The Other Side is published once a year by Columbus North Publications and printed by Pentzer Printing in Columbus, Ind. Each work is the property of the author or artist and may not be reproduced without his/her permission. The views represented in the magazine are not necessarily those of The Other Side, Colum-bus North Publications, BCSC, North High School, or Pentzer Printing.

Twenty-five written works, 20 photographs and eight pieces of art make up the first volume of Columbus North’s literary arts

magazine. This was a year of firsts, beginnings, the start of something. This year, everything changed. The staff was set. We knew what we wanted but didn’t quite know how to do it. Slowly, we developed a size, 7.75” then the title “The Other Side”, and theme of this magazine; “Beginnings”.

But, “The Other Side” is not just the name of North’s literary arts magazine. It is the other side of the person walking down the hall laughing with friends. It is the other side of the learning environment the creative side. Students have another side to them; it’s finding that side that can pose difficulties. This literary arts magazine is a place for the people who have found their other side to showcase their accomplishments.

The 2009 theme is “Beginnings.” We would like to kick-off this magazine with an amazing issue, filled with lots of amazing things from some pretty amazing people. “Beginnings” also signifies the beginning of an era; the beginning of something that will hopefully continue into the future.

A literary arts magazine is a place for artists and writers to publish their creative works. A place for them to showcase what they have done. On behalf of the 2009 staff, thank you for reading and enjoy.

They tell me I should forget about you,They tell me I shouldn’t cry. They tell me memories will slip away, and the tears as time goes by.They tell me I’ll find another oneto take the place of you. They say he’ll be even better nowand he’ll do the things you do.They say it’s all over now, they told me I would forget. They said things would get better soon, but I haven’t forgot yet. They say it’s okay to feel the hurt, and in time I’d find it true, I guess that time hasn’t come quite yet, because I’m still in love with you.by Misty Settle

“Balderdash”Marissa McEwan

I walk down the halls of my high school, and all I see are people who are afraid:afraid of touching someone else’s heartafraid of feeling things that don’t seem rightafraid of crying when others don’t cryafraid of loving but not being lovedafraid of ridicule from their so-called friendsafraid of failing when perfection is required afraid of reaching out to another’s souland mostly afraid of growing upbecause it’s hard to think of being on your own

and having responsibilities that mommy can’t help you with. But it’s amazing how scared you getwhen you just look at all these kidsand you can see how lost they are. It’s like they all go through the motionsand their lives are really just learned actions. It’s just school. Sleep. Repeat. Repeat.Nothing more and nothing less. I walk down the halls of my high school and all I see is loss.

This is the cover of a notebook which has many words pasted on

it. Some are together for a reason, others are there randomly. It is a

collection of ideas to make people think.

I took this picture on a trail in Germany that lead to a castle. I found myself more fascinated by the nature surrounding the structure than the structure itself.

The trees around you whisperAll the things you want to hear. They murmur pretty lies,And carry away your fears.

The deceitful whispers surround you,A blanket of lie on top of lie.Through the night, the wind blows strong,But with sunrise, starts to die.

The flurry of lies cease.Caught offguard, you’re left exposed. No blanket to keep you warm,The truth left undisclosed.

The dreaded fears creep back, you gradually forget who you are,Feeling vulnerable and alone,no company but deep scars.

As light gives way to dark,Night returns yet again. The whispers come flowing backAs the trees pick up their wind.

You embrace the night,Welcome the two-faced wind,Knowing all the while, the cycle never ends.by Destinie Aull

A tear falls as the rain invites itself inside. In my heart there are so many things I am trying to hide.Disordered habits formed outside emotions into a lie.My stomach will no longer growl to keep me dry.I need to show the realto set me on the path to finally heal.I will stand in my internal rain.Flourish in my own pain.I will let you stand by my sideand I promise to no longer hide.by Emily Pedigo

It’s thirty-two degrees outsideI’m left with nowhere else to hidebut bare my skin to insecurity

I’ve frozen since you’ve been goneI sleep with all the lights onLost belief in lost philosophy

