The Green Routine took some time to get used to and it is now part of our daily routines. The community has done a great job and because of the Green Routine, we are now one of the leaders in Alberta for reducing our waste. In 2009, the Green Routine won an award from the Recycling Council of Alberta for outstanding contributions to waste reduction, recycling and resource conservation in Alberta.

The new 2010 waste calendar is being sent to all County residents to use. It is packed full of tips on how to reduce your environmental footprint, waste minimization, water conservation and more!

Not sure if you have approved back alley collection? Call Utilities for more information.

Your cart requires one metre (three feet) on all sides (including the top) so the collection truck

can access and lift it. Leave at least one metre between your cart, recycling, other carts, fences, mailboxes, basketball nets, overhanging tree limbs, parked cars and any other objects.

Weekly organics collectionFrom mid-June to mid-September, organics are collected weekly for residents in the hamlets of Sherwood Park (including Balmoral Heights, Fountain Creek and Sherwood Park Golf and Country Club Estates) Antler Lake, Ardrossan, Collingwood Cove, Half Moon Lake, Hastings Lake, Josephburg and North and South Cooking Lake. See page 3 for collection map.

Weekly collection was added in 2009 in response to residents’ feedback. A survey of residents indicated that most hamlet residents were in favour of weekly organic collection. The survey also found that the majority of acreage and farm residents did not want the extra collection.

Putting your cart out during street maintenance

When winter street snow clearing or spring street sweeping is occurring in your neighbourhood, you need to change where you place your cart on collection day. Watch for signs posted in your neighbourhood.

Please place your organics or waste cart at the end of your driveway. During snow clearing and street sweeping, carts cannot be on the road, sidewalk or in the gutter because vehicles cannot manoeuvre around them.

On all other collection days, it’s back to normal.

Watch for signs posted in your

neighbourhood

If you have a boulevard, make sure you put your cart in between the sidewalk and the road.

If you have a sidewalk, make sure you put your cart at the edge of the sidewalk and your driveway.

Treecycle!Christmas trees – more than just a pretty face! Did you know that once the twinkle lights and ornaments are taken off Christmas trees, they still have an important role to play? Trees collected will be shredded into woodchips and then added to the organic material collected in the green carts to make compost. The woodchips add air pockets in the compost that make organic materials break down quicker.

Please remember to:Cut your tree into four-foot sections• Remove all decorations, tinsel and lights• Take the tree out of the tree stand• Remove any plastic bags used to transport the tree• Have your tree out for collection by 7:30 a.m. on • your collection day

In 2009, 17 tonnes of Christmas trees were collected!

If you don’t receive waste collection services from Strathcona County, you can take your tree to Streambank Avenue Recycling Centre or Edmonton's Waste Management Centre free of charge, and it will be chipped and recycled. Make reduce, reuse, recycle your new year’s green resolution!

Does recycling really make a difference?

You bet! In addition to keeping materials out of the landfill here’s some more reasons why recycling is important!

Protects natural resources• - making products from recycled materials instead of virgin materials reduces the need to harvest, drill or mine for new raw materials, which can affect local environments.Saves energy• – it usually takes less energy to make recycled products than making new ones. The amount of energy saved in the first year of the Green Routine could provide enough electricity for 7,878 homes in Strathcona County for one year. Total savings are 94,532,860 kWh, and the average single family household in North America uses approximately 12,000 kWh per year.Saves clean air and water• – making products from recycled materials generally creates less pollution and uses less water than making new materials. The amount of paper we recycled last year saved 162,842,190 litres of water. Creates jobs• – the recycling industry creates more jobs than landfills do!

Buy recycled! For items to be recycled there needs to be a market demand for the material. Not all items that are recyclable have a market and this can fluctuate with economic conditions. Often what drives a manufacturer’s demand for a certain material is the consumers’ demand for the product. Help keep recycling markets going by purchasing items that contain recycled materials.

Missed collectionMissed collections are upsetting, but there is usually a reason that the materials were not collected as expected.

Waste collectors use “oops” stickers to let residents know why the materials were not collected and to help make sure they are collected the next time. Some reasons include:

waste was not separated properly • the incorrect cart was placed out for collection • cart was too close to another object and the truck couldn’t • access or reach it – must be at least one metre apartrecyclables were not packaged properly • the lid of the cart did not close properly due to overfilling • unacceptable materials were found in the cart, blue bag or • reusable containercart and contents were too heavy • (must weigh less than 200 lb)

Make sure you sort your waste correctly and help reduce contamination.

