A Welcoming, Vibrant, andExciting Summer CommunityThe following questions and answers will give you aclearer understanding of day-to-day life on campus andhelp you embrace the academic and cultural experi-ences, adventure, and fun you’re sure to encounter as aSummer Session student.

What is expected of me?• All students are expected to behave safely, honestly,responsibly, and respectfully in Phillips Academy’smulticultural community.

Who will look after me during my stay atPhillips Academy?• Experienced, enthusiastic, and caring housecounselors get to know each student personallyand help students adapt to dorm living.

• House counselors, who often serve as teachersduring Summer Session, will help with anyquestions or concerns.

• The main point of contact for students andparents, house counselors write a report at the endof the five weeks about each student’s SummerSession experiences.

What is life like in the dormitory?• Housing on campus is varied. Anywhere fromfive to 39 students live in a Phillips Academydormitory; the average ratio of house counselorto student is one to nine.

• Not only a place to sleep and study, a dorm servesas a comfortable social environment in whichmany students develop lasting friendships.

• Living in a dorm also provides an excellent oppor-tunity for developing self-discipline, time-manage-ment skills, respect, and tolerance for others.

• Rooms are assigned on a first-come, first-servedbasis. However, students may note their preferencefor a double room or a single room on the applica-tion form; typically there are more requests fordoubles than for singles.

• Living closely with other young people fromwidely differing backgrounds is one of the most

rewarding experiences of Summer Session; requestsfor friends as roommates are not honored.

What should I bring?• Each student is encouraged to bring a fan forhis/her desk (these also can be purchased locally).

• Linens—including pillow, extra set of long sheets,pillowcase, blanket, washcloth, and set of towels—are provided.

• Although Phillips Academy has several computercenters with Apple and PC computers, studentsare encouraged to bring their own computersto campus.

• Students may not bring TVs, air conditioners,refrigerators, and other appliances.

• Personal spending habits vary. However,approximately $700 is recommended for trips andpersonal spending money. Traveler’s checks andATM cards are recommended.

Will I have access to a telephoneand e-mail?• Each student room has a phone, which has freelocal service.

• Long-distance calls may be placed by using acalling card or via the student’s cell phone.

• Voice mailboxes are provided for all students.• Each student has a personal e-mail account andaccess to the Web.

• Internet access through the campus network isavailable in all dorms.

What should I wear?• Students dress informally but with a sense of pro-priety; there is no dress code at Phillips Academy.

• Students should have clothing suitable for trips tocolleges, theatres, etc.

• Students should have swimming and athletic gear.• Coin-operated washing machines and dryers areavailable in most dormitories; an optional laundryservice may be purchased.

Why do I take only two courses?• Each Summer Session course is an in-depth studyof a subject that requires substantial commitmentand effort inside and outside of class.

• Taking more than two courses would not allowtime for the other activities and opportunitiesoffered by Summer Session.

• Choosing two courses with a heavy concentrationin the same discipline is not advised.

Is extra help available?• Math, Writing, and ESL Study Centers operatedaily to complement in-class instruction and toprovide individual attention.

• These centers offer the opportunity for tutoringby skilled faculty members.

May I leave campus during the day?• Students may go to the town of Andover in theafternoons and early evenings.

• Upper School students may leave campus onWednesday and Saturday afternoons, and all dayon Sunday (Day Excuses) with house counselorpermission and written parental consent on file.

• Lower School Institute (LSI) students are notallowed to take Day Excuses.

May I stay away from campus overnight?• Students may leave campus after classes onSaturday with written permission from parentsand approval of Summer Session deans.

• An invitation from and the presence of an adultare required for the student to go home or to stayat a friend’s home.

• No off-campus visit, with or without parents, mayinterfere with the student’s responsibility to attendevery class Monday through Saturday and studyhours Sunday through Friday.

• Unauthorized absence from campus will resultin dismissal.

What if I am a day student?• Day students are an integral part of SummerSession. Along with attending classes, they areencouraged to take part in all activities, eat inthe main dining hall, relax and socialize with thecommunity, and make full use of SummerSession facilities.

• Course-wise, day students have several options.They may design a schedule that includes a major,a minor, an activity, and college counseling (thesame schedule as a boarding student) OR theymay construct a schedule with one course or acombination of Upper School offerings.

Where will I have meals?• Meals are served in Paresky Commons, acentral dining hall with a variety of entrées, apasta bar, and a salad bar, among other choicesavailable daily.

• The Den, located on the lower level of PareskyCommons, is a student center that offers a menuof sandwiches, snacks, pizza, and smoothies atreasonable prices.

Will I have free time?• Along with time for required classes and appoint-ments, days are structured to allow ample timefor individual study and relaxation in study areas,dormitory common rooms, and athletic facilities.

What if I get sick?• Phillips Academy has registered nurses on duty24 hours a day at the Isham Health Center.

• In addition, a physician and a psychologicalcounselor hold office hours and remain on callat all times.

May I take music lessons?• Private music lessons and chamber musicinstruction are available.

• A complete listing of what is offered, including feeschedules, is included in your acceptance packet.

Where can I attend religious services?• Summer Session provides students, on request,with schedules for local religious services andassists students in obtaining information forservices outside of the town of Andover.

How will I manage my money?• Students are encouraged to have a checkingaccount at a bank, either in their hometown or inthe town of Andover.

• There is a Bank of America ATM on campus,located by the student mailboxes in the lower levelof George Washington Hall.

• Banks and ATMs located in downtown Andover, ashort walk from campus, include Bank of America,Butler Bank, Citibank, Citizens Bank, SovereignBank, TD Bank, and The Savings Bank.

• Some students also find traveler’s checks to bea useful option.

What about afternoon activities?• You will be able to participate in a special activityof your choice on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, andFriday afternoons.

• Afternoon activities can include basketball, soccer,tennis, swimming, yoga, physical fitness, running,ultimate Frisbee, and more.

Student LifeCultural and Social Opportunities

• On Saturday nights, students can enjoy movies,dances, off-campus trips, and visiting entertainerswho come to campus.

• Students are invited to audition for a student talentshow, one of the best and most highly anticipatedperformances of the summer.

• The W.E.B. DuBois Colloquium brings studentsand faculty together to explore a range of contem-porary topics with scholars, artists, and activists.

Trips & Tours• Each Wednesday, trips and tours to New Englandcolleges are scheduled; preference is given to 11th-and 12th-graders.

• Each weekend, several trips are planned for recre-ation. Based on excursions in previous years, tripsin 2011 may include:
