Hymn: TiS 207
1. Jesus shall reign where’er the sun
does its successive journeys run;
his kingdom stretch from shore to
shore,
till moons shall wax and wane no
more.
2. For him shall endless prayer be
made,
and praises throng to crown his head;
his name like sweet perfume shall rise
with every morning sacrifice;
3. people and realms of every tongue
dwell on his love with sweetest song;
and infant voices shall proclaim
their early blessings on his name.
4. Blessings abound where’er he
reigns:
the prisoner leaps to lose his chains;
the weary find eternal rest;
and all who suffer want are blessed.
5. Where he displays his healing
power
death and the curse are known no
more;
in him the tribes of Adam boast
more blessings than their father lost.
6. Let every creature rise and bring
the highest honours to our King,
angels descend with songs again,
and earth repeat the long amen.
Harmony from the Revised Church Hymnary 1927
by permission Oxford University Press
Isaac Watts
1674–1748 alt.
Greeting: The Lord be with you.
AND ALSO WITH YOU. (see Ruth 2:4)
Sentence: Strengthen the weak hands, and make firm the feeble knees.
Say to those who are of a fearful heart, ‘Be strong, do not fear! Here is
your God.’ Isaiah 35.3–4
4
Prayer of Preparation:
As we gather as God's people let us pray together:
Almighty God, to whom all hearts are open,
all desires known, and from whom no secrets are hidden:
cleanse the thoughts of our hearts
by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit,
that we may perfectly love you,
and worthily magnify your holy name,
through Christ our Lord. Amen.
The Summary of the Commandments:
‘Hear, O Israel, the Lord our God, the Lord is one; you shall love the Lord
your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind,
and with all your strength.’ Jesus said: ‘This is the great and first
commandment. And a second is like it: you shall love your neighbour as
yourself.’
Kyrie eleison (Dudman Setting)
5
The Confession
Let us confess our sins in penitence and faith, confident in God's
forgiveness.
Merciful God, our maker and our judge,
we have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed,
and in what we have failed to do:
we have not loved you with our whole heart;
we have not loved our neighbours as ourselves;
we repent, and are sorry for all our sins.
Father, forgive us. Strengthen us to love and obey you
in newness of life; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
The Absolution (Celebrant)
Almighty God, who has promised forgiveness to all who turn to
him in faith: pardon you and set you free from all your sins,
strengthen you in all goodness and keep you in eternal life,
through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
Prayer of the Day
Sustain us, O God, with the power of your love
on our journey to meet the One who is coming:
strengthen our weak hands,
make firm our feeble knees,
and open blind eyes to the dawning of your kingdom,
so that our hearts may rejoice
as we behold the majesty of our God.
We ask this through your Son, our Lord Jesus Christ,
who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit,
one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

THE MINISTRY OF THE WORD
Readings from 'New Revised Standard Version' (NRSV)
First Reading: Isaiah 35.1-10
1 The wilderness and the dry land shall be glad, the desert shall rejoice and
blossom; like the crocus 2 it shall blossom abundantly, and rejoice with joy and
singing. The glory of Lebanon shall be given to it, the majesty of Carmel and
Sharon. They shall see the glory of the Lord, the majesty of our God. 3 Strengthen the weak hands, and make firm the feeble knees.
4 Say to those who are of a fearful heart, ‘Be strong, do not fear! Here is your
God. He will come with vengeance, with terrible recompense. He will come and
save you.’ 5 Then the eyes of the blind shall be opened, and the ears of the deaf
unstopped; 6 then the lame shall leap like a deer, and the tongue of the
speechless sing for joy. For waters shall break forth in the wilderness, and
streams in the desert; 7 the burning sand shall become a pool, and the thirsty
ground springs of water; the haunt of jackals shall become a swamp, the grass
shall become reeds and rushes. 8 A highway shall be there, and it shall be called
the Holy Way; the unclean shall not travel on it, but it shall be for God’s people;
no traveller, not even fools, shall go astray. 9 No lion shall be there, nor shall any ravenous beast come up on it; they shall
not be found there, but the redeemed shall walk there. 10
And the ransomed of the Lord shall return, and come to Zion with singing;
everlasting joy shall be upon their heads; they shall obtain joy and gladness,
and sorrow and sighing shall flee away.
Response: Hear the word of the Lord,
THANKS BE TO GOD
7
Psalm: Song of Mary
My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord:
my spirit rejoices in God my Saviour,
Who has looked with favour on his lowly servant:
from this day all generations will call me blessed.
The Almighty has done great things for me:
and holy is his name.
God has mercy on those who fear him:
from generation to generation.
The Lord has shown strength with his arm:
and scattered the proud in their conceit,
Casting down the mighty from their thrones:
and lifting up the lowly.
God has filled the hungry with good things:
and sent the rich away empty.
He has come to the aid of his servant Israel:
to remember the promise of mercy,
The promise made to our forebears:
to Abraham and his children for ever.
Second Reading: James 5.7-10
7 Be patient, therefore, beloved, until the coming of the Lord. The farmer waits
for the precious crop from the earth, being patient with it until it receives the
early and the late rains. 8 You also must be patient. Strengthen your hearts, for
the coming of the Lord is near. 9 Beloved, do not grumble against one another,
so that you may not be judged. See, the Judge is standing at the doors! 10
As an
example of suffering and patience, beloved, take the prophets who spoke in
the name of the Lord.
Response: Hear the word of the Lord,
THANKS BE TO GOD

