* TACONIC RUNNING LIFE July 1994 *T* R*R*C* Lincoln Hall 5M = 1,001 Races for Joe Handelman By Katy D. Qiiinn His tee-shirt says "Run For Life," and that's certainly fitting, because TELRC's Joe Handelman has surpassed the 1,000 race mark. Undaunted by a torrential downpour, Joe ran his favorite race distance at Lincoln Hall and chalked up his 1,001st finish. (The editor apologizes for reporting last issue that the Sybil 50K was his 94th race. It should have read 294th!) As someone who has had the pleasure of running with Joe, I know that running is important to him, but certainly not his only interest. Joe finds the camaraderie of TRRC exceptional, and since he also belongs to four other road runners' clubs, we're flattered! Joe is a fre quent participant of Saturday morning runs from the pump house and it is there that I have the good fortune to talk with him as we jog. I am impressed by his life-long dedication as a runner, but equally amazed by his rich and varied interests. A frequent trophy winner in the 60+ age group these days, Joe is also excelling in other areas of his life. A graduate of Princeton University, he hopes to retire in the not too distant fiiture from the successful business he and his family operate. His family has kept him busy over the years, but his recent move to Katonah is offering him the oppportunity to relax and enjoy the musical offerings at Caramoor. (Joe also plays no less than nine musical instruments.) I look forward to many more runs with Joe, and wish him many more great races. You're an inspiration to all of us! Summertime, and a young man's thoughts turnto...Marathon Training (this "Young Man" should beall encompassing as in MANKIND to include olderyoung men and, of course, women of all ages), andthe older we get, M or F, we seem to require moreinner questions answered as to why we do this, especiily in July and August!! Having said that, theDutchess Marathon is September 18th, and even the"1/2" will hurt you a whole bunch should you decideto start "going-long" on September 1.

So, what's been happening...Teatown's 7KRumble was fiin for the few with T.C.'s own brand ofXC/trail mix; it rained on Mother's Day, which wasgood for the flowers and wet and wild for theMudders! North County News - your mug's in themail, but worth waiting for - great job Doug/Nick ~race directing is not for the meek 'n humble of heart! Thanks for the Prez Cup! Humans gathered and racedat the 2nd annual 5K at the beautiful world

headquarters of PEPSICO. Special thanks toMHRRC's Irv Miller, who literally sweat all over thekeyboard for the cause (or was that Coors?!) Joannaand Rich Nash built an ark for the Lincoln Hall loopand 125 of us jumped in and chased this bearded guywith a tall black hat and red polka dot shorts for 5 wetones; super singlet debut job. Hey, race directing isnot for ie M 'n H of H. M-P relay will have runbye, by press time - thanks Myles "one last time."Rumor has it Coach will R.D. for '95, onward andupward. The Father Mooney - Mahopac - PutnamClassic has had more name changes than Liz Taylor, but unlike Ms. T can still be found at the same time 'ndate for the past 22 years (8 A.M. July 4th) anddistance, the original crazy 8s are back. The PutnamSavings Bank as our major sponsor is back with C-TecTV and, of course, the boys from Sparkles' T-shirtsand all is well - Happy Birthday America! Is this agreat country^ or what!

Up 'N Coming: Depending on when you'rereading this, Lui's own 1st annual Jan Peek 5K is at8:30 A.M. Sunday, July 10th (the original lOK isnow held on September 4th). The NYRRC ClubTeam Championships on July 24th in Central Parkpromises to be a "hot one." You can keep cool withthe breezes off Lake Mahopac for the lOK on July30th. If running around a lake is not cool enough foryou, the Run-Dip Biathlon on August 7th should wetyour whistle. And, because we need to fill in ourschedule in August, on Sunday, the 14th, TRRC (forthe first time) presents the Phelps MemorialHospital 5K. Then, we finish off the month on the28th with the Somers 10K...and now we can get backto Marathon Training...I think!!

