay teams braved thewind, rain, even hail to complete the historicloop. Gladiator At Mudders and GruntersI've run Mudders and Grunters 4 or 5 times, and this one was the weirdest. It was pounding rain relentlessly.

run a race: semi-fat, semi-trained and deadly slow as I was, since, as the Speed Gods said, "Don' worryOkay, not "alladem." And some, way more foolish than others. I ran 5 miles to the start, sloshing down

hat brim; water standing in my sneakers; body temperature dropping.I get there, and I see there are many maniacs ready to rumble. Some of them are wearing nice clothes. I'm

Now, there are those who would criticize my sense of direction. They'd say I've run the race before andes, it's happened that my sometime partner and I have wound up eye-balling each other from

Somewhere around mile 3 1/2,1 lost my nearest fellow traveller and my way. I was lonely. I was cold. Ipossible ways. It was wrong I came back to the mortally wounded trail marker. Here

way I'd already been, with a differentOur way was through thick, cracking ice over rocks and mud. We got to the turn and encountered one more

to get in and get scored. Happily, we linked up. The last obstacle we encoun

shouted, "Someone's gonna pay for this " Owen was nowhere in sightOne of the others grabbed my hand and dragged my worn body up the hill. An hour twenty-four. I swal

    I left my clothes on the snow-ravaged lawn and sank into a hot, scented bath. Black leaves floated to the top.e c o l o r r e t u r n e d t o m y s k i n . - M u d d e r s & G r u n t e r s 1 9 9 41 . To m C h u r c h 3 3

St. Patrick's Day RacesBy John HalUnanIt's always a little difficult to say who the big winner was at theSt. Patrick's Day Road Races, sponsored by Aer Lingus. Dave Mitzi ofChappaqua could certainly claim the title, as he breezed through the lOKcourse in 33:42, outshining Scott Mosenthal (35:08) and Ken Pfaff(35:10). Bonnie Jean Regan of Mahopac, though only 14, also has alegitimate claim, as she took the women's title in 42:45. Margie Katt (42:58) and Linda Liu(44:22), both of Yorktown, rounded out the top three. But let's face it; the BIG WINNER had to be Mark Cooperman of Peekskill Mark didn't

take home any hardware, but he did walk away with THE TRIP to Ireland, thanks to Aer Lingus andthe TRRC.

The race managed to meet all of the race director's expectations: it didn't snow. Anythingafter that was gravy. Also different this year was the fact that a good group of volunteers offeredtheir services, which usually tends to be a problem when everyone wants to race/walk for the trip. Those of us who stayed around afterwards had our usual grand time, particularly when our "supplies"were reinforced (being race director for this race and for Alcohol-Free is tough ) Anyway, thanks toall who participated, and congratulations, Mark

Alcohol-Free Footrace April 10,1994By John HallinanA light rain didn't seem to slow anyone down in the Alcohol-Free 5 Miler, as Chuck Creel took tophonors in a time of 27:15. Tom Church (27:22) and Greg Diamond (27:35) weren't far behind.

Alyssa Lifrieri was the leader among the women, finishing in 31:58. Margie Katt (33:49) placedsecond, while Susan Poet (34:47) took third.Mike Gossett seemed to be the only one really running in the two-mile fun run, but he still posted aquick time of 10:58.Steve Quinn stopped by on his way back to Atlanta, and had the numbers and times on the boardalmost instantaneously, with the able assistance of Rich and Joanna Nash. The two mile fun run was evenmore efficient, as we eliminated the boards altogether and wrote the name and time down as they finishedOf course, you can do this in a smaller race, but we chose to ignore this and chalked it up to great management skills. Quinn was somewhat upset that he didn't run in the two miler, as he would have (he claims)come in second. As it turns out, each of the Quinns except for Steve (Katy, Conor and Meghan) came insecond in their respective age groups in the 5 miler.Special thanks also to Pete Meisler for his help along the course, and congrats to Peg for running inb o t h

S Y B I L L U D I N G T O NH I S T O R I C A L R U NBy Dave FarquharThis was the 16th running of the Sybil Ludington 50K. Is thisthe Taconic's oldest race? It remains the Club's only race over 8 miles(except for relays, which don't count.)It is also a race of great character, not only because of its roots inSybil's famous ride in 1777 to rouse the patriots to the invading Brits, butbecause of its single large loop over hilly country and dirt roads. (See theelevation diagram, opposite.)

