Summer Camp Catalog for camps and programs that

keep kids engaged, active and focused on expanding their horizons!

Arlington County programs offer lots of choices, safe and inviting environments,

and the chance for children to develop strong bonds with their community. Kids get their

fill of thrills through sports; showcase their talents through the arts; reap the rewards of

volunteerism; invigorate their imaginations through creative play; explore the outdoors through

nature programs; and have adventures galore. All while making friends and lifelong memories.

Arlington’s quality programs encourage youth to get involved, develop their sense of self and

community, show positive sportsmanship, be creative and learn from those who have different

life experiences than they do. We call it “asset building.” Summer is the perfect time

to bring people together by nurturing a healthy development that helps young

people grow up confident, caring and responsible.

Qualified Staff

make it Happen

Camp and playground counselors are special people. PRCR staff must love working with young people (or we won’t hire them). They are creative, enthusiastic, committed and sincere...plus super-patient and loads of fun! In fact, many of Arlington’s camp and playground counselors have been campers themselves, often in the programs they now direct. A lot of our committed staff are schoolteachers, college students, or college graduates who hope to find a permanent job working with kids. They’re a talented and fun bunch, each with loads of experience in his or her specialty area, and all committed to help-ing your child to be the best he or she can be. To ensure your children have a positive and fun experience, Arlington County invests many hours in staff train-ing and development. In addition to meeting the qualifications for their position, all summer staff attends mandatory training that focuses on promoting positive participation; creative expression; cooperative and adaptive games; heart-healthy and wellness activities; risk management and safety; child protective services; procedures and policies; planning activities; positive and produc-tive scheduling; and developing welcoming spaces.

Arlington Camps for All

Abilities As part of our inclusion philosophy, youth with disabilities are welcome to register for programs of inter-est. We have designated Glebe and Fairington Tot camps, McKinley Elementary Summerfest and Teen Summer Adventure as sites that receive additional services. These sites have a lower camp maximum, lower staff to camper ratio and additional training for staff on program modifications, behavior management and inclusion of individuals with disabilities. Also check our TR Camps on page 6.

Everyone benefits from Arlington County programs. Trained therapeu-tic recreation staff can assist you in making sure your child has the right support and accommodations, no matter the special needs. To ensure that all participants have an enjoy-able, safe and successful experi-ence, upon request we provide reasonable accommodations for individuals with disabilities. This includes, but is not limited to, adapted equipment and tech-niques, sign language interpreters, accessible facilities, and large print and Braille materials. It may be necessary to change a camper’s placement if the support, assis-tance and accommodation neces-sary for participation can best be provided at an alternate site. Contact the Therapeutic Recreation Office at [email protected], 703-228-4740 or TTY 703-228-4743 for more information.

Camps for all

Ages and Interests

Throughout the AC Summer Camp Catalog you’ll find camps for kids of all ages and abilities. To ensure fun, select a camp that meets your child’s interests, age and skill. See the chart on page 5 for age-appropriate camps.

Camps for Preschoolers (3-5) (page 6) are unique camps for little ones to stretch their wings and grow.

Elementary Kids (5-11) will find camps throughout all the camp categories…check out the options. Some camps offer great day-care options while others are short, sweet and quite the treat!

Teens (12-17) who are engaged over the summer have the most success during the school year…and in life. Arlington offers clas-sic, sports, arts and overnight camps for teens. Your teen may also enhance leadership skills by volunteering or enrolling in the award-winning T.E.A.M. program (page 17). Another option is to check out the Junior Jam programs at various centers (Page 7).

What you Wanna do this Summer?

there’s Something for everyone in

Arlington County!Summer was designed to give kids a break from school and help them try new experiences and grow mentally, physically and socially. Whether your child wants to refine a sports skill, go rafting, be in a play, play mind-adventure games, learn magic….or just plain hang, Arlington has something to offer.

Classic Camps (page 6) offer a variety of programming options, both structured and unstructured, that include art, sports, trips and more.

Overnight Camps (page 7) are a combo of a classic camp, nature/adventure camp and sleepover.

Nature, Adventure or History Camps (page 7) are for kids who love the outdoors and want to learn about and enjoy nature…and maybe stretch their limits with challenges such as canoeing, caving and more.

Creative Arts Camps (page 9) come in every shape and size, for those who want to learn to paint a picture, act in a play, throw a pot, sing a song and more!

Sports Camps (page 10) are available for the sports enthusiast who enjoys every sport in a sport combo camp, or for the camper who wants to learn or refine skills in a specific sport camp such as basketball or tennis.

Camps for Individuals with Disabilities (page 16) are camps specifically designed for individuals with physical, emotional, social or cognitive/mental challenges

Imagination Exploration Camps (page 18) bring kids with special interests in science, magic, history and imagination strategy games together.

