WHAT TO LOOK FOR IN 2011Louisiana’s men’s and women’s track & field program saw a change in the fall of 2010 when Coach Charlie Mahfouz retired. Assistant Paula Ogunbanjo has stepped in on an interim basis overseeing a continuous climb in progress of the program.

Optimism is aplenty for the Ragin’ Cajuns as five student-athletes claimed eight conference titles in the Indoor and Outdoor Sun Belt Championships last season. Five others earned All-Conference distinction, while O’Daylon Thibeaux and Myles Melancon were named co-Outdoor Freshman Performers.

Nine of the 10 All-Conference selections return for Louisiana this season, including the reigning triple jump champion in Thibeaux. The Kaplan, La., native snagged two titles in the indoor and outdoor championships, while earning Most Outstanding Freshman Performer.

Among other returning champions for the men include senior and Lafayette native Antwain Keyes. Last season, he clinched an indoor title in the high jump and narrowly missed the outdoor championship, placing second.

Melancon’s throwing skills marks him as one of the Sun Belt’s up-and-coming field performers after clinching the men’s outdoor shot put title last season. His performance in the outdoor meet allowed him to earn co-Most Outstanding Freshman Performer. Senior Louis Stevens will look to repeat his indoor title in the men’s 55-meter hurdles.

On the women’s side, Jasmine Anderson brings back plenty of championship-level experience, claiming three All-Conference accolades during the 2010 campaign. The senior earned runner-up in the women’s indoor 55-meter hurdles before claiming All-Conference marks in the outdoor’s 100-meter and 400-meter hurdles.

Louisiana’s men have dominated the throwing events in recent memory. In addition to Melancon, Jacob Domingue Albert Fournette III and Tyler Guidry each earned All-Conference distinction in the shot put last season. Garett Harkless also earned conference accolades in the weight throw in 2010.

“We are a young and growing team,” said Ogunbanjo. “There are a lot of returning conference champions as well as newcomers that will step up and make an immediate difference on our team. Although we are young there are several state and district champions on our roster that should make a surprise leap during our indoor and outdoor seasons”.

    SCHEDULE

As with any sport, the better competition you face, the better you will become. The 2011 Indoor and Outdoor schedule provides a solid balance that gives Louisiana an opportunity to be successful and compete for a Sun Belt Conference Championship.

The Cajuns open the 2011 indoor season at the Texas A&M Conference Challenge on Jan 15. Two weeks later, they face a highly competitive field at the Houston Invitational. In February, the Cajuns compete in their only meet in Louisiana at the Jeff Davis Bank McNeese Invite on the 5th.

Seven days later on the 11th and 12th, UL visits the Palmetto State for the Clemson Tiger Paw Invitational before wrapping up the indoor season at the Sun Belt Championships in Jonesboro, Ark. Louisiana opens the outdoor season at the McNeese Cowboy Relays on March 12.

The Ragin’ Cajuns will host one of two home meets with the Louisiana Classics on March 18-19. The following weekend, UL visits Baton Rouge for the LSU Relays on March 25-26.

On April 6-9, the Cajuns participate in the prestigious Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays in Austin. Louisiana returns to Baton Rouge for a one-day meet on the 23rd for the LSU Alumni Gold before closing out the regular season at home with the Cole-Lancon Twilight on the 30th.

The Sun Belt Conference Outdoor Championships will be held in Murfreesboro, Tenn., on May 13-15.

    OgunBanjopaula

    interim head coachOklahoma State, 2005

    Fourth Season

Paula Ogunbanjo, who joined the Louisiana Track & Field program as an assistant in 2007, was named the interim head coach for the Ragin’ Cajuns in Jan. 2011.

She replaced former head coach Charlie Mahfouz, who retired in October 2010.

“I am blessed to have the opportunity of being the interim head track and field coach at UL,” said Ogunbanjo. “I look forward to what is in store for this program and this University. I know that the best is yet to come”.

The Houston native has coached jumps and sprints in her previous three seasons at UL. The Cajuns have flourished in three seasons under Ogunbanjo’s direction as she has coached eight athletes to a combined 25 All-Sun Belt Conference honors in three different jumping events.

In 2008, Ogunbanjo oversaw Taryn Simmons’ progression to the NCAA Preliminary Championships in the 400-meter hurdles. The Ragin’ Cajuns were well represented in the 2009 campaign when Antwain Keyes (high jump), Jasmine Manuel (triple jump) and Simmons (400-meter hurdles) competed in the NCAA Preliminary Championships in Louisville, Ky.

Last season, the Cajuns had yet another impressive showing with Jasmine Manuel (triple jump) and O’Daylon Thibeaux (triple jump) at the 2010 NCAA Preliminary Championships in Greensboro, N.C.

Thibeaux along with teammate Myles Melancon were named co-recipients of the 2010 Outdoor Sun Belt Track & Field Freshmen of the Year award.

    Under Ogunbanjo’s direction, Keyes

continues to develop as a leading performer in the Sun Belt Conference. Keyes is the reigning indoor champion in the men’s high jump and holds a personal best mark of 2.14 meters. Thibeaux has also showed vast improvements under Ogunbanjo’s tutelage winning both indoor and outdoor championships in the triple jump during his freshmen season. Thibeaux competed in the 2010 USA Junior National Track and Field Championships where he placed third with a jump of 15.58 meters.

Other Ragin’ Cajuns event performers have also been successful since Ogunbanjo’s arrival in 2007. Among those has been Chris Roy, winner of back-to-back Sun Belt outdoor pole vaulting championships (2009-2010). Roy placed seventh nationally at the 2010 NCAA Indoor Championships in Fayetteville, Ark., and ranked sixth in the NCAA East Region in the outdoor pole vault event last season.

Prior to joining the staff at Louisiana, Ogunbanjo served as a graduate assistant coach at Emporia State in the Mid-American Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) Conference (2005-2007). She helped guide several ESU jumpers to All-American status and recruited top level athletes into the program.

As an athlete, Ogunbanjo competed at Oklahoma State, where she held the outdoor school record in the triple jump and still holds the indoor school record. Ogunbanjo received seven All-Big 12 honors in the triple jump and placed 18th in
