Dear Friends,

We are pleased to share with you the 2012 Annual Report for the Mahaska County YMCA highlighting our continued efforts to strengthen the programs and services we provide to our community. The Board of Directors and Staff spent the last year planning for the future of the YMCA resulting in a completed Strategic Plan and Mission & Cost Analysis report, the restructuring of membership and program pricing and the beginning of the restructuring process for child care fees.

We focused on solidifying existing collaborative relationships as well as developing new relationships with other local organizations to more effectively meet community needs. The Oskaloosa Preschool Partnership continues to grow and thrive and we feel blessed to be a part of this exciting program with Head Start, Kid’s Corner Child Care, Oskaloosa Community School District and Sonshine Preschool. Our focus on youth development is making a difference for our children now and in future generations.

The Y is pleased to have been involved in the creation and leadership of the Mahaska Wellness Coalition as well. The partnerships and new programs created by this coalition will positively impact the health of our community for many years. Our community is stronger and healthier because of the impact we make on individual lives.

Sincerely,

Dawn Collins Tory SchrockExecutive Director Board President 2012

Why Give? With a mission to put Christian principles into practice through programs that build a healthy spirit, mind and body for all, our impact is felt when an individual makes a healthy choice, when a mentor inspires a child and when a community comes together for the common good

This mission requires financial support. Because the Y is a private, non-profit organization, donations of every size are critical to its operating budget and its future.

NuRTuRING THe pOTeNTIAL Of eVeRy CHILd ANd TeeNWe believe all children have potential and should have the opportunity to discover who they are, express themselves, and be nurtured in all their possibility.

We provide programs in child care; swim, sports, and play; and camp that create safe, authentic, and positive relationships with well-trained and caring role models and that teach life skills and values.

The Mahaska County YMCA has a strong collaborative relationship with the Oskaloosa Community School District. The Oskaloosa Elementary School leads the four-year-old preschool partnership with the Y, Head Start, Kid’s Corner and Sonshine Preschool. Last summer, we participated in intensive collaborative planning focused on increasing services to preschoolers at the Webster Preschool building. This planning resulted in the YMCA moving our four-year-

old child care classroom to the Webster building. The classroom is now shared with Kid’s Corner and quality wrap-around child care is offered in the room to our preschool students as well as the students of our partners (Head Start and Oskaloosa Elementary School preschool and Transition Kindergarten students). In addition, all of our preschool teachers participate in collaborative professional development activities and share

resources. The school district provides breakfast, lunch and snacks for the partners.

Middle School Physical Education teachers bring the sixth grade class to the Y for a 12-week ‘gym and swim’ program ensuring youth are introduced to the value of aquatic exercise. The Y offers a quality after-school child care program at the Oskaloosa Elementary School. The Y uses Positive Intervention Behavior Supports (PBIS) to support consistency in student behavior expectations from school to after school.

The YMCA and Kid’s Corner Child Care conducted a Financial Feasibility Study for our planned Early Childhood Education Center with funding support from United Way of Mahaska County. This study enabled us to critically evaluate the funding necessary to build and operate a new center in our community. The building plans are completed and a fundraising plan is in development.

Meanwhile, the Y and Kid’s Corner planned a collaborative child care classroom at the Webster Preschool with the goal of decreasing transitions and bussing for children and increasing classroom instruction time.

The YMCA bus is critical to supporting our quality child care and summer camp programs and preschool classrooms. We are able to provide field trips and access to facilities throughout the community and the state. We bring preschool classes from Webster and our school-agers at the OES to the Y for swimming. Musco team members painted the YMCA bus this summer. Arnold Motor Supply, Brandon Bandstra, Musco Sign Shop, and Bill and Ray’s Auto donated time and equipment to the effort. United Way of Mahaska County provided grant funds to support the facelift as well.

We found that 71% of children participating in Summer Fun Club maintained or gained reading abilities, rather than experience the summer learning loss that so many youth experience nationally. According to one parent, “My daughter tested at a high fourth-grade level in reading at the end of last school year.

Her assessment at the beginning of this year was at almost sixth grade reading level.”

The Y continues to offer youth sport programs with a focus on character development as well as skill building. Programs offered

include basketball, indoor flag football and soccer, outdoor flag and tackle football, and volleyball. Partnering organizations that make these programs possible include Central College, Oskaloosa Football League, Mahaska County Recreation Foundation, and William Penn University. Our relationships with these organizations ensure youth are provided quality programs while college students are developing coaching and program management skills.

Swim lessons offer critical life-saving skills while children gain self-confidence and learn to enjoy physical activity. We experienced a 42% increase in the number of youth participating in swimming lessons this year.

The Oskaloosa Dolphins, your Y swim team, again had a record-breaking year with 75 team members. The Dolphins were coached by Janet Reese and Wade Bolibaugh with support from volunteer Mike Braman, a Cargill team member, and two William Penn University students.

The Mahaska County YMCA is committed to meeting the needs of all children in our care. Our Educare/Preschool programs are led by teachers with two and four year degrees. We are implementing Creative Curriculum in our classrooms. This allows our teachers to emphasize on making class/individual observations daily in order to plan activities that help move your child through a developmental continuum.

Our three and four year preschool programs follow standards set forth by the state of Iowa. These standards are nearly identical to those standards written by NAEYC (National Association for the Education of Young Children). Only the Mahaska County YMCA offers swimming and gymnastics lessons by certified instructors as part of your child’s curriculum.

IMpROVING THe NATION’s HeALTH ANd WeLL-beINGWe believe everyone has the desire to be well and well-being is best cultivated by providing supportive relationships and environments. We also believe all people should have the opportunity to be well in spirit, mind, and body. More than physical activity and healthy eating, YMCA healthy living encompasses a holistic approach to well-being that significantly enhances the lives of individuals, families and communities.

We provide a welcoming, safe and supportive environment for all ages to become healthier and stay well in spirit, mind, and body.

Through meaningful programs in health, wellness and fitness and sports and recreation, the Y shares resources, expertise and support for the nation’s health and well-being.

The Y worked with many local partners to develop the Mahaska Wellness Coalition after the release of the Governor’s Healthiest State Initiative. The coalition coordinated Start

Somewhere walks throughout the Mahaska community, applied to be a Blue ZonesTM Project Demonstration Site, and encouraged community participation in the Live Healthy Iowa 100-Day Wellness Challenge. We offered ‘Step Along With Us’ walks in the mall over the winter and Mahaska County Conservation, an active coalition member offered outdoor walks and canoe trips.

We believe that we have a duty to help when help is needed. We believe people can improve their own lives and the lives of others with support, resources and guidance. We believe we are part of a global community with global responsibilities. We believe that

people want to help.

We provide opportunities for people to volunteer, engage, advocate and donate. We provide a caring environment where people know they’re not alone. The Mahaska County YMCA provided membership and youth program scholarships to almost 275 youth, seniors, and families including 47 individuals with disabilities and 20

students enrolled in the OCSD Alternative High School program. Everyone is welcome at the Y regardless of ability to pay.

We benefited from the United Way Day of Caring wherein a Cargill team came to the Y and spent the day painting our facilities. We offer many opportunities for volunteerism including service on the Board of Directors, at special events, in youth programs, and various facility projects.

As the first employer for many community teenagers, the Y recognizes our responsibility to model values and skills necessary to be successful in the workforce.

The Y is a training site for the Iowa Works program for at-risk youth, Oskaloosa High School work-to-school transition program, Promise Jobs, and Experience Works. We provide training for custodial and maintenance, child care, food service, and administrative positions.
