We are fortunate to have a structured network of enthusiastic, dedicated citizens actively engaged in an effort to advance Lee’s Summit in key performance areas including economic development, education, health and human services, local government, quality of life and transportation. This citizen-led visioning effort is now being implemed. This is the City’s third strategic planning process, and is called Lee’s Summit 360°: Charting Tomorrow.

EVENTS AND ATTRACTIONS

With hundreds of acres featuring park land and lakes, festivals, trails, and attractions, fun is always at your fingertips in Lee’s Summit!

Lee’s Summit hosts a number of festivals throughout the year. The Lee’s Summit Chamber’s annual fall festival, Oktoberfest, is held each year the last weekend in September. An estimated 75,000 people attend the annual event, which includes a carnival, Biergarten, Kid’s Street, arts and crafts, continuous entertainment, authentic German meals and music, and, of course, grilled brats. Family Fun Days is a fundraising event for the Chamber’s Visitors Council, and is held the last full weekend in October at Paradise Park. Downtown Lee’s Summit Main Street (DLSMS) also sponsors many events throughout the year for visitors of all ages. Holiday lights and decorations make Downtown Lee’s Summit sparkle throughout November and December, drawing people f rom the ent i re metropolitan area for an enchanting holiday experience. Other events sponsored by DLSMS throughout the year include Downtown Days...Streets Alive!, Farmers Market, Piccadilly Gala, Bunny Hop, Music in the Park, and two favorites--the annual Halloween and St. Patrick’s Day Parades. These events and

others keep downtown the heart of the Lee’s Summit community. Downtown Lee’s Summit was honored with a Great American Main Street Award by the National Trust for Historic Preservation in 2010, and won seven Missouri Downtown Revitalization Awards in 2009-2010. Longview Art and World Music Festival features Summit Art artists, along with other juried local and regional artists, showcasing works of art in watercolor, oil, graphite, acrylic, pottery, sculpture, photography, pastels, fiber, mixed media and more. Paradise Park, Kansas City’s premier family destination, houses an Edutainment Center with a village, complete with a miniature grocery store, bank, art studio, puppet shows, a reading room, interactive kitchen, face painting, a massive sandbox for hunting fossils and a fish tank. Stonehaus Farms Vineyard and Winery provides a peaceful and quiet atmosphere, making it a great venue for receptions or other gatherings. Powell Gardens, Kansas City’s Botanical GardenTM, is set on more than 1,000 acres of lush, rolling hills just 20 miles east of Lee’s Summit on U.S. Highway 50. seems to be the motto when visiting Lee’s Summit. Recreational opportunities flourish in Lee’s Summit and Eastern Jackson County. Every type of outdoor activity you can imagine, from boating and fishing to golfing, disc golfing and hiking, are all right here.

With four lakes, an extensive park system, public golf courses and an assortment of other recreational facilities, Lee’s Summit has what it takes to satisfy your leisure time. You don’t have to drive any further than Lee’s Summit to enjoy the wide-open spaces, hike, go to the beach or take part in your favorite sport. You can find activities for every age and every season in Lee’s Summit.

The Lee’s Summit parks system consists of 27 parks comprising over 1,100 acres

with skate areas; volleyball, basketball and tennis courts; horseshoe pits; and playgrounds. Two of the busiest parks are Happy Tails off-leash dog park and the new Lea McKeighan Skate Park. Happy Tails features a walking trail, benches, landscaping, play and agility equipment for dogs and a neighborhood playground outside of the off-leash area. The skate park includes an in-ground cement skate/BMX feature, shaded area with bleachers and an open cement pad. There are also over 50 miles of interlacing trails throughout the community, with growth continuing as outlined in the Greenway Master Plan. The Lee’s Summit Parks and Recreation Department’s outdoor aquatic center, Summit Waves in Harris Park, features a 900 foot “action river”, children’s water playground, two water slides, six-lane lap pool, bath house, concession area and beautiful landscaping. Also housed within Harris Park is the Harris Park Community Center with rentable gym space and community rooms inside and a modern playground outside.

The 58,000 square-foot Legacy Park Community Center includes

an indoor zero-depth entry pool, lazy river, water slide, hot tubs, racquetball courts, fitness area, lockers, indoor walking track, gymnasium with two full-size playing courts, aerobics/dance room, and community rooms available for receptions, retreats and luncheons seating up to 275 people. The 700-acre Legacy Park facilities include a 12-field soccer complex, a 16-field baseball complex, an eight-field girl’s softball complex and a three-field youth football venue. Each complex includes restroom/concession facilities, parking, walkways and landscaping. The park also includes a five mile multi-use trail, an amphitheater and an 18-hold disc golf course.