Neighborhood-Based Outreach Programs (page 20) are community center-based programs for those who are looking for flexible, mid-day programs that will engage kids.

Fee ReduCtiOns:Don’t let fees be a barrier. Arlington County residents may request a fee reduction! It is highly recommended that fee reduction applications are processed PRIOR to registration. Fee reductions are available on a sliding scale based on household income and size. Annual income verification is required. Anyone who is an active financial assistance client of Arlington County’s Department of Human Services or APS free/reduced lunch program, as well as others who are below the threshold of the currently published HUD’s Section 8 income limits, is eligible for a reduced fee.

To qualify for fee reduction, bring proof of income (such as original free/reduced lunch letter from APS, WIC, SSI, SSDI, Section 8 Housing, or current tax forms) to receive 25%, 50% or 75% off. Also bring proof of identity and Arlington residency. Additional 10% discounts will be given for each sibling. Payment plans are also available.

Where it is! CamP FaCts 101Everyone can have a great time this summer, but not at another’s expense. All participants must follow directions and be respectful to fellow campers, staff, property, and program boundaries. While each camp has specific policies for each session, there are common policies among all Arlington camps. These policies were developed to be sure all kids are safe and have the best chance of an enriching and fun summer.

1. Children must wear appropriate clothing and shoes for the camp and its activities. Sandals are not allowed except on water days.

2. Children must bring their lunch to full day camps.

3. Caregivers should pick up a calendar of activities on the first day of each camp session on site.

4. Anyone enrolled in Summer Fun Centers, PRCR Camps and Nature Center Camps are automatically covered under a group accident policy.

5. Behavior resulting in extreme disruption or intentional harm to self, others or property can result in removal from the program at the discretion of program staff. Camp and playground counselors are trained to use supportive strate-gies and available resources to encourage positive participation as alternatives to removal.

6. Locations are subject to change (this catalog conveys the most correct information available before going to press). For updates, contact the registra-tion office at 703-228-4747 or log on to www.arlingtonva.us, search summer camp.

7. The Arlington County Board approves all camp fees. The goal is to provide programs for all County children. You may qualify for reduced fees. Call the Registration Office for more information 703-228-4747.

8. Camps with insufficient enrollment will be canceled. Registration staff will help direct families to comparable open programs.

9. To keep kids safe, summer programs will limit or cancel outdoor activities, or may even cancel programs, on “Code Red” days. Camper safety is the deciding factor.

10. Field trips are subject to change or cancellation due to inclement weather or if appropriate transportation is unavailable.

11. indicates an Arlington County camp. Use the registration form on page 23 to register for these camps only.

sCiensatiOnal PROsPeCtORs mysteRy ROCKYou are going to be a Prospector (you know those people who were always looking for gold). In this camp you will get to excavate for valuable gems, fascinating rocks, and some ancient fossils. All are yours to keep. What hidden wonders will you find? The identities of the 10 specimens found in your Mystery Rock have been kept a secret from you. You will experience the thrill of discovery, much as prospectors did. You will be able to identify each one. Your specimens are in a hard clay material the same as prospectors found. You will have to get them out without breaking or scratching them. That’s not that easy. You will get an excavation tool, specimen brush, log book, sorting trays and labels. You will, as a Prospector, record the color, both wet and dry texture, and its ability to float for each of the 10 specimens you dig out. CamP OPPORtunities FOR individuals witH disabilitiesArlington County maintains a philosophy of inclusion whereby individuals with disabilities are welcome to register for any program or camp. To ensure that participants have a positive experience, we have designated different general recreation camp sites as Inclusion Sites. Glebe and Fairlington Tot camps, McKinley Elementary Summerfest and Teen Summer Adventure are sites that receive additional services including a lower camp maximum, lower staff to camper ratio, and additional training for staff on program modifications and behavior management.

Everyone who requests an accommoda-tion through the Therapeutic Recreation Office for a general recreation camp or enrolls in Adventure Quest or Camp Discovery must complete an Accommodation Packet in addition to the registration forms on page 23. The Therapeutic Recreation Office will send the Accommodation Packet once your child is registered. Information provided in the Accommodation Packet allows PRCR to plan a successful experience for each camper, regardless of ability. Every effort is made to involve camp-ers in recreation programs that best suit their interests and abilities. Call the Therapeutic Recreation Office if you need recommendations on camps for your child. Note: the Therapeutic Recreation Office reserves the right to reassign campers if staff determines the camper would be served more effectively in another program.

Registration FactsArlington County camps are very popular. The sooner you register the more likely you will get the spot you want. Registrations will be processed to accommodate first and second choices. If an opening is not available, you can request a spot on a wait list. Print online registration confirmations using Adobe Acrobat 6.0 or higher. Tentative enrollment confirmations will be mailed until all paperwork is received. Please do not call for registration confirmations or changes prior to April 15. For more informa-tion refer to the Registration Changes and Refunds sections on this page. All required paperwork must be received no later than June 9 or campers may be un-enrolled and their spots given to those on the Wait List. Registrations will be accepted up to one week prior to the start date, if space is available. For late registration, all docu-ments must be delivered to the Registration Office no later than one week prior to the start of the camp session.

