Lee’s Summit 360°-Charting Tomorrow is the third strategic plan undertaken by a collaborative group of citizens and is divided into six Key Performance Areas (KPAs). These KPAs, identified as community-wide priorities, were Education, Economic Development, Health and Human Services (HHS), Local Government, Quality of Life and Transportation. Each KPA has a set of goals and strategic action steps which will plan resources in the city and to service the community now and in the future.

The Health and Human Services KPA’s first goal established the Human Services Advisory Board (HSAB). The HSAB consists of leaders in the nonprofit community and community volunteers. HSAB works together in order to ensure that Lee’s Summit is rated one of America’s healthiest cities by using an integrated health and human services network that provides easy access to all citizens whether or not they are insured.

The second goal of the HHS KPA was to develop a plan to provide for the health care needs of uninsured citizens of Lee's Summit. MetroCARE was asked by the physician co-chairs of Lee’s Summit Health Education Advisory Board to expand into Eastern Jackson County to meet this goal.

According to the data from the Mid America Regional Council there are as many as 7,000 uninsured up to 400 percent of the federal poverty level in Lee’s Summit. In 2009 US Census bureau survey, it was cited that 10.6 percent of the area population was without insurance.

Through grants, MetroCARE in Lee’s Summit was established. The mission of the organization is to improve access to medical care for low-income, uninsured patients through volunteerism among health care providers. MetroCARE is a volunteer physician referral network that links low-income, uninsured patients with physicians who have pledged to diagnose and treat them at no charge.

Strategies to Good Mental HealthPeople who are emotionally healthy

are in control of their emotions and their behavior. They handle life’s challenges, build strong relationships, and lead fulfilling lives. When bad things happen, they’re able to bounce back and move on. Unfortunately, too many people focus on mental health only when they develop problems. Just as it requires effort to build or maintain physical health, so it is with mental and emotional health. The more time and energy you invest, the stronger it will be. The good news is that there are many things you can do to boost your mood and get more enjoyment out of life.

Mental or emotional health refers to your overall psychological well-being. It includes the way you feel about yourself, the quality of relationships and your ability to manage feelings and handle difficulties. Being mentally or emotionally healthy is much more than being free of depression, anxiety or other psychological issues. Mental and emotional health refers to presence of positive characteristics. Some people may not have negative feelings, but they still need to do things

to feel positive and achieve mental and emotional health.

People who are mentally and emotionally healthy have: a sense of contentment with life; the ability to laugh and have fun; the ability to deal with stress and adversity; a sense of meaning and purpose; the flexibility to learn new things and adapt to change; a balance between work and play, etc.; the ability to build and maintain fulfilling relationships; self-confidence and high self-esteem. These positive characteristics of mental and emotional health allow you to participate in life to the fullest extent possible through productive, meaningful activities and strong relationships. These positive characteristics also help you cope when faced with life's challenges and stresses.

Being emotionally and mentally healthy doesn’t mean never going through bad times or experiencing emotional problems. We all go through disappointments, loss and change. And while these are normal parts of life, they can still cause sadness, anxiety and stress. The difference is with

good emotional health, people have an ability to bounce back from adversity, trauma and stress. They remain focused, flexible and creative in bad times as well as good.

Some strategies to being emotionally and mentally healthy are to appeal to your senses: sight, sound, touch, smell and taste. Listen to music that lifts your mood, place flowers where you will see and smell them, massage your hands and feet or sip a warm drink. Engage in meaningful, creative work. Do things that challenge your creativity and make you feel productive. Pets can provide love, get you out of the house for exercise and expose you to new people and places. Make leisure time a priority with things you enjoy. Play is an emotional and mental health necessity.

Mediate, pray, enjoy the sunset or simply take a moment to pay attention to what is good, positive and beautiful as you go about your day. Some people feel better relaxing and slowing down while others need more activity and more excitement or stimulation to feel better. The important thing is to find activities that you enjoy and that give you a boost.

Make spending face-to-face time with people you enjoy a priority. Choose people who are upbeat and interested in you. Communication is a largely nonverbal experience that requires you to be in direct contact with other people, so don’t neglect your real-world relationships in favor of virtual interaction. Doing something that helps others has a beneficial effect on how you feel about yourself. The meaning and

purpose you find in helping others will enrich and expand your life.