Gradual Hymn: TiS 247
1. Let all be one in mind and heart
with Jesus Christ, our Lord,
who, though he was by nature God,
God’s glory laid aside.
2. He laid his heavenly glory down;
God’s servant he became;
obediently he lived, to die
in shame upon the cross.
3. Now God has raised him up, to bear
the name above all names;
at Jesus’ name all knees shall bow,
all tongues proclaim him Lord.
4. All glory now the Father shares
with his exalted Son,
whom God the Holy Spirit raised
from death to heaven’s throne.

We stand for the reading of the Holy Gospel as a sign of respect as we greet our
Lord who is present in His Holy Word.
The Lord be with you
AND ALSO WITH YOU
The gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ, according to Saint Matthew chapter 11
beginning at the 2nd
verse.
GLORY TO YOU, LORD JESUS CHRIST.
2 When John heard in prison what the Messiah was doing, he sent word by his
disciples 3 and said to him, ‘Are you the one who is to come, or are we to wait
for another?’ 4 Jesus answered them, ‘Go and tell John what you hear and see:
5 the blind
receive their sight, the lame walk, the lepers are cleansed, the deaf hear, the
dead are raised, and the poor have good news brought to them. 6 And blessed is anyone who takes no offence at me.’
7 As they went away, Jesus began to speak to the crowds about John: ‘What did
you go out into the wilderness to look at? A reed shaken by the wind? 8 What then did you go out to see? Someone dressed in soft robes? Look, those
who wear soft robes are in royal palaces. 9 What then did you go out to see? A prophet? Yes, I tell you, and more than a
prophet. 10
This is the one about whom it is written, “See, I am sending my messenger
ahead of you, who will prepare your way before you.” 11
Truly I tell you, among those born of women no one has arisen greater than
John the Baptist; yet the least in the kingdom of heaven is greater than he.
Gospel Response: This is the gospel of the Lord,
PRAISE TO YOU, LORD JESUS CHRIST.

The Nicene Creed
Let us together affirm the faith of the Church.
We believe in one God,
the Father, the almighty,
maker of heaven and earth,
of all that is, seen and unseen.
We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ,
the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father,
God from God, Light from Light,
true God from true God, begotten, not made,
of one Being with the Father;
through him all things were made.
For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven,
was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the virgin Mary
and became truly human.
For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate;
he suffered death and was buried.
On the third day he rose again
in accordance with the Scriptures;
he ascended into heaven
and is seated at the right hand of the Father.
He will come again in glory to judge
the living and the dead,
and his kingdom will have no end.
We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life,
who proceeds from the Father and the Son,
who with the Father and the Son
is worshipped and glorified,
who has spoken through the prophets.
We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church.
We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins.
We look for the resurrection of the dead,
and the life of the world to come. Amen.
11

