Janklow’s death shortens session

By Capital Journal Staff and wire reports

After former Gov. Bill Jank-low died, what would normally be a 35-day legislative session was shortened by two days.

The former governor’s death, coming after a months-long fight with cancer sent a shock-wave through the Legislature. On Tuesday, Janklow lay in state in the Capitol Rotunda as hundreds of people locally and from across the state walked by the closed casket.

Many bowed their heads for a moment as they passed the cof-

fin in the Rotunda, just a just a few feet from the office Janklow occupied for 16 years.

A pianist played a variety of tunes, including the Beatles’ “Yesterday.”

On Tuesday, two state troopers and two South Dakota Na-tional Guard officers stood as honor guards near the coffin, draped with a U.S. flag. A red U.S. Marine Corps flag and a Chicago Bears banner hung from balconies overlooking the rotunda, signifying Janklow’s military service and his devotion to the football team.

Gov. says session looks to be more legislation-heavy

By Capital Journal Staff and wire reports

Gov. Dennis Daugaard, speak-ing a few days before the South Dakota Legislature was set to convene, said he expect the ses-sion to be more bill-heavy this year.

More than 100 bills had been filed on the Legislative Research Council website earlier this week.

Daugaard said since many legislators are on the second ses-sion after being elected in 2010,

they are more likely to introduce legislation now that they have their feet wet.

The governor is also proposing several bills and amendments of his own.

The Republican governor proposed bonuses for teachers jobs in math and as well as deal-ing with a shortage of doctors, engineers, welders and others.

Eliminating unnecessary bills, regulations and rules is also part of the governor’s plan.