Racing In New York CityBy Scott Abercrombie

The NYRRC Grand Prix Series for '94 is half

over, and they still have not released any individualrace results. NYRRC has only published team pointtotals through February. Last year. West Side Y wasvery tough to beat, but this year it's Millrose.

TRRC has entered a Men's 40's, Men's 50's,and Women's Masters team in the Grand Prix, andMillrose is in first or second in each of these categories.Millrose always enters teams in our Manhattan toPeckskill Relay, and you see a lot of their runners at theJan Peek and other Taconic races.

However, our really big concern this year isscheduling, not the competition. Seven out of the 13NYRRC races conflict with Taconic races, and themajority of these conflicts are with races that are alsopart of the Taconic Grand Prix. Not good! This hascaused us to deliberately enter some NYRRC raceswith only the minimum number of runners required tos c o r e .

Anyway, the real purpose of this article is toencourage everyone to race the 5 mile Club TeamChampionship in Central Park on July 24. This onedoes not conflict with any of our races, and we will befielding teams in the male and female open, masters and50*s categories. This has become a bit of an annualritual, so we will have out club banner, a keg or two,and food for after the race. This race is part of theNYRRC Grand Prix, but it is worth 2-3 times as manypoints as the other races in the series. Don't be deterredby natural ability. Participation matters most, especially if we're going to have a good time in CentralPark. If you are not a NYRRC member, and you enteron race day, they will kill you with an unacceptablyoutrageous entry fee. So, if you need a race application, call me at 245-7813, and I will send you one.

Mother's Day 5K - A Fun Celebration!By Joanne Bertram

Many thanks to out to Melanie and Linda for yet another great job onthe Mother's Day race. They arranged perfect weather - not too hot, not toocold, just enough sun - which brought out lots of moms and a few daughters.

The best part of this race is being able to ask, "Who won?" and get theanswer without have to say, "No, I mean the first woman."

The only disappointment was that theweight of all this past winter's snow and ice didn'tflatten out the hills.

For any of you mothers or daughterswho haven't tried it, it's a perfect way to beginthis special day, so keep it in mind for next year.

The partnership of Doug Miller and Nick Caswell worked for the second time. Despite a few setbacks, the sponsorship and support of The North County News, and the special network of friends and volimteersmade the day successful.

The one setback - and the only issue that needs to be addressed - was the delay in receiving the awards. The delay was purely administrative and bureaucratic. In fact, the awards were in Yorktown on the day of therace. Little did anyone realize, the boxes containing the awards were locked away in the UPS depot on FrontStreet, a mere 300 yards away from the runners on Hanover Street. Anyway, over half of the awards have nowbeen given out. The rest will be handed out at either club meetings, at the club races in June/July, or by specialarrangement with me (e.g. collect at Louis' store. Running Plus, in Peekskill.) So, call me (914) 736-0414, andwe'll make arrangements! Congratulations to all the winners, and thank you for your patience!

Heart Rate monitoring as a training aid has recently become more common among non-elite athleteswith the avaiiability of relatively inexpensive and very accurate heart rate monitors (HRM) along withliterature and research to allow knowledgable usage. Your heart rate can be helpful for both training andracing intelligently.

The best monitors available now (starting under $100) include a transmitter that straps around yourchest and a receiver you wear on your wrist. The strap, if made just tight enough, is comfortable and doesnot interfere with running. The receiver is the piece that causes variation in price: minimally it displays justthe pulse; others include a watch and timer; higher models can memorize heart rates and interval timesat variable intervals for playback later. These monitors are actually reading your heart rate not your pulse, the latter being slightly less accurate.

What to do with these HRMs once you get one is the big question and the answer can be verydetailed, so I will start with the basics and hope to continue in further issues.