This time, 30 showed up (although some showed up at the K of Crather than the new venue at the VFW) for the individual race (up somewhat from the usual 20-25) and there were13 two-person relay teams (up from 8 last year). After a very wet, windy and gruelling trip over the hills of Putnam and Kent (runners were unaware that atornado watch had been issued), 23 finishers emerged, led by Bob Sweeney in 3:38:45. Favored John Cantwell, who won the last two years in near-record times, went briefly off course early on and, evidently discouraged bythis error and the evil weather, dropped out at 22 miles. Poor fellow, he thus deprived himself of the special capdesigned to celebrate the hat-trick. Sadly, only four Taconics completed the trip: Gerry Radlaur, (2nd in3:48:35) David Farquhar, 6th in 4:22:43 (his 13th Sybil); Don Villeneuve, 8th in 4:27:38 (his 15th Sybil), andJoe Handelman, 21st in 5:55:35 (his rookie effort, and remarkable for Joe's steadiness with next to no training).Among runners not finishing was Dr. Tim Sturmer, Taconic record-holder (with 3:29:38 in 1983) who'd flown infrom St. Louis. Among Taconic long-time Sybillites missing this year from the line-up because of decrepitudeand other excuses were: Charlie Sprauer, Mike Hamilton and Tony Galfano. We hope to see them back nextyear While concentration and control of output are probably key in the 50K, speed, strength and cunning arekey in the relay. Strategies ranged from dividing the distance into two (you do the first half; I'll finish) to splitting the distance into half-mile slices. It's hard to say whether it was speed or cunning, but Nick Caswell andGary Steinel again triumphed in 3:13:13, eight minutes down from last year. By the way, that works out at avery respectable average of 6:13 per mile over the 31 miles Mention, too, a mixed team of Bill Foley andAlyssa Lifrieri in second overall with 3:21:00 a very fine 6:28 per mileThis rather special race was matched by very special help. A wonderful feast was provided by Robi andAnnette, and aid and comfort to the runners by (in alphabetical order) Jack Brennan, Tom Church, Ed Dillon, A1Dumont, Leo Gormley, Mike Hamilton, Larry Lenahan, Frank Messman, and Richard Nash. In addition, JoannaNash (registration) and Ed McLaughlin (positively ubiquitous ) were heroic. Thanks also to our prez Fred for notonly presiding but running the relay as well. The celebration was concluded appropriately enough by race director Owen McCrudden who, posy ofyellow mums for Sybil in hand, stepped onto the dais and made a moving speech about the debt we all owe Sybiljust to be there. Hooray for Sybil

Carraher & FahyAwarded TRRC ScholarshipsSix outstanding applications were received by TRRC for its annual scholarship award. Letters weresent by TRRC to 11 area high schools, soliciting applications. Because of the high caliber of all applicationsand the inability of the committe to break a deadlock and make only one award, the club has announced thattwo awards of $300 each will be given to Aislinn Fahy and Kevin Carrher. Their essays answering the query"What Does Running Mean to You?" are included below and elsewhere in this issue. We hope to also printessays by the other applicants in future editions of TRL.

What Running Means To MeBy Aislinn FahyWhen I was very little, I would wake up every morning to a door slamming and a car starting upoutside. It was so early that it would still be dark out, and this person leaving my house at such an ungodlyhour was my father, and he was going out to run. At that time, I couldn't even conceive the thought of leaving awarm bed to run in the dark, let alone believe that in a few years, that early riser would be me.I guess you could say I have my father to thank for starting me running, because when I was sevenyears old, he took me to the track to run with him. Running didn't become my true passion until I entered highschool. I had run several races before this point, but it wasn't until my freshman year on Varsity Track that Ifelt real competition and realized just how hard I could push myself My high school years were very difficultones, and because I didn't really talk much about my problems, running became a way to escape. It was theone thing in my life I knew I could control. Now I'm that midnight runner my father used to be. Whether it's early before school or very late atnight, I'll be out there, because if I don't, I'd probably go insane.l O M -

What Running Means To MeBy Kevin CarraherTo most people, running is a dull, boring sport; but running means a lot to me. Running brings aboutmy competitive nature. While in a race, 1 won't give up, and I will give it my all to win and help my team. 1also find running to be fun, because I like to keep in shape, and it gives me great satisfaction.

Running is different from other sports, because you meet and become fnends with people from otherschools. It is also different, because there are no time-outs. Down the backstretch, you can't call a time-out tocatch your breath. 1 like that, because it keeps me focussed on my running and makes me question whether ornot 1 am doing anything wrong and how 1 might correct it.Running is a big part of my life and will continue to be for a long time to come.

