In 606 BC, the invading armies o Babylon

had surrounded Jerusalem. They occupied all

o the territory and their armies now camped in

and around the allen cities, including a place called Anathoth.

Jeremiah was in prison or predicting the ultimate all o the nation and

her captivity or the next 70 years. In this impossible situation, a cousin

o the prophet visited him in

jail with a real estate proposal.

    Obviously, the man wanted to

    turn worthless property into

cash to care or his own survival, but who would be oolish enough to

buy occupied territory under these conditions?

As we know, Jeremiah did, and his Real Estate Counselor was none

other than God Himsel. The entire story is ound in chapter thirty-two

o Jeremiah. He paid the money and careully secured the legal evidence

o purchase, knowing ull well that he would never own that land in his

    lietime.

Why did he do it? Well, rst because God told him to. It is always

wisest and best to obey God, even when His command runs counter to

human reason. Secondly, Jeremiah wanted to demonstrate his aith in

Israels restoration. He had predicted it, now he was investing in it. But

Jeremiah did not even have a amily that could one day look orward

to occupying that land when the restoration happened so will he ever

    recover his investment?

Someday, perhaps not too many years hence, the King is coming to

set up the Kingdom He has promised. I suspect when he does, that land

deed will be ound and I expect I will be visiting Jeremiah someday

in peaceul little Anathoth where he will be enjoying the retirement

investment he made so long ago.

Have you made any investments in the eternal Kingdom recently? Its

going to be a long retirement.

When Jesus was preaching He requently

reerred to books. Paul admonished Timothy,

    . . . bring . . . the books. . . . We have a tremendous reservoir o

excellent Christian books to assist us to know the greatest o all

    books, the Bible.

My sister, Rose, and I accompanied our mother to the local

library where we used a childs wagon to get Moms twenty books

and our ew books home. She encouraged us to read broadly.

Later, when I started a Christian bookstore in Arrowhead

Christian Center, in Binghamton, New York, Dr. Paul Gris

suggested that we mention, on our daily radio broadcast, that

people could donate good used Christian books to our lending

library. We were overwhelmed with ten thousand books. Many

people came to borrow and to bring books. This started in me a

great love or good Christian books.Despite two house res that destroyed all o our books, my

wie, Joyce, and I have ound wonderul riends in good books to

enrich our lives as we have built up another good library.

Source o Light has been involved with good books in Jamaican

Christian bookstores. Through our World-Wide Bible Institute

and World-Wide LIT programs, our Bible studies are based on

    excellent Christian books.

The best o all books to read is the Bible. Proverbs 4:20-22

    promises . . . attend to my words . . . for they are life . . . and they

    are health. . . .

SLM Haiti who would havethought or dreamed o its existenceor its impact. For my thoughts are

not your thoughts, neither are your

ways my ways, saith the LORD.

Haiti, a land that in 1804 wasdedicated to Satan or 200years in ransom or its release rom

the oppressive French colonists, wasa land ar rom the Lord and ar rom

    hope.

SLM started impacting Haiti in the1990s. By 2003, lessons weresent by bus to ve cities throughoutthe country, resulting in the

enrollment o about 400 students and

    65 salvation decisions. On December

13, 2003, the Arthur Spalding amily,

contrary to the tide o unrest in the

country, moved to Haiti with the goal

o making the discipleship ministry a

ministry o the local church in Haiti.

Independence Day, January 1,2004, marked the bicentennial othe country and a potential turning

point o the nation. The president,

Aristide, had called in voodoo priests

rom Arica to rededicate the country

    to Satan. Christian churches across

the land were calling upon God to

deliver the land rom the hands o

    Satan. Ater much discussion and

arguing about the voodoo ceremony, the priests returned to Aristide and

said they could not do it, because they

could not agree and the spirits were

    not with them.

The country was in a state o unrestand instability. The United Statesembassy evacuated all personnel,

    locked down all transportation, and

    President Aristide fed the country

as a nationalist army marched on

the capital to take control o power.

    The marines helped maintain order

during this time until the United

    Nations landed a peacekeeping orce

    and Haiti established an interim

    government lasting until 2006. Please

note that this new government was

in prayer beore each meeting and

read rom the scriptures on national

    television, giving constant reerence

to the nations need to rely on God.

That same year, hurricanes emptiedthousands o cubic meters owater on the country o Haiti, literally

washing out towns and carrying them

around. Despite the turmoil in the

country, SLM was able to open a new

    discipleship ministry in Cap Haitian

    on the northern coast.