The first two measurements you need are your resting heart rate (RHR) and your maximal heart rate(MHR). The RHR is measured first thing in the morning before any activity while you are still in bed. Thiscan be done using your finger on your wrist or neck (the old fashioned way). After several morningmeasurements you should have an idea of your RHR. Upward deviations from this number on future dayswould indicate overtraining or sickness and should help you to adjust your running accordingly - such astaking a day off. Downward trends indicate improved fitness.

Next, your need the MHR. This can be estimated with the formula 220 minus your age, (i.e.:such as180 for a 40 year old.) But this is such a variable number and the necessity for an accurate measurementis such that the following methods should be tried: Run easily for 1 to 2 miles; run 1/2 mile hard; rest for30 seconds to 1 minute; run as hard as you can for 1/2 mile. Your pulse at the end is close to your MHR.Or run a mile race. Or run hard on the roads, find a long steep hill and run as hard as you can up the hill, each time noting your pulse immediatedly as you finish the run.

Once you have the MHR and RHR, you can calculate any of a number of heart rate ranges you willuse for various workouts and races. For instance, the optimal heart rate range for long, slow runs is 60-75percent of your MHR. If you have a MHR of 180 and a RHR of 40, you subtract 40 from 180 (=140), take60% of that (=84) and add back your RHR for a 60% value of 124. Similarly, 75% is 140x.75-l-40=145.There are charts available to do this calculation for you. So the range for a long, slow run would be 124-1 4 5 .

This is one of the most important ranges since most people run their long, slow runs too fast, leavingthem overtrained and unwittingiy undertrained: the long, slow runs are meant to develop certain muscularattributes (more mitochondria) and a faster tempo doesn't foster these developments. (It also takes severalweeks for the benefit of these runs to be reaiized so a iong run 1 week before a marathon is only bad(tears you down), never good-don't forget this on October 31.)

Ed McLaughlin just ran the Vermont Marathon in even splits (first half=second half) achieving a 10minute PR using his HRM to pace himself. Instead of concentrating on a certain mile per minute averagehe kept himself in a certain pulse range (85% of MHR) that is known to be best for running a goodmarathon. I used one at the Vassar Brother Hospital's 20K race and used a higher percentage of my MRHbecause it was a shorter race. Rather than keeping to a minute per mile pace, there were times when Ibacked off (even though I felt capable of a faster pace) to keep my pulse in the range I wanted. At times, while backing off, I allowed myself to lose contact with people running arounj me -a psychological barrierI had to overcome to run my best race. In the end, I had improved my mid-race position by eight places, running my best race in a while and still finishing strong and comfortable. Both Ed and I had figured outthe necessary pulse ranges by using the HRM in training. More later...

What Running Means To Me

By Rebecca Gusmano, 1994TRRC Scholarship Finalist

Runners take your mark. Get set. Bang! I hear thewind rushing past me as I sprint 800 meters to the finish line.I think of the runners around me. A voice inside my headsays, "Push yourself harder!" Amazingly, my arms pumpfaster and my legs follow through as I cross the fmish line, achieving my best time and first place. All the practice haspaid off, and I leave the track with a smile. I run for theexcitement of the race, and for the natural high achievedwhen competing with others.

As a freshman, I only thought of running as a meansto stay in shape. Initially, it was difficult to run more thantwo miles at a stretch, but as time evolved, running becamean important part of my daily routine.

Running is the perfect sport. There is always a newgoal in sight, and a new race to be run. The competitor ismyself and the race is against the clock.

Running keeps me physically and mentally fit. Itrelieves the stress of a rigorous academic and work schedule. When I run, I find it easier to put things in perspective, and indoing so, solve many of my problems. Flowers, trees, andanimals scurrying to hide, all enhance the exhilarating feelingI receive when running on a clear, sunny day. I let mythoughts wander, feel wonderful, and am glad to be alive.

Running has become the way I dream of the future, appreciate the present, and review the past. Whenever youhear the words "Runners, take your mark. . .", try to detectthe inherent joy in that moment, for each runner is about tochallenge themselves and each other.

