Investments in Our Future

Nearly 900 Tocqueville Society members giving $11.8 million annually are working to advance the common good in our region.

Strategic Investments | Powerful CollaborationsUnited Way’s investment strategies have evolved over many decades of service in the community. Today, we build relationships, develop partnerships and help focus energies around kindergarten readiness, high school graduation and financial stability.

There are hundreds of examples of the impact United Way’s investments have on our community every day. Below are results from two collaborations making a positive difference in our region.

Partners for a Competitive Workforce

The nation’s headlines are filled with statements about employers who can’t find workers with the right skills. United Way is doing our part; through Partners for a Competitive Workforce, we’re bringing together employers, chambers of commerce, workforce boards, educational institutions and community organizations across our tri-state region to focus our efforts on closing the skills gap and connecting employers to qualified workers.

The main objectives are to connect businesses with qualified workers, align education with employer needs and improve work readiness.

Since 2008, more than 4,800 individuals have been served across three career pathway partnerships. Of that total, we served nearly 4,000 jobseekers with 80%+ completing training and earning over 3,000 credentials and an estimated 60-65% job placement rate.

Financial Opportunity Centers

Low- and moderate-income families have been among the hardest hit in the economic downturn. Financial Opportunity Centers were launched in 2011 to address the needs of individuals struggling to meet the financial bottom line for themselves and their families. The Centers help individuals make appropriate financial decisions, boost earnings and reduce expenses.

Financial Opportunity Centers are one-stop, neighborhood-based centers that provide families and individuals with a full range of services and support, such as financial coaching and education, job training, housing assistance, and other supports, which help them become financially stable.

Individuals in crisis are empowered by learning how to best manage their spending, saving and investing. Financial education helps people learn to use credit wisely, to manage their money with confidence, and, most importantly, understand the benefits of saving.

Tocqueville Advisory CouncilThe Tocqueville Advisory Council develops and oversees thestrategic direction of the Society. Through a variety ofopportunities, the Council assists United Way in understanding and responding to Society member needs while providing feedback and perspective on important community topics. To engage new and returning members, the Council developed Beyond the Check, a series designed to educate and involve members in United Way’s work. Connect with the SocietyTocqueville on the Road | A quarterly series of special evening gatherings held at a variety of distinct venues throughout the region. The programs vary from extended networking to rich discussions of issues facing our community. These issues challenge us to develop a deeper understanding of United Way’s work and lend our voice to the conversation.

Past events have been held at The Green Diamond, Xavier University, Mercy HealthPlex and Peterloon.

These events are sponsored by an anonymous donor.

Impact Spotlight Series | These sessions are a forum for leadership donors to explore and discuss community-wide challenges and opportunities along with United Way’s future direction. Sessions are held during lunchtime or after work.

Past topics have included ‘Bold Goals for the Decade,’ ‘Closing the Skills Gap: Partners for a Competitive Workforce’ and ’Poverty in Our Community – And United Way’s Response.’

These sessions are sponsored by United Way board chair Valarie L. Sheppard and The Procter & Gamble Company.

LinkedIn | The Tocqueville Society LinkedIn Group is a platform for members to discuss the most pressing issues facing our region in the areas of education, income and health. Society members are finding this online conversation a good way to continue discussions about important regional news and Tocqueville on the Road sessions.

Tocqueville Riders | Tocqueville Riders was launched in 2011 as an unique networking opportunity for members who enjoy cycling. Rides are scheduled throughout the year and range from 25 to 50 miles in length.

Past hosts have included Bill Butler, Kay Geiger, David Joyce, John Pepper, The Portman Family and John Tew.

Beyond the Check | Sessions are held to acquaint Tocqueville members with United Way’s Agenda for Community Impact and the Bold Goals for our Region. Attendees are invited to engage in United Way committees, agency boards and other special volunteer opportunities based on their interests.