Campers with DisabilitiesParents and guardians must request accom-modations to the Therapeutic Recreation Office (703-228-4740) at least two weeks in advance of the program session if a child requires frequent reminders to participate, follow directions or stay with the group; requires assistance with dressing, feeding or toileting; or has difficulty managing anger. Please note this on the Camp Participant Information/Emergency Record form. This additional information is required in order to provide accommodations so that every participant will be successful in the chosen program. There is no additional fee for this service.

Non County Residents Fees and Registration DateArlington County Camps are very popular. Residents should register early to ensure spots. Non-resident registration for Arlington County camps begins March 16. Non-residents pay 50% more than the fee listed in the catalog.

How to Pay• All fees for Arlington County operated

camps must be paid in full by June 9. Households with an overdue balance from previous camps or classes must pay off their balance before registering a child for camp.

• Fee reductions up to 75% are available for qualifying residents. Call 703-228-4747 for more information or go to www.arlingtonva.us/prcr, keyword fee reduction.

• Checks and money orders may only be used with mail and walk-in registration. Checks are payable to Treasurer, Arlington County.

• On-line registration requires full payment by credit card at the time of registration. Fax, mail, call and walk-in registrations can pay in two installments; 50% is due at the time of registration. The remaining payment is due by June 9.

• The following credit cards can be used for every form of registration: American Express, Visa, MasterCard or Discover.

Discounts for FamiliesFamilies with more than one child in an Arlington County operated camp are eligible for a Family Discount. To receive a Family Discount, register your children and then contact the Registration Office after April 15 to receive the discount.

Fee Reductions:Don’t let fees be a barrier. Arlington County residents may request a fee reduction! It is highly recommended that fee reduction applications are processed PRIOR to registra-tion.

SEE PAGE 4 FOR FEE PROCESSING LOCATIONS AND HOuRS.

Registration ChangesAny Arlington County operated camp registration changes (such as cancellations, transfers or refunds) must be made through the PRCR Registration Office after April 15; do not wait until camp begins or ask camp or recreation center staff to process camp changes/cancellations. Only confirmed, writ-ten changes through the PRCR Registration Office are honored. Keep your confirmation number for reference when asking about any changes, transfers, refunds or billing ques-tions. Without a confirmation number (trans-action receipt number), registrants are held responsible for payment. The enrollment deadline for any given session ends at 5pm on the Monday prior to the beginning of the session.

Refunds Notify the Registration Office of any changes or cancellations as soon as possible after April 15 to ensure a Wait Listed child can join the program. Requests for refunds or changes for Arlington County camps must be received by the Registration Office no later than 5pm the Monday prior to the camp week to ensure a spot for a Wait Listed child. All refunds are subject to a $20 administrative charge per camp session. No refunds will be issued if you cancel after 5pm on the Monday prior to camp.

Volunteer! Arlington Loves Volunteers! If you are 13 or older, please join hundreds of other energetic and committed Arlingtonians and have fun while contributing your talents to the community. We need your support to assist staff with general interest, special interest and therapeutic recreation camps (volunteers are placed only at camps operated by the Department of Parks, Recreation and Cultural Resources, not in contract camps). Volunteers take a leadership role with the support of trained staff in all the fun and exciting activities campers enjoy, including field trips, arts and crafts, swimming, sing-alongs, games and much more! Whether you are seeking a personal or professional development opportunity or simply have a desire to work with young people, volunteering can be extremely rewarding. It is an opportunity to make friends, work with children in a supervised recreational setting and gain valuable experience in a leadership role. Remember, in order to be eligible for a paid Student Assistant in Arlington County camps, you must have been a volunteer with us for at least one summer. PRCR is not able to hire all of our volunteers, but we will not hire anyone in a student assistant position who has not been a volunteer.

guidelines FOR gReat vOlunteeR OPPORtunities:• Volunteers must be at least 13 and at least two years

older than the oldest camper in the program at which they are placed.

• Volunteers are not placed where they were campers the previous summer or where their family members are current campers.

• Volunteers must work for four weeks (they do not have to be consecutive weeks except in camps that have two-week or longer sessions). It may be possible to work additional weeks.

• Volunteers must work core program hours. Working more than the core hours is determined by the needs of the site. No one may volunteer more than eight hours a day.

• Our goal is to place volunteers near their home and in the programs of their choice. However, we can’t guarantee placements.

Ready to Apply? Call 703-228-4724 to request an application form or go to www.arlingtonva.us/prcr and click on “volunteer” to complete an application online.

(more correctly, basketball translates as “baloncesto”)
