This involves defining entry criteria to the specialty, supervising the recruitment process, defining the curriculum for the two phases of the training programme - the scientific Part 1 and the Clinical Part 2, visiting and accrediting teaching institutions and setting and conducting twice yearly national competitive summative examinations in both parts ofthe syllabus. The College awards medals in both the first and second examinations to the best candidate but only if that candidate passes on the first attempt and obtains honours marks in each ofthe four integral subsections of the examination and is regarded by the Examination Board as outstanding. Dr Ahamad came- to the UK from her native Trinidad with excellent academic references and was recruited into a Training Registrar (Resident) post in Clinical (Radiation Oncology) at the Christie Hospital in Manchester UK in 1997 following competitive interview. She followed the Manchester Victoria University Institute of Cancer Studies RCR accredited training programme prior to moving to the MD Anderson Hospital in Texas USA. In 1998 she passed the Part 1 examination in Radiation Oncology of the RCR and because of her overall excellent performance was awarded the Frank Doyle Medal for the most outstanding candidate. ).' . In 2000 she passed the Part 2 examination in Radiation Oncology for the RCR and because of her overall excellent performance was awarded the Rohan Williams medal for the most outstanding candidate. She was elected to the Fellowship of the Royal College of Radiologists in November 2000 following her success in the Part 2 exam. She is the only Radiation Oncologist to have won both medals since the present format of examination was established more than 25 years ago.
