Leader of the PackAmerican has been chosen fi rst in the Patriot League Preseason Poll, which was voted on by the league’s coaches and sports information directors. This marks the fi rst time AU has ever been picked to win its conference. Additionally, the Eagles have now improved by one spot in each of the last fi ve Patriot League Preseason Polls.

Standout PerformerLast season, Michelle Kirk became the fi rst AU women’s basketball student-athlete to ever be selected as the conference Player of the Year in the program’s 44-year history. She has now been picked to repeat the honor in 2010-11, which again was selected by the conference’s coaches and sports information directors. Kirk averaged a conference-best 17.7 ppg last season, and is 530 points shy of breaking American’s all-time scoring record heading into the season.

Not Just a Basketball StarIn addition to her success on the court, Kirk is a standout in the classroom, as the Communications major currently maintains a 3.73 grade-point average. On Tuesday, she was selected as a candidate for the Lowe’s Senior CLASS award, which honors the top 30 women’s basketball senior student-athletes in Div. I.

All-Around Player Liz Leer, a 2010 All-Patriot League First Team selection after averaging 12.6 points per game last year, will play a key role for the Eagles once again. The senior is a recipient of Preseason All-Patriot League honors this year, as AU is the only team with two representatives on the squad. Leer has already broken the school record in career blocked shots with 170, and is only 30 points shy of the 1,000-point plateau for her career.

Dual ThreatKirk and Leer were both named to the All-Patriot League First Team last season, the fi rst time in program history that two student-athletes have been selected to the Patriot League’s fi rst team. In 1988, Kelly Lane and Beth Shearer were both selected to the All-Colonial Athletic Association First Team, which is the only previous occasion there has been two all-conference fi rst team members from American. Additionally, Kirk and Leer become the fourth and fi fth All-PL First Team selections in AU history, and Kirk is the fi rst to ever be named multiple times. The last two-time all-league fi rst team pick occured in 1997 and 1998 with Mary Klima being selected to the All-CAA First Team both seasons.

Postseason Play AgainLast season marked the third straight year American made a postseason appearance, which set a new program record. It was the fourth WNIT berth for the Eagles in program history (1998, 2008, 2009 and 2010).

20-20 Vision American fi nished 2009-10 with 22 wins, the second most single-season victories in program history. It marked their fourth-ever 20-win season and fi rst since 1997-98.

Leadership at the TopHead Coach Matt Corkery was chosen as the Patriot League Coach of the Year last season. He became only the second women’s basketball coach in program history to be recogized with the award, joining Melissa McFerrin following the 2007-08 season.

Inside the Matchup vs. East CarolinaEast Carolina begins the 2010-11 season following a 23-11 campaign last year, which included a run to the second round of the WNIT. The Pirates fi nished with a 9-7 record in Conference USA, where they reached the C-USA Tournament Semifi nals.

East Carolina returns all fi ve starters from last year’s team, although Friday will be the fi rst game for new Head Coach Heather Macy. Ashley Clarke led the Pirates with 11.3 points per game last season along with 5.3 assists per contest. ECU benefi ted from balanced scoring last season, as four student-athletes averaged at least 9.6 ppg and seven recorded at least 6.6 ppg.

In last year’s matchup in Washington, ECU came away with a 70-65 victory over American. Kirk led the Eagles with 19 points, although an 18-point, 11-rebound effort from East Carolina’s Kim Gay proved to be the difference.

ECU leads the all-time series against American, 27-12, although besides last year, all of the matchups occurred prior to 2002.

Matt Corkery begins his third season as the head women’s basketball coach at American University. Corkery has a 41-22 career record at AU, including a 22-6 mark in Patriot League play.

The 2009-10 campaign was a historic season for Corkery’s Eagles. American fi nished Patriot League play with a 13-1 Patriot League record, its best ever conference record, and earned a share of the Patriot League regular season championship. Additionally, AU’s 22-10 overall record gave the Eagles only their fourth ever 20-win season. The 22 wins were the second most ever in school history, and AU was rewarded with its program-record third straight postseason berth.

Additionally, junior forward Michelle Kirk was named the program’s fi rst ever conference Player of the Year, as well as a ECAC Division I All-Star and Division I-AAA Athletics Directors Association Scholar-Athlete. Classmate Liz Leer joined her on the All-PL First Team, marking the fi rst time in program history the Eagles have had two fi rst team selections as a member of the Patriot League.

Finally, Corkery became the second AU women’s basketball coach to be named Patriot League Coach of the Year. Melissa McFerrin received the honor following the 2008 campaign.

In 2008-09, Corkery led American to a 19-12 record, which included the program’s second consecutive postseason appearance. The Eagles’ 10-5 non-conference record was the best in school history, and their 19 total victories were the most since the 1997-98 campaign. The Eagles defeated two NCAA Tournament teams, Drexel and Lehigh, during the season.

Additionally, Corkery coached three All-Patriot League selections in 2008-09, including First Team performer Michelle Kirk and All-Rookie Team honorees Ebony Edwards and Lisa Strack. Corkery oversaw the largest women’s basketball crowd in school history when 1,177 fans attended the home game against Lehigh on February 7, 2009.

“We are pleased with the progress that Matt and his staff have made with our women’s basketball program over the last two years both on and off the court,” commented Director of Athletics and Recreation Keith Gill. “He is a great teacher of the game and his passion for this team will translate into continued success for this program. We’re excited for what this season and the future will bring.”

Corkery was named to his current position on May 19, 2008 after serving

as AU’s associate head coach during the 2007-08 campaign. In total, Corkery has been on the AU staff for fi ve seasons. In 2007, he was elevated from assistant coach and recruiting coordinator to associate head coach. With the promotion, Corkery assumed additional responsibilities both on and off the court.

Corkery joined the Eagles in 2004 after spending three seasons as the associate head coach at Division II Emporia State (Kan.). During his tenure with the Hornets, Corkery helped guide the squad to a 63-25 record and No. 2 rankings nationally in both the 2001-02 and 2003-04 seasons.

Corkery served as an assistant coach at Stephen F. Austin University from 1999-2001. During his tenure, the Ladyjacks won consecutive Southland Conference titles and made successive appearances in the NCAA Tournament. In 2000, the Ladyjacks advanced to the second round of the NCAA Division I Tournament as a 12-seed. Corkery’s squad recorded a 54-11 record during his tenure at Stephen F. Austin.

From 1996 to 1999, as head coach at Howard College (Texas), he led the Lady Hawks to three top 10 rankings in the National Junior College Athletic Association polls and an overall record of 90-12. In 1998, Corkery was named the NJCAA Region V Coach of the Year, as his squad compiled a 34-3 record and fi nished in third-place in the NJCAA National Tournament.

Corkery earned a Bachelor’s degree in education in 1993 and a Master’s of sports and exercise sciences in 1996 from West Texas A&M University. While with the Lady Buffs, Corkery worked his way up from student assistant coach to graduate assistant and eventually earned a full-time assistant coaching position. As an assistant, Corkery mentored a Buffs squad that went 28-3, won the Lone Star Conference title and was ranked as high as No. 4 in the NCAA Division II national rankings in the 1995-96 campaign. The team’s record during Corkery’s tenure as an assistant at West Texas A&M was 120-32.

A native of Whitharral, Texas, Corkery currently resides in Washington, D.C.
