MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIRMAN ESTHER FRENKIEL & THE PRESIDENT SHLOMO WERDIGER

UIA ROSH HASHANAH EDITION 02/03

Esther Frenkiel Chairman UIA Victoria

As Rosh Hashana draws near, we would like to thank all of our donors and volunteers for their dedication and support of the 2011 Victorian Campaign.

During the Ten Days of Teshuvah, we give particular focus to 3 deeds; “teshuvah, tefillah and tzedakah” which commonly translates as “repentance, prayer and charity.” However, these deeds embody far more than this literal translation. The true meaning of these acts can be juxtaposed to a person returning to his true self through teshuvah, achieving union with G-d through tefillah and acting justly and righteously through tzedakah.

We will once again be holding our annual Kol Nidrei Appeal, and call on your continued support and generosity. This year our appeal will focus on youth-at-risk in Israel and we ask that you take a moment during this time of self-reflection to re-evaluate your commitment to the people of Israel. Our actions in reaching out to our fellow Jews in need demonstrates that we have truly fulfilled the essence of “teshuvah, tefillah and tzedakah.” Our thoughts are with our fellow Jews in Israel and we hope that they too will enjoy the approaching year 5772 within safe and protected borders.

We would like to wish you and your families a Chag Sameach - a sweet and healthy new year.

Earlier this year, Keren Hayesod (KH) released a new official logo for all UIA branches around the world. The premise for this new logo stemmed from the need to create a uniform design language for marketing materials, the website and any other means through which the KH-UIA brand is publicised. It was decided that the time was right to update and renew the current logo from a graphic and typographic standpoint and to give it more modern graphic lines.

At UIA Victoria we have now adopted this logo as our own, with the word ‘Victoria’ added to fit our particular needs.

It is hoped that the Melbourne Jewish community in general, and particularly our

donors, will recognize the essence of what we are about through this new logo.

The primary objective of the UIA is to raise funds for KH-UIA, in order to support Olim and youth-at-risk who struggle with poverty, destitution and distress by providing them with new opportunities. At KH-UIA Israel’s national priorities, as set by the Prime Minister’s office, are our top priorities. Our work is about strengthening Israeli society and given that our efforts are on a global scale, it is hoped that this new logo transmits this message.

A powerful brand identity is paramount to us and we hope that this new image, incorporating both Hebrew and English

will send a message of confidence and professionalism in the work we do. The strategic basis for this new design emphasises KH-UIA as the largest organization raising funds for the State of Israel, working in cooperation with the government of Israel and at the same time being an Israeli brand with a global presence.

MARK LEIbLER AC AWARDED THE GOLDSTEIN PRIZE

FEATURES

Earlier this year at the June Conference, Israel’s President Shimon Peres presented Former Chairman of the KH-UIA World Board of Trustees, Mark Leibler AC, with the 2011 Goldstein Prize for Distinguished Leadership - KH-UIA’s most prestigious award. In an exclusive interview with KH, Mark discusses his passion for Israel and the connection of the Australian community to Israel. Here are some highlights...

How would you characterize the trends among the Jewish people in the last decades, since you became involved?

One of the biggest problems over the past decades is that too many Jews take the existence of Israel for granted. They do not understand that their quality of life as Jews and their ability to hold their heads high in the Diaspora is largely due to the existence of the State of Israel. The other thing that has considerably worsened over the years is the attempt to delegitimize Israel. It goes further than simple anti-Zionism - it is a form of anti-Semitism. The creation of Israel is portrayed as a criminal act - the State is something that has to be eradicated. This has made inroads in too many places in the world and something that we as Jews have to be conscious of and to fight. So it’s a different world in which we live today, a world where news travels much faster that it did decades ago and damage can be caused much more quickly. These are things that we, as Jews and Zionists, have to take into account and that we have to counter and be conscious of.

The Australian community, your community, is a very special one. How do you view it?

The Australian Jewish community is a unique community. One of the things that makes it unique is the fact that, outside of Israel,

there is a larger percentage of Holocaust survivors, with their children and families, in Australia than in any other Diaspora Jewish community. The other characteristic is that we are, of course, geographically far from Israel, but it is like an elastic band: the more you stretch it, the tighter it becomes. The bonds and the linkages between the Australian Jewish community and Israel are very strong. A huge proportion of our young people go and spend time in Israel, on long and short-term programs; it’s the accepted thing to do nowadays. We are also a very strongly Zionist community. If you look at KH, for example, Australia provides more “free money” to the core budget of the Jewish Agency than any other Jewish community, and that is something that, as a former President the Australian Federal KH-UIA, I’m extremely proud of. We also have a very large proportion of our children attending Jewish day schools, and nearly all of them have an orientation towards Israel and Zionism – certainly a great majority of them do – so Australia is in many senses a very special community, particularly when it comes to its relationship with Israel.