All false pretenses stricken Colors of the world we live inFall away and leave me vulnerable

It’s thirty-two degrees outsideI can’t lie, my hands are tiedIt’s become such that we’ll all pay a cost

You set fire to what was my soulWith total desire and loss of control It’s hard to think of my love’s labors lost

It’s thirty-two degrees outsideFrigid air keeps me aliveYou’ve given up and I’m vulnerable

The temperature at which water freezesI don’t want to hear your reasonsWe’ve wasted time that made my heart too full

It’s thirty-two degrees outsideI can’t lie, my hands are tiedI know you leave me vulnerable.by Elizabeth Clerkin

Who taught you that expression?Did you learn it from nature?Did God want streams running down your moun-tains?Do you miss them? Cause I miss them as wellIt’s a strange thing that’s not pretty whatsoeverOh yeahYou lost a friend

Here’s that dreaded expressionI should have expected it againI missed curfew for the forth time in a rowI’m really not a bad kidDon’t you get itI don’t like it hereGet your judgmental disapproval away from meOh yeahI’m probably moving out

Who taught you that expression?Did you learn it from your momma?Did we tell you to smirk? When things aren’t in orbit around your spaceOr is that your own creation? Can you show me that again?I couldn’t catch on to what you were portrayingOh yeahThere’s something caught in your eye

Who taught you that expression?

Did you learn it from your poppa?Did someone tell you to scowl and show your teeth?Or did you dig that up from your inner angers?Don’t show me that againI can’t recognize you when you do that gestureOh yeahI forgot. She cheated on you.

I see you in that expressionI didn’t get the same message I’ve been seeing all those secret dazeIt tears me up to see you like thatCan you give me some assurance That you’ll be okay. Cause I careYou won’t look into my gazeOh yeahI’m leaving you

I caught you in that expressionDid you learn it from your sista?Did she show you that you can be truly happy?Show that to everyone you knowThen they’ll ask you what’s upand you won’t have to saycause they’ll know they’ll say“Oh yeahYou’re in love.” by Sarah Peters

Moments of happiness you can seeA grin beaming away shines from me

But this I can assure is just a maskHiding the pains of my eveyday task

No one knows the real true meThey only know what I let them see

It’s difficult to see what my thoughts really areWhat I shor is not the truth by far

It’s difficult to see what I am thinkingIt’s not obvious like waving or winking

I hide my emotions from all those who seeThis is really the way, the way it must be

‘Cause if you see deep into my mindYou’ll see some monsters that you’ll find

These monsters lurk beneath my skinThey bring pain and fear, all kept within

I can’t let visions of this mess occur‘Cause if you see my thoughts - you’ll see her!

The woman I’ve kept hidden insideThe woman I really much continue to hide

Hidden for years upon yearsHiding my pain and tears

The lies forever buried awayLies forever, hidden must stay

The inner self in a clever disguise The only weakness is her broken eyes

I really must say without a doubtThese are some words I really must shoutby Nicole Wildman

“Deserted Island”Molly Rinehart

Pure and crisp right from the packBut pure and crisp no moreI gaze upon the white t-shirt That lays upon my floor

This t-shirt tells a storyOf many different tonesA story both of sighs and gaspsOf laughter and of moans

Worn alone with biceps bare – A Greaser with raised fistReminds me of my younger yearsAnd the girls I should have kissed

Worn underneath a sweatshirtMore layers make me sweatAfter practice it’s peeled offMy shirt is yellow – soaking wet

Worn underneath a collarTie and coat complete the dealMy shirt soaks up the insecurityI’m not allowed to feel

Eagerly but humblyMy shirt jumps from its drawerReady to do the thankless taskOf being worn once more

The fabric’s nothing specialOnly torn and stained with dirtBut there’s a sacred kind of honorIn this tight old white t-shirt

It took way too long to do, but it was totally worth it.

When one awakes they wish they hadn’tTo continue to dream is the only purposewhen you open your eyes you don’t think of what lies before youLife is a hard journeyAnd dreaming is only an escape for a nightBut to keep dreaming end-lessly is a sinby Breanna Pumphrey
