The Park University women’s basketball team will embark on its second season under Head Coach Kenneth Cooper in the 2011-12 season. The Pirates return three all-conference players and a team that finished fourth in the AMC standings with an 18-11 overall and 9-7 AMC record in 2010-11. Park put together the second greatest turnaround in the NAIA last season after improving its win total by 13 games from its 5-25 record in 2009-10. The turnaround was just one win away from California Baptist’s NAIA best 14 plus win total from the year prior. Park returns Vivian Holcomb, Brianna Beridon and Dominique Hayes to this year’s squad. All three were named to the AMC All-Conference team. Holcomb was a first-team all-conference player and was the only freshman to be named to the team, while Beridon and Hayes were named to the AMC honorable mention squad. Holcomb led Park in scoring and rebounding at 11.4 points and 8.1 boards per game. In her first year with Park, Beridon was second on the team in scoring with 10.1 points per game and Hayes averaged 9 points per game and seven rebounds a game as a junior. Along with Hayes, the Pirates return four other seniors including Kristian Dodds, Oasha White, Halima Ram-sey and Nicole Wilhite. Dodds enters her third year with the Pirates this season, as she appeared in 29 games with three starts a year ago and averaged 6.1 points per game. White is a three year starter and started in all but six games last season. White led the team in steals with 54. Ramsey is another tough defender for Park, she appeared in all 29 games for coach Cooper with 26 starts. Wilhite enters her second year for the Pirates. Wilhite knocked down a team high 36 three-pointers as a junior and shot 75-percent from the free-throw line. Park ushers in four newcomers this season including juniors Carla McKinney and Joanna Mat-thews, along with freshmen Danila Fabbri and Kelcie Schiele. McKinney is a transfer out of Northeastern Oklahoma A&M and Matthews transfers to Park after a stint at Mt. San Antonio College in California. Fabbri is a 6-7 center out of Brazil and Schiele comes to the Pirates after a successful career at local University Academy in Kansas City, Mo. Look for all four starters to pick up big minutes this season for Cooper. Park’s 2011-12 schedule will test the Pirates early on in the non-conference slate, Park’s season opener will take place at the Breckon Sports Center on Nov. 2 when they take on Tabor College. Then Park travels to Bethany, Okla., for two games to take part in the Southwestern Christian Classic. The Pirates will face Science & Arts (Okla.) on Nov. 4 and host school Southwestern Chris-tian on Nov. 5. The biggest test of the non-conference schedule will be on Nov. 7 when they travel just a few miles south to downtown Kansas City, Mo., to go head-to-head with NCAA Division I UMKC in an exhibition contest. Both teams will hit the hardwood against one another for the first time since Jan. 29, 1985. The contest will take place on UMKC’s campus at the Swinney Recreation Center. The following weekend, the Pirates will face off in the Ottawa Classic in Ottawa, Kan., to take on Benedictine College and Baker University. A return trip to the Breckon Sports Center on Nov. 15 will welcome in Missouri Valley, then two days later Park will travel to Rolla, Mo., to face NCAA Division II Missouri S&T for the Miners season opener. The Pirates will end the first half of its schedule with three straight home games on Nov. 22 against MidAmerica Nazarene, Nov. 26 against NCAA Division III Grinnell College, and Nov. 29 against Avila University. After the new year, Park hosts Benedictine College at the Breckon Sports Center on Jan. 2 then opens the American Midwest Conference regular season on Jan. 6 in Walnut Ridge, Ark., as they take on Williams Baptist College. They take on the Eagles a second time the next day on Jan. 7. Park will roll into Columbia, Mo., to take on nationally ranked Columbia College on Jan. 12 and Columbia will visit Parkville, Mo., on Feb. 4. Nationally ranked William Woods will visit the Breckon Sports Center on Jan. 14 and Park will return the favor and visit the Owls on Feb. 9 in a crucial AMC showdown. Park will make its first trip to St. Louis, Mo., on Jan. 21 to compete against Harris-Stowe, then a little less than a month later, HSSU will take on Park on Feb. 16 in Parkville. Jan. 26 Park takes on a team that they haven’t lost to in its three years in the AMC in Stephens College at home, then travels to Columbia, Mo., to take on the Stars on Feb. 18. Missouri Baptist, who finished third in the AMC last season, takes on the Pirates on Jan. 28 and hosts Park on Feb. 23. The final AMC opponents Park will see this season is Hannibal-LaGrange University. Park travels to Hannibal, Mo., on Feb. 2 and hosts the Trojans on Feb. 25. The AMC quarterfinals will take place on Feb. 29, while the semifinals will tip off on Mar. 2 and the AMC Championship game is set for Mar. 5 The 2011-12 NAIA Division I Women’s Basketball National Championship tournament will run from Mar. 14-20 at the Frankfort Convention Center in Frankfort, Ky. The Pirates will look for only its second appearance in the national tournament in school his-tory, the last appearance came in 2005-06 under head coach Joe C. Meriweather.