MAZAL TOV TO THE bEN YAKIR b’NEI MITZVAH bOYS

Most of the boys who enter the Ben Yakir Youth Village come from disadvantaged backgrounds, preventing them from holding an event such as their Bar Mitzvah. The village provides them with an opportunity to celebrate and mark this special occasion through a number of exciting events such as a trip to Jerusalem, a ceremony at the Kotel, a festive lunch and a magnificent ceremony of Bar Mitzvah boys from Youth Villages across Israel. They also participate in a jeep ride to the north and a magical Bar Mitzvah Shabbat with their families. This year 27 boys celebrated their Bar Mitzvah through this wonderful initiative.

By far the most important event was an extremely moving party for all boys and their families. The kids performed on stage in an impressive show, singing a song dedicated

to their mothers. Chairman of the Jewish Agency Natan Sharansky, among other respectful guests attended.

Hod Yehoshua, a counsellor at Ben Yakir who guided the boys through this project says that, “I feel that I have received a big opportunity to guide these amazing kids at a very challenging age in a process of maturity and to be with them in all these moments - the hard and hurtful as well as the moments of success and satisfaction.”

A CHAT WITH DR ADA bEN-SASSON

AN INTERESTING MIDDLE EAST UPDATE FROM DR MICHAEL RUbIN

United Israel Appeal and the Friends of Hebrew University held a joint function with special guest speaker Dr Ada Ben-Sasson,

General Director of the Central Israeli district in the leading Health Maintenance Organisation in Israel. Deputy Editor of the Australian

Jewish News, Naomi Levin facilitated the evening which also included a presentation on Ada’s work.

AIJAC, UIA and ZCV held an open forum in June with Middle East Expert Dr Michael Rubin at Beth Weizmann. Dr Rubin discussed the current situation in the Middle East, the nuclear regime and particularly how the situation in Turkey has changed.

Traditionally considered Israel’s friends, Dr Rubin expressed his concern with the freedom of press in Turkey which is directly linked to incitement against Israel, resulting in predetermined confrontations. Furthermore, Turkey is now considered the most Anti-

American country with only 9% of people having positive thoughts about America according to a recent study. His address was followed by an interesting Q & A session.

Earlier this year Catchoftheday.com.au co-founder Gabby Leibovich addressed a sold out UIA boardroom lunch, hosted by the Royal Bank of Scotland. Gabby spoke about his journey from Israel

to Australia where he completed VCE at Mount Scopus. He also spoke about James Packer and Co’s $80m purchase of 40% of Catchoftheday. Gabby jokingly said that he did not have any kind of ‘7 steps to success’ to impart on the audience.

He summarised his success stating that by keeping margins low, they are able to sell a large volume of products as part of their ‘1 deal a day’ deal.

UIA and JBD (Jews of the CBD) held a joint business boardroom lunch last month with special guests from Israel Reuven Ben-Shalom and his brother.* The lunch was generously hosted by Schetzer, Brott & Appel.

“Global Young Leadership - Where are we heading?” was the theme for the Volunteers Dinner held on 30th August. YoungUIA Chairman David Boyar MC’d the evening which included a special presentation on the recent Young Kesher Conference in Israel by the new YoungUIA

Vice Chairman Michael Cohen. Michael discussed his future goals in this new role and the direction he sees YoungUIA heading.

Volunteers also heard from special guest speakers Reuven Ben-Shalom, an IDF Pilot and his brother*, who both wowed

the audience with their career stories. The evening paid tribute to the wonderful work of our many volunteers across all the UIA divisions who dedicate their time to ensure a successful campaign.

Charles Freilich, former Israeli Deputy Security Adviser, recently addressed UIA Major Donors at an event hosted at the home of Vivienne Fried. Freilich captivated the audience with a special briefing on the Arab Spring and particularly the implications

for the State of Israel. Today Freilich is an International Security Program Senior Fellow at the Harvard Kennedy School’s Belfer Center for Science and International Affairs, where he has recently completed a book on Israeli national security decision-making

processes. His primary areas of expertise are the Middle East, U.S.-Middle East policy, and Israeli national security policy. He is an Adjunct Professor of political science at Harvard, New York, Columbia, and Tel Aviv Universities.

Hayley Southwick and her son Tyler at the Ben Yakir Youth Village

A B C D

Women’s Division Chair Hayley Southwick thought it was important to take her family to see UIA’s projects as part of her recent trip to Israel.