Haiti had a dicult period in 2005and movement was very limited.Gangs which previously were limited

    to ghetto

    sections began

    c o n t r o l l i n g

    major routes

    with arms they

    gained duringthe time o

    unrest. During

this time the expansion o SLM was

limited, but it was a great time to work

in the local church. Attendance grew

rom 25 to highs o over 200. This

was a testing point or the church, as

    there was

    not a body

    o mature

    bel ievers

    who were

    able to

    m i n i s t e r

    to all the

new attendees and their children.SLM materials were used with the

    young believers, grounding them in

the basics o salvation and Christian

living. It is this group o young

people who today are key leaders in

    the church.

Rene Prval became the presidento Haiti or the second time in2006. During that year, I was almost

kidnapped as I was delivering SLM

    lessons. God merciully brought me

through the snare in the road. SLM

    discipleship in the north grew.

The ollowing year was to be ayear o great steps. The UnitedNations took the green light and went

    ater gang leaders, scattering them

    throughout the country and hunting

    them down.

The cost o ood and uel nearlydoubled in 2008. The nancialbase, coupled with unemployment,

produced ood riots on a national level.

Blame was laid on the prime ministerand he was removed. For Source o

Light Haiti, God continues to give

the increase. In 2008, we distributed

41,698 Bible study lessons. Our work

this past year was directed to a greater

number o young children, using the

    Explorers and Overcomers series.

Please pray about what God mighthave you do to meet the manyneeds o 2009.

There it was; the church we were

looking or. Once again our GPS,

    co-named Mizzy, pointed us in

the right direction. We had arrived!

    Prior to this weekend engagement

    in Andover, Maine, we enjoyed

this beautiul state or a week,

    with its breathtaking scenery, the

cool, blue waters o its magnicent

lakes, and we were always on the

    lookout or the ever-present moose

    lumbering across the highway.

As we pulled into the parking

lot o Calvary Bible Church, we

    noticed the parsonage attached to

the let o the church, but on the

    right . . . mailboxes? Why would a

church want a bunch o mailboxes?

Each one had a name; i.e., Julia,

    Rebecca, Drew, etc. Our curiosity

    was peaked!

    The fagwas up

    on Codys

    box. What

    or? Later

    on, when

    questioning

    the pastors wie, she shared

with us that this was the churchs

    Mailbox Club. When a lesson

is ready to be checked, up goes

the red fag. What an exciting

    by Rosina Brandon

incentive or children to study the

    Word o God!

    Calvary Bible Church has been

    a Village Missions church since

the early 1990s. It began in a

    schoolhouse on October 5, 1964,

where they met until building theirnew acility several years later,

now seen at the present location.

    Compassion and love or the

    people? Thats exactly what we

    saw in Pastor Kenneth Wagsta

and his wie, Kathy. Believing that

a little child shall lead them, the

prayer o the Wagstas and their

church amily is to reach amilies

o the community or Christ by

    teaching their children through

    varied avenues o ministry, such

    as the Bible correspondence

    lessons, Awana Club,

    and summer camp at

    Camp Good News. It

    was a privilege to hand

    out award certicates

    to deserving students

    the Sunday we were

    there. May the Lord

    expand His kingdom through this

dedicated pastor and his wie in

their desire to see Him work in

hearts, as they encourage others to

    raise the fag.

In 2009, Helping Hands Braille Ministry o Grand Rapids, Michigan, willjoin Source o Light Ministries International in providing more tools to helpthe blind person participate in his/her local church and in helping ulfll theGreat Commission. Since 1999, Helping Hands has provided, ree o charge,or at cost, devotional guides, such as Our Daily Bread and Keys or Kids, hymnals, Sunday school materials, and a variety o Christian books requestedby blind people.

Current inormation suggests that 95% o blind people in the United

States do not regularly attend church and o the fve percent who do, many areunable to participate in the lie o their church or in the wider opportunity omaking disciples. With the addition o Helping Hands equipment, volunteertranscribers and prooreaders, and those additional people we hope totrain, we hope to make it more possible than ever or the blind Christian toparticipate in his local church and to grow in grace and in the knowledge othe Lord Jesus Christ through Christian books and SLM Bible courses.

Now that you are inormed, there are two things you can do. First, youcan pray or this expanded outreach to blind people in the United Statesand overseas. You can look into becoming a Braille transcriber. Trainingis available and Helping Hands can get you started. For more inormationcontact [email protected].

