    Narrative

IntroductionSince February 1967, Los Angeles Cadet Squadron 138 has served the communities

immediately East of the City of Los Angeles with a highly successful cadet program. The

squadron is justifiably proud of its long record of success in the community, inLos Angeles County Group 1, in California Wing and Civil Air Patrol.

MeetingsFrom 1982 to 2010, Los Angeles Cadet Squadronmet at the Marine Corps Reserve Training Center

in Pico Rivera. In late 2010, at the invitation ofPastor Antonio Lopez, Squadron 138 moved its

meetings to St. Pauls Lutheran Church in

Norwalk. It wasnt until early Spring 2011 that wedfully moved in and felt truly comfortable in our new

    surroundings.

MembershipWe gained two adult members during 2011. More impressively, the number of our active

cadet members almost doubled. In large part, this was due to the enthusiastic efforts if

Laura and Harrison Perez, parents of Cadet Edward Rosales, who placed CAP flyers atlibraries and teen centers throughout our squadron area.

AppointmentsSenior Member Anthony Lopez was appointed a Civil Air Patrol Chaplain.

PromotionsSenior Member Erick Castillo was promoted to Second Lieutenant. Senior Member

Anthony Lopez was promoted to Captain.

AwardsIn July, Los Angeles County Group 1 selected Lt Col Gamila

Mherian as the Cadet Programs Officer of the Year. Along withthe honor, she was presented the Civil Air Patrol CommandersCommendation.

In December, Cadet Chief Master Sergeant Nicole Franklindistinguished herself by earning the General Billy Mitchell Award,

first milestone award in the CAP Cadet Program. Group 1

Commander, Lt Col John Jay, presented the award certificate

and promoted her to Cadet Second Lieutenant.

In CAPs professional development program, 2nd Lt Erick Castilloearned the Benjamin Davis Award. Lieutenant Castillo also

earned the General Chuck Yeager Aerospace Award.

At the Wing Conference in August, Lieutenant Colonel Charles Wiest was presented a

Meritorious Service Award for his service to California Wing for the period 7 November2007 to 27 August 2011. Lieutenant Colonels Wiest and Gamile Mherian were awarded

Civil Air Patrols Meritorious Service Award for their multi-year support of the

International Air Cadet Exchange, helping meet and escort both CAP and internationalcadets during their stay in Washington, DC.

ActivitiesContinuing a 44-year tradition, Squadron 138 maintained its extremely busy and

varied activities program during 2011 (see 2011 Calendar), participating in 34

extra-curricular activities in addition to the regular weekly meetings. These

extracurricular activities supplemented the training conducted at squadronmeetings, and included orientation flights (both power and glider), aerospacefield trips, leadership training, emergency services training, community service

projects, as well as fun and social activities. A high percentage of the activeofficers and cadets regularly participated in these activities.

Squadron 138 continues to be active in the local community. Once again, the

squadron color guard presented colors at the opening ceremony of the annualKidsDay in Downey, and Fiestas Patrias in Santa Fe Springs. Members againjoined in the annual Veterans Day ceremony sponsored by the Allied VeteransCouncil, at Library Park in Monrovia. Again this year, they fully supported the

Memorial Day Tribute at Live Oak Memorial Park in Monrovia. Master ofCeremonies was Lt Col Wiest and officers and cadets participated in the

ceremony. Lieutenant Colonel Wiest also served as Project Officer and Master

of Ceremonies for the annual Gill Robb Wilson Memorial Ceremony at ForestLawn Covina Hills.

ConclusionLos Angeles Cadet Squadron 138 continues to offer its members and the

surrounding communities a well-structured, challenging and exciting program,

designed to develop young men and women who wil be an asset to our

community and nation. Its officers and cadets have set and maintain highstandards of appearance, conduct, positive attitude and active participation atall levels.
