Sonoma County Farm Trails began in 1973 as a cooperative effort by local farmers to market directly to customers via on-site sales. As a not-for-profit membership organization dedicated to preserving sustainable and diverse agriculture in Sonoma County, Farm Trails continues to promote farm-based sales and educational opportunities- creating lasting memories for thousands of families each year.

What began as a marketing initiative by local farmers 38 years ago each year becomes more relevant as new generations of families look to reconnect with the land, the plants and the animals which sustain us all. Visitors come to Sonoma County from all over the Bay Area, the US and abroad to enjoy a wonderful diversity of products and to experience the farm life.

Use this guide to create your own custom adventures and outings in Sonoma County any time of year. Experience everything from animal husbandry, bee keeping, apple picking, wine tasting and more as you travel Farm Trails from Petaluma in the south to Healdsburg in the north, Sonoma in the east and Sebastopol, Occidental and Bodega in the West. Each of our members is dedicated to providing wonderful interactive experiences, unique flavors and amazing educational and photographic opportunities.

Farm Trails offers special seasonal events where the farmers go all-out to provide exciting farm tours and experiences that often include live music, rides, tastings and special activities. You won’t want to miss Blossoms, Bees

and Barnyard Babies in the spring, the Gravenstein Apple Fair in August, and the official Weekend Along the Farm Trails in September. Look for details on these events in this guide or on our website.

We especially want to invite you to join us this year at Farm Trails’ annual Gravenstein Apple Fair, held at Ragle Ranch Park in Sebastopol, August 13th-14th. This marvelous country fair offers music and entertainment, food and drink, farm life displays, fun children’s activities, and of course, freshly harvested Gravenstein apples!

The Gravenstein Apple Fair is also the main fundraiser for Sonoma County Farm Trails. Your admission fee enables us to provide farm experiences for thousands of families each year and helps to ensure a thriving agriculture for future generations. Thank you for your support and for being a part of Farm Trails!

Tips for Visiting Farms• Select your route and the farms you want to visit. Only

farms with numbers on the map are open for public visits. Verify the hours of operation. If the farm description indicates that you need to make an appointment, please call in advance to make arrangements.

• Use a trusted map source or GPS to get detailed directions for your route. The maps in this guide are only reference points.

• Drive slowly on dirt roads.

• Check-in upon arrival. Many are working farms and family homes and not all areas are open to the public.

• Keep your children with you at all times.

• Dress appropriately for all weather and wear closed toed shoes made for all terrain. Don’t forget your hats and sunscreen.

• Bring cash for on-site purchases as some farms do not accept credit cards.

• Pack some snacks and drinks, and be sure to carry out anything you bring in. Ask the farmer for recommendations on local places to eat.

• Bring a cooler and bags or baskets to take home your bounty.

• Remember to wash your hands after petting animals.

• Leave your pets at home unless you have a service dog, and then let the farmer know ahead of time.

We look forward to seeing you along the Farm Trails!

Defining FibersWool sheared from sheep, goats, alpacas and rabbits are just some of the fibers grown organically and locally.

Sheep’s wool has two qualities that distinguish it from hair or fur: it has scales which overlap like shingles on a roof and are crimped; in some fleeces the wool fibers have more than 20 bends per inch. The finer the wool, the softer it will be, while coarser grades are more durable, and less prone to pilling.

Cashmere wool is characterized by its luxuriously soft fibers, with high nap ability and loft. It is sheared from the Cashmere goat. Fibers are highly adaptable and are easily constructed into fine or thick yarns, producing light to heavyweight fabrics.

Alpaca is warmer than sheep’s wool and lighter in weight. Most alpaca fiber is white, but it also comes in various shades of brown and black.

Angora fiber is produced from the down coat of the Angora rabbit. It is prized for its softness, and what knitters refer to as a halo (fluffiness). Angora fiber comes in white, black, and various shades of brown, and felts very easily.

SEA RANCH

Sonoma Valley Sonoma is renowned for its beautiful Spanish architecture and charismatic downtown square. The legacy of ranching in the Sonoma Valley stretches back centuries to when the town was first founded by Spanish settlers as Mission San Francisco Solano along El Camino Real. Before that, the Pomo lived on the fertile soil, calling the valley bounded by mountains the Valley of the Moon.