Remember to have your waste out by 7:30 a.m. Collection occurs between 7:30 a.m and 9 p.m. and materials may be picked up at different times each week. If your item(s) were sorted and packaged properly and got missed, please call 780-449-5514 before 10 a.m. the next business day. Leave the items at curbside.

Sometimes inclement weather or mechanical troubles can slow down collection. Updates are posted on our website www.strathcona.ab.ca/utilities.

Thank you for patience, we will be working hard to stay on schedule!

Go compost!Want to be a true green thumb? Add a backyard composter to your gardening mix! Many gardeners know that using compost is a great way to add nutrients, oxygen and healthy bacteria to help plants grow strong.

Compost is a natural fertilizer which reduces the need to add synthetic fertilizers. Soil containing compost holds water like a sponge, which means less watering and more protection for your plants during times of drought. Backyard composting can be as simple as raking fallen leaves into shrub and perennial beds. It provides protection for plants over the winter and preps soil for spring gardening.

See the benefits from your kitchen scraps first hand!Set up your composter in a well drained-area of your yard. Place loose twigs, pine needles or other coarse, dry material at the bottom of your composter for drainage and air circulation. Add some dried leaves or dry plant clippings, top with a splash of water, then add your nutrient-rich kitchen (no meat, bones etc.) and yard scraps and top with garden soil. Repeat these layers a second time—each layer should be 5 to 10 centimetres thick. If your pile is too dry, add water and more nutrient-rich scraps. If it is too wet or has an odour, turn it with a shovel and add more dry material. Compost should have a neutral, earthy odour and a black, crumbly texture when finished. Add finished compost to gardens, around shrubs or sprinkle as a top dressing over your lawn.

Green gardening – ecoscape your yard

Create more beauty with less water! Ecoscaping combines healthy soil with native and drought-tolerant plants, trees and shrubs to create attractive, low-maintenance and water efficient landscape which leave a small environmental footprint.

Weeding, mowing and watering consume a lot of time and precious resources. Ecoscaped yards use ground covers, hardy grasses and low-water plants that require very little maintenance once established.

Ecoscaped yards are more resilient when severe weather conditions strike. Traditional yards may be more affected by drought, pests and disease.

Plan to attend our “Learn to ecoscape” workshop in May. Watch the local newspaper or visit our website for dates and times. You can also check out our website for more benefits of ecoscaping, tips on getting started and a Strathcona County-customized plant list.

Summer guide to using your green organics cart

Layer, layer, layer! To reduce the chance of materials • sticking to the bottom and sides of the cart, layer wet organics (kitchen scraps, grass clippings) with dry organics (newspapers). It will also help reduce odours. Store the organics cart in a shaded or covered area.• Sprinkle a small amount of vinegar, powdered garden • lime, baking soda or powdered laundry detergent (without bleach) at the bottom of the organics cart.Wait until just before organics collection day to clean out • your refrigerator or freezer.Keep smelly organics in the freezer until your organics • collection day.Don't pack contents of the cart down. Organic meterials may • become stuck in the cart and the truck may not be able to fully empty it. Wrap meet and fish in newspaper to help reduce odours and • pests.

Controlling pestsTaking steps to control pests is best. Spreading detergent or vinegar around the lip of the cart may control insects. Visit our website for tips to help reduce and remove pests found with organic waste.

Mow&Go!Grasscycling is an alternative to raking and collecting grass and leaves. What is grasscycling?Grasscycling is a natural process that is easy, saves time and money! Simply leave the clippings on your lawn as you mow. They quickly decompose, usually within three days, and act as a natural fertilizer to the soil.Grasscycling tips:

Mow your lawn higher. Keep the grass blade length about • 6 cm. This encourages the roots to grow deep, giving a healthier, hardier lawn. Keep the blades on your mower sharp. This will give your • grass a nice clean cut. Mow often, about every four or five days. It will keep • the clippings small so they can fall between the blades of grass and decompose quickly. If you have been unable to mow for a while, collect the clippings and put them in your organics cart or bring them to Streambank Avenue Recycling Centre.Mow when your grass is dry. Dry clippings are dispersed • better and there is less chance of clogging the mower. Any mower will do. If your mower does not have a safety • flap over the chute, make sure you purchase a retrofit kit.

Did you knowGrasscycling helps keep moisture in the soil so you

don’t have to water your

lawn as often. Grasscycling is a natural

fertilizer for your lawn. Clippings release valuable

nutrients such as nitrogen,

potassium and phosphorus

into the ground when they

decompose.