They visited the new Outdoor Fitness Centre at the Ben Yakir Youth Village which was recently built from the generous support of the Australian Federal Women’s

Division. They enjoyed a private lunch and a special presentation about the social and educational programs. After touring the village they played with the animals at the Animal Therapy Centre and met with some of the youth who shared their personal stories.

Numerous phone canvassing sessions, including the annual Super Sunday Appeal, have been held in recent months to raise funds for the Youth Futures Project. Volunteers

have worked tirelessly and it has been wonderful to see so many school students involved. We always welcome students to assist us in our fundraising activities as part

of their community service requirements. If you can assist the Women’s Division with phoning, contact Ilana on 9272 5533.

UIA’s focus in 2011 is ‘youth-at-risk.’ primarily aged 6-12, these youth struggle with everyday life, come from broken homes and live below the poverty line. Through

individually tailored care, UIA, in a partnership with Keren Hayesod, currently assists over 10,000 disadvantaged youth in 32 localities in Israel. What began 6 years ago as a pilot project has grown significantly and with your support we can continue to:

1. Strengthen the child’s self image2. Improve academic performance3. Improve social behaviour4. Increase access to community resources

Proudly supporting the Youth Futures Program...“My Counsellor gives me a lot of

strength and helps me solve problems. I have learnt to overcome difficulties and succeed in school. I got 100% in English. Today, I feel I can solve

problems by myself.” chen, 11, Youth futures participant

MISSION REUNIONMelbourne mission participants reunited at the home of Helen and Norman Weiss. They enjoyed a beautiful lunch, reminisced and watched a DVD produced by Norman. The mission provided a unique opportunity for all involved and long lasting and special bonds have been created.

A BA first time landing in Israel was bound to be a stirring moment. Within hours there was a two minute silence for the Shoah, a one minute silence for Yom Hazikaron followed by Yom Ha’atzmaut celebrations.

Visiting an Amigour sheltered housing program was particularly emotional with a concert by survivors of WW2 who performed Russian and Yiddish songs. Translators revealed personal struggles in Siberia and Auschwitz showing pride in their survival and new community.

Resettlement programs for African youth represent a challenge to immigrant parents and officials. The Mission included museums, historical sites, a sound and light show, memorials, exhibits, ecological

research, guest speakers, the symbolism of the Supreme Court and new kibbutz life (moshavim).

The stereotype of abruptness, pushiness and disrespect was not evident. The confidence, politeness, enthusiasm and expression of young Israelis particularly impressed me. The theme for the Mission was “never sit down to a meal hungry”. I can say with absolute confidence that there is no breakfast in the world like an Israeli breakfast.

The depth of experience gained in this tour does not seem available from touring any other way. Sharing this experience is one way in which participants become ambassadors for the cause.

ZYC bOGRIM SEMINAR

Over the past few months, YoungUIA has focused on increasing their “fans” on Facebook by providing incentives for people to ‘follow’ them. They sought the support of local businesses and each week have been giving away a new prize to one of their facebook fans. Thank you to the following:

Follow us on Facebook www.facebook.com/YoungUIA

It has been 4 months since I came on board as the new YoungUIA Vice Chairman, and my motivation and enthusiasm for YoungUIA has only grown. I have recently returned from Israel where I participated in the KH Young Leadership Kesher Conference. It was a fast paced adventure and a celebration of Jewish people hood, as I joined 42 other young leaders from around the world. The gathering combined a hands-on KH experience with discussions and workshops enabling us to learn new skills and gain fresh tools while being exposed to some of today’s foremost thinkers and leaders.

The participants were diverse and gave an overview of the activities and methods employed by their countries. It helped open my eyes to new ideas for my role and how to go about achieving them.

As a person who was born in Israel, and been back 9 times, I have never felt as strong a connection or been as proud of Israel’s achievements as I am now post the Kesher conference.

Welcoming a plane full of new Ethiopian Olim as they came through the gates of Ben Gurion airport was an experience that is hard to describe. Volunteering at KH’s revolutionary Youth Futures Centre for youth-at-risk at Kiryat Gat was another highlight for me. It was wonderful interacting with the kids there and being part of the process to help them build a better future.

I have come back from Israel feeling even more inspired, motivated and ready to hit the ground running. Some of the objectives for YoungUIA over the next few months include a re-branding of the division, the recruitment of new and passionate volunteers and enhancing our fundraising skills and avenues.

Shana Tova to you and your families and stay tuned for some great upcoming events.

MESSAGE FROM THE NEW VICE CHAIRMAN MICHAEL COHEN

Young Leadership and Engagement Coordinator Stefan Oberman recently spoke at the “Hagshama Festival” run by the Australian Zionist Youth Council. Representing NextUIA, Stefan spoke to the youth movement bogrim about all the different ways to get involved with UIA. The students

were genuinely interested in furthering their involvement with the community after they leave their respective youth movements. Stefan hopes that they will continue their support for Israel through UIA.

SCHOOL EDUCATION

STUDENT LEADERSHIP FORUM

MESSAGE FROM THE ExECUTIVE DIRECTOR AMIT TZUR-TAL

“It is possible to change the world – even if it’s only one person at a time” was the underlying theme of the UIA Student Leadership Forum. Over 3 weeks, students from The King David School, Mount Scopus Memorial College, Leibler Yavneh College and UJEB heard from high profile speakers Sir Gustav Nossal AC, Michael Danby MP, David Southwick MP and Evan Thornley. The speakers explored a variety of topics including Israel advocacy,

innovation, and ‘change leadership’. To consolidate what the students heard from the speakers, two of the three weeks saw Jewish Aid Australia and AIJAC facilitate highly engaging and interactive sessions. The Forum, now in its second year and building off the success of the 2010 Forum, has continued to attract high profile Australian leaders. Forum coordinator Stefan Oberman said “the difference between this

program and a Hadracha Course, is that the Forum is almost exclusively about inspiring and unlocking the student’s interests through actively engaging with prominent high achieving Australians. The Forum is just as much about showing the students that they can change the world as it is about showing them how they can become positive change makers through leading by example within their own social networks.

It was Rabbi Noah Weinberg who said “people often avoid making decisions out of fear of making a mistake. [However], the failure to make decisions is one of life’s biggest mistakes.” The decision my family and I made to move to Melbourne is perhaps one of the biggest decisions we have ever had to make. I have been overwhelmed by the warmth and generosity expressed towards my family by the UIA community, especially as we approach our first Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur outside of Israel.

One of my main objectives as UIA Shlicha and Executive Director has been to educate the next generation of Melbourne’s Jewish community about the importance of Tzedakah and the vital work of KH-UIA. Working together with UIA’s Young Leadership and Engagement Coordinator Stefan Oberman, we have devised and are currently implementing UIA’s new education and engagement program. The program sees Jewish students learn about the vital work that UIA does in Israel through various interactive ‘peulot’ (programs), competitions, campaigns and forums. Our education outlook places an emphasis on creating a conversation with students rather than a one sided dialogue.

In an age of Google, Facebook and Wikipedia, the community’s tech savvy youngsters have the entire world’s shared knowledge at their finger tips. As such, our primary mission is not to disseminate information, but rather to give it meaning and relevance.

I look forward to continuing and growing our relationship with the future generation of our community through meaningful and engaging education and social justice initiatives.

The message brought to the ZYC Jamboree participants was clear. UIA cares deeply for Israel - therefore we all must care for UIA. Through an interactive session, participants drew on their passion for Israel as they devised campaigns that would connect young Jews to UIA. Ideas stemming from the session were unique and a testament to the strong future leadership fostered by our youth movements. The students’ ideas will be presented to the UIA cabinet.

SHITTIM SCHOOL DELEGATION VISIT TO AUSTRALIA

The Partnership2Gether program aims to deepen reciprocal relations between the two communities in Australia and the Central Arava Region.

At the forefront of this program is the annual delegation of Year 10 students from the Shittim School in the Arava. Students were hosted by Bialik College families for a week in

Melbourne last month, preceded by a week in Sydney. An important part of this visit is the interaction with students from the Jewish Day Schools. Another objective was to expose the students to a variety of educational and social experiences as well as the many expressions of Jewish life and thoughts in our community.

Highlights included a welcome brunch hosted at the home of Nicky and Peter Worth and a beautiful Kabbalat Shabbat Service conducted at the home of Rabbi Schnuer Waks.

We have had wonderful feedback from all students, parents and staff involved.

MAZAL TOV TO THE FOLLOWING WHO CELEbRATED THEIR SMACHOT WITH ISRAEL

After 15 years, a new partnership brand was officially launched at the 5th International Partnership Conference after a consensus was reached that change was essential. The Partnership embarked on a branding journey with one of Israel’s

leaders in the field, Yoram Rubinger who developed our “Partnership2Gether” brand.

We are proud of the branding “tool kit” that each Partnership is being equipped with. We thank the more than 70 volunteers

and professionals who voted on the name – Partnership2Gether (P2G) which received close to 80% of the votes.
