Goodbye winter… Hello spring!

The birds are singing, the geese are honking as they fly overhead…spring is in the air and our parks are coming alive! Township staff and volunteers have been very busy gearing up for a new season. The wood duck boxes are clean, bluebird boxes installed, restrooms are open, and the athletic fields are prepped. We are ready to say goodbye to winter and hello to spring!

Why not renew yourself this spring by trying something new? We are happy to offer you many exciting opportunities for a healthier and happier life in our beautiful community.

• Enjoy our new fishing dock in Central Park’s Historical Village (poles and tackle provided!)• Check out our new restroom building at North Meridian Road Park (to be open early summer 2012)• Go for a family bike ride along the newest extension of the inter-urban pathway or any other trails through our parks• Challenge your skills on the new extension of the Eastgate Park Bicycle Pump Track• Make new friends by joining an adult kickball, softball, or volleyball team• Participate in a bird walk conducted by the Capital Area Audubon Society• Connect with nature at the Harris Nature Center when you visit or attend a program• Drop by the Meridian Senior Center for a card game, lecture, or an exercise program• Enjoy a slice of 19th century settler life while visiting Meridian’s Historical Village• Help restore our natural areas by participating in the annual garlic mustard pulls• Pick up locally grown fresh veggies and fruit at our popular Farmers’ Market• Have a picnic while watching your little ones participate in one of our many youth sports programs

Whatever it is that “spring” means for you, chances are you can find it in one of Meridian Township’s 28 parks and natural areas and 19 land preserves. Don’t hesitate to contact the Parks and Recreation Office or the Harris Nature Center if you need any ideas.

Get out there and help us welcome spring and summer back to Meridian Township. Enjoy!

Creating Community through People, Parks and Programs!

Youth Recreation Scholarship FundOver the last few years, we have experienced an increase in scholarship requests for youth recreation programs. To assist us with fulfilling the greatest number of requests, a Scholarship Fund has been established to help offset the cost for families who have a demonstrated need. Our goal is to make sure that every child has an opportunity to play in our programs.

We are looking for individuals and/or businesses who may be interested in contributing to the fund. Assistance is needed to keep our program prices as low as possible and be affordable for all persons.

Donations may be sent to: Meridian Township Parks and Recreation Department 2100 Gaylord Smith Court Haslett, MI 48840

Please contact LuAnn Maisner, Director of Parks and Recreation at 517-853-4604 or [email protected] if you have questions. Contributions to this fund will have a direct impact on the youth in our community. Please consider making a gift. A new application form is available on-line for persons requesting scholarship assistance. Visit www.meridian.mi.us/parksandrecreation to download a form today.

Donations Accepted for Summer Playground ProgramPlayground programs have been a summer-time staple of local parks for decades. These drop-in programs offer opportunities

Scent Detector GamesGive your Dog a “nose job” that’s fun and exercising!Hector Hernandez, who has been training police dog teams how to detect drugs for over 20 years, will train your dog to search and locate a signature scent of your choosing in four days. This is similar to police officers training their dogs to find drugs or bombs, but you will be training your dog to find something you can have fun with. This training uses the dog’s ability to retrieve or hunt for fun and is an excellent way to bond with, mentally challenge, and exercise your dog. What a way to show your friends and family what your dog can do! Any dog of any breed is capable of learning this fun game. Maximum of 6 students.

Support Your Michigan State Parks When You Renew Your

Michigan License Plates

When you renew your Michigan License Plate at the Secretary of State’s office, you will be asked to support your Michigan State Parks by purchasing a $10.00 “Recreation Passport”. The Recreation Passport is Michigan’s solution for providing a stable funding source for Michigan’s 98 state parks and recreation areas and it creates a new funding source for Lansing’s community parks. The $10.00 Recreation Passport allows you entry into Michigan’s state parks or boating access sites at a greatly reduced price, from $24 to $10 annually.

When you check yes, your $10 will do so much more than get you into the state parks:

• 80% will be used to rebuild and maintain your state parks and recreation areas.

• 10% will be directed to local parks through grant funding.

• 7% will go toward your state forest campgrounds, pathways and non-motorized trails.

• 2.75% will support your state park cultural and historic resources.

• 0.25% will be used to educate and update you on the value of the Recreation Passport.

Check YES!Support Michigan’s State Parks and Lansing Parks

when you renew your license plates!