Kenneth Cooper led Park to an 18-11 record in his first season as head coach, the 18 wins are the third most in a season in program history.

Vivian Holcomb earned a spot on the 2010-11 AMC First-Team All-Conference as a freshman and was the only freshman player named to the First-Team.

kenneth Cooper enters his second season as head coach of the Park University women’s basketball team. Cooper helped the Pirates to an 18-11 overall and 9-7 AMC record in 2010-11 and finished

the AMC regular season in fourth-place. In just his first season as head coach, Cooper led the Pirates to the third most wins in a season in program history. The Pirates went 5-25 in 2009-10, the year before Cooper became coach, and increased its win total by 13 under Cooper marking the second greatest turnaround in NAIA Division I Women’s basketball, just one win away from California Baptist’s 14 plus win total from the year prior. Coach Cooper’s first recruiting class consisted of freshmen Vivian Holcomb and Trinity Vickers, sopho-more transfer Brianna Beridon and junior transfer Nicole Wilhite. That group of four players accounted for 49-percent of the Pirates scoring this season and helped the Pirate defense allow just 60 points per game. Holcomb was the only freshman named to the 2010-11 AMC Women’s Basketball First-Team All-Conference squad and Beridon was named to the AMC Honorable Mention All-Conference team. Cooper spent three years as the assistant coach and recruiting coordinator at NCAA Division I Mercer University in Macon, Ga., from 2007-2010, and was instrumental in assisting head coach Janell Jones reinvigorate the Bears’ program. A proven winner, Cooper’s work at MU was another successful stint in his coaching career. Cooper was a part of a staff that inherited a 5-25 team and then had to endure a 4-26 record its first season with the Bears. However, the 2008-09 season, in which the Bears went 17-14, proved to be the great-est turnaround in the country that year, according to CollegeRPI.com, by making a 153 point swing (315 to 162) in the RPI from that inaugural campaign with Mercer. The team was picked to finish eighth in the Atlantic Sun Conference by both media and coaches pre-season polls, but proved the experts wrong with a fourth place showing and advanced all the way to the A-Sun semifinals. The 2009-10 Bears – despite an injury-plagued season – managed a second-straight trip to the A-Sun tournament and posted a record of 14-16, on a team with just two seniors on the entire roster. The 31 wins amassed by MU in the past two seasons are the most in any back-to-back seasons by Bears’ teams since 1995-97. Along with his duties as assistant coach at Mercer, Cooper has excelled as the recruiting coordinator for the Bears in each of his seasons. In those three seasons, student-athletes recruited by Cooper have earned a first-team All A-Sun award, three second-team all-conference honors, an A-Sun Defensive Player of the Year, eight A-Sun Player of the Week awards and 18 academic all-conference selections. Statistically, MU has had a top-five scorer in the A-Sun in each of his years. This season, the team had the No. 2 and No. 7 scorers in the league, as well as the steals leader. As a part of Mercer’s 2010-11 recruiting class, Cooper brought in three players that were ranked in the top 50 by ESPN in the southeast Region. Prior to joining the Bears, Cooper spent three seasons as an assistant with Seminole State College, help-ing the team reach the Bi-State Conference Tournament each year during his tenure. Cooper compiled a 51-40 (.560) record during his three-year stint as an assistant coach with Seminole State. The team improved each season, going from 10-21 in 2004-05 to 16-13 in 2005-06 to 25-6 in 2006-07. The Belles won the Bi-State West Conference championship last season with a 14-0 mark at home. Seminole State also finished third at the 2007 NJCAA Region II Tournament. Also serving as recruiting coordinator for Seminole, Cooper brought in and coached numerous players that received accolades. He tutored six all-conference nominees, three first team all-region performers, a regional Player of the Year and a second team All-NJCAA member. Prior to his arrival at Seminole State, Cooper played at the University of Montevallo in Montevallo, Ala. After redshirting his freshman year, Cooper helped the Falcons win a Gulf South Conference Tournament title during his senior season when he served as team captain. Montevallo also reached the NCAA Division II South Regional finals as the Falcons finished with a 23-10 record in 2004. He received the University of Montevallo Sportsmanship Award in 2004. A native of Fayetteville, Ga., Cooper starred at Fayette County High School before his collegiate play-ing career at Montevallo. At Fayette County, he served as team captain his junior and senior seasons while earning four varsity letters. Cooper graduated from Montevallo in 2004 with a bachelor’s degree in kinesiology. Cooper and his wife Erin, reside in Kansas City, Mo.

