D e a r A U R / S C A R D / A P D R / A 3 CR 2 M e m b e r :

I would like to invite you to attend the 44th Annual Meeting of the Association of University

Radiologists (AUR) in Birmingham, AL, in April 17-21, 1996. The meeting will be held at the Sheraton

Hotel, which has outstanding spacious facilities and is only minutes away from the airport. Birmingham is

delightful in April, and many local activities will center around Southern ambiance and charm• Local

arrangements for the meeting are being made by Robert Stanley, MD. The meeting will allow you an

opportunity to enjoy excellent scientific and educational programs in a convenient facility and to discover

Birmingham's heritage.

The meeting begins with scientific sessions and panels on Thursday, April 18, which will be followed by

a reception and dinner at the Birmingham Museum of Art on Thursday evening. This will be followed on

Friday, April 19, by a reception and dinner at the beautiful Birmingham Civil Rights Museum, which is

located near the 16th Avenue Baptist Church (of civil rights fame). The Fifth Annual Film Bowl will be held

at the ThursdaY lunch, with finals on Saturday, April 20. The AUWSCARD/APDR Program Director's

Symposium will be held on Saturday, along with three special-focus sessions on preparing for the year 2001.

The AUR Supports the enhancement of teaching and research by young scholars in the specialty of

radiology. In conjunction with Picker International, Inc., the Faculty Academic Development Program for 40

selected participants will be offered for the third year, again under the direction of Bruce Hillman, MD.

Other highlights of the annual meeting include 11 scientifiC sessions; a research symposium on digital breast

imaging under the direction of Laurie L. Fajardo, MD; and presentation of the Whitley, Stauffer, AUR

Memorial, and General Electric Radiology Research Academic Fellowship awards. I talso has become our

tradition to highlight the annual banquet on Saturday night, when gold medals will be awarded to two

outsianding leaders in academic radiology.

The AUR remains the only real "voice" of academic radiology; organizational issues and goals to

further enhance our position will be the subject of plenary sessions at the meeting. We sincerely invite

your active participation in the meeting, including your thoughts and input as academic medicine adapts

to the economic changes of a managed care environment.

Please join us in April for another outstanding AUR/SCARD/APDR/A3CR 2 annual meeting. I look

forward to seeing you in Birmingham in April. Best wishes for a healthy and productive new year.

Wilbur L. Smith, MD

President, A UR