T R R C"Joins The Human Race"

May 21ByKatyD. Quinn

"Family, Fun & Fitness" were the theme of theday as 8,000 people gathered at PepsiCo Headquartersin Purehase, NY for a 5K road race and a 5K walkknown as "The Human Race." TRRC clocked in 463finishers and set to work (with the able assistance of IrvMiller of MHRRC) scoring the race with a new (to us)scoring program. Joanna Nash, Annette Einhom Reedand Fred Loehfelm were also "key" in the computerscoring. Special thanks also go to Larry Lenahan whoinstructed rookies at the water stops; Richie Adamski,Nancy Young, Carol Hansen, and Kathleen Ford whokept up with a challenging registration, Steve Quinn, EdMcLaughlin, Rudi Einhom, and Bob Davis who managed the finish line, and Tony Galfano and Rich Nashfor other behind the scenes help. Also, praise to FrankLoCastro and Mike Moreau of PepsiCo & Pepsi for afantastic job of hosting this mamoth event!!!

TRRC saw the coffers of our scholarship fundreplenished with many pledges (specific amount was notavailable at press time), and The Volunteer Center of theUnited Way, coordinators of the event, report thataround $200,000 was raised for approximately 200 not-for-profit agencies. Thanks to all who ran, helped andcontributed to a terrific affair.

Oh, and P.S.; No surprise - TRRC cleaned upin the Team Challenge. Great running gang!

Lincoln Hall Classic - June 12, 1994By Joanna & Rich Nash

Noah Told Me We Should Build An Ark.

.or should we say, "then they ran the Lincoln HallClassic?!" The weather forecast for the day was "intermittent showers," but after awakening to booming thunderstorms, I had my doubts. Well, as the moming progressed, they were correct to an extent: there were intermittent showers. . .between the torrential downpours!

The waters parted momentarily around 9 A.M.,and the race was off. At the first mile, the lead pack hadsplit into two groups. It was somewhere between thesecond and third mile that the heavens re-opened, trying tomake up lost time for the beautiful weather of the previousweek. At this time, those of us ducks back at the finishline were beginning to envision inventing goggles withbuilt in windshield wipers to get everyone to the finish line, but our first runner, the ever-swift Dave Mitzi, was acrossthe finish line in 26:28, trying to outrun lightening andNoah's floods. Tom Church was clocked in at 27:52, andpoured the equivalent of one pint of water from eachsneaker. Steve Calidonna came in a short 10 secondsafter Tom.

On the w^omen's side, Alessandra Lynch, whoalso won the Mother's Day Race and the women's divisionof the North County News, made it across the finish line in aswift 30:51, with Alyssa Lifrieri coming in at 32:10 and

Kathleen Ford, third for the women at 33:24.Between thunderous rolls and ominous lightening bolts, the other courageous 117 runners came across the finish line,

not needing a shower for the next week or two. When it was over, we looked back and labeled it a success in spite of theweather. What could we do but laugh so hard we cried?!

The course start and finish were slightly different this year, ending in front of the visitors' center, to the enjoyment andcomfort of many.

There was a special award given to Kevin Lenahan for Outstanding Contributions in Artwork for the Taconic RoadRunners Club. He has been very helpful the in design and necessary artwork for the T-shirts used in many of TRRC's races(including this one.) There was also a special trophy presented to Tom Kieman, Recreation Director at Lincoln Hall, for theboys at Lincoln Hall who participated in the race.

We would like to express our thanks to The Daily Bagel for their major sponsorship of this race, and also GrandCentral Deli, Dynacast, and the Sports Attic for their additional sponsorships. Most of all, we would like to thank the manyvolunteers that gave their time in the rain and awful weather to make this race possible. We couldn't have done it without you

laconics Cash In At The HospitalThe Vassar Brothers Hospital 20K/5K road races put out a call

to all the fast runners and nobody came on Jime 5. Nobody exceptMid-Hudson's Olympic Marathon hopeful, Mike Slinsky, who tempo-ran to a 6 minute victory and $250 in 1:04:16. Not to be outdone,Michelle Franklin won by over 7 minutes to take the same prize with a1:15:33 on the women's side. Besides these excellent performances, itseems that prize money isn't the draw they thought it would be.

