7Sensors and transducers

Vibration sensorsPiezoelectric accelerometers, both IEPE and charge mode types, are designed for use in applications where the actual acceleration range is unknown, or where shock and vibration measurements are required.

IEPE-type piezoelectric accelerometers (Isotron®) feature integral electronics, and tend to be smaller and more cost-effective. High impedance charge mode sensors are known for having a high mean time before failure (MTBF) and are used in conjunction with a charge amplifier or in-line charge converter.

Meggitt Sensing Systems offers the industry’s largest selection of standard and custom piezoelectric accelerometer sizes and configurations, as well as associated signal conditioning, cables and accessories to meet unique requirements.

Within extreme measurement environments, such as those found in nuclear power plants, cryogenic test chambers or gas turbine engines, use of piezoelectric sensors can be especially challenging. Sensors must be designed to withstand extremes of high and low temperatures and radiation, with long mean time before failure (MTBF), while providing high reliability and measurement accuracy within their intended usage environment. Meggitt Sensing Systems offers more than 60 years of expertise in the design and manufacture of rugged piezoelectric accelerometers for extreme environments. Each sensor is offered in a variety of ranges, mounting configurations and styles and subjected rigorous in-house quality testing prior to shipment, ensuring their reliability and performance.

Vibration sensorsEndevco Isotron® accelerometers from Meggitt Sensing Systems are offered in a variety of configurations, shapes and sizes, with the smallest weighing just 0.2 grams. These low impedance piezoelectric accelerometers are designed with an integral electronic charge amplifier, eliminating the need for external charge amplification, and allowing a test engineer to drive long cables with minimal distortion and noise pick-up. Isotron® accelerometers are directly compatible with industry standard IEPE current sources commonly found in most FFT analyzers and data acquisition systems. Available triaxial versions allow for simultaneous acceleration measurements across three orthogonal axes and offer continuous operation in temperatures of up to +175°C. Specialty Isotron® accelerometers, also pioneered by Meggitt Sensing Systems, include lightweight versions with 30 kHz bandwidth, high sensitivity units for seismic measurements and low-noise accelerometers for whole body motion measurements.

Vibration sensorsFor high-reliability industrial vibration measurements within deep water or other submersion environments, Meggitt Sensing Systems offers the Wilcoxon Research range of hermetically sealed underwater accelerometers. These rugged sensors are available in both stainless steel and titanium housings, making them highly resistant to galvanic corrosion, particularly when mounted onto cast iron or mild steel structures.

Wilcoxon Research underwater accelerometers are designed to withstand continuous external pressures up to 650 psi (44.8 bar). Sensors are subjected to rigorous testing of simulated actual use conditions, including weld hermeticity verifications via helium leak testing and pressure cycling, to eliminate potential for cracks which might only otherwise appear under certain operating conditions. Special water-blocked integral cabling impedes water transmission along conductors, should a cable jacket become pierced or punctured while in use.

Shock sensorsShock testing encompasses a broad range of markets, from automotive crash testing, to high-g near-field pyroshock testing and the structural integrity testing of portable devices, packaging and equipment. To support these and other applications, Meggitt Sensing Systems offers a wide selection of Endevco® piezoelectric and piezoresistive DC response shock accelerometers, designed for high-reliability performance in extreme environments.

Endevco® Isotron® (IEPE-type) and charge mode piezoelectric accelerometers are available in a variety of sizes, ranges and sensitivities, with models incorporating internal mechanical filters that can reduce accelerometer resonance and the possibility of zero shift. The extended frequency range of Endevco® DC response accelerometers allows them to measure static or constant shock, vibration and acceleration without a low frequency cutoff, making them ideal for measuring long duration transient events. Lightly damped models are available to help minimize phase shift errors, as well as models incorporating integral temperature compensation.

Variable capacitance and servo accelerometersVariable capacitance (VC) accelerometers are expressly designed for measurement of motion, long duration transient events and low frequency vibration. They provide high sensitivities at very low frequencies, down to DC, with outstanding temperature stability.

Meggitt’s Endevco® VC accelerometers are known for exceptionally high measurement accuracy, shock survivability and fast recovery times over years of use. With internal MEMS sensing elements manufactured at Meggitt’s own US facility, all aspects of quality control are carefully monitored throughout the process. The sensors operate from an unregulated DC power source and require no special signal conditioning for operation.

For the measurement of linear acceleration, deceleration and other low-frequency vibrations, Meggitt Sensing Systems offers a full range of Sensorex servo-accelerometers. These accelerometers incorporate an oil immersed sensing element for high resistance to external shock and vibration and other environmental conditions. Their inertial mass system with servo feedback and optical position pickup, combined with friction-free mounting, allow for long-term measurement stability.

Hydrophones are, quite simply, underwater microphones for acoustic measurements. Meggitt Sensing Systems offers a full range of Wilcoxon Research hydrophones, designed for use in both seawater and freshwater environments. Each hydrophone incorporates piezoelectric crystals with a built-in electronic amplifier to boost the low level signals produced by underwater pressure waves. Output is a dynamic AC signal superimposed upon the DC Bias Output Voltage (BOV). Typical applications include biological studies, ship studies and underwater ordnance monitoring.

In addition, the Wilcoxon Research family of leak detection hydrophones are used to “listen” for leakage sound indicators in situ, primarily in pipeline monitoring applications. A leak detection hydrophone is a piezoelectric sensor that is directly coupled to the fluid system to detect acoustic signals which typically characterize a leakage condition.

Measurement systemsAs a complement to the high-reliability sensor technologies available from Meggitt Sensing Systems, a complete family of directly compatible signal conditioners, shakers, calibration systems and vibration amplifiers is also offered. For best performance, Meggitt recommends that specified sensors and instrumentation be calibrated together as a complete measurement system, for seamless integration into new or existing test system setups. This ensures the quality of sensor, signal conditioning, cabling and other components, and provides the customer with single sourcing for multiple system types.

ShakersPiezoelectric and electromagnetic shakers from Meggitt Sensing Systems are used to provide reliable localized excitation of test structures within a controlled environment. By creating dynamic forces and natural frequencies, shakers can be used with sensors and other vibration monitoring devices to reveal cracks, defects or other weaknesses, allowing an engineer or test technician to better predict structural behavior over time. Electromagnetic shakers excite primarily at low frequencies to measure components, such as first bending mode of airframes and ship hulls. Piezoelectric shakers excite at high frequencies above the acoustic range where materials, such as semiconductor components and high strength metals, begin to break apart. Both types may be used within general modal and structural analysis applications, product prototype and reliability testing, component durability testing, vibration research and general laboratory testing applications.

Calibration systemsMeggitt Sensing Systems recommends the periodic calibration of sensors and instrumentation to ensure continued performance according to published specifications. For sensors used in severe environments, more frequent calibrations are recommended. Endevco® calibration systems provide an expedited means of performing necessary verifications and are particularly ideal for use in test laboratories where higher quantities of sensors are in use.

For customer convenience, Meggitt Sensing Systems offers multiple CAACS service extension plans, for continued support within the laboratory environment after initial product warranty expiration. With loaner equipment options and special access to the CAACS technical support team, the plans offer a known cost of ownership and a means of accurately budgeting support requirements, ensuring that any technical issues with the system can receive immediate troubleshooting, and be back up and running with minimal downtime.

Our premium service plan includes direct support to the CAACS team, loaner equipment, software upgrades, hardware repair costs, annual transfer standard calibration, and limited on-site support.