A Report On The Mile FlyBy Scott AbercrombieAlthough a bit under attended, this year's Peekskill Mile Fly was blessed with great weather, superbpolice support, many, many volunteers, some excellent runners, and a field of participants that had a great time. The disparity between the popularity of the marathon and the mile is beyond my comprehension, particularly since one gets to the beer fester by running shorter distances.I would like to thank Luis Guerra from Running Plus in downtown Peekskill for providing all of the T-Shirts. As you know, Louie also coaches the interval training at the Yorktown track on Tuesday nights, and Iam very pleased he was able to help us out with this race. The local McDonald's stores at Baldwin Place, theWestchester Mall and on Welcher Avenue in Peekskill also came on board as new sponsors this year. Theypurchased all of the children's awards, provided meal tickets for the police support, and gave out French fiytickets for all participants. Jose Medina from McDonald's was on hand taking pictures, watching the races, takng wth us and havng a great tme. I am very gratefu for a the support fiom the sponsors, the Cty ofPeekskill and all the volunteers.

    May next year, a 5K component will be added to boost the participation.Peekskill Mile Fly Results, April 24,1994Children's 1/2 Mile, Age 9-111 . D e v o n C u n n i n g h a m 1 12 . This Is Going To Be A Great Week-End(or "What Happens When Runners Just Can't Stop")

By Nancy Young"This is going to be a greatweek-end said Lee Saroken, asthe date for the Sybil Ludington50K approached. She had convinced me to team up with her forthe relay category in the race and Iwas slightly concerned that we had"overbooked" ourselves for thatweek-end. Previously, we hadsigned up for the GreenwichBiathlon (2.5M run, lOM bike,2.5M run) to be held on the dayafter Sybil and were consideringrunning the Rye Derby afterfinishing the biathlon. "I'm notsure about this," I said to Lee asthe week-end approached and theweather forecast predicted heavyrain for Saturday. For those ofyou who know Lee, you'll understand when I say that her enthusiasm is contagious, (not to mentionthe enthusiasm of our Sybil drivingcrew: Carol Hansen and GregDiamond) and I began to see thepotential for doing somethingdifferent and having a terrific time.

Saturday's weather waseverything predicted, and more:During one portion of the race, weran in monsoon-like conditionswhich provided the opportunity foreveryone to experience hail, blinding rain and gusting windswhich left the road strewn with treebranches. At one point, a kindlypasserby pulled up next to our vanto inform us that the NationalWeather Service had just issued asevere weather advisory for 60m.p.h. winds, hail, thunder andlightning. "Oh, really. Well, thanks," we said, and, of course, continued along the Sybil trail. (Imight mention here that we wereinvolved in a healthy duel with afour person team whom we wereplying with Dunkin Donuts thru-

out the race, and we were notwilling to lose time or position justyet. We finished the race in 4hours and 33 minutes and had agreat time.

Thanks to Owen and Davefor organizing this event, and to allthose who helped and encouragedus

The biathlon loomed next.It was intimidating for recreationalcyclists like ourselves to arrive atthe starting area along-side aerobar, Zipp wheel equipped bikeswhich weighed about as much asmy running shoes did after Sybil. We desperately searched forpeople that looked like we did andwere relieved to see a couple ofmountain bikes racked in thetransition area. "This is just forfun," Lee said, and with mywholehearted agreement, we beganthe first run.

Greg took off and we didn't see himagain until after the final run (andhis experience in the ambulance). We were pleased with our positionsafter the run, but were humbled bythose mountain bikes on the cyclingportion of the race. No one prepared us for the experience ofrunning after you've cycled 10 milesfaster than you though you could. It took what felt like 2 miles ofrunning before control of the legsreturned. Our mantra to continuewas "Look around - no one here didwhat we did yesterday."

One final note: Afterfinishing the biathlon, Lee and I didnot run the Rye Derby after all. ..but Greg did (despite his 25 m.p.h.bike crash). And, as one who hashesitated to call herself a "runner"(that's reserved for thefast people),this week-end changed my mind