The 18,000 square-foot multi-generational Gamber Center provides a place for active adults to interact, and hosts activities and events for the community at large. The facility offers a fitness center with personal training, an aerobics room, 12 station computer lab and arts and crafts rooms. Hot lunches are served Monday through Friday while the Bistro offers snacks and sandwiches during regular hours. It also houses the Shenendoah Ballroom, an elegant setting for special events, great for meetings and seats up to 200 people banquet style. The Gamber Center offers an outdoor area providing a Gazebo for visiting with friends, an outdoor patio, beautiful garden beds, a walking area and outdoor fitness equipment. The Lee’s Summit Municipal Airport is currently owned and operated by the City. It has two runways – one 4,000’ by 75’ and the other 3,800’ by 75 feet. The airport has 23 buildings and has many tie-down spots that house approximately 172 aircraft. The R-4 Blue Springs School District has a long-standing tradition of excellence in education and a superior commitment to students and staff. The district’s current enrollment stands at 14,284 students and includes children from Blue Springs, Grain Valley, Independence, Lake Tapawingo, and Lee’s Summit, as the district covers over 58 square miles.

The building at 123 S.E. Third St. known as Arnold Hall, has a long history of providing a place for the community to come together. It was the first place former President Harry S. Truman announced his bid to run for public offices, and until the new City Hall was built at 220 S.E. Green, it was the site where city council meetings were held. Most recently, it served as the community senior center until the Gamber Center was completed last year.

To restore Arnold Hall to its former glory, the Lee’s Summit Missouri Municipal Building Authority Board has launched a multi-million campaign called Encore for Arnold Hall to raise the funds needed to transform the historic building into a regional performing arts center.

Once the facility is completed, Martin City Melodrama — currently performing in Overland Park, Kan. — will be the company in residence. Melodrama performs year-round with six main-stage productions and three children’s productions, with attendance at over 35,000 patrons per year. Melodrama will be integral to the programming and productions at Arnold Hall, bringing an estimated 50,000 new people to downtown Lee’s Summit each year.

HISTORY OF

LEE’S SUMMIT

Over one hundred years ago, the small 11-block Town of Strother straddled the Missouri Pacific Railroad tracks. Today, that small town consists of 65-square miles and is known as the city of Lee’s Summit.

On October 28, 1865, William B. Howard founded the Town of Strother by filing a plat containing the 11 blocks that currently encompass the downtown business district. At the time of incorporation, the population count stood at 100. In November of 1868, the name was changed and the area incorporated as the “Town of Lee’s Summit.”

The “Summit” portion of the name was based on the fact that the town’s elevation is the highest point on the railroad between Kansas City and St. Louis, however there are numerous opinions and theories on the origin of “Lee.” According to one theory, the town was named after Civil War General Robert E. Lee, since incorporation took place shortly after the war and the majority of citizens migrated from the Southern states. However, another version suggests the town was named after a prominent early settler, Dr. Pleasant Lea. The discrepancy in the spelling of “Lea” has been attributed to railroad sign painters misspelling the word at the train depot, which would have been viewed by many.

Lee’s Summit’s most infamous citizen was Cole Younger, named “The Last of the Great Outlaws” by author Homer Croy. According to history, soldiers drove Younger to a life outside the law after his father’s murder. While Union forces were enforcing Order #11, (the command issued in 1862 to burn homes belonging to those with Southern ties) Younger and his brothers were credited with saving some of the original homes within Lee’s Summit, the most prominent

of which belonged to William B. Howard. Order #11 helped to unify the transplanted southern population in Missouri and compelled Younger to join the Confederate guerrilla band known as Quantrill’s Raiders. Cole Younger was arrested after an attempted bank robbery in Northfield, Minnesota. Following 25 years of imprisonment for his crimes, Cole Younger was paroled in 1901. Three years later, a reformed Younger returned to Lee’s Summit where he lived as a model citizen until his death in 1916. His grave is located in the Lee’s Summit Historic Cemetery.

The famous Lee’s Summit landmark, Longview Farm, was built as a summer home and a gentleman’s farm. Lumber baron, Robert A. Long, built what many feel is the world’s most beautiful farm. In this environment his daughter, Loula Long Combs, polished her equestrian skills, and became known worldwide as a premiere horsewoman. Today, the original mansion, barns and outbuildings have undergone restoration. The original Longview Farm Show Horse Arena has been completely remodeled inside, and gracefully restored outside to become the center of a new elementary school, Longview Farm Elementary. Classrooms for kindergarten through sixth grade are in this new building, designed to blend with

the historic character of the original arena. New Longview subdivision combines the rich history of Mr. R. A. Long’s magnificent Longview Farm with unique new homes, community shopping and lifestyle activities for residents of all ages. Recycling:The City of Lee’s Summit operates a

landfill/recycling center that is located at 2101 SE Hamblen Road. Hours of operation for the landfill are 8 a.m.–3 p.m., Monday through Friday and 8 a.m to 4 p.m. Saturdays. Hours of operation for recycling are 8 a.m.–4 p.m. Monday through Friday, and 9 a.m.– 3 p.m. on Saturdays. For additional information, call 816-969-1980. The Lee’s Summit North Recycling Center is located at the corner of Lee’s Summit Road and Colbern Road. Items to recycle at this location include paper, glass, cardboard and plastics.

When relocating from out of state, driver’s license testing is done at 1920 NE Independence Ave., or call 816-622-0720. For in-state driver’s license renewal, visit 196 NW Oldham Parkway the in Summit Shopping Center, or call 816-524-6464. For commercial driver’s license information, call 816-622-0718.