    Can you imagine yoursel directly

involved in a Gospel outreach that is reaping a

harvest o souls rom around the world. Such

had always been my dream and perhaps it

has been yours. Source o Light International has allowed me to see the

ulllment o that dream and it can do that or you as well.

Just imagine, your inbox is lled with last nights E-mails giving

greetings and reports rom a dozen countries. You recognize the names

o people you have never met, but through their letters you have built

a warm and loving relationship with them. You know their joys, their

burdens, and the names o their children. You have their picture on the

wall. As you read o the wonderul works o God taking place through

their ministry, your own heart is lled with joy a neighbor or whom

you were praying came to Christ. The babys ever broke during the night

as believers prayed. Work on the village church is going orward, but

there is persecution. You eel like they are your amily as you have born

their burdens, needs, and joys beore the Lord. You are actually a part o

their lives and the work you will do rom your oce today will help and

    strengthen them. Just imagine!

Just imagine sitting at your desk in the Madison Discipleship School

and opening the pile o envelopes to nd the correspondence lesson rom

a student whose name you know. Last month, as you graded his lesson and

prayed, you jotted a short note to encourage him to respond to the truth

he has now learned. You immediately go to the response orm. YES!He has given his lie over to Christ. You ring the bell loudly. Your co-

workers and those in adjacent oces join you and the angels in Heaven

    in rejoicing. Just imagine?

    Imagine yoursel joining

in the Madison oce, but around the

world. You will be looking or reports

o answers to the prayers you prayed

    yesterday as well.

    Ater prayer, imagine the work

    assignment or the day printing

    18,000 lessons or the Philippines.

First, you will set up a cart to move

printed lessons to the collator that

stretches or ty eet in a series o

chains, belts, cutters, and staplers that nally brings the product to a

conveyor belt where exactly twenty-ve lesson books, bound, cut, andcompleted will move orward to your coworker at the other end. He takes

every pile o twenty ve and shrink wraps them, so that they will arrive

at their destination clean and dry. When a cage has been lled, someone

will move them to shipping to be boxed and prepared to be loaded on a

truck, that will take it to a container, that will be placed on a ship, that

will nally deliver the Word o Lie to waiting evangelists and workers in

Manila. Those lessons will go to Bilibid Maximum Security Prison where

thousands have come to Christ, and others will go to churches, schools,

hospitals, and quietly many will nd their way into the Muslim south,

where hungry hearts will meet the God o redemption or the rst time.

And imagine all that, becauseyou were there to make it happen. No

wonder at the end o the day, your heart is happy and rejoicing and you

know the ulllment o being a part o something o eternal importance.

    Just imagine.

I could easily go on.Imagine working on the cutting edge o moderntechnology, converting powerul Bible lessons into a orm where they are

available on the world-wide web or recording them in audio or the

seventy percent o the world that is unctionally illiterate, loading them

into a small device that is solar-powered and able to bring Gods message

to a tribe or village ar out in the jungle or years to come.

It was the summer o 1958when I, as a 13-year-old, had theprivilege o working with Source oLight men in constructing the new80 X 80 steel building that wouldhouse the headquarters and printshop on the recently donatedacreage outside o Madison,

    Georgia.I remember shoveling sand

into the two-bag cement mixer aswe poured the slab. I rememberCharles Gilmore using a transitto line up each o the ooters thatwould support the steel girders.Bolts to hold the vertical girderswere welded to the tops o a rebarcage, which was buried in theconcrete. Every girder lined upwhen assembly began!

It was discovered that thereestanding girders would bendwith the weight o an adult when

the time came to bolt the roogirder to the vertical post. This13-year-old boy, however, was just light enough to climb up theladder and insert that starting boltand screw on the nut.

Over the years that ollowed,God has blessed SLM with muchgrowth, and that original buildinghas been added to and now iscontained within a much largersteel building. God is continuing tobless and now the time has come

His work at SLM is with the Alternative Media Department, reaching

those with impaired vision as well as with the sighted. Ben Watson, the

director o this department, was instrumental in getting Stewart here.

Even though he had marketing and journalism training, Stewart had

decided that he wanted to go to seminary. Ben asked him what was

more important: scholastic credentials or ministry. Thank the Lord,

    Stewart chose ministry!

David Mosbey hails rom Tell City, Indiana.

He is a graduate o Washington Bible College.

