Few were surprised when Omnix, the leading IT system integrator and Autodesks main Authorized Dealer for more than 14 years, arranged a Technical Seminar at the Marriott Hotel, marking the launch of Autodesk 2007 products with a special focus on the new Engineering Software AutoCAD 2007, Architectural Desktop and 3D Viz. Thats because the 100+ engineers and architects who attended the seminar and others in the industry

Not only did we showcase Autodesk 2007, our specialists gave detailed presentations and d e m o n s t r a t e d product features. You can get a sense of how the industry counts on us by the simple fact that

we received many requests asking us to get into the Services Business aspect in the industry and introduce

  • Qatar Gas II works closely with Korea as part of their 13.5 Billion Dollar project to build 57 ships for transportation of LNG to different countries. It goes with out saying that a massive project like this needs state of the art technological solutions. We are re-ally glad that our Om-nix has had a hand in providing a dedicated Cimage Document Management System for them.

Our relationship with Cimage has spanned 14 years. Satisfac-tion in our product offering and service is what led Qatar Gas II to look to us for a brand new Electronic Document Management System connecting a central Server located in Ras Laffan to 4 remote lo-cations - 3 Shipping Building indus-tries in Geoje Island, South Korea and one at a remote site in the UK.

Our Mr Roy Pascal, Mr. Shony Rappai

and Mr. Lijo Antony established the systems in South Korea and the UK during the period 2005-2006. Once the systems were established weve

kept on working to ex-pand Cimage modules with various new ap-plications developed to suit Qatar Gas chang-ing business needs. Thats not all. Our people also trained all the System Admin-istrators, Document Controllers, Secretar-ies, Site Inspectors and Site Leads at the sites and the system is currently being re-motely supported by our team.

Our SMC Qatar has scored a major breakthrough by designing, supply-ing, installing, and commissioning digital radio studios and a fully solid state stereo FM radio transmitter for QBS Radio. These digital studios are the rst of their kind to be installed and embedded in the country. Since providing total solutions is a quality that runs in the SIIL family, not only are we getting the studios & trans-mitter up and running, but we are also training their people.

For the Techies among us. We equipped control rooms of Studio 1 to 6 and upgraded from an analogue

system to on-air digital continuity, tted out the Music Studio with a state of the art music recording mix-er and editing systems, connected the two master control rooms using underground bre optics which en-ables them to communicate, trans-mit, exibly operate and control the system!

At the center of our Earth lies a super-dense core that is larger than the planet Mars! This core, made up of two distinct layers, has a liquid outer layer and a solid inner core. The inner core, experts say, is made up of metallic iron-nickel alloy which is about 5 times as thick and dense as the rock we walk on at the surface! But there it is; thats what lies deep within our planet. Thats what helps hold together all that is outside. Thats what gives it strength.

The beginning of a new year gives us a great opportunity as individuals and as a company to stop and take a look within; to sort of take a personal inventory. What really lies at our core? What gives us strength from within? What powers us, sets us apart? What makes us who we are?

Just as individuals each of us have been blessed with special talents and capabilities, as an organization too, we have our own distinctive strengths. These talents/strengths are enduring and unique and they form the qualities that draw others to us. Heres a truth; an individuals or organizations greatest room for growth will always be found in the areas of their greatest strength.

What unique qualities do we believe lie deep within Salam? World class management experts will tell us that it is this knowledge of our uniqueness which formulates our positioning.

At Salam we come from a heritage that was built by a discerning visionary with an entrepreneurial spirit. And that gives us a priceless legacy. It places the qualities of discernment and the capacity to make things happen, deep within our core. It is those core qualities that make others come to us, prefer us, choose us. We have the discernment to make things happen.

Those of us who love poetry and philosophy will no doubt recognize the distinguishing voice of the great poet Ralph Waldo Emerson in one of his famous quotes when he said, What lies behind us and what lies before us are small matters compared to what lies within us.

So, at the beginning of this new year lets honour those who came before us and extend our legacy of discernment and capability to those who will come after us, and celebrate what lies at our core.

    Hello again!

Its good to be talking to you and meeting you out here. My warm wishes for a wonderful 2007! With each new year most of us nd ourselves on the threshold of making resolutions we hope to keep in the 365 days ahead.

Interestingly, the tradition of making new year resolutions has been traced back to the early Babylonians, who held lavish celebrations for the new year. History says the Babylonians most popular new year resolution was to return borrowed farm equipment! Well, our resolutions are sure to be different. But since we are on the topic of resolutions I thought Ill share a few tips that can help us stick to our decisions, be they resolutions made concerning our work lives at Salam or our personal lives at home.