Today, the agricultural scene throughout the valley is diverse, with a variety of soil types supporting nearly every type of produce imaginable. Perennials thrive, with olive orchards, Christmas tree groves, citrus trees, strawberries, lavender fields, and of course wine grapes dotting the landscape. Livestock is also plentiful: a variety of dairy animals (sheep, cows, goats) provide delicious cheeses, and fiber farms full of sheep and alpacas produce luscious woolen yarns for knitting.

Benefits of Eating & Buying Locallyby Terry Allan, Nomadic Organics

Fresh and Nutritious } On average, it takes 4 days for commercial produce to get from the field to the grocery store shelf, and another few days before you actually eat it. Some volatile nutritional components of your food can be lost even under the best storage conditions. When you buy direct from the farm or farmers’ market you are usually getting produce picked only hours earlier. Fresh food tastes better and is better for you!

jiSeasonal Specialties } All fruits and vegetables have their own seasonal cycles, characteristics and flavors related to the climate in which they are grown. Wine enthusiasts call this terroir. Humans are part of these natural rhythms, but our modern food culture that supplies all things in all seasons by importing from around the globe causes us to forget this relationship. Eating locally and in-season keeps us in sync with the natural influences of our home place for better health, and allows us to enjoy, and truly appreciate, a cornucopia of fresh and different foods throughout the year.

jiDiverse Agriculture and Land Use } Buying local preserves open space and supports diverse cropping systems, which provide habitat for bees and beneficial insects.

jiReduced Transportation } Purchasing local products saves oil, prevents pollution, and helps ensure local food security. Shorter distances from field to plate also allow us to enjoy fragile, perishable foods that don’t lend themselves to industrial production and shipping regimes.

jiSupport the Local Economy } The effect of every dollar you spend at a local farm is multiplied many times over when that farmer hires labor or purchases supplies. A healthy local economy that keeps dollars circulating among and between local businesses of all kinds is better for our families and communities who benefit with more jobs and services.

jiBuilding Community } Connecting with your local farmer establishes a direct link between the food you eat, the land on which it is grown, and those who grow it. These essential relationships foster community and create friendships to span a lifetime.

“To own a bit of ground, to scratch it with a hoe, to plant seeds and watch their renewal of life - this is the commonest delight of the race, the most satisfactory thing a man can do.”~ Charles Dudley Warner

Petaluma to Penngrove Less than 45 minutes north of the Golden Gate Bridge lies Sonoma County’s southern-most region, a welcoming swath of rolling hills, rivers, and creeks for visitors traveling north on Highway 101. Petaluma’s authentic Victorian downtown, home of a national heirloom seed company housed in a historic bank building, offers a glimpse of life in another era.

Historically, Petaluma has served as the commercial hub for agriculture trade in Sonoma County, with barges plying the Petaluma River down to San Francisco carrying produce, wine, livestock, eggs, and other goods. Today, it is the gateway to food-centric Sonoma County, with one of the highest concentrations of sustainable family farms, artisan cheese makers, and dairy and livestock producers of any Sonoma County region.

On the outskirts of Petaluma, Penngrove offers an ag-friendly, welcoming small-town feel to visitors and passersby. Throughout the region, wineries and large scale olive oil orchards share fence lines with small family farms growing everything from artichokes to zucchini, as well as cashmere goats, dairy goats, llamas, pigs, Babydoll Southdown sheep, honey, flowers, nursery plants, sausage, pumpkins, and even goat milk ice cream.

It’s a hard fact that hens raised on pasture lay far more nutritious eggs than confined hens in factory farms. Farmers who let their animals graze on fresh pasture lay eggs richer in taste, vitamins and nutrients. Free range farm-fresh eggs contain:All nine essential amino acidsAll known vitamins and minerals, except vitamin C 1/3 less cholesterol 1/4 less saturated fat

2/3 more vitamin A4 to 6 times more vitamin D 3 times more vitamin E2 times more Omega-3 fatty acid 7 times more beta-carotene

The egg is the most complete protein source in a single food. These high quality proteins are necessary for the integrity of cell membranes. Regarded as “brain food,” eggs contain long chain unsaturated fatty-acids which play a vital role in the development of the nervous system in infants and the maintenance of mental acuity in adults.