In just his first year as a head coach, Park University’s Kenneth Cooper helped lead Park’s women’s basketball team to an 18-11 record in 2010-11 and finished the AMC season in fourth-place with a record of 9-7. In fact, the team’s .636 winning percentage is the second highest in school his-tory and its 18 wins are the third most in the 31 years of the program. The Pirates went 5-25 in 2009-10 and increased its win total by 13 in 2010-11 marking the second greatest turnaround in NAIA Division I Women’s basketball, just one win away from California Baptist’s 14 plus win total from the year prior. “I’m very proud of our turnaround last season and the way our team responded to the new regime,” said Cooper. “To bring in four new players and still keep the nucleus of what you had and buy in the way they did says a lot about our kids.” Coach Cooper’s first recruiting class consisted of freshmen Vivian Holcomb and Trinity Vickers, sophomore transfer Brianna Beridon and junior transfer Nicole Wilhite. That group of four players accounted for 49-percent of the Pirates scoring this season and helped the Pirate defense allow just 60 points per game. Holcomb was the only freshman named to the 2010-11 AMC Women’s Bas-ketball First-Team All-Conference squad and Beridon was named to the AMC Hon-orable Mention All-Conference team. Wilhite was fifth on the team in scoring and knocked down 36 three-point baskets, leading the team. Dominique Hayes played her third season for the Pirates and joined Beridon on the AMC Honorable-Mention All-Conference team, after averaging 9 points per game and seven boards per game. Halima Ramsey started 26 games in 2010-11 averaged 28.4 minutes per game Kristian Dodds averaged 6.1 points per game for Park in her junior season. Before the winter break, Park began the season with a record of 7-2 and picked up big victories over teams in the Kansas City metro area including MidAmerica Nazarene twice, Benedictine College and Baker University. The Pirates struggled in their first two conference games, dropping both games to Missouri Baptist and Columbia College. Park then responded with wins over Harris-Stowe and Hannibal-LaGrange and after Park’s second game with Williams Baptist, the Pirates won four of their final five conference games and finished the year in a tie for fourth-place in the confer-ence. Park then hosted the AMC Quarterfinal round on March 2, 2011, hosting Wil-liams Baptist College. The Pirates rolled past the Eagles, 72-53, and next had a date with No. 1 seeded Columbia College in the AMC semifinals. Park and Columbia battled for 40 minutes but the Cougars came out victorious with a 76-48 win ending the Pirates season. This is the second time in Coach Cooper’s young career he has helped a team battle from the cellar and rise to near the top of the conference standings. As an assistant coach at NCAA Division I Mercer University, Cooper was a part of a staff that inherited a 5-25 team and then had to endure a 4-26 record its first season with the Bears. However, the 2008-09 season, in which the Bears went 17-14, proved to be the greatest turnaround in the country that year, according to CollegeRPI.com, by making a 153 point swing (315 to 162) in the RPI from that inaugural campaign with Mercer. “To have something like that happen at two different school’s you just have to have your kid’s believe in you and believe in your system,” said Cooper. “You have to show that you care from day one and we always preach to the team that we are a family and when they grasped that concept we brought that to the court and we were successful.” The Pirates will return seven players from the 2010-11 team and hopes to move up in the AMC standings in the 2011-12 season.