Review last years resolution if we made one. Have we succeeded, if no, why not?

Set our GoalsMaintain clear focus. Lets ask ourselves if we really want the change.

Dont let the cup spill overDont create too many resolutions at a time.

Let it be for a year not a dayNew year is the time to plan for the entire year. So lets not stick to our resolution for a day or two alone.

Acknowledge the price, and decide to pay itAny worthwhile achievement requires sacrice, risk, effort and perseverance. So dont overlook the fact that our resolutions will cost us time, energy and effort.

This is going to be an exciting year for us, who form the large and dynamic SIIL family. This year will bring many tools our way, which will help us go beyond our achievements in the past years.

So, the best of wishes to each and every one of you for a winning year ahead! Lets be strong and go for our goal! 8

development over approximately 21,000 m2 of land. It will have 3-levels of basement parking, a 4-storey high end shopping centre and 12-storey executive and highly equipped ofce blocks above it.

Mr. Issa Abu Issa, explained: The Gate will represent a unique, ultra-modern mixed

use development with a combination of commercial, retail and entertainment facilities. He added:

The Gate is primed to be the number one destination for leading retail brand names and franchises that will revolutionalise the shopping and entertainment scene in the city. The full complex is expected to be operational by early 2007.

HUGOThe HUGO brand combines creativity and individuality. It offers self-condent men and women

a collection to express their own style. HUGO is unconventional and avant-garde a fashion dened not by age group, but by attitude.

Hugo Boss has been one of our brands and weve been giving it a home

in Qatar, Oman and Al Ain in the UAE for over 15 years! Having started small, the brand has regionally grown steadily under our patronage. We opened the very rst dedicated boutique for Boss Orange recently at The Mall. Our future plans for Boss include the following; to have a Hugo Boss shop located at The Gate once the project is complete, and to have Boss Black and Boss Orange boutiques set up by 2008 at The Pearl of Qatar. August 2007 will see us open a Boss Black boutique at the City Center in Muscat, Oman.

The history of Hugo Boss dates back to 1923 Germany. Having gained a strong foothold in the

apparel market over a few decades, in 1953 Hugo Boss released its rst suit design for menswear. In 1993, 70 years after its founding, Hugo Boss launched its rst fragrance, and created a division which has since grown to be an important part of the company.

Hugo Boss offers the world classy and elegant clothing, shoes, fragrances and accessories. HUGO BOSS is represented in the fashion market by the BOSS and HUGO brands.

These brand collections and their fashion lines are aimed at various target groups, creating a brand world of extraordinary fashion diversity at a constantly high level of quality. The BOSS Black, BOSS Selection, BOSS Orange and BOSS Green lines as well as the accompanying accessory collections are all part of the core BOSS brand.

BOSS GreenThe functional sportswear in the BOSS Green line offers athletic and fashion-oriented men a collection

that promises optimum performance from both a sports and fashion perspective.

BOSS BlackThe womenswear and menswear collections of the BOSS Black line offer wide-ranging styles. The

and was very impressed by your company,

    the

    Your Salam Magazine has alr

    the major forces

    of success in your organiza

in respect to all contributions and perso

    their ability to reduce major

    issues and problems

and circumvent challenges. All this prove

information. I consider our Newsletter to be a

worthwhile effort, especially in the face of the

ever changing business environment around us.

As rightly pointed out by Mr. Joseph S

our SSS Qatar, it is of utmost impo

    rtance

for us to develop and retain our human capital

since it plays a vital role in sustainable business

Being a big organization, a communicatio

    tates an

environment for us to share our experiences and

    to learn from each other.

Id like to make a suggestion. Why not think

about having an exclusive intranet, creating

another space in a different medium, for us

to share our work experiences and knowledge

across the group? This will help us reinforce

our capacity to remain a learning organi

Hi Basheer! Thanks for your response and for your valued

    comments and suggestion.

Theres good news! A simple intranet site for

SIIL has already been designed and is currently

being compiled for publication on the internal

company server. The categories that are fea-

tured will include: a General Information section,

SIIL related forms, External Forms, The Salam

    Experience, Policies and Procedures, Performance

Management System (PMS), Circulars & Internal

    Memos, Telephone Directory, Strategic Planning,

and Logo/Identity Library. Eventually, when the

intranet is fully up and running, all Salam Inter-

national family members with access to the local

servers will be able to enter and use the intranet.