A V iewBy Roy AltmanWhen I qualified for the BostonMarathon last Fall, I was delighted, andimmediately formulated a training plan totake me through the winter months, peaking in the Spring. I planned fiveraces, seven long runs, and carefulincreases in weekly mileage in order tooptimize my performance.^ But, as the worst winterJlq g in recent memory progressed, I saw races cancelled due to4 weather, long runs relegated to45 minutes on the stationary bike, and daily trudges through slippery, snowy streets. Memories of the hotsummer, feet weighed down by sweat-soaked shoes, gave way to ice clinging tothe inside of my windbreaker. I wasdisheartened and concerned that Iwouldn't be in the shape to accomplishmy goal of qualifying for next year'sBoston Marathon.I had to adjust my schedule, dowhat was possible, and content myself inthe knowledge that all other Northeast-emers in the race will have trainedthrough the same conditions. I foundthat if one looked hard enough, one couldfind some beauty in the steady pelting ofsnow that had to be endured. The winterdid have its uplifting moments: runningthrough a field of virgin snow, my dogexuberantly bounding ahead...running theback roads on a frigid starlit night, myfrosty breath the only thing disturbing thestill night air.Four races and six long runslater, the glorious Spring quickly madethe winter a distant memory. Here I was,at the starting line of the Boston Marathon, looking to trade war stories abouttraining in sub-zero temperatures;however, it seemed as if everyone Ispoke to at the start was fromCalifomia. The starting area was low-keyand well-organized. I told someone howthe experience differed from the start ofthe New York Marathon, and she exclaimed: "You mean they don't seedrunners?"

Of The Boston MarathonA half-hour before the

race, an announcement was madethat runners should head for theirpens. An orderly processionensued. The weather was nearperfect for marathoning: low 50'sand sunny, with a tail wind. Myapologies to anyone who ran NewYork last year, but I've had goodluck with weather in the threemarathons I've run. With helicopters buzzingoverhead, the countdown began. When "One minute to go" wasannounced, the runner next to mesaid "I changed my mind, I don'treally want to do this." Finally, thegun sounded, starting the race.Nobody moved. Two minuteslater, while walking, a guy near mesaid: "Well, there goes my PR."The first part of the coursetook us through quaint Bostonsuburbs lined with enthusiasticcrowds. A sign on a house

Vegetarianism -for the long runread "Vegetarianism - for the longrun," immediately followed by ahouse with a sign "Beef - RealFood." A couple of beer-swillingspectators roared, and I lookedaround to see why. Nearby was arunner wearing a cap with a poleattached to it, dangling a beer canin front of him. Through the firsthalf of the course, I tried to heedeveryone's advice and not run toofast. I concentrated on maintaining

anevenpacecareuuSvSdnghesnare of the gradual downhill. As weapproached the half-way mark, wepassed Wellesley College. The Coeds, five deep at the sidewalk, screamed as ifit was the Beatles' first coming toAmerica. With a surge of testosterone,my form straightened and pace quickened.

Up to this point, I was runningsmoothly, but the hills loomed ahead. My pace slackened a little, and I wondered how many other runners wouldgladly trade their soul for a sub-three-hour time.

The first two hills came andwent, and I realized that it is just aspeople say: the hills themselves are notthat bad (especially for someone whotrains in Northern Westchester), it's justwhere they occur in the race. Roundingthe top of Heartbreak Hill, the reality ofmy minimal training hit home, and Iknew that the last few miles would bepainfiil.

The crowd thickened and in-creased their intensity. I heard calls of"GO TACONIC'I through the din.it occurred to me that I was representingthe club and its runners whom I admire, and took it as a rallying cry. I was tootired to lift my arm in acknowledgment oftheir cries, however.

Every step beat upon my body aseach minute felt like a mile. Turning thelast comer onto Boylston street, thefinish line came into view. The pain wastremendous, the roar of the crowddeafening, and I tried to clear my mindand concentrate on the last few tenths. But one though poked through: remember to smile for the camera as you crossthe finish line.

April 14, 1994Dear Running Life,PR's Are Not AlwaysMeasured In TimeMost runners judge theirpersonal records (PR's) by beatingtheir previous times. I recently had arunning experience that set a PR forme that might never be duplicated.I am about to (in August)turn into a so-called Master, and Ihave been running for many years. Iwould call myself a strong recreational runner. I must admit to beingsomewhat undisciplined, due tofamily and business obligations.I know I have run a goodrace when I finish in the top threefemale runners. As a male runner, this might sound sexist, but believeme, the competition is always strong, and I give lots of credit to all therunners, especially the females, forwithout them, I would not be able topace myself.Getting back to my originalpremise: My daughter, who is aseven year old second grader withrunning aspirations, turned to mywife at a recent trail itin I was in andsaid, "I know that Daddy nevercomes in first, but he will always befirst in my heart." That day, Ifinished 20th out of a field of 60, butfor me, it was the best race I everhad. I guess for us somewhat betterthan the middle of the pack runners, that's as good as it gets.

I wanted to share this withyou in hope that it could be incorporated somewhere in Running Life.Best regards,

    Michael P. Londrigan