With today’s busy lifestyles, we often try to follow a healthy lifestyle but become overwhelmed making sense of it all. Start with some simple changes that will make a significant impact.

1. Water – Aim for at least one liter of warm or room-temperature water upon waking and before breakfast. Most of your water intake should come between meals. If you drink with a meal, be sure to sip.

2. Sleep at least seven to eight hours a night - With chronic or repeated stress or lack of sleep, the body continues to produce the hormone cortisol. If your adrenal glands are continuously called upon to produce cortisol, they eventually weaken, causing the body to store rather than burn fat. Fatigue, depression and other symptoms may result as well.

3. Food: emphasize quality over quantity – Choose whole foods like fruits, vegetables, beans, peas, lentils, nuts, seeds, whole grains, fresh meat and dairy. Ultimately your goal should be to purchase “one-ingredient” foods. Strive to eat 75 percent fresh foods and the other 25 percent foods of your choice.

4. Fist-Size Meals - Eat small meals, the size of your fist, throughout the day to keep your metabolism running efficiently.

Eating too much at one meal will hinder your metabolism.

5. Chew Your Food – Chew your food thoroughly in a relaxed state before swallowing, allowing your body to reap the health benefits of all nutrients. Food should be at a liquid state before swallowing.

6. Balance Your Plate – Fill half your plate full of bright colored vegetables, one-fourth with protein and one-fourth with starch. Fruit is great for snacking and morning meals. Always use a salad plate or small plate to keep portions in check.

7. Exercise – The possibilities for being active are endless. Remember, for adults, getting physically active at least five times a week, for 30 minutes or more, will help lead you toward a happier and healthier lifestyle. For kids, being active an hour a day is a small step towards good health! Do you want to be a healthy role model for your children? Here are some Get Active Tips for families:

High Cholesterol - Replace meat with beans, peas and lentils since they contain soluble fiber proven to lower cholesterol. Oatmeal, chia seeds, flax seeds and barley are also great cholesterol-reducing foods. Be sure to limit saturated fats and omit fried foods as well as foods containing trans fats (partially hydrogenated oils). Include whole foods like fruit, vegetables and whole grains at every meal.

High Blood Pressure – Consume no more than 2000 mg sodium per day. Omit the salt shaker and limit eating out and pre-packaged foods. Reduce your portion sizes, choose more whole foods, exercise and include stress-reducing activities like yoga or deep breathing.

Corporate wellness programs are one of the most important benefits a company can provide its employees. These programs provide not only a healthy advantage for individuals participating, but research shows corporate wellness programs also provide significant returns on investments, improved employee productivity and performance, along with a reduction in absenteeism rates and health care costs for those companies offering worksite wellness.

Lee’s Summit Parks and Recreation is dedicated to supporting and encouraging a healthy community, and from that direction introduced its own corporate and community wellness program, RevUP. RevUP is available to corporations and organizations around the Lee’s Summit area as a corporate wellness program, and to residents in Lee’s Summit and surrounding communities as a community wellness program.

RevUP is a 12 week wellness program that is designed to produce remarkable results! Included in the program are comprehensive fitness assessments that include muscular strength and endurance testing, cardiovascular endurance testing, flexibility and body composition assessments, along with a full lipid profile and glucose analysis. In addition to these assessments, participants benefit from unique and integrative personal training and fitness programs designed specifically to meet their individual needs and goals. Nutrition is an important component in a healthy lifestyle, so weekly nutrition and lifestyle classes following the Healthy Eating Everyday program are offered as well. These classes focus on weight loss and weight management as a lifestyle and behavior change, and will thoroughly educate the participants on the benefits of a healthy and well balanced life.

Finally, wellness and incentive challenges are offered throughout the duration of the program and consist of anything from walking programs and water challenges, to smoking cessation.

RevUP is located at Legacy Park Community Center and participants receive a free membership for the length of their program. Any business or corporation that currently occupies an on-site fitness facility is able to alter the RevUP program in order to utilize their amenities.