Look out for more news on this important devel-

opment soon. For now, local users in Qatar will

have access to this new communication medium

when it goes live. As for the rest of our SIIL

users outside Qatar, phase two is being worked

on right now to bring you guys on board soon

    too. The Editor

    Dear Mr. Hussam Abu Issa,

  • Mukesh Vasandani

Transition and change is always a challenging process, though if one looks at the fundamental idea of change, its actually quite simple. To change is simple. Maintaining change is the difcult part.

After having been in hospitality for many years, I took the decision to create change in my life, and maintain it by moving on to a new challenge. All of you have gone through a transformation period, in which Salam has been evolving, through a stage of chrysalis, and even now, continually evolving. Its an exciting time, one of growth and opportunity, new ideas, new horizons, and new goals. It was one of the key factors in my keen desire to be part of this process, and help in this transformation.

Being new to Salam International, I have spent the past few months looking at the large diversication of our company, and see enormous talent, where people have built their careers, lives, and Salam to what it is today. I look forward to being part of a key driver in the HR & Training process that continues to balance the demands of several different roles: business partner, internal consultant, operational and administrative expert and both employee and employer advocate.

Through my experience in hospitality, one thing that has always stuck with me is the value of training and development. As the saying goes, Train, Train, Train, and then Train again! One of the core beliefs held here in Salam is the belief that all employees have the right tools and resources to do the job correctly, and the ability and means to further develop themselves. As stated by Mr. Issa Abu Issa; Salam is a breathing, living organism that receives its breath from all of us. We are the company, the brand ambassadors, and the drivers of the future.

I look forward to working together to create innovative and valued trainings, which will help us all in delivering The Salam Experience. Knowledge is power, and as the great B.B, King once said, The beautiful thing about learning is that no one can take it away from you.

Ross NicholasTo do or not to do.... (not to be confused with Shakespeares ....to be or not to be....) became a dening experience for my family when we began considering joining Salam.

I have always been extremely aware of not falling into any comfort zone and have always practiced the philosophy of maintaining a degree of nervous tension in a professional environment as I believe that this will ensure that nothing is taken for granted and it prevents complacency from creeping in... Why then, when I was approached by Salam for the rst time did I decline?

In fact, upon reection, I was extremely happy at my previous company, I had initiated a series of changes that I would have liked to see through and yet I started to think about the Salam opportunity seriously.

The turning point in my decision to consider joining Salam came about upon my rst meeting with Mr Bassam Abu Issa in Dubai. Having nally managed to synchronize our diaries and actually meet face to face, I was pleasantly surprised by the genuine wish of the company to achieve signicant changes in the way it operated its retail outlets.

The second push over the edge in terms of my decision to join Salam

came about when I met the rest of the Salam Board and Mr Issa in Doha.

Achieving corporate change in any company is only possible if the people in that company are willing to initiate and embrace change ..... and I had met people who were willing to embrace corporate change and who had recognized the need and urgency for change. So there I was ying back to Riyadh from Doha staring out of the airplane window with visions of a new Salam logo oating in front of my eyes ..... imagining the new Salam Wa Store as the initiator of a new era in Salams history and asking myself if I wanted to be an integral part of this change process.

The answer was unequivocally YES! This was NEW, EXCITING, CHALLENGING and FORWARD THINKING, who would not want to be a part of it...and best of all the PEOPLE, were sincere in their willingness to initiate changes.

So, why did I join Salam? The answer was the people, the corporate philosophy and the potential to be part of something unique, signicant and ground breaking. Its not often that one nds the opportunity where the corporate mission is not just lip service but is in fact a living thing I had found a company that wanted to live and breathe its corporate mission and I wanted to be a part of it.

Like an infant, our corporate goals will be born, evolve, grow up and mature and we will go through growing pains and teenage difculties on the way but this is the very thing that creates the excitement for our future vision because through our actions and commitment we could model and determine the nature, character and future of our business.

Prioritize actions ( a) Do Now ( b) Do Soon (c) Do later

Treat all appointments like the dentist (Postponing normally means it turns into a big job)

Implement a quiet hour with no interruptions Never touch a piece of paper more than once-

work on it and send it off Group appointments together and x time limits Always seek precise information from others Put time limits on meetings and stick to them

In order to identify the most useful timesavers you must rst identify your time stealers.

Rank the following in order of importance to you:

Too many phone calls Too much to read Too many interruptions Inadequate equipment Too many meetings Indecisive bosses Too much paper work Incompetent colleagues Too few staff I cant say no!