Santa Rosa to Cotati Located at the heart of Sonoma County, Santa Rosa is a bustling city brimming with restaurants and shops. Yet many visitors don’t realize that there are still farms just a few miles away from downtown. With its mild micro-climate, tempered from extremes of hot and cold, Santa Rosa is truly a garden spot. Perhaps that’s what attracted renowned plant breeder Luther Burbank to the area in the late 1800’s, where he developed hundreds of important plant varieties including the Santa Rosa Plum and the Burbank Russet potato—both still widely grown by professional farmers and gardeners alike.

Visit the area’s farms and gardens, contemporaries of Burbank, where third and fourth generation families carry on their ancestors’ proud legacies. You’ll also find world class wineries and olive oil, a year-round farmers’ market, pumpkins, ornamental specialties for your home landscape, and drippingly sweet honey and bee-keeping supplies.

Sebastopol is a small town with all the comforts of a big city, including a ten-screen movie theater, an eclectic array of dining opportunities, and shops that sell everything from funky tie-dyed apparel to world-class antiques. It’s also a town with a particularly vibrant performing arts community; hundreds of talented artists call Sebastopol home. Situated between the coast and Santa Rosa, Sebastopol has one of Sonoma County’s cooler micro-climates, which in the world of agriculture means delectable greens and fabulous fruit. Expect succulent honeys, mouth-watering heirloom apples, lovely lettuces, and even kiwis. Many Sebastopol farmers dry-farm their tomatoes to help them ripen, which results in zesty, concentrated flavor--just perfect for a town where quality, not quantity, is what counts.

Olive Oil has withstood the test of time; it is the safest

vegetable oil you could use. The high percentage of oelic acid

makes olive oil ideal for salads and for cooking at moderate

temperatures. Extra virgin olive oil is also rich in antioxidants. Studies have repeatedly shown that olive

oil provides numerous health benefits, including protection

from heart disease. ~Sally Fallon, Nourishing Traditions

“The sweetest little fair in Sonoma County”By Wendy Hilberman, Apple Fair Manager

The Gravenstein Apple Fair is hosted by Sonoma County Farm Trails and has a long and rich history in Sonoma County. Sebastopol staged its first Apple Show in 1910 on Main Street in a tent across from the Petaluma and Santa Rosa Railway Depot. This small event celebrating the tart but sweet apple called the Gravenstein became an annual bash occurring every August, focusing on showcasing apples and apple products during the peak of their season. The fair annually sported huge custom structures for front entrance gates and elaborate apple displays by local packing plants, canneries and apple drying companies. Processing and marketing apples had become big business. Sculptors were hired to build ¼ scale buildings and

even a locomotive out of whole fresh and dried sliced apples. Those early fairs had a carnival like atmosphere and were attended by people from all over the United States.Today, the Gravenstein Apple Fair continues the tradition of celebrating and exhibiting apples, combined with fantastic live music on two stages, great food, cooking demonstrations from local chefs, arts and crafts booths, a petting zoo, and so much more. Visitors experience the feeling of an old time country get-together: you can throw darts at apples, ride in a wagon pulled by plow horses, and shop the local artisan booths for handmade jewelry, clothing, pottery and gourmet goodies. There are fun activities, like the Hay Maze for the kids, Life on the Farm performances, bee keeper displays, and a fine selection of local wine and brews for the adults.

What kind of a fair would it be without contests? Local home cooks can enter a pie in the Apple Pie Baking contest sponsored by the Sebastopol Chamber of Commerce, or adults and children can enter the Pie Eating Contest, the no-hands Caramel Apple Eating Contest, the Applesauce Drinking Contest and the Apple Juggling Contest. There is no doubt that the Gravenstein Apple Fair is one of the most kid-friendly fairs of the year, but it’s fun for adults as well. With a selection of food, a wine tent featuring award winning wine from all over Sonoma County and two beer tents, there truly is something for everyone. The 2011 Gravenstein Apple Fair promises to be an incredible year of music, food, crafts and activities. The Fair has a great line-up of live music, featuring headliners: Tom Rigney & Flambeau, Mitch Woods & His Rocket 88’s and Solid Air. The fair also offers two additional stages with cooking demonstrations and a “Life on the Farm” stage that features live farm shows with activities like milking a goat or shearing a sheep.

