Classical/GreatBooksApproachWithin humanities courses (theology, English language arts, social studies), the school curriculum is using a ‘Great Books’ approach, utilizing the books of the Western, classical tradition to take students into the ideas of our faith and world. Using these ‘irst sources,’ our students will be well prepared for college level writing, reading, and thinking.

Just as importantly, the unity of thought contained in these books will help students ind an intellectual basis for their faith.

TechnologyPlanOur graduates need to be able to work successfully in the realities of the modern college classroom and workplace. Full technology integration is our goal, centered on a belief that this is most meaningful in a one-to-one environment: one laptop per student and teacher. Our fully wire-less, high speed network serves this integration goal, along with LCD projectors in every classroom.

Extra-curricularProgramThe school offers many extra-curricular clubs and activities, and continues to develop offerings each year. Our belief is that students learn much from these activities, form community, develop ownership, and have fun, of course. We offer student government, yearbook, academic team, liturgical music, Pro-life club, science club, Latin and Spanish clubs, Ambassadors, photo club, faith formation/retreat leaders, and drama. Moreover, our student government group runs at least one social event per month for students.

AthleticsProgramOur belief in athletics is the same as our belief in extra-curriculars: young people should have a non-academic activity that helps form the pursuit of excellence and supports our core mission. The school currently offers athletics opportu-nities in eleven-man football, volleyball, cross country, cheerleading, basketball, wrestling, swimming, soccer, golf, tennis, track, softball, and baseball. The school is a member of the Texas Association of Private & Parochial Schools.

TuitionandFeesTuition & fees for 2011-2012 are $7,000, which includes a $250 regis-tration fee and a $250 technology fee. We have a ‘one-number concept’ for tuition, hoping to make

budgeting more straight-forward for families. The only other fees are fees for sports and activities, and a charge for paperbacks (approx. $100/year).

ApplicationandAdmissionsProcessCatholic high schools in the Archdiocese use the High School Placement Test (HSPT), designed by Scholastic Testing Service. The uniied test date is Saturday, 3 December 2011; we will give the test at our school starting at 8:45 a.m. Students should test at the school of irst choice, but can test elsewhere and have the results forwarded to JPII. All forms, dates, and more information are posted on our web site. Sophomore and junior applications will be accepted at any time. Freshmen who apply after 3 Dec. 2011 will be given a different on-campus assessment.

PeerSchoolsintheArchdioceseAs a group, the Catholic high schools in the Archdiocese of San Antonio represent top college prepara-tory education in San Antonio. In 2010, the schools had a collective graduation rate of 98.8%; 92.7% of graduates entered universities or technical schools in the fall; and those students had scholarship and grant offers of over $43.8 million (of 701 graduates in 2009).

MissionJohn Paul II Catholic High School is an Archdiocesan, Roman Catholic college preparatory high school for young women and men that afirms the dignity of all persons; prepares students for excellence in college; engages students in the great works of our Western, Catholic tradition; and deepens young persons’ relationship with Christ.

FormationinFaithAt the heart of our mission is spiritual formation. A Catholic high school is in a special position to affect the lives of young men and young women, as they form

the direction for their adult lives. To this end, JPII is actively creating an environment based on our four core virtues: humility, faith, courage, and love. Through retreats, family nights, sacraments, weekly liturgies, and daily prayer, our community has the opportunity to live as Catholics. Small student faith groups also serve spiritual formation. All students and teachers are members of these small communities, called Solidarity Teams, and they gather four times per week to pray, read, discuss, share, and plan liturgies and service/parish outreach.

FacultyExcellenceIn 2011-2012, we have sixteen faculty and staff members serving our students. Among

the group, the teachers have earned 11 Master’s degrees, two Ph.D’s, and one MD. Collectively, the teaching faculty has 198 years of experience, a ifteen-year average. We are proud of this accomplished, faith-illed, dedicated, and professional group.

LeadershipOpportunitiesAt JPII, there are many places and times for students to develop leadership skills and to participate in the foundation of the school. From the academic program, to service and faith formation, to athletics and to clubs and activities, all students have the chance to be leaders, to be founders of our programs.

IndividualAttentionJPII will be a school of just over 150 students in 2012-13, and by 2015 will be a school of 200 students. We always will be a school where students and families can receive individual attention and be active members of the community. Our oficial student-to-teacher ratio is 8:1; most classes are fewer than 17 students.

CurriculumThe school academic program is college preparatory and serves students well who are willing to work hard. The faculty and school administration help students reach their greatest potential, whatever their calling may be. The graduation requirements include 28 credits, with four credits required in each core subject (theology, mathematics, science, social studies, English). The course offerings include a full set of AP courses, dual credit courses with area community colleges, ine arts, and on-line classes.

Co-instructionalclassesWithin most core courses, and most lower level courses, the school has placed students in single gender classes. In senior level and in more specialized courses, the classes are co-ed. The reason is speciic: a body of research shows real gains in student performance for both boys and girls in single gender classes. In the structuring of our school’s program, we plan to have the best of both environments: co-ed and single gender.