Dr. Bartalos was born and raised in Kansas City. He received his undergraduate degree from DePauw University and went on to Kansas City University of Medicine and Biosciences for his medical degree. He completed a residency in Internal Medicine at The University of Missouri and finished his fellowship in Gastroenterology. He is board certified in Internal Medicine and board eligible for Gastroenterology. His area of special interest is inflammatory bowel disease. Dr. Lozoff was born and raised in Milwaukee, Wis., and attended the University of Wisconsin where he obtained a Bachelor of Science in Psychology. He then went to the University of Bologna in Italy before transferring to the Rush University Medical College in Chicago, in Internal Medicine, where he became the Chief Medical Resident. This was followed with a Fellowship in Gastroenterology at Hines VA Hospital in Chicago, after which he became Board Certified. Dr. Lozoff is Board Certified Gastroentererologist and Internal Medicine. He has been in private practice since 1983.

Dr. Lucido was raised in Chicago. She completed the BA/MD program at the University of Missouri - Kansas City obtaining both her undergraduate and medical degrees in six years. She moved to Minneapolis, Minn., to complete her residency in Internal Medicine at the University of Minnesota. She was the Chief Medical Resident at the Minneapolis VA Medical Center, then completed a Fellowship in Gastroenterology at the University of Minnesota. During her fellowship, she spent a year performing research and training in Endoscopic Ultrasound. Dr. Lucido is Board Certified in Gastroenterology and Internal Medicine. She enjoys traveling and spending time with her family.

Dr. Totta was born and raised in the Kansas City area and graduated from Bishop O'Hara High School in 1987. After obtaining a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Biology at the University of Central Missouri, he entered Medical School at the Kansas City University of Medicine and Bioscience. He trained at the University of Kansas Medical Center in Internal Medicine, where he also served as Chief Medical Resident. This was followed by a Fellowship in Gastroenterology at the Good Samaritan Regional Medical Center - University of Phoenix Medical Center combined Fellowship program. Dr. Totta is Board Certified in Gastroenterology and Internal Medicine. He has been in practice in Kansas City since 2002, he is married and enjoys spending time with his three children.

Dr. Schlachter is a native of New York and a graduate of Brooklyn College. He earned his medical degree from the Kansas City University of Medicine and Biosciences. He completed a residency in Internal Medicine in Columbus, Ohio, as well as a Fellowship in Gastroenterology at Barnes Hospital, Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis. He is board certified in Gastroenterology and Internal Medicine. Dr. Schlachter is an Associate Professor of Medicine at the Kansas City University of Medicine and Biosciences. He has been in private practice since 1989. Dr. Schlachter's hobbies include fishing, collecting antique watches, as well as classic automobiles.

Amy Waller received her undergraduate from the University of Missouri-Columbia with honors and her masters degree from the University of Missouri-Kansas City with honors. Amy has over 15 years of GI experience and is certified as a Clinical Specialist by the American Nurse Credentialing Center. She emphasizes wellness and self-care by giving patients the information they need to make healthy lifestyle choices and health care decisions. Amy is married with two children. She enjoys exercising, yoga and spending time with family.

Dr. Dowd lived in Northern California for 22 years. He was raised in the small town of Sonoma (famous for its wines). After receiving his bachelor of science degree from the University of California. Dr. Dowd earned his medical degree from the University of Cincinnati in 1992. He then went on to Dallas for his residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology at the University of Texas, Southwestern at Parkland Memorial Hospital. He joined the practice in 1996 and really enjoys the variety every day brings. Delivering babies (three times for some couples), surgery, infertility and office work with lots of continuity of care with many patients over the years. He is adept at the new methods of minimally invasive and office based surgeries now available. Dr. Julie Anderson has been practicing Optometry since 1988. After attending Oklahoma State University for undergraduate work, she earned her Doctor of Optometry from Northeastern State University College of Optometry in Tahlequah, Okla. After practicing in Oklahoma and North Carolina, she and her family have settled in the Kansas City area. He is a proud alum of Rockhurst High School and earned his bachelor's degree at the University of Missouri - Kansas City. Dr. Weixeldorfer graduated from the Nova Southeastern College of Optometry in Ft. Lauderdale and completed his residency at the Kansas City Veterans Administration Hospital. He treats Low Vision patients and provides comprehensive eye care, including routine eye exams and contact lens fittings. He has been working with Discover Vision for over five years.