Reduce your water use!Water use can increase as much as 40 per cent during the summer. Follow the simple tips below to help even out the demand on our water system during daily peak periods. Hot temperatures and a lack of rainfall contribute exponentially to the demand for limited water resources. Reducing the demand on our drinking water system can reduce the chances of watering restrictions or bans.

Use a rain barrel. You can save money by reducing your • monthly water bill. Collecting rainwater from rooftop runoff provides an ample supply of free soft water containing no chlorine, lime or calcium. Rainwater tends to have fewer sediments and dissolved salts than municipal water. This makes it ideal for many uses, including organic vegetable gardens, raised planter beds, indoor tropicals such as ferns and orchids, car washing and cleaning windows.Check for leaks. We’re more likely to notice leaky faucets • indoors, but don’t forget to check outdoor faucets, pipes and hoses for leaks. Update your sprinkler. Switch to a sprinkler with a timer built in • or purchase a timer that can be attached directly to your faucet. Does your lawn really need to be watered? Lawns become • dormant during dry periods and bounce back when it rains. If you do water your lawn, it only needs one hour a week. Water your lawn early in the morning - before 7 a.m. is best.

Electronics recyclingWith so many advances in electronic technology in recent years, it seems items are obsolete before you get them home. This can create large amounts of electronic waste. These electronics contain materials such as lead, mercury, cadmium, beryllium and PVC plastics that can cause significant environmental and health risks if they end up in Alberta landfills. However, the metals, glass and plastic in these used products can be recycled into valuable products, including the next generation of electronics.

Strathcona County sends the electronics to a recycling company that processes the materials right here in Alberta. Electronic materials that are collected for e-cycling:

personal computers keyboards mice cables speakers laptop computers notebook computers servers

desktop printers printer combination units fax combination machines computer monitors (CRT) computer monitors (LCD) televisions – wood, CRT, Flat screen rear projection televisions cell phones

You can take your e-cycling to: one of the Enviroservice events • Staples Business Depot 350, 390 Baseline Road, Sherwood • Park ECO Stations 5150 -99 Street, Edmonton or 11440-143 St, • Edmonton Call 780-442-5311 for more information

Reduce your waste-lineCelebrate Waste Reduction Week by putting your waste on a diet! Here are some tips to keep your waste-line down.

Watch your portion size - purchase products that have minimal packaging. Approximately 35 per cent of household waste is from packaging.

Take your vitamins - in the spring and summer put your vegetable scraps in a backyard composter. The compost provides valuable nutrients for gardens.

Reduce fibre intake - recycle your cardboard, newspaper and other paper products. If you receive waste collection from Strathcona County, put it out every week for collection at your house. You can also bring paper products to your nearest recycle station.

Eliminate empty calories - plastics do not break down in a landfill. Recycle your plastic products at a recycle station or if you receive waste collection from Strathcona County, put plastics out in a clear blue bag for collection at your house.

Exercise your give and take - donate lightly used goods to charity, or trade them with your neighbours.

Reusing saves energy, money and landfill space! For more tips on reducing your waste, visit www.wrwcanada.com.

Leaves can cause build-up in your cart. They soak up the moisture in the cart and can cause the contents to become stuck. To help prevent this, layer your wet organics (food, leaves, grass etc.) with dry organics (newspaper, pizza boxes etc.)

Winter collection tipsWe know that the weather in Alberta can change drastically – sometimes overnight! Here are some tips to keep in mind once the temperatures drop.

Give your organics cart a winter lining. Line the bottom and sides of your organics cart with newspaper. Then make sure to layer wet organics (food waste, leaves) with dry organics (newspaper, pizza boxes). This will reduce the possibility of organics freezing to the cart when the temperatures drop. Layering is even more important during the time of year when temperatures fluctuate frequently.

Don’t pack it in. Don’t pack contents of the cart down. Organic materials may become stuck in the cart and the truck may not be able to fully empty it.

Wrap it up! Wrap wet or smelly organics in soiled boxes (cereal or shoe box), paper bags or newspaper to help prevent them from freezing to the cart.

Pull, don’t push. When there is snow on the ground, pull your organics or waste cart – don’t push. The bottom of the cart will cause snow to build up making it difficult to move. Pulling the cart won’t cause snow to build up while moving the cart.

Be friendly. Get to know your neighbours. If they need help getting their cart to the curb, ask if you can do it for them.

Take it off-road. Only when snow clearing is occuring in your neighbourhood, make sure to place your cart on your driveway and not on the road.