But it did draw several Taconics to the 20K for a piece of the$2300 prize money, and they withdrew plenty from the bank. Topmasters runners Nick Caswell and Lee Saroken won their divisions and$100 each. Nick ran 1:13:21, ninth place overall over the hilly 12.4mile course. Lee was the ninth woman overal l wi th a 1:36:09. Er ikaAbraham was two women back with second place masters time of1:39:48 for $75. Greg Diamond was fifth overall in a 1:12:14 and tookhome $70. Finishing one place ahead of Lee was Charlie Sprauer andjust behind her Billy Drake in his customary age group winningposition. Art Baisley and Gerard DiMaggio also took on the 20Kc o u r s e .

The new format increased the old 10K/2M distances, but keptthe simultaneous start the same. For the first 1/2 mile, including asteep 0.1 hill, the two races ran side by side. After rolling for most ofthe next 10 miles, the 20K course took a severe downhill turn for aquick finish. The 5K had a similar downhill to their finish.

Ed McLaughlin took 19th overall with a 19:09 overall in the5K, with John Nicolais in 20:48 and president Fred Loehfelm in 21:17following close behind. There was no prize money offered for the 5K,which drew 126 competitors, compared to 10 for the 20K

What Running Means To MeBy Jessica Mazzeo, 1994 TRRC Scholarship Finalist

Each day after my last class ends, I rush down thestairs to my locker and find them wailing for me. Likepuppies listening for their owner's footsteps, they anticipatemy arrival. I try not to be late, because I know how thatdisappoints them. They want to be set free; they want toescape the bondage of my tattered gym bag.

I change my clothes quickly and, with my bagslung across my shoulder, head down to the track. I sit onthe ground and pull them out. They smell of rubber andhave adapted themselves, as a chameleon, to the red colorof my high school's track. I put them on my feet and lacethem tightly. They are so excited to be performing ourdaily ritual.

After stretching for a while, 1 begin to run. Theyhelp to ease me up and down with the gel-fillings. The airsmells sweet, and the wind feels so good against my face. All is peacefiil and serene. There is no scape like this thatI know.

As I set and accomplish new goals, they accompany me. They challenge me to run longer and faster. When I run in races, I feel them stiffen slightly, They arejust as nervous as I am, However, once the gun sounds, there is no stopping us.

My sneakers are unaware of any problems that Imay have as each day passes. All they know is what I feelwhen they're with me, running, and what I feel when I run

standing & Waiting - Chapter 2By Susan Solow

As you may recall from my last article(I foolishly thought - my only article), 1 wrote about the plight ofthe support squad at the New York City Marathon. Before I goany further, let me just say, '"Tis better to stand and wait inLondon and/or Paris than to stand and wait in New York!"

As you may have guessed, (assuming you are one of thefew people left whom neither Howie nor 1 told about our trip toLondon and Paris) this article is about the recent London andPar i s Mara thons .

Our son, Andrew, spent his junior Spring semesterabroad. This means he goes to classes in London, gets to travel allover Europe, and we get to go visit him. Not a bad deal foranyone. It didn't really matter to us when we went, until wereceived a brochure f rom Marathon Tours about the LondonMarathon package. They also said the Paris Marathon was thefollowing Sunday, and for the few, very few who have tried it, itwas hectic but fun!?!

