FROM THE PASTORR

Craig can be seen every Sunday carrying bags of donat-ed food to the Food Pantry, organizing the parish giving so that others can have nutritious meals. Again, in the name of the parish family I want to thank Craig (and also those volunteers who show up on Tuesday morn-ings to staff the parish Food Pantry). More importantly, God notices your kindness and devotion to this minis-try, and He is not outdone in generosity. As we look forward to the future, it is my hope to devel-op a new Social Concerns Committee that can help us continue these charitable endeavors and perhaps even develop some new projects in which we might become involved. Perhaps the formation of this new Committee could be a great project for January when we can set out a calendar for the New Year. If you are interested in becoming part of this new Social Concerns Commit-tee, please let me or a parish staff person know. We will set a date “after the holidays” to pull together this renewed and revamped ministry, one certainly closely connected to the heart of Christ Himself and deeply rooted in our traditions and sensibilities as Roman Cath-olics, members of the largest social service organization in the world! Stay tuned for more information! This weekend we join with the Church throughout the world in celebrating the Solemnity of Christ the King, the culmination of the entire liturgical year. As a nation that came to birth in a desire to throw off the authority of a king, this is an image that perhaps does not speak to us as readily today as it may have in past times. But Christ is a different type of King: His crown is thorns, His throne is a cross, and His authority is one born of love and service. His subjects are not enslaved under the yoke of His Kingship, but rather are set free under the yoke of His love (for His yoke is easy, His burden light). Next weekend we begin a new year with our celebration of Advent: join us next Saturday evening at the 5 p.m. Mass when we will bless our Advent Wreath. There are so many things to celebrate, we do so with much hope. Let us enjoy one another, our parish fami-ly, united in the joy of a King reigning over hearts and bestowing upon His people the gift of peace.

In His love,

Dear Parish Family, A few days ago we celebrated a wonderful holiday, a time to recognize our blessings and cultivate a spirit of gratitude for all that we have been given. Most of us probably sat around a table on that day with more food than we or those at table with us could possibly eat. The abundance with which we have been blessed is great, the harvest is plenty, and our prayers need to be rooted in a deep sense of thanksgiving to the God who gives us so much. At this time of year, our grati-tude often leads us to an awareness and concern for others who do not share in such a great abundance. I wanted to thank all of you who donated turkeys and other types of food for the needy in our community and beyond. This is a beautiful (and crucial) aspect of our gratitude. And, with Christmas around the corner, many of us will continue to be aware of those in need and our desire to share from our own abundance. At this time of year, food pantries and soup kitchens are usually overflowing with all manner of food to share with the hungry and needy. This year once again our parish will also participate in the Giving Tree (organized by the St. Paul Sisterhood No Longer Strangers Ministry), and we know our parish family will respond once again to the needs of others. Unfor-tunately, however, once January hits, most of us have a tendency to forget how blessed we are and to become less mindful of the needs of the hungry and poor. Yet most people who are in need often are in need all year long! So, in this season of good will, it seemed to be a good time to reflect on our consciousness of those God is calling us to notice and help all year long. During this past year, several of our parishioners who have been the foundation of the parish social concerns outreach, have retired. I want to mention two in partic-ular: Terry Carlson and Eileen Wimberger. Each of them in their own way have been tireless in their dedi-cation to the needy, and we are so grateful for the many ways they have organized and coordinated our parish outreach to others. In the name of our parish family, I wanted to thank these two women for all of their love and the considerable energy they have ex-pended to follow the invitation and command of Christ to serve. I am sure the Lord will continue to bless them for their dedication and hard work. Of course it is also important to thank all those who worked with them, and those who donated to the various projects they helped the parish to undertake. In this regard I would like to mention one more person by name: Craig Stephen (who hopefully is not retiring!).

OUR LADY OF GUADALUPE E

BOOK CLUBB

NEXT BOOK FOR ST PAUL BOOK CLUB!!! COME AND JOIN our parish Book Club. The next book we will be reading is “Ordinary Grace " by William Kent Kreger. On the surface, "Ordinary Grace" is the story of the murder of a beautiful young woman, a beloved daughter and sister. At heart, it's the story of what that tragedy does to a boy, his fami-ly, and ultimately the fabric of the small town in which he lives. Told from Frank's perspective forty years after that fateful sum-mer, it is a moving account of a boy standing at the door of his young manhood, trying to understand a world that seems to be falling apart around him. It is an unforgettable novel about dis-covering the terrible price of wisdom and the enduring grace of God.

At our next meeting we will discuss the entire book on Tuesday, December 4th at 7:30 pm in the School Library

“Treat the earth as if your life depends upon it”

Best wishes to you and your loved ones for a peaceful and joyous Thanksgiving. As we reflect on all our blessings this Thanksgiving let us be thankful for all the beauty and resources God has given us in our environment.

The Beauty of Nature O God, we thank you for this earth, our home;

For the wide sky and the blessed sun, For the salt sea and the running water,

For the everlasting hills And the never-resting winds, For trees and the common grass underfoot.

We thank you for our senses By which we hear the songs of birds,

And see the splendor of the summer fields, And taste of the autumn fruits,

And rejoice in the feel of the snow, And smell the breath of the spring.

Grant us a heart wide open to all this beauty; And save our souls from being so blind

That we pass unseeing when even the common thorn bush Is aflame with your glory,

O God our creator, Who lives and reigns forever and ever.

* * * Please take notice of the following important legislation currently in the NJ Courts:

Pain Capable Unborn Child Protection Act, Bill #s A-3452 and S2026 would protect babies from late-term abortion (20 weeks, or 5 months, and beyond). Medical research shows that a baby in the womb can feel pain at 20 weeks. Currently, in New Jersey, there are no restrictions and abortions are legally performed in all three trimesters. Contact NJ legislators and urge them to Vote YES on A-3452 and S-2026.

NJ Assisted Suicide Bill, A1504/S1072, would legalize physician-assisted suicide in the State of NJ. Help is needed to defeat this bill:

Erosion of the right to life leads to erosion of other human rights – particularly conscience rights and religious liberty – and adversely affects health care for disabled and terminally ill people.

Contact NJ legislators and urge them to Vote NO on A1504 and S1072.