Kenneth Cooper led Park to a fourth-place finish in the AMC standings and was just one win away from playing for an AMC tournament title.

Brianna Beridon was second on the team in scoring in 2010-11 averaging 10.1 points per game and earned a spot on the AMC Honorable Mention All-Conference team.

P ark University calls Parkville, Mo., and the Greater Kansas City area home, of-fering students the features of both small-town life and the flashing lights of a big city. With a population of more than 4,000, Parkville allows students the small-town lifestyle and tightly knit community often times associated with small college athletics and the NAIA. Originally a trading post on the Missouri River, Parkville grew as Kansas City boomed in the late 1800s, which included the founding of Park University. Both the University and the city get their names from Col. George S. Park, who played a key role in the early development of the area. Today, Parkville’s historic downtown district, coupled with new shopping areas to the north and east, gives Park University students multiple entertainment opportuni-ties within the area. Parkville sits within the Northland area of metropolitan Kansas City, which encompasses 15 counties, nine of which are in Missouri and six across the state line in Kansas. The Northland is locally referred to as “north of the river.” Contained wholly within Missouri, it encompasses portions of Platte and Clay counties, including the northern half of Kansas City, Mo., and the cities of Parkville, Gladstone, Liberty and North Kansas City. Kansas City is situated at the confluence of the Kansas and Missouri rivers, often referred to as Kaw Point, straddling the border between the two states. The Kansas City Metropolitan Statistical Area, anchored by Kansas City, Mo., is the 29th largest in the United States, with an estimated population just over 2 million. A tradition-rich city known for its barbecue and storied sports history, Kansas City is currently home to Major League Baseball’s Kansas City Royals, the Kansas City Chiefs of the National Football League, Major League Soccer’s Sporting Kansas City and the Kansas Speedway, which hosts multiple NASCAR and IRL events throughout the year, including two Sprint Cup Series event in the spring and fall. Kansas City is also home to the Kansas City T-Bones independent league baseball franchise and the Kansas City Explorers of World TeamTennis. The Sprint Center and the Power & Light District in the downtown area is one of the region’s top entertainment areas. The Sprint Center also houses the College Bas-ketball Experience, which includes the National Collegiate Basketball Hall of Fame. A few blocks away sits historic Municipal Auditorium, home to the Buffalo Funds-NAIA Division I Men’s Basketball Tournament. In 2010, Park University made its third appearance in five seasons, and its fifth overall, in the national tournament. Additionally, the National Association of Intercol-legiate Athletics moved its offices downtown in the summer of 2007. Kansas City is also known for its historic shopping districts, including Westport and the Country Club Plaza, which is one of the world’s largest outdoor shopping areas designed for motor-vehicle traffic. Commonly referred to as “The Plaza,” it is home to one of the nation’s largest holiday light displays between Thanksgiving and January. In the Northland, Zona Rosa has become a popular shopping district, while Leawood Town Center and The Legends at Village West in Kansas City, Kan., keep shoppers occupied in Kansas.