12
THE GREETING OF PEACE (all stand)
{Celebrant} We are the body of Christ. His Spirit is with us.
The peace of the Lord be always with you. And also with you.
Offertory Hymn: TiS 266
1. ‘Wake, awake, for night is flying,’
the watchmen on the heights are
crying,
‘Awake, Jerusalem, arise!’
Midnight hears the welcome voices,
and at the rousing cry rejoices:
‘Where are you, all you virgins wise?
The bridegroom comes, awake!
Your lighted lamps then take.
Hallelujah!
With joy prepare
to meet him there;
the royal wedding feast is near.’
2. Zion hears the watchmen singing,
and in her heart new joy is springing;
she wakes, she rises from her gloom.
For her Lord now comes all-glorious,
and strong in grace, in truth
victorious;
her star has risen, her light has come.
Now come, O precious crown,
Lord Jesus, God’s own Son.
Hail, hosanna!
O lead us all
into the hall
where you provide your joyful meal.
3. Now let all the heavens adore you,
and saints and angels sing before you
with harp and cymbal’s joyful tone.
Gates of pearl in heaven are shining;
there, with the angel-choir
combining,
we gather round your radiant throne.
No eye has seen that sight,
no ear heard such delight.
What rejoicing!
Yet there will we
eternally
with songs acclaim your majesty.
Philipp Nicolai 1556–1608
tr. Catherine Winkworth 1827–78 alt.
The earlier version of this chorale may be found
in The Lutheran Hymnal, 1973, at 487.
13
Offertory Prayer: Blessed are you, Lord, God of all creation. Through
your goodness we have these gifts to share. Accept and use our offerings
for your glory and for the service of your kingdom.
BLESSED BE GOD FOR EVER.
THE PRAYER OF THANKSGIVING
Priest: The Lord be with you.
People: And also with you.
Priest: Lift up your hearts:
People: We lift them to the Lord.
Priest: Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.
People: It is right to give him thanks and praise...
Priest: ... Forever praising you and singing:
14
Priest: …. do this as often as you drink it in remembrance of me
Priest: in songs of never ending praise:
Our Father in heaven,
hallowed be your name,
your kingdom come,
your will be done,
on earth as in heaven.
Give us today our daily bread.
Forgive us our sins
as we forgive those who sin against us.
Save us from the time of trial
and deliver us from evil.
For the kingdom, the power,
and the glory are yours
now and for ever. Amen.
15
THE BREAKING OF THE BREAD AND THE COMMUNION
{Celebrant} We break this bread to share in the body of Christ.
We who are many are one body,
For we all share in the one bread.
The Choir sings the Agnus Dei
Come let us take this holy sacrament of the body and blood of Christ in
remembrance that he died for us, and feed on him in our hearts by faith
with thanksgiving.
Baptised Christians who receive communion in their own church
are invited to share communion with us.
Communion wine may be received:
(a) from the common cup from (drink or intinction)
(b) from an individual glass on request from the first Eucharistic Assistant.
Or you may choose to receive the wafer only (Communion in one kind).
The Choir Sings: “Jesus Christ the Apple Tree”, arr. Bullard
THE SENDING OUT OF GOD'S PEOPLE
Post-Communion Prayer
Prayer of self-offering
Father, we offer ourselves to you
as a living sacrifice
through Jesus Christ our Lord.
Send us out in the power of your Spirit
to live and work to your praise and glory. AMEN
16
Final Hymn: TiS 276
1. There’s a light upon the mountains, and the day is at the spring
when our eyes shall see the beauty and the glory of the King;
weary was our heart with waiting, and the night-watch seemed so long,
but his triumph day is breaking, and we hail it with a song.
2. There’s a hush of expectation, and a quiet in the air,
and the breath of God is moving in the fervent breath of prayer:
for the suffering, dying Jesus is the Christ upon the throne,
and the travail of our spirit is the travail of his own.
3. He is breaking down the barriers, he is casting up the way,
he is calling for his angels to build up the gates of day:
but his angels here are human, not the shining hosts above;
for the drum-beats of his army are the heart-beats of our love.
4. Hark, we hear a distant music, and it comes with fuller swell —
the great triumph song of Jesus, of our King, Immanuel:
Zion, go you forth to meet him; and, my soul, be swift to bring
all your finest and your dearest for the triumph of our King!
Henry Burton 1840–1930 alt.