  • ConnectingGreetings to all, from us lot at SIIL IT Department!

You want to know what weve been up to? A whole lot. But heres just a few highlights. We set up the new SIIL Data Center at our Bin Omran premises. This nerve center, is what helps keep all IT functions in the SIIL system running smoothly.

We also completed a Multi-protocol Label Switching project (which sounds highly technical we know!), but what it does is that it enables our SIIL family companies to connect with each other and work as if they are located within the same room! Here are the folk who are virtually connected now as if their tables are right next to each other ~ Bin Omran, Salam Tower, STS Town Center, Stream, and Alu Nasa, Salam

Industries & Gulf Industries in the Industrial Area.

We are running a shared Internet and security implementation service that is currently providing secured Internet services to all SIIL sites (250+ users) through our Data Center. This solution is reducing our connectivity/service costs due to the sharing of infrastructure in addition to providing state of the art security. At IT we believe that good things must be shared so we have a plan in the pipeline to eventually offer this service to our Dubai Users, Vendors, Customers etc, so that they too can benet from the IT advances that we are enjoying.

Want to talk to us? Just give us a buzz.

When an organization is as diverse and as dynamic as ours, there are thousands upon thousands of functions that go on day after day. Things we hardly give thought to. Sometimes just taking a peek behind the scenes brings out interesting facts. Ever thought about the Salam warehouse? Weve got two of them and gigantic ones at that. Our warehouses have six (6) sections: Perfumery & Cosmetics, Photogra-phy, Luggage, Household, Bed & Bath, and Red Bull. They currently store about 1 million items and we have 23 col-leagues working at the 2 warehouses. Our warehouses re-ceive about 500 consignments per year. Thats a whole lot of goods.

Top notch luxury magazine Society Dubai makes a bold statement on its cover. It features three sharply dressed men and says These three men persuade you to part with millions of dirhams every year . A readers immediate reaction? Who are these guys? Movie Moghuls? Tax department? Maosi?!

Look closely. One of the faces belongs to one of our own. Steven Giedymin, our Visual Merchandiser for Salam Stores Dubai was one of three leading merchandisers interviewed for a six page feature in the opulent, hip magazine. The captivating spread titled The Conversation took a unique trajectory, to uncover the secrets behind the persuasive art of visual merchandising. To permit readers a peek at the masters behind the mind game of luxury retail, they chose three of the citys best. Saks Fifth Avenue, Villa Moda and our Salam Stores led their list and so the conversation began.

A fashion expert posed questions and the three men answered. (We wish we could share the entire

feature with you. Unfortunately we can only give you a glance at it due to space constraints.) Ever wondered how a particular set of clothes and accessories ended up on a mannequin posing a certain type of look? Listen to our Steven. You assume things just appear there. There are so many details the consumers take for granted. But for us, we have to take note of every tiny detail, right down to the minute one. Think about emptying a room and then lling it up again, with xtures and mannequins and lighting and wall coverings and furniture; its many layers.

About being part of a store in the caliber of Salam, Steven says, When you are working with a company that has more than one store, consistency is everything. You have to voice the message the company represents. It can go from blueprints of the store to should the mannequins wear earrings? The details are vast. The more open you are to understanding the operational aspects of how it all integrates, the smoother the store runs. It is a learned profession.

  • A visit to Dubai by interior design students from Virginia Commonwealth University - Qatar, which includes attendance of the Index Exhibition, a visit to Salam Internationals Modern Decoration Company (MDC) and the Ibn Battuta Mall counts for a worthy education. The trip gave an opportunity to the students to experience some of the most innovative interior design concepts ever seen in the region. At MDC, the students were shown the design details of furniture, adaptation of new colour trends and explanations of design solutions.

A young team of volunteers joined Reach Out to Asia (ROTA) on a mission to Lebanon. They delivered stationery and school bags as a gesture of friendship and support to their counterparts in Lebanon. Students from schools that were damaged or disrupted due to recent events in Lebanon received these gifts from ROTA team members and a young Qatari student volunteer group that included Aya Abu Issa.

Concerning the gesture, the Lebanese Minister of Higher Education said Reach out to Asia was an appropriate name given to an organization reaching from the heart of Qatar to the farthest regions of Asia, spreading seeds of goodness to those in need. The school supplies were bought with the funds donated during the Atfalouna Our Children

campaign and money raised by schools throughout Qatar.

As part of the one year awareness campaign handled jointly by the Organ Donation Department at Hamad Medical Corporation and SIIL, various road shows were arranged at many public places in Qatar. The road show includes booths setup in various venues around Doha - with informational yers and gift items. They were run by operational staff and nurses ready and willing to provide information in various languages to interested parties. The rst stop of the road show was

the City Center Mall on October 30 31, 2006. The second stop of the road show was Royal Plaza on November 16 17, 2006 near the Information Desk

A mouse looked through the crack in the wall to see the farmer and his wife open a package. What food might this contain? The mouse wondered - he was devastated to discover it was a mousetrap. Retreating to the farmyard, the mouse proclaimed the warning. There is a mousetrap in the house! There is a mousetrap in the house.! The chicken clucked and scratched, raised her head and said, Mr. Mouse, I can tell this is a grave concern to you, but it is of no consequence to me. I cannot be bothered by it. The mouse turned to the sheep and told him, There is a mousetrap in the house! There is a mousetrap in the house! The sheep sympathized, but said, I am so very sorry, Mr. Mouse, but there is nothing I can do about it but pray. Be assured you are in my prayers.

The mouse turned to the cow and said There is a mousetrap in the house! There is a mousetrap in the house! The cow said, Wow, Mr. Mouse. Im sorry for you, but its no skin off my nose. So, the mouse returned to the house, head down and dejected, to face the farmers mousetrap alone. That very night a sound was heard throughout the house -- like the sound of a mousetrap catching its prey. The farmers wife rushed to see what was caught. In the darkness, she did not see it was a venomous snake whose tail the trap had caught. The snake bit the farmers wife. The farmer rushed her to the hospital, and she returned home with a fever. Everyone knows you treat a fever with fresh chicken soup, so the farmer took his hatchet to the farmyard for the soups main ingredient.

But his wifes sickness continued, so friends and neighbors came to sit with her around the clock. To feed them, the farmer butchered the sheep. The farmers wife did not get well; she died. So many people came for her funeral; the farmer had the cow slaughtered to provide enough meat for all of them. The mouse looked upon it all from his crack in the wall with great sadness.

So, the next time you hear someone is facing a problem and think it doesnt concern you, remember -- when one of us is threatened, we are all at risk. We are all involved in this journey called life. We must keep an eye out for one another and make an extra effort to encourage one another. REMEMBER EACH OF US IS A VITAL THREAD IN ANOTHER PERSONS TAPESTRY; OUR LIVES ARE WOVEN TOGETHER FOR A REASON.

A group of alumni, highly established in their careers, got together to visit their old university professor. Conversation soon turned into complaints about stress at work and in life.

Offering his guests coffee , the professor went to the kitchen and returned with a large pot of coffee and an assortment of cups - porcelain, plastic, glass, crystal, some plain looking, some expensive, some exquisite, telling them to help themselves to the coffee. When all the students had a cup of coffee in hand, the professor said:

If you noticed, all the nice looking expensive cups were taken up, leaving behind the plain and cheap ones. While it is normal for you to want only the best for yourselves, that is the source of your problems and stress. Be assured that the cup itself adds no quality to the coffee. In most cases it is

just more expensive and in some cases even hides what we drink.

What all of you really wanted was coffee, not the cup, but you consciously went for the best cups. And then you began eyeing each others cups. Now consider this. Life is the coffee; the jobs, money and position in society are the cups. They are just tools to hold and contain life, and the type of cup we have does not dene, nor change the quality of life we live.

Sometimes, by concentrating only on the cup, we fail to enjoy the coffee God has provided us.

God brews the coffee, not the cups..Enjoy your Coffee!!

    Welcome to the IT age!!

One day, there was a blind man sitting on the steps of a building with a hat by his feet and a sign that read: I am blind, please help.

A creative publicist was walking by and stopped to observe. He saw that the blind man had only a few coins in his hat. He dropped in more coins and, without asking for permission, took the sign and rewrote it. He returned the sign to the blind man and left. That afternoon the publicist

returned to the blind man and noticed that his hat was full of bills and coins.

The blind man recognized his footsteps and asked if it was he who had written his sign and wanted to know what he had written on it.

The publicist responded: Nothing that was not true. I just wrote the message a little differently. He smiled and went on his way.

The new sign read : Today

is Spring and I cannot see

it. Sometimes we need to change

our strategy. If we always do what weve always done, well always get what weve always gotten.

And remember too, sometimes its not WHAT we say, its HOW we say it !!!!