Best Value, Nationwide Park continues to increase access to higher education by offering the quality under-graduate and graduate degrees students desire at locations, times and delivery formats that best serve their needs. In 2010, the University was ranked as the No. 1 value among private colleges and universities by Parents & Colleges, an online resource for parents of college-bound students. According to Parents & Colleges, institutions included on this list offer a diver-sity of degrees, have affordable tuitions and/or offer generous financial aid, and report the highest SAT or ACT scores for the incoming class. Park was cited as offering “both proxim-ity to big-city excitement and the safe, relaxed atmosphere of a small town… the student body represents 50 states and 100 countries, and the school prides itself on its diversity and global outlook. Tuition for full-time undergraduates is a fraction of other private institu-tions, and average class size and student-to-faculty ratio are low.”

Founded Founded in 1875 in Parkville, Mo., Park University has developed into a comprehensive, indepen-dent institution that is a national leader in higher education. In 2000, Park achieved university status and now serves more than 24,000 students annually at 40 campus centers in 21 states and online. Serving an ethnically diverse student population and non-traditional adult learners has, for many years, been central to Park’s educational mission. Even in its first year, Park University enrolled women students as well as men, something that was unusual at the time; and two of the original 17 students were Native Americans. C laude English is in his 16th year as Park University’s Director of Athletics, serving in the role since January of 1996. Throughout English’s 15-year tenure as Director of Athletics, Park University has steadily improved its athletics facilities, enhancing an already first-rate student-athlete experience. The 2011-12 academic year will add to the list of facility improvements under English’s watch, when the Park University cross country and track and field squads will begin the season with a new track adjacent to Julian Field, a 1,500-seat soccer stadium also built under English’s watch in 2001. Breckon Sports Center, home to Park’s volleyball and basketball programs, as well as the baseball and softball complexes, have continued to see playing-surface and aesthetic upgrades in English’s 15 years as Athletics Director. In 2010-11, English was honored for his service as an athletics administrator by being inducted into the McLendon Minority Athletics Administrators Hall of Fame, June 23, 2010, in Anaheim, Calif., representing the NAIA in a group of seven individuals honored by the John McLendon Minority Scholarship Foundation. The Foundation supports the John McLendon Memorial Minority Postgraduate Scholarship Awards is presented to senior-level minority stu-dents who intend to pursue a graduate degree in athletics administration. English was joined in the 2010 McLendon Hall of Fame induction class by Percy Bates, Ber-nie Bickerstaff, Howard Gentry, Sr., Michael Haynes, Rafer Johnson and Don Newcombe, while a second group of Pioneer Award winners was also honored. That group included Wisconsin AD Barry Alvarez, Ernie Davis, USC AD Mike Garrett, Tom Goss, UCLA AD Dan Guerrero, Charles Harris, Tommy Hawkins, Kim Ng, Fritz Pollard, Burl Toler and former Washington and Notre Dame head football coach Tyrone Willingham. English began his affiliation with Park University in the 1992-93 men’s basketball season, coaching the Pirates through the end of the 2004-05 campaign. For his final 10 seasons at the helm of the Park men’s basketball program, English also assumed the duties of Director of Ath-letics, a position he will continue into his 16th year in the 2011-12 academic year. English is the winningest coach in Park University men’s basketball history, compiling 182 wins to push his overall win total to 227. From 1981 to 1984, English was the head men’s basketball coach at his alma mater, Rhode Island, where he was named Atlantic-10 Conference Coach of the Year in the 1981-82 season. His coaching tenure at Park was highlighted by the Pirates’ run to the NAIA Division I Men’s Basketball Tournament semifinal round in 1997-98, which ended with a school-record mark of 27-8. English was honored at the national tournament with the Charles A. Krigel Award for outstanding sportsmanship, while his team was awarded the Dr. James Naismith-Emil S. Liston Sportsmanship Award for the team recognized as most sportsmanlike at the tourney. After a stellar collegiate playing career for Christian College in Dallas, Texas, and the University of Rhode Island, English was selected in the NBA draft by the Portland Trail Blazers where he played the 1970-71 season. English also played in the Eastern Basketball Association for the Hartford Capitals, the affiliate team for the Philadelphia 76ers. In 1973-74, English won the Eastern Basketball Association Championship with the Capitals. He was a three-year captain at Hartford. As Director of Athletics at Park, the Pirates have captured 50 conference championships, and in each of his 15 previous seasons as athletics director, at least one Park program has ad-vanced to NAIA postseason play each year. Also during his run as Director of Athletics, 86 student-athletes have been named NAIA All-Americans, including a track and field national champion in the NAIA marathon, and 179 student-athletes have earned Daktronics-NAIA Scholar Athlete honors. In 2008-09, Park University’s department of athletics carried an overall grade point average better than 3.0, and the Pirates earned a school record seven NAIA scholar teams, marking more than half of the department’s programs posting a team GPA of 3.0 or better. In 2010-11, Park narrowly missed its school record for scholar teams, landing six on the list, including first-time honorees as the baseball and men’s basketball teams achieved better than 3.0 team GPAs.