Deer-Resistant Gardening with Native Plants

Deer browsing is a problem for keeping a healthy, attractive garden and also for regeneration of native plants, which are essential for Michigan’s butterflies, bees, and wildlife. In this workshop, we will discuss landscaping strategies for discouraging deer from over-browsing your yard. Secondly, we’ll cover a number of attractive, native Michigan plants and other non-invasive species that tend to be avoided by deer, even in areas with heavy deer pressure. Workshop participants will be encouraged to share their own experience in deer-proofing their yards. Handouts, web sites, and book references on deer-resistant plants and planting strategies, plus sources of native plants, will also be provided. Finally, participants will have an opportunity to plant some deer-resistant native species on site! Questions? Contact Leslie Kuhn at [email protected]

Date: Saturday, June 2, 10 - 11:30amFee: $10 members /$15 non-membersLocation: Mid-Michigan Stewardship, 6162 Oakpark Trail, Haslett, MI Leaders: Leslie Kuhn and Jim HewittMinimum number of participants: 3; Maximum: 12

Shoreline Landscaping IdeasAre you interested in controlling erosion, improving water quality, and beautifying your shoreline views? W ould you like to provide a natural habitat that attracts songbirds and butterflies while deterring geese? This workshop will guide you through the process of planning a lakeside garden that can do all of these things. Advanced Master Gardener Laurie Kaufman will help you plan your lakeside paradise by selecting beautiful low-maintenance eco-friendly plants. We will start the workshop at the Lake Lansing Park South Lakeview Shelter, and if weather permits, we will travel to a nearby home for a guided tour of a mature lakeside landscape that’s sure to spark your imagination. Later in the summer, when water levels drop, you will have the opportunity to participate in planting a demonstration shoreline garden in Lake Lansing Park South.

Date: Wednesday, July 25, 5pm – 7 pmFee: $10 members / $15 nonmembersLocation: Lake Lansing Park South, Lakeview ShelterLeader: Laurie Kaufman, Mid-Michigan StewardshipMinimum number of participants: 3; Maximum: 20

Mid-Michigan Garlic Mustard Challenge May 2012

Join us for a number of free, community-oriented gatherings at sites in Ingham, Clinton and Eaton Counties to pull invasive garlic mustard from our natural areas and parks. Learn more about nature while protecting it! See our website (www.stewardshipnetwork.org/midmich) in spring 2012 for details or contact Leslie at [email protected] or by calling 734-996-3190.

Participate in Natural Area Restoration Outings! Are you interested in getting your family outdoors and back to nature, while having a positive impact on your community and the environment? You may have heard that the spread of invasive species is taking heavy toll on our natural areas and wildlife. Ingham County Parks and the Mid-Michigan Stewardship Initiative invite you to join us for restoration outings in Lake Lansing Park North. This park has over 500 acres of woods and wetlands, with a great trail system and many opportunities for learning about native wildlife and plants.

What’s involved? We provide knowledgeable leaders and equipment (gloves and pruning tools for removing invasive shrubs, or bags for collecting garlic mustard and other weed species) as well as bottled water and a snack. Over the period of 2 hours, we walk to the site, have a nature learning session and remove invasive species. Long-sleeved shirts, pants and boots or footwear that stay dry in damp/muddy areas are recommended and no experience is necessary.

We are open to arranging outings that meet the needs of your group as well as welcoming you on our scheduled outings. See “Workdays” by scrolling down the web page at www.stewardshipnetwork.org/midmich, or call Leslie Kuhn (517-339-3854; evenings and weekends) for more information on upcoming outings. We hope you’ll join us and become part of the community caring for our natural areas, for the benefit of wildlife and generations to come!

The Harris Nature Center is your Nature Connection in Meridian Township! Walk yourwaytofitnessononeofthemanyguidedwalks, learnmoreaboutplants, animalsandnature, enjoyacampfire, provideyourchildrenwithanopportunitytoexplorenaturewithatrained guide, practice environmental stewardship and much more this year!

1. Eagle Scout Matt Siegerlind from BSA Troop 2 built two large bookcases for the HNC library and a storage unit to hold educational posters

2. HNC received a grant from the National Association for Interpretation to aid in the construction of a new Habitat Exhibit which will be built in the classroom during spring/summer. The exhibit will feature live plants and animals, and demonstrate the interaction of three habitat types.

3. New insulating blinds have been installed on the large classroom windows, in part through Meridian Township’s Energy Efficiency Community Block Grant received from the US Dept of Energy in 2010.

29

4. New in the exhibit area is a Black Rat Snake. These snakes are native to Michigan, although their range is mostly to the south. As a tree-climber, this snake spends a lot of time basking toward the top of the cage where she’s easy to see!

5. The HNC Foundation will be building an educational viewing area behind the nature building this spring. This deck will include benches and offer a wonderful view of the river.

6. The HNC Foundation has awarded six (6) School Bus Scholarships to area classes to help them attend HNC educational programs. There are still a few left, so tell your child’s teacher!

7. Volunteers have just about finished building a hawk mew (cage) on the west side of the nature building. HNC has applied for a permit to house two permanently injured Red-tail Hawks at the nature center as an educational exhibit. Materials for the enclosure were donated by Phil Hoholik.

New Fishing Dock in Historical Village

Thanks to a grant from the Michigan Natural Resources Trust Fund and the Meridian Township Park Millage, a new fishing dock was recently constructed in Central Park. The dock is the newest addition to the Meridian Historical Village and will serve the community with fishing opportunities as well as a great place to gather on warm summer evenings.