Well, to cut a long story somewhat shorter, we decided togo for it. Unfortunately, Howie's injuries made the certainty of hisrunning both events very up in the air. We had a 9 P.M. flight outof JFK, which meant we were flying overnight. As Howie said onour way to the airport Friday..."Do you realize that the next time I wake up, I'm running aM a r a t h o n ? "

The marathon was Sunday morning. We arrived inLondon on Saturday morning, and by the time we got our luggage, exchanged money, found out how to get to our hotel and got there, check in and met with Andrew, it was already afternoon. We dida little sight-seeing, but Howie did NOT want to walk. At all! 1was beginning to have my doubts about him successfully completing both or even one marathon.

Marathon Tours had the race packets with someone whowas staying at our hotel. We just called his room and he deliveredthem. There was a "kit bag" (as in "pack up your old kit bag") topack up your belongings to have for you at the finish. There was asmaller version of your race number which you adhered to the kitbag. These bags were collected at the start and were there in busesat the finish, by numt)er. Very well organized. There was a busleaving our hotel to take Howie to the starting line. Howie saidthey got there early, so the driver drove around, so they wouldn'thave to hang out waiting. The weather, by the way, was COLD.

1 stayed at the hotel, which was 1/2 block fromBuckingham Palace, which was also the finish. I saw the start onTV. (Interesting note; In the U.S. we keep track of our runningin meters, but in London, which is on the metric system, theykept announcing how the runners were doing by miles.)

Andrew and I went to the finish line (1 wasn't about tomn or job around a strange city like 1 had in New York - eventhough I'm in better shape now.) Fortunately for us, the weatherwas cold, so Howie ran in his Sporthills. (Not that many runnerswore long black pants, so it made our search much easier.) Weworried, of course, about how Howie was managing. The crowdswere friendly, nicer than New Yorkers (NO, really?!). Thecrowdcontrol was excellent, the surroundings (right outsideBuckingham Palace) beautiful. It was GREAT! We were

lucky to find Howie after the race. (It pays tohave a tall son.) He had already picked upthe previously discussed kit bag, and was given his finisher's T-shirt (available ONLY to finishers). Howie was thrilled by thewhole experience, and we enjoyed the rest of our time in London.(I won't get into that here). Next, off to Paris.. .

Steve Quinn had told Colleen Law, who lives in Paris, that we were coining and that Howie planned to run the Parismarathon. We cal led her from London and reached her on the

evening of her first run in a while. She had run a Euro DisneylOK, I think. Anyway, we met her in Paris at the race center, which was next to the Eiffel Tower, and picked up the number -NO LINES! I! There were applications for the marathon inMcDonald's (just like New York - NOT!). I was asked if I wantedto enter. I could have.. .except that I can't run 26 miles. Oh well,it's good to know that if you ever decide at the last minute to runParis, you can.

We spent some lovely time with Colleen and Mark.Howie was really psyched for this one. He felt confident, I think, and seemed relaxed. (Okay, as relaxed as you can be after runninga marathon and non-stop sight-seeing and eating and drinking.) Ihave never seen Howie this relaxed before a marathon. It was as ifthere was no pressure. He and Colleen discussed where they weremeeting - a Metro ride for her, a quick walk from the hotel forHowie and I - to the Arc d'Triomphe. I took pictures of the two ofthem before the race, each dressed in their Taconic T-shirts. Theylooked good!

Mark met Andrew and me at our hotel, and we walkedover the finish, which was right near the Arc d'Triomphe. Icertainly wasn't traveling around in a city where they don't speakEnglish!

We stood next to a fence in front of a booth that soldfood. We watched. The weather here was beaut i fu l and warm.It rained slightly during the marathon, but Howie and Colleendidn't mind. They ran together for half the race, sight-seeing allthe time. Howie enjoyed being cheered in French. Enthusiasmand encouragement don't know language barriers. We had notrouble finding them. We took more pictures, drank champagneand had a great time.

The marathons were wonderful. The trip was great, and I will stand and wait for my runner anywhere he chooses torun.. .but London and Paris ain't bad!
