Along with over 130 booths showcasing multitudes of ideas for your home projects, garden and landscape displays, six houses entered in the second annual SICBA playhouse competition, surplus materials sale, we have added the Pacific Party Canopies Arena over the new SICBA Stage where we will be hosting Andy Wappler on Friday, home
improvement seminars all day Saturday and Ciscoe Morris on Sunday. We have paired the playhouses with the garden displays to create the Home and Garden Show Playhouse neighborhood.
Don’t forget that Friday is half price day and with paid admission on Friday, you will receive a free pass for one other weekend day. All attendees will be eligible to win one of the three grand prizes: deluxe Primo Grill from Craft Stove; french door refrigerator from

Serving Whatcom & Skagit Counties for 15 Years
The Skagit/Island Counties Builders Association is again planning an old-time, bargain-by-the-minute building material surplus sale for the 2011 SICBA Home & Garden Show.
The event is scheduled at 1 PM on Saturday, March 19, in the pavilion at the Skagit County Fairgrounds. In past years, this has been a big hit with local residents and do-it-yourselfers.
The fairgrounds pavilion is a large facility allowing plenty of space for a diverse selection of quality bargains to be purchased. In years past, tons of materials have been sold in as little as two hours. Bargain prices are guaranteed on lumber, doors, trim and other building and remodeling materials.
The sale begins promptly at 1 PM in the pavilion. SEE YOU THERE!

Ciscoe Morris is well known in the media. KING5 TV airs his popular gardening segments with Meeghan Black as well as his weekly show “Gardening with Ciscoe”. His Friday night Q & A show, ‘Gardening with Ciscoe Live’ broadcasts on Northwest Cable News, Ciscoe also makes regular appearances on ‘Gardening by the Yard’ on the Home and Garden cable network. You can also catch his gardening advice mixed with a hearty dose of humor every Saturday morning on News Talk 97.3 KIRO FM. His book, ‘Ask Ciscoe’ was among the top selling garden books nationwide. In addition, he co-authored books on roses and perennials, and he also writes a weekly garden column in the Thursday edition of the Seattle Times. Ciscoe is crazy about dogs and gardening, and he can often be found working with his pooches, Fred and Ruby, in his Seattle garden which has been featured in several publications. Ciscoe’s other passion is travel, and despite his busy schedule, he manages to find time to lead garden tours to countries all over the world.

Andy Wappler joined Puget Sound Energy in February 2008 as part of the utility’s effort to communicate the need for renewable energy and energy efficiency in order to meet the challenge of climate change. Certified by the American Meteorological Society, he is a graduate of the University of Washington and of Northwestern University. By making some simple changes at home, he and his family have cut their electricity use by nearly 40 percent, and their natural gas use by as much as 10 percent.Andy will be talking about easy ways to live greener and save money through simple steps to save energy at home. His talk will also touch on a few emerging technologies that are popular, including solar at home and what it takes to put an electric car in your garage.

Green. Sustainable. Energy Efficient. Terms commonly
used these days to talk about home improvements and appliances. But what do these terms mean and why should you be interested in making your home green, sustainable, or energy efficient?
All three concepts focus on improving how your home uses water, electricity, and gas in order to increase comfort, save money, and conserve natural resources. Your home is one of your most valuable assets and the place where you spend the most time. Therefore, increasing comfort and saving money yield great returns for any homeowner. But how can you prevent energy (and money) from slipping through the cracks?
Understand your home’s performance and find energy and water saving opportunities:
Home performance is how efficiently your home uses water and energy. To better understand your home’s performance, you or a building analyst should conduct an energy assessment. An energy assessment will help determine the efficiency of your home’s performance and identify energy and water saving opportunities.
If you are interested in conducting an assessment yourself, you can find advice on conducting assessments on the Department of Energy’s Energy Savers website,

You can also contact a building analyst who will look at your home’s performance by completing a walkthrough and performing building tests. Puget Sound Energy offers access to trained and certified building analysts and provides financial support through its HomePrint program, www.pse.com/homeprint.
Energy assessments may include a rating, such as a Home Energy Rating System (HERS) score or
an Energy Performance Score (EPS). Scoring your home before and after you implement energy efficiency actions will provide information on the effectiveness of your actions. Homebuyers can also use these scores to determine a home’s energy efficiency. Compare your home’s energy use to homes nationwide by collecting your utility bills and using Energy Star’s Home Energy Yardstick (a free online tool).
Make a plan and take
action:
Your home energy assessment will likely suggest many low cost energy savings opportunities that will sound familiar to you. You may be advised to use compact fluorescents, turn down your water heater, or install programmable thermostats.
Reducing water use will not only shrink your water bill, but your energy bill too. Heating water requires lots of energy. Additionally,

rain gardens and rain barrels can be used to reduce the amount of water you use outside (Skagit Public Utility District, www.skagitpud.org, has more information).
Your home energy assessment may advise you to make improvements to your home where using a contractor is advisable. For these improvements, look for contractors with training and expertise. You can ask for information on how they are able to prove that their actions
improved a home’s energy efficiency. Rating systems can help understand how improvements changed a home performance.
Energy efficiency helps ensure the sustainability and economic resilience of the Skagit County community— home improvements support local businesses, reduce our dependence on energy, save money, and improve comfort. Since demand for energy will continue to grow, energy efficiency is the cheapest and most
readily available source of energy for the future of our community. Join your neighbors who are already improving the energy efficiency of their homes by committing to evaluate and reduce your home’s energy and water use. Learn more about Skagit County’s sustainability initiative at www.skagitcounty.net/sustainability.

