Friday - Stephen Mitchell (USA)Professor Stephen Mitchell, Kent State University, Ohio (USA)Steve Mitchell is a Professor of Sport Pedagogy at Kent State University in Ohio (USA). Steve has authored numerous articles and book chapters related to standards-based and teaching sport for understanding using a tactical teaching approach in Physical Education. He has also co-authored two textbooks related to Teaching Games for Understanding (TGfU) within physical education, including one that is now into its third edition (Teaching sport concepts and skills: A tactical games approach). Recent undertakings include curriculum and assessment projects with several school districts in NE Ohio, and membership on the state PE standards curriculum writing and assessment development teams. Steve is currently president of the Ohio AHPERD (Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance) and is a nominee this year for the NASPE (National Association for Sport and Physical Education) presidency. He is an international expert in game performance assessment and the pedagogy of teaching sport for understanding in physical education.

Thursday - Tim Olds (Australia)Professor Tim Olds, University of South Australia

Tim Olds is continually investigating the fields of fitness, fatness, physical activity and food intake in children and adolescents in Australia and around the world. His recent research interests have been in secular trends in the sleep, fitness, fatness, physical activity and food intake. Tim’s current work looks at how people use their time, especially when undertaking behavioural change programs.

Much of Tim’s recent work has focussed on sleep patterns in children and adolescents. He has explored links between sleep and obesity, charted the history of sleep and sleep recommendations over the last century.

A world known and regarded presenter, we are delighted to have Tim as our keynote speaker for this Conference.

Guest SpeakerThursday - Tim NielsenHead Coach - Emerging Redbacks Cricket Program, SACATim Nielsen is a former South Australian state cricketer and the former head coach of the Australian cricket team (2007-2011). He was a talented wicketkeeper-batsman for South Australia who quickly made his mark in the coaching arena. He played the last of his 101 games as wicketkeeper-batsman for South Australia in 1999 before he moved into coaching, first with the Redbacks and then as an assistant with the national team, before becoming the head coach of the Centre of Excellence in Brisbane in 2005. Tim will share some of his background experiences, and outline his thoughts on the importance of teamwork, goal setting and effective communication to ensure team success.

Early Career HPE teachers Program- ‘Moving from Surviving to Thriving’ April 19th, 2012 Building on from the success of the ACHPER (SA) Early Career Teacher in Health and Physical Education Mentoring Program that started in 2005, ACHPER (SA) are pleased to present an Early Career Health & PE teacher seminar for 2012, as a part of this ACHPER Conference on April 19th (3.05 - 5.00pm). This has been planned to support teachers in the initial years of teaching.

The seminar will offer practical support, tips and strategies for teachers, and provide a mentor to support early career teachers with ongoing support.

You will come away from the workshop with ideas for equipment modification, a small-sided game modified for maximum participation and skill learning, and with an appreciation of the role of ‘critical reflection’ to develop ‘thinking players’. This presentation will report on a number of studies that have been undertaken with boys from early childhood through to adolescence to assist in understanding the meaning of sport and physical activity in the lives of young males including the implications associated with their perception of and engagement with sport and physical activity later in life.

This session will provide a short overview of the development of the draft Shape Paper for Health and Physical Education. The majority of the session will provide participants with the opportunity to directly provide feedback to the ACARA Health and Physical Education writing team on the draft Shape Paper. Moving from Surviving to Thriving Seminar, ACHPER (SA) are pleased to again present a seminar for Health and Physical Educa-tion teachers in their first years of teaching H&PE. The seminar will link to a formal and informal program where early career teach-ers in Health & Physical Education can receive ongoing advice from experienced Health and Physical Education teachers. The seminar will allow you to reflect on your practice, and establish a mentor to support you throughout 2012. Support on major issues including classroom and behaviour management, report writing, conducting parent interviews and programming and sequencing learning, will occur.
