a door is a starting point,

dear friends:

Two things cannot be overstated about The Exchange Club

Family Center. First, our community’s need is boundless.

Second, the success of the Center in improving Memphis

communities, restoring families, and preventing child abuse

and neglect over the past 29 years is beyond measure.

For three decades, The Exchange Club Family Center has had

an immediate positive effect on our city as a whole, by healing

the effects of abuse and breaking cycles of family violence.

In addition, our programs spark long-lasting change that will

continue to compound as they serve more and more families.

Breaking the pattern of family violence is no easy task, and it

takes a special group of people to dedicate their lives to ending

child abuse and neglect in our city. It has been an honor for me

to collaborate with such gifted and driven people during the

past two years as Board President.

President, Board of Directors, The Exchange Club Family Center

Partner, inferno

a new beginning. It’s a step toward a brighter future. Through

its work, The Exchange Club Family Center opens new doors

for individuals and their families, giving them an opportunity

to move forward without looking back.

Unfortunately, funding for organizations like ours continues to

decrease. Each year, as public funding evaporates, support from

friends, foundations, and corporations becomes more important

to the operation of the Center. I extend my deep-felt gratitude

to every supporter, donor, staff member, and volunteer involved

with the Center. I hope you will continue to donate your time

and hard work to such an important organization that works on

behalf of all of us in Memphis. Your support provides priceless

healing in children and families throughout our community.

An original founding member of the East Memphis Exchange Club, Lewis Pittman has been involved with The

Exchange Club Family Center since it opened

its doors in 1984. At the time, it had an annual

budget of $100,000, no income, and three

employees. Over the years, with the generous

support of donors, employees, volunteers,

and fellow Exchange Club members, the

Center has grown to serve thousands of

family members each year.

Lewis has grown along with the Center. He

has served seven Executive Directors and seen the Center change

locations three times, including the purchase (and expansion) of

our current building. He also watched as the Center earned state

and national recognition for its child abuse prevention and domestic

violence programs.

But his proudest moments have been the opportunities he has had

to tell “the Memphis story” all over the country. Spreading the word

about the growth of the Center in Memphis inspires others to get

involved in their own communities.

In addition to serving three times as Board President for the Center,

Lewis served five years as the Child Abuse Prevention Chair for the

Tennessee District Exchange Clubs. The Tennessee district includes

seven different child abuse prevention centers. As Chair, he attended

nine national symposiums, where he talked about the incredible

growth we’ve had here in Memphis.

lewis pittman Board Member, Board of Directors, The Exchange Club Family Center

Founding Board Member, East Memphis Exchange Club

“The Center has raised awareness

not only of the problems facing our

community, but also of a host of

successful solutions.”

UNLOCKING POSSIBILITIES

Patrick Burke is just one of many people who give back to the community through The Exchange

Club Family Center. For the last three

years, he has served as a Board member

and currently serves as Treasurer. He has

also worked on the Hands of Hope Auction

Party, the largest fundraiser for the Center.

Unofficially, he has become somewhat

of a recruiter for the Board of Directors,

convincing a few new Board members to

join the cause.

Getting to know the staff and the other

Board members has been one of the most gratifying experiences for

Patrick. He says everyone supports the mission of the Center, and

he can tell the employees love what they do. But the success stories

from individual families, especially those from children, are what push

Patrick to keep giving.

Patrick explains that there are many ways to get involved with

the Center, whether you want to work behind the scenes or jump

in and volunteer at special events and fundraisers. He says the

Center can always use extra help, and you’d be hard-pressed to

find a better cause.

patrick burke Treasurer, Board of Directors, The Exchange Club Family Center

Senior Vice President, CBRE Memphis

“I was really unaware of the Center

and what it did for the community.

The work done there really helps

families of all backgrounds – not just

the underprivileged.”

GIVING HOPE

Erma Simpson first came to The Exchange Club Family Center as an AmeriCorps volunteer member, assisting in the parenting portion of our

Comprehensive Anger Management

Program (CAMP). Inspired by the mission

of the Center, Erma accepted a permanent

position as Program Director of our First

STEPS (Skills to Ensure Parenting Success)

program and obtained her master’s degree

in Social Work.

First STEPS is a comprehensive teen

parenting and life skills program for at-risk,

first-time teen mothers. The program, in conjunction with an in-home

parent aide support system, helps teen mothers learn to provide for

themselves and their infants. According to Erma, the consistency of

the program, as compared to similar programs in the area, has made

it a kind of “life support” for many teen mothers and their babies.

The best part of Erma’s day is the time she spends with her staff.

The Commercial Appeal recently named The Exchange Club Family

Center winner of the 2013 Top Workplaces in Memphis’ small employer

category. Erma says it’s easy to see why. Her staff is passionate about

the mission of the Center, and they love coming to work every day.

And when young mothers come by to chat and share their successes,

Erma’s day only gets better.

erma simpson, MA First STEPS Program Director, The Exchange Club Family Center

“When we witness change in one of our teen mothers, we know that we have impacted a generation.”

WORKING TOGETHER

“I am so grateful that the Center was around when I needed them. I hope they are able to have the same impact on other kids’ lives as they did on mine.”

nathaniel Client, The Exchange Club Family Center

Nathaniel is a teenager who was abused by a family member, starting at a very young age. Nathaniel and

his mother live on her fixed disability income

and could not afford counseling services.

Because The Exchange Club Family Center

provides services based on an economic

sliding scale, Nathaniel was able to start

play therapy when he was three years old.

Since that time, the Center staff has become

like family.

“They saved my life,” he says. “I was depressed

and didn’t have much hope. They helped me get around that and

showed me there were more things to live for. I also learned to stay

focused in a healthy way and not take my anger out on others.”

Nathaniel credits Mary Jane Thompson, who has been with the Center

almost 20 years, with having a huge impact on his life. A licensed

professional counselor with more than 350 hours of play therapy

training, she is also President of the Memphis Area Association of

Play Therapists. Mary Jane has been involved in Nathaniel’s life since

his first play therapy session. Nathaniel believes Mary Jane turned his

life around by boosting his morale through tough times, especially

holidays and birthdays.

Nathaniel’s life took another positive turn when he signed up for his

school’s band and fell in love with the cello. This year, he tried out for

the Memphis Youth Symphony’s String Sinfonia and made it. Recently,

he was also named to the All-West Band and Orchestra, and his

Center family rallied to help him with the expenses.

SINCE 1948

The Exchange Club Family Center is honored to have been selected as the official charity of the Germantown Charity Horse Show. This wonderful family event just celebrated its 65th year, and for the past 14 years, The Exchange Club Family Center has been selected as the recipient charity of this event. The Center’s supporters, staff, and clients have a tremendous amount of gratitude for this partnership. Proceeds from different activities along with a generous donation from the Germantown Charity Horse Show organization help provide counseling and other services for children who have been abused or forced to witness family violence. Since 1999, the event has raised well over $400,000 for the Center’s programs.