The shortest answer to this question might be the one
found in the National Green Home Building Standard, published by the National Association of Homebuilders. This publication describes a building method called the Whole House Approach.

“The Whole House Approach means that every system must be considered in relation to every other system in a house to build an efficient, more comfortable, safer, and more sustainable home.” Unfortunately, this short description may not provide you the answers you are looking for as a consumer. You want to know “What will a Built Green® home do for me?”
As members of YOUR local building industry, we are doing our best to provide you with homes
that are more durable, more considerate of our local environment, more comfortable and safe, and cost less to operate over their lifetime. So, how do we achieve all that? We start by encouraging all of our local builders, their suppliers, and sub-contractors to join the SICBA Built Green® program. This program was developed based on models of similar programs in other areas, but was carefully tailored to meet the specific needs of our Skagit and Island counties
communities. Our program offers training sessions for builders to familiarize them with more of the resources that are available within our own community, as well as offering more in-depth classes dealing with the specific means and methods for building Built Green® homes. Every member begins with an orientation, designed to teach them how to use the hundreds of available features on the Built Green® checklist to

properly rate their homes to the “star level” they wish to achieve. They are also provided with an extensive homebuilder guide, providing complete explanations for each listed item on the Built Green® checklist.
The five “star levels” of the program are designed as an easy to recognize measuring tool, indicating the different levels of effort and achievement put into each individual home. The one-star rating is a basic entry level into the world of Built Green®. Achievement
at this level indicates that a builder has met certain minimum standards over and above code, and that he has engaged in the Built Green® thought process. Each subsequent star level indicates a higher level of involvement, and more and more achievement of green building principles. The first three levels are self-certified by the builder. The four-star and five-star levels are much more intense, and therefore require the services of an approved Built Green® verifier. The
verifier provides third-party certification that all of the items on the checklist have been properly executed.
There is no one way to “Build Green”. Each potential building site is unique, with different possibilities and problems. Some of the unique features might include the slope of the property, the orientation to the street, how large the parcel is, is it in town, or rural, is it treed, or bare. Each family also has their own

individual needs, such as is the house for a family of six, or for an elderly couple? Do they have a lot of big toys, like boats or other recreational equipment needing seasonal storage? The SICBA Built Green® program was developed in a way that allows the builder and the homeowner to decide which of the hundreds of listed Built Green® features, materials or methods to include in their project. The program requires a minimum number of points in each
of the major categories: Site and Water, Energy Efficiency, Health and Indoor Air Quality, and Materials Efficiency. The program also requires a much larger total number of points for each star level, allowing the owner and builder to select the areas of most importance to them. Thus, if energy efficiency is of the most importance to your family, you can select more of the checklist items that will improve your homes energy efficiency, and less of the others, to
achieve the total point value and star level you might be striving for.
So, back to the original question, “What will a Built Green® home do for me?” A properly designed and constructed Built Green® home will do what you want it to do. It will be more efficient in the areas you want it to be, it will be more durable, healthier and safer to live in, while having a lower overall impact on the natural environment around you, all in the proportions you choose!

Now in its second year, SICBA’s Annual Playhouse
Competition again has six playhouses entered. Last year’s unique designs and quality construction garnered nearly $18,000 for six local charities. Having seen the six playhouses entered this year, I can see no reason why the local charities shouldn’t be anticipating great rewards again this year.
For this year’s show, we brought the playhouses together with our garden display companies and
will have them on display together. From the conversations I have heard, this pairing has some exciting possibilities for both parties involved.

Wild Mushroom and Nettle RisottoLocal recipe from Jodie Buller of Skagit Valley Food Co-opfrom “Serving the Skagit Harvest”
1 full produce size bag of freshly picked, new-growth nettle tops3 tablespoons butter (divided)4 strips bacon, sliced lengthwise and diced (optional)6 to 10 fresh mushroom, sliced how you like1 onion or leek (white part only) finely chopped4 cups chicken or vegetable stock2 cups Arborio riceGrated Parmesan or Asiago, or your favorite soft cheese(Cambozola cheese is my personal recommendation for this dish)Salt and pepper to taste
Wearing thick plastic gloves, wash and drain the nettle tops, removing the thickest stalks. Sweat down the nettle in a pan with a tablespoon of butter for about 4 minutes (they will wilt just like spinach) and then drain them through a colander, chop them, and put them aside. If you are using bacon, fry it up in a pan right about now. Add the mushrooms when the bacon is close to done. If you aren’t using bacon, sauté the mushrooms in a tablespoon of butter. Then remove from the heat.

Washington Paint Specialistsis a Full Service Company with 21+ Years of Painting Experience. We specialize in interior & exterior, new
construction, repaints and fine finish mill work, from homes to apartment complexes.
Environmentally Safe Products Available.
While you chop the onion, heat the stock until just below boiling. In a large, heavy-bottom pan, sweat the onion over medium heat with a tablespoon of butter until translucent, and then turn up the heat to medium-high and toss in the rice and toast in butter. Once the butter is absorbed, add a ladle of stock to the pan. Stir the rice continuously while it absorbs the stock. Keep adding ladles of stock in this way until you have about 1-½ cups of stock remaining.
Add the chopped nettles, bacon and mushrooms to the rice mixture. Continue adding stock until the rice is cooked but still has some firmness. Grate in a decent amount of cheese (or if using a soft cheese, add them now) and then have a taste.
Salt and pepper to taste.
Makes 2 to 3 hearty main-course servings or 5-6 side dish servings.

A crew from Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railroad works to break up a logjam Tuesday afternoon beneath the railroad bridge that crosses the Skagit river between mount Vernon and burlington. Logjams at the bridge forces the river’s flow into narrower channels, increasing its velocity and potential for damage.