    He has worked

    with several

    ministries that

use SLM materials. David was saved at

the age o eleven and has been involved

    in various Christian works since

graduation rom high school. He was a

missionary or a time in inner-city New

York City with Hope Bible Mission.

    by Billie Will

    17

David was encouraged by Ray Walker, one o our sta members, to

come by and see the ministry. He came and agreed to stay i he could

be used. He has been a big help in several areas switchboard,

housing, Madison Discipleship School, and the Print Shop.

Our third New Kid on the Block is the amily o Phil, Vera, and

Daniel Winder. The Winders come rom Ft

Pierce, Florida. They have been here several

times in the last several years with work groups.

It almost seems like they have been a part o

this ministry or a long time, not just a ew

    months.

In Florida, the Winders owned and

    operated a landscaping business.

Both Phil and Vera were involved

in the business and they also were

    home schooling their son, Daniel,

who is now sixteen. Their church

    was very mission-minded and this

    emphasis, along with the many

mission work teams they took part in, impressed on their mind the call

to missions. It seemed only natural that God would call them here to

    Source o Light.

In talking with the Winders, Phil mentioned that when they cameup to a seminar or new candidates two years ago, they were very

discouraged. They basically elt that SLM was not the way the Lord

was leading them. Then something that Ben Watson said completely

turned things around. This comment, coupled with the book, Knowing

Gods Will, were the two actors that pointed the Winders in our

direction. We are happy to have them on board at last.

Phil is in training or the job o Director o Operations. As the name

implies, this job covers many areas. Vera is concentrating on home

schooling or Daniel and she also is working in Madison to supplement

    their support.

Greg and Chris Miller are our next New Kids

on the Block. They met in Pennsylvania and

they also met Jesus Christ there and this

changed their direction in lie. They went to

Brazil, South America, as missionaries or

thirty years. The Lord used them in several ministries: Amazon Valley

    Institute, Abaetetuba Conerence

    Center and Bible Institute o

Belem, as well as in church

planting and teaching Bible in the

    public schools.

    Ater thirty years in discipleship

type ministries, and due to some

health issues, they elt they should look or a ministry state side. They

were encouraged to come by SLM and see the ministry. They were

impressed with the scope o the work and with the enthusiasm o the

    sta.

God led and their sending mission, CrossWorld, has agreed to

second them to Source o Light. Chris says this is their Golden Years

Challenge. Greg will act as the European director o SLM and oversee

WWBI (World Wide Bible Institute). He will also be involved with

the Alternative Media ministry reaching the blind and vision impaired.

Chris will be answering letters and grading lessons rom our Spanish-

speaking students. The Millers have our grown children and eightgrandchildren and they are starting a new and challenging career with

    SLM.

We welcome all these New Kids on the Block to our sta.

All o these olks need monthly support. Please remember to pray or

them and or this need. They have agreed to come on to SLM to begin

I grew up in a semi-Christian home, aithully taken to church by my motherand then by both parents when my ather

was saved in middle age. We had a godlypastor who aithully proclaimed the Wordo God week by week. What a relie it wasto discover that I had an advocate, a lawyer to plead my sinners case beore

a perect God, one who knew no sin and had died on Calvarys Cross or me.All I had to do was realize that I was a sinner, coness my sins, and He wasaithul and just to orgive me.

I am grateul that I have not experienced the great sins o this world. Idont have those lingering doubts or ears or addictions that others coness.Even so, I was just as lost and in need o a Savior.

The Lord brought me under conviction that He wanted all o my lie and so Iyielded to His direction to prepare or service in the Muslim world. At ColumbiaBible College, He directed to the feld o Pakistan, and we prepared to teachin a Bible institute there. That Bible school never materialized and the Lordredirected us to a pastorate in Mansfeld, Ohio. During that time, we wereinvited to develop the missions department o Appalachian Bible College.

Later, He asked us to become the Associate Director o Berean Missionand manage their ourteen felds around the world. Then, He directed me tobecome the Executive Director o the Association o North American Missions.During that time, we moved to Florida, where my wie could care or her agedmother. We were members o a Bible church in Sarasota or several years

where I was an associate pastor, in charge o Biblical counseling.

Now we are retired, living in Beckley, West Virginia, and members oFaith Baptist Church. My wie is in charge o the Childrens Church ministryand I administer the Faith Missions budget, at this time o $102,000. Asopportunity aords, we give seminars on Understanding Islam and theBiblical Worldview.

Our our children are all around us and we attend church together. God issuch a wonderul Savior and proound Friend. We love to serve HIM.