Don’t miss the Fair, August 13th & 14th at Ragle Ranch Park, 10-6 on Saturday and 10-5 on Sunday. This year tickets are available online at www.gravensteinapplefair.com. Tickets go on sale June 1st and we will be offering pre-ticket sale promotions. See you at the fair!

West County Winding roads, oaks and evergreens, hidden valleys, and rich soils characterize this fog-kissed region. Since first being settled in the mid-nineteenth century, the Graton and Occidental area has had a colorful cultural and rich agricultural history. Groves of heirloom Gravenstein apples grow peacefully alongside cool climate winegrapes. Asian pears are also a mainstay of this region, and bees busily pollinate the region’s orchards, yielding rich, sweet honey. Graton and Occidental are the perfect towns to visit on a hot summer day, and their winding roads offer hidden treats such as a turn-of-the-century steam powered mill, on-farm you-pick opportunities, and of course farm animals to feed and cuddle.

“The fight to save family farms isn’t just about the farmers. It’s about making sure that there is a safe and healthy food supply for all of us. It’s about jobs, from Main Street to Wall Street. It’s about a better America.” ~ Willie Nelson

River Route The Russian River twists and turns as it winds its way from Alexander Valley all the way to the town of Jenner on the coast of the Pacific Ocean. The Farm Trails River Route covers the Russian River’s western track, taking visitors past the towns of Forestville, Guerneville, Monte Rio, and Duncans Mills—places where the soil is rich and silty from floodwaters.

The River Route includes Sonoma County’s so-called banana belt, where the coastal influence keeps the land frost-free and temperate for much of the year. Orchards and vineyards flourish alongside towering redwood trees, and world-class restaurants can be found tucked away in tiny towns.

Coast Route The geographic boundary between Marin and Sonoma Counties blurs in the winding country roads leading from the tiny town of Tomales in Marin County, through the Two Rock Valley area of Petaluma, and up through the true country villages of Bloomfield, Valley Ford, and Bodega. This is dairy country, sheep country, horse country, biking country.

Following Highway 1 up from Pt. Reyes National Seashore, you can turn inland towards Petaluma at Tomales Road, just before the town of Tomales and the turnoff to Dillon Beach. This 6-mile stretch passes 1,000-acre dairy ranches, Scottish Highland cattle ranches, restored schoolhouses, and small family ranches. Turning left from the end of Tomales Road, you head up Valley Ford Road past more dairy, sheep and horse operations, an heirloom apple orchard, sweet vacation rentals, small hotels, and great country restaurants in both Tomales and Valley Ford. And don’t miss the area’s only native plant nursery, either.

Windsor to Healdsburg The Russian River Valley is famous for warm summer days and cool, foggy nights. As you drive past rows of neatly-tended grapevines, don’t forget that wine grapes aren’t the only crop grown here. In Healdsburg, where locals have a penchant for traditional food, free-range eggs from heritage hens abound. Pastured pork —including unusual heritage breeds—and lamb are also common.

On the green side of things, expect to enjoy a wide variety of heirloom vegetables. The local Slow Food convivium provides local farmers with Slow Food Ark of Taste seeds, so you’ll find local farmers growing Crane melons, Sibley squash, Sheepnose peppers, and Burbank tomatoes—not to mention Romanesco zucchini, Moon and Stars watermelon and everything in between. In nearby Windsor, slightly hotter days result in excellent sweet corn and fiery peppers. Berries, fruit trees, and olives grow well in the Russian River Valley too, so be on the lookout for strawberries, apples, pomegranates, persimmons, and fresh olive oil, depending upon the time of year.

The Dry Creek Valley is famous for its heirloom peaches in the summer, and Dry Creek Peach jam can keep your sweet tooth satiated in the off season. Healdsburg and Windsor offer a perfect Sonoma County combination: some of the best wines in California paired with fabulous, farm-fresh food.

Tips for Shopping a Farmers’ Market1. Get to know the farmers and producers. Ask about their growing methods —many farmers who practice organic agriculture are not certified.

2. Take your children along so they can learn where their food comes from and participate in making decisions about what to eat.

3. Taste {try or sample} something new and ask how to prepare it.

4. Bring cloth bags for your purchases, and leave a cooler in the car for perishables.

5. Bring cash, preferably in small bills. It’s also helpful to have change. Remember that the money you spend at a Farmers’ Market supports a sustainable food system and contributes to a thriving agricultural community.