Eagle Scout Ted Wilson constructed a fishing pole storage unit near the dock that contains poles and tackle boxes donated by Park Commissioner Mark Stephens, Director of Project Fish.

Contributions were also received from the Okemos Kiwanis Club to fund a bench, trash receptacle, and interpretive sign; and Liaison for Intergovernmental and Neighborhood Cooperation (LINC) contributed $5,500 toward construction. The poles and tackle are available for community use for free. Persons ages 17 and older may purchase a fishing license locally at Dick’s Sporting Goods, WalMart, and Meijer, as well as live bait.

Adopt a Park, Trail or Garden They Need Your TLC

The Township parks and gardens in Nancy Moore Park, Central Park, Orlando Park and other areas would benefit from loving care and attention only a volunteer can give. Volunteering once every 2-3 weeks (or as your schedule permits) to help remove unwanted plants, trimming, transplanting, picking up trash, calling to let us know what needs to be fixed, etc. would be a wondrous gift to your Township neighbors, friends, visitors and the parks themselves. Call Kit or Kati at 349-3866 for additional information. Thank you!

Community Services Millage Renewal/Increase on August Ballot

In November 2002, voters approved a Millage to fund existing senior citizen, human services and recreation activities which enhanced community life consisting of one-tenth mill in property tax per year for 10 years. In 2011, the Millage generated $158,016. The owner of a home with a taxable value of $100,000 paid $10/year to support these worthwhile services.

Recreation: The Recreation Division of the Parks and Recreation Department consists of two full-time staff who engage the community in physical and social activities while encouraging use of our 910-acre park system and Snell-Towar Recreation Center. Approximately 40,000 people were served by organized activities and special events in 2011. The Recreation Division is funded through fees and charges, Community Services Millage and the General Fund.

Human Services: The Human Services program works in conjunction with many organizations to coordinate emergency assistance for such things as shelter, furniture, food, utilities, transportation and medical services to low income families on our community. The Millage is utilized to fund the staff person. All direct assistance to residents is funded totally through donations. The Human Services Department is funded by the Community Services Millage and donations.

Meridian Senior Center: The Meridian Senior Center provides for the educational, enrichment and social needs of adults ages 55 and over. The Center has over 600 members who take part in computer, exercise, driving safety and classes that promote health and wellness. Also, over 150 seniors participate in the Tri-County Office on Aging Meals Program each week. The Center is staffed by one part-time coordinator and an 8/hr per week secretary. Staffing is funded totally through the Community Services Millage. The facility is provided by Okemos Public Schools and activities and operating expenses are funded through class fees, membership dues and donations. Beginning in July 2011, the Meridian Senior Center came under the direction of the Meridian Township Parks and Recreation Department.

Increase for Seniors: As the senior population increases in our community, the need for programs and services to address this growing demographic presents a serious challenge with current staffing levels and limited hours of operation. The Meridian Senior Center Advisory Board voted unanimously to request additional millage funds to support operations.

August Primary Ballot Question: The Township Board unanimously approved a ballot proposal to continue funding of current activities to enhance community life by renewing a one-tenth mill in property tax. They also supported an increase of .05 mills earmarked for Senior Citizen programming. The proposal of .15 mills will appear on the August 7, 2012 general election ballot would raise approximately $237,000 for existing senior citizen, human services and recreation programs. The proposed increase of .05 mills will generate approximately 79,000 and will be dedicated to support Meridian Senior Center operations by providing additional staff, longer hours of operation and additional programming. The proposed .15 mill levy will cost the owner of a home with a taxable value of $100,000, $15 per year for ten years.

Accessible OpportunitiesMeridian Township Parks and Recreation accepts registrations from all people regardless of skills or abilities. Those individuals who may require accommodation or assistance are encouraged to call the program site two weeks before the start of the program. Staff will make arrangements for reasonable accommodations. Meridian Township encourages citizens, including those with disabilities, to participate in recreation programming. Questions may be directed to the department at 517-853-4600.

Meridian Township’s Parks & Recreation Department is excited to announce the bicycle pump track has been renovated.

A bicycle pump track is a continuous loop that you can ride by “pumping” over rollers and berms. With recent additions the pump track has been transformed into more of a bike park, allowing riders to choose from multiple continuous loops. An additional loop has been added to the existing track including rollers, jumps, additional berms and a skills trail where riders can develop various bike handling skills.

For more info: 517-853-4600 www.meridian.mi.us

The skills trail includes skinny’s (balance beams), rock ledges and log piles. All of these features have a bypass option for beginners, so riders can work up to it.

The bike park is for riders of all skill levels, offering an opportunity for beginners and a challenge for experts. The track and renovations were funded and constructed by volunteers from the Michigan Mountain Biking Association (MMBA) who live in our community and Brian Van Order, owner of Michigan Demolition and Excavation Company.

Location: Eastgate Park 4023 S. Meridian Road, Okemos Open Hours: Dusk to dusk