The American Midwest Conference (formerly known as the Show-Me Collegiate Conference) sponsors championships in 13 different sports: baseball, men’s and women’s basketball, men’s and women’s cross country, men’s and women’s golf, men’s and women’s soccer, softball, men’s and women’s track and field, and volleyball. The purpose of the American Midwest Conference is to promote the positive ideals and objectives of athletics, to provide an organization of colleges and universities with similar foundations to engage in athletic contests on an equal basis, to serve as a forum to formulate and solve common problems, to enhance and preserve athletics in their true perspective and to promote athletics in an academic environment. The AMC is a member of the National Association of Intercol-legiate Athletics (NAIA). The nine member institutions that make up the AMC include Park University (Parkville, Mo.), Columbia College (Columbia, Mo.), Hannibal-LaGrange University (Hannibal, Mo.), Harris-Stowe State University (St. Louis, Mo.), Missouri Baptist University (St. Louis, Mo.), Stephens College (Columbia, Mo.), Wil-liams Baptist College (Walnut Ridge, Ark.), Benedictine University at Springfield (Springfield, Ill.) and William Woods University (Fulton, Mo.)

The purpose of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) is to promote the education and development of students through intercol-legiate athletic participation. Member institutions, although varied and diverse, share a common commitment to high standards and to the principle that participa-tion in athletics serves as an integral part of the total educational process. The NAIA embraces the concept of the student and recognizes the importance of the individuality of each member institution, the value of the confer-ences and Association of Independent Institutions (A.I.I.) structure, and the benefits of membership in a national association. The NAIA supports gender equity. Gender equity is an atmosphere and reality where fair distribution of overall athletic opportunity and resources, proportionate to enrollment, are available to women and men, and where no student-athlete, coach or athletics administrator is discriminated against in any way in the athletics program. That is to say, an athletics program is gender-equitable when the men’s sports program would be pleased to accept as its own the overall participation opportunities and resources currently allocated to the women’s sports program and vice versa. The NAIA has 50,000 student-athletes participating at nearly 300 member colleges and universities throughout the United States and Canada. Divided into 25 conferences and the Association of Independent Institutions (A.I.I.), the NAIA offers 23 championships in 13 sports. Since 1937, the NAIA has continued a long tradition of pushing the envelope and making a positive difference in the lives of students, coaches and parents. The Champions of Character program is the latest cutting-edge addition to the NAIA’s proud history of innovation. Through Champions of Character, the NAIA seeks to create an environment in which every student-athlete, coach, official and spectator are committed to the true spirit of competition through the five core values: respect, integrity, responsibility, servant leadership and sportsmanship.
